Tesla CEO Elon Musk looks poised to transform the company’s electric powered automobiles into driverless vehicles in a risky bid to know a bold vision that he has been floating for years.
The technology required to make that quantum soar is scheduled to be proven off to Tesla traders Monday at the enterprise’s Palo Alto, California, headquarters.
Musk, generic for his swagger in addition to his smarts, is so certain that Tesla will win the race towards full autonomy that he indicated in an interview past this month that his enterprise’s cars should still be capable of navigate congested highways and city streets with out a human at the back of the wheel via no later than subsequent yr.
“I could be wrong, but it surely looks to be the case that Tesla is vastly ahead of all and sundry,” Musk told Lex Fridman, a Massachusetts Institute of expertise analysis scientist specializing in self reliant cars.
however specialists say they’re skeptical no matter if Tesla’s technology has superior anywhere near the element the place its cars might be able to being driven fully with the aid of a robot, with out a human in position to take handle if whatever goes awry.
“It’s all hype,” mentioned Steven E. Shladover, a retired analysis engineer at the university of California, Berkeley who has been involved in efforts to create self reliant using for 45 years. “The know-how does not exist to do what he is claiming. He doesn’t have it and neither does anybody else.”
more than 60 businesses within the U.S. alone are setting up self sustaining cars. Some are aiming to have their totally self sufficient vehicles start carrying passengers in small geographic areas as early as this 12 months. Many consultants don’t accept as true with they’ll be in common use for a decade or greater.
Musk’s description of Tesla’s controls as “Full Self-riding” has alarmed some observers who consider it is going to supply owners a false feel of safety and create probably deadly situations in circumstances that the autonomous vehicles can’t handle. They additionally say they’re looking forward to Musk to outline self-riding and display just below what situations and places the vehicles can trip devoid of human intervention, together with selected records displaying that they'd be safer than human drivers and even if the system’s security has been reviewed with the aid of outside corporations or executive organizations.
in the meantime, Musk continues to use both his Twitter account and Tesla’s website to pump up a new desktop now in construction for full self-riding automobiles. once the self-riding utility is able, those with new computer systems will get an update by the use of the web, Musk has noted. at present the self-using computer charges US$5,000, however the price rises to US$7,000 if it’s put in after beginning.
Tesla cars equipped for full autonomy will depend on eight cameras that cover 360 levels, entrance-facing radar and brief-range ultrasonic sensors. It’s not familiar what number of could have the full self-driving technology. There are about 400,000 Teslas on the highway international. That’s different from the self-using programs being built with the aid of virtually every different company within the industry, together with Google spinoff Waymo, time-honored Motors’ Cruise Automation, and Ford-affiliated Argo AI. all of them use cameras and radar masking 360 degrees, and also have light beam sensors known as Lidar to the combine as a 3rd redundant sensor, in addition to exact three-d mapping.
“automobiles that don’t have Lidar, that don’t have advanced radar, that haven’t captured a 3D map are not self-using automobiles,” Ken Washington, Ford’s chief technical officer, observed all the way through a recent interview with Recode. “they are amazing customer motors with really first rate driver-assist know-how.”
Even Lidar doesn’t assure one hundred per cent security. Waymo closing 12 months backed off of a pledge to run a robotaxi carrier in Phoenix with out human backup drivers for defense causes. And an Uber self reliant test vehicle with Lidar in addition to a human backup driver ran down and killed a pedestrian ultimate 12 months in Tempe, Arizona, the primary ordinary death involving self-driving expertise.
Amnon Shashua, CEO of Israeli self sustaining car computing company Mobileye, says vehicles with 360-degree cameras and entrance facing radar might force autonomously, but they would not be as safe as human drivers. careful humans can pressure 10 million hours and not using a mistake leading to a deadly crash, however vehicles with out full redundant sensors can not, he observed.
Phil Koopman, a professor of electrical and desktop engineering at Carnegie Mellon college, spoke of Musk needs to show his automobiles can handle all situations if he wants to claim they could drive themselves. for example, he wonders if Tesla has a plan for a big truck splashing gallons of dirty water onto a vehicle in a snowfall, obstructing the cameras.
“The rabbit hole goes fairly deep if you need to make that [full self-driving] argument,” he said.
Tesla already has been providing a device referred to as “Autopilot” that can control vehicles on a limited groundwork with consistent monitoring via a human driver. On its website, it says the Autopilot device steers your car in its lane and hurries up and brakes automatically for different cars and pedestrians in its lane. however questions already have been raised about Autopilot’s reliability after its involvement in three deadly crashes.
in one, neither the motive force nor a Tesla model S operating on the company’s Autopilot driver-aid gadget spotted a tractor-trailer crossing in entrance of it on a Florida, toll road in 2016. The car drove below the trailer shearing off the roof and killing the motive force.
In a 2017 report , the national Transportation defense Board wrote that driver inattention and design limitations of Autopilot played important roles in the fatality, and it discovered that the model S cameras and radar weren’t capable of detecting a automobile turning into its course. fairly, the techniques are designed to realize automobiles they are following to keep away from rear-conclusion collisions.
The agency also is still investigating the two other deadly crashes, one last month in Delray beach, Florida, eerily corresponding to the 2016 Florida crash, and one more involving a Tesla SUV that became working on Autopilot when it hit a highway lane-dividing barrier in Silicon Valley. Tesla continues that its current programs are only for tips, and that drivers need to pay consideration and be able to intervene.
With “Full Self-driving ability,” Tesla touts that you just get automated using from the dual carriageway on ramp to the off ramp together with interchanges and altering lanes automatically to overhaul slower vehicles. Later this 12 months, the cars will be able to respect and reply to site visitors lights and forestall indications and drive instantly on city streets, the site says.
these feats are whatever thing that Tesla will probably ought to show to regulators in California — its biggest U.S. market up to now — before its totally independent vehicles are allowed on the roads there. however most different states don’t have the same necessities as California. And specialists say there’s no federal legislations requiring preapproval for totally independent riding, provided that a automobile meets federal security requisites, which Teslas do.
“unfortunately, it can be essential for several individuals to die before regulators step in,” Shladover mentioned.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tesla CEO Elon Musk expects to delivery converting the business’s electric powered cars into absolutely self-driving vehicles subsequent year as part of an audacious plan to create a network of robotic taxis to compete towards Uber and different experience-hailing services.
The vision sketched out Monday right through an adventure at Tesla's Silicon Valley headquarters requires a few leaps of religion — whatever thing that the zealous investors and buyers who view Musk as a technological genius regularly are willing to take.
however self-using vehicle experts concern Musk is shirking public protection so as to enhance Tesla's stock and sell greater of the company's electric powered cars. This amid lingering questions on whether the 15-12 months-historic automaker can always make cash.
"It seems like a pipe dream that he's promoting people," spoke of Raj Rajkumar, an electrical and laptop engineering professor at Carnegie Mellon college. "I consider it's actually overpromising, which is common of Elon Musk."
To show his skeptics wrong, Musk will have to persuade regulators that Tesla's know-how for reworking doubtlessly a whole lot of thousands of electric automobiles into self-riding automobiles will produce robots which are safer and more authentic than humans.
And to do that, Musk will have to be relevant in his bet that Tesla has come up with an improved means to produce self-driving vehicles than well-nigh each different of the more than 60 agencies within the U.S. working towards the same aim.
some of those agencies are aiming to have their totally self sufficient cars begin carrying passengers in small geographic areas as early as this 12 months, however many experts don't accept as true with they will be in common use for a decade or extra.
not like most of those different businesses, Tesla's automobiles won't include the light beam sensors referred to as Lidar that many trade consultants trust to be fundamental device for robotic vehicles to navigate the road.
Musk trashed Lidar as a "idiot's errand" and "frigging stupid" in a putdown of organizations akin to Google spin-off Waymo and frequent Motors' Cruise Automation that are together with the mild beam sensors in their techniques.
"they're going to dump Lidar," Musk guaranteed investors and analysts gathered at Tesla's Palo Alto, California, workplace for the 2 ½ hour presentation.
Musk, greatly prevalent for his swagger as a whole lot as his smarts, spent a whole lot of the time attempting to influence both the buyers and patrons that he had figured out an improved technique to train robots the way to drive.
"it's basically insane to buy anything else apart from a Tesla," Musk pointed out at one point, arguing that paying for a vehicle from some other automaker could be like getting a horse.
Musk's quasi-revenue pitch got here two days before Tesla is anticipated to record a disappointing efficiency for the first three months of the year. Analysts polled by using FactSet predict a $305.5 million first quarter net loss in keeping with disappointing vehicle income, a setback after Musk pledged heading into the second half of final 12 months that Tesla would be profitable from that element onward.
Tesla's stock sank by essentially 4 p.c to close Monday at $262.75.
From Musk's vantage aspect, Tesla has a huge skills over self sustaining automobile rivals because it gathers a massive amount of records in the precise world. This quarter, he observed Tesla may have 500,000 cars on the highway, each fitted with eight cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar gathering facts to assist construct the company's neural network, that will serve because the digital equal of the self-using automobiles' awareness.
The network allows vehicles to appreciate images, determine what objects are and determine the way to contend with them. To develop into totally self-driving, the automobiles also need a special computing device that fits at the back of the glove field and is powered through a distinct chip Musk boasted is stronger than another processor on the planet "by way of an enormous margin."
at present the self-driving computing device charges $5,000, but the expense rises to $7,000 if it's installed after beginning.
finally, Tesla will bring application updates to those computers to make it feasible for its electric vehicles to be pushed through a robotic, with no human in position to take over in case whatever goes awry. There can be a mild chance of some "fender benders," Musk acknowledged Monday, and indicated Tesla should be liable for accident brought about through a vehicle under the control of its robotic.
"people will die," Rajkumar envisioned. "i will be able to let you know that at the moment. as a result of within the actual world, crazy things turn up."
Musk anticipated that the expertise for fully self-driving Tesla will roll out at some element from April to June subsequent year. Then, Tesla will deserve to get regulatory acclaim for the utterly self sustaining vehicles to power on roads, something Musk anticipated would turn up in a couple of states by means of the end of next year. He did not selected where Tesla will try to gain approval first.
California, Tesla's largest U.S. market, requires proof that fully self reliant cars can force safely on public roads, but most other states aren't as stringent. And consultants say there is no federal legislation requiring preapproval for utterly independent riding, as long as a car meets federal protection requisites, which Teslas already do.
inside three years, Tesla could be manufacturing self-using vehicles that do not even have steerage wheels or brake pedals in them, Musk spoke of.
in the event that they're allowed on the roads, fully driverless automobiles would allow Musk to perform his plan to extend into the trip-hailing market with a fleet of sleek Teslas. owners of Teslas with the business's self-riding laptop could plug into an app-based mostly network to choose up fare-paying passengers once they failed to deserve to use their automobile.
Musk theorizes that a experience-hailing provider corresponding to Uber and Lyft will raise Tesla's income and make it easier for the business to sell its automobiles to buyers who might with no trouble reduce the charge of possession by using making funds on the aspect. Tesla would get 20% to 25% of each and every fare in the community.
Tesla also intends to transform all the electric vehicles under leasing contracts to be turned into robotaxis upon their return.
Uber and Lyft also accept as true with driverless automobiles to be one of the crucial keys to creating cash from their nonetheless unprofitable features, but have not set a particular timetable for reaching that breakthrough while they proceed to work on their personal self reliant know-how.
Waymo rolled out a journey-hailing service the usage of self-driving motors late closing year within the Phoenix enviornment, but it simplest available to a small pool of passengers who were previously enrolled in a verify application. And all the vehicles in Waymo's experience-hailing carrier nevertheless have a human at the back of the steering wheel ready to take handle.
The Waymo automobiles also have Lidar, whatever thing experts continue to be convinced need to be a part of any absolutely self-using automobile, despite Musk's colorful contentions otherwise.
“motors that don’t have Lidar, that don’t have advanced radar, that haven’t captured a 3-D map are not self-driving motors,” Ken Washington, Ford’s chief technical officer, mentioned all through a recent interview with Recode. “they're first-rate buyer vehicles with in fact respectable driver-support technology.”
How can virtual reality support to prepare troopers for battle? How do we offer protection to our airspace from malicious drones? What role can autonomous robots play in armed forces surveillance and hazard disposal activities?
These had been just a few of the subject matters coming out of this 12 months’s protection and Counter Terror Expo (SCTX 2019 – view a preview right here). along with the exhibitors, defence specialists from the world’s leading security enterprises engaged with the public on what they expect the way forward for defence technology will look like and the way we are able to increase security capabilities these days to prevent an entire new host of future threats, using the latest digital tools, corresponding to automation, AI and digital truth. What themes are shaping the future of defence know-how?Securing airspace from malicious UAV assaults
Unsurprisingly in all probability, the hot theme of this year’s SCTX 2019 became establishing an all-inclusive response to immobilising unmanned aerial cars (UAVs), such as the ones that brought about critical disruption at Gatwick and Heathrow airports within the UK around the flip of the 12 months.
a number of exhibitors and protection officers sought to address the complicated drone issue, with distinct organizations providing to deliver both difficult kill and soft kill countermeasures, including Fortem’s autonomous Drone Hunter UAV and Aaronia AG AARTOS all-in-one drone detection suite.
Andrew McQuillan, director of Crowded area Drones, stated: “The government has now given each airport a guarantee that they can get resources there within four hours to notice drones and cope with unlawful drones.”
“The govt has now given each airport a guarantee that they can get resources there inside four hours to notice drones.”
however, McQuillan noted that there are currently no items that can present an entire system that may detect and prevent malicious attacks from all class of UAVs.
“[There are] companies coming in with drone detection products which are claiming they can contend with, for example, the Heathrow and Gatwick incidents and additionally detect any category of drone coming in,” McQuillan delivered.
“The issue is that there isn’t in reality a solution accessible that may try this. the entire massive airports presently are looking at a mix of solutions and several types of expertise to comprehensively cover it. but nothing available as it stands nowadays can give you one hundred% assure it might be able to discover any class of drone coming into your airspace or over your experience.”
the uk Ministry of Defence has simply proposed a new competition for more suitable innovation in counter-UAV techniques. The way forward for small arms practicing with virtual fact
positioned in the center of the exhibition corridor, UK engineering firm Meggitt gave visitors the probability to seem interior and look at various the firearms practising equipment (fat) 180LE – a 180° immersive digital reality dice for small firearms practising.
inner the fats facility, three large borderless screens simulated a number of precise-life situations in high definition, giving warfighters the skill to heighten their reactions to threats and enhance taking pictures accuracy.
Meggitt international marketing director for practising techniques Michelle Henderson talked about: “The fat 180LE from Meggitt working towards programs represents the next technology in small-palms training for legislations enforcement and other security forces.
“The system offers one hundred eighty° excessive-definition projection on three without borders 150” X 84” screens.”
“The equipment offers a hundred and eighty° excessive-definition projection on three without borderlines 150” X 84” screens with a sixteen:9 factor ratio for an immersive adventure. A 5.1 encompass sound audio equipment with directional sound outcomes permits instructors to contain unsettling noise from any path to bring up situational awareness.”
The fat 180LE helps up to twenty different simulated weapons, including pistols, rifles, shotguns, as well as less-deadly weapons, such as pepper spray and the TASER weapon. troopers using the fats centre can also educate in comprehensive darkness the usage of weapon-mounted flashlights to mimic night situations.
at the show, Meggitt’s exhibitors confirmed the fat’s Marksmanship mode, which permits troopers to coach in 3D indoor and out of doors ranges to improve each close and long-range capturing, and enrich reactions in opposition t simulated enemies who could turn, pop-up and stream round.
at present, the fats facility is getting used to teach troopers within the US military, US Marine Corps and US Air drive, as neatly as the UK MOD, the Australian Defence drive, the Canadian militia and Air force, and the Singapore army.Introducing the self sustaining Drone Hunter
As up to now outlined, tackling threats from drones turned into one of the crucial key dialogue points at SCTX 2019. whereas many groups claimed to present drone detection and jamming utility, some of the key issues that Fortem CEO Timothy Bean noted became a way to stop a drone that can't be detected through RF sign, because it isn't complex to fly a UAV on waypoints the use of a pill and mapping utility.
To this conclusion, Fortem created the Drone Hunter. The Drone Hunter is a fully autonomous UAV that deploys itself as soon as a drone is detected with the aid of radar expertise, which incorporates hundreds of small radars that construct a digitised 3D map of a certain airspace, and shoots a net to seize the enemy drone. within the 3D airspace, radars create geo-fences that notify the operator when a drone flies out of its hall and into the restrained airspace.
“If some thing enters that geo-fence you have got a rules engine, that you can cue the police, you could send a text message to safety officers around your perimeter, that you could cue a camera, you could have a guy working out with his jamming gun, no longer constructive, however you might,” Bean observed.
“There’s a radar on the drone hunter on the way to lock onto that drone and dogfight it.”
“One issue which you can do is you cue a Drone Hunter this is in a hangar on accurate of a building and what it will do is it'll get the message autonomously inside half a second and it'll take off 30m/s – like a bullet – out of its hangar. it's going to go to where that drone is autonomously, no human flying it, there’s a radar on the drone hunter that allows you to lock onto that drone and dogfight it and it will shoot it down, on the circulate in the wind and tether it and toe it away.”
The Drone Hunter has the option to be semi-self reliant and may be recommended to launch, pursue, come home, or fire its net. however, in keeping with Bean, no human pilot may take out a drone if it breaks the geo-fence. Fortem proven this with consultants from the USA military and their listing of catching drones after 38 makes an attempt changed into zero.
Bean conceded that given that the Drone Hunter simplest has two photographs, it is extra of a challenge to contend with swarms of drones. youngsters, Fortem efficaciously accomplished a 4-on-four situation where the drones organized themselves autonomously, and a stadium or city can have dissimilar Drone Hunters on the capable in any given scenario.Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) robots
There become also a big range of EOD robots on reveal at SCTX 2019, including ICOR technology’s CALIBER range and NIC devices’ ZEUS latitude.
ICOR technology showcased EOD robots ranging from its 333kg Mk4 massive EOD robot that can carry as much as 200lbs and uses a 9ft vertical camera, six additional cameras, together with weapons and claw sensors to realize and dispose of threats safely.
"Mini-CALIBER SWAT robot is a 29kg moveable robot that may also be straight away deployed to function search responsibilities."
The smallest of the ICOR latitude – the Mini-CALIBER SWAT robotic is a 29kg transportable robotic that can also be quickly deployed to function search responsibilities in rooms, stairwells, in constrained spaces, and under/interior vehicles. now not simplest does it have fifty three” reach using its digital arm, however also has two-way audio for projects, such as crisis negotiation.
meanwhile, NIC contraptions verified its ZEUS top of the line Modular robot. The Zeus is an all-inclusive UGV used for a number of actions corresponding to surveillance, communication, attain and dexterity capabilities, as well as EOD with its barrelled disruptors.
some of the entertaining elements of ZEUS is its backblast cylinder that highlights the route of the discharged effluent from the rear of the disrupter, allowing operators to remember no matter if the discharge is a direct hazard to ZEUS or soldiers in the surrounding area.Demo Zone: robotic obstacle direction and explosive detection canines
as well as panel discussions and the newest technology on present, some exhibitors verified their products or functions at the Defence protection Demo Zone.
Highlights encompass a robot obstacle route performed by means of Nexter Robotics, which resources robots to the French militia and other armies for reconnaissance, anti-IED computerized conveying and soldier insurance policy. during the demo, Nexter’s NERVA LG UGV sped across the demo zone ground on each sand and pebbled terrain with out challenge and, after a three-2nd modification to include the tracks, become able to climb a group of steps made from crates.
Explosive detection canines from RFA security capabilities and VWK9 additionally confirmed how they handled a suspicious equipment with little provocation from the handler. VWK9 also explained the important thing difference between bomb dogs and people screening dogs, and company had a chance to satisfy the canine after the demonstration.

NASA and the SETI Institute are working on a drone that could explore, map and analyze caves under the Martian surface to find evidence of life on the planet.
The flying drone recently created a 3D map of a cave in Iceland using LIDAR technology. The cave, created by flowing lava, is similar to caves on the lunar and Martian surfaces. Developers believe the technology could realistically be adapted to explore those caves. The research was presented at the recent Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.
“Small free-flying spacecraft might be the ideal robotic platform for the exploration of lava tubes on Earth, the Moon, and Mars for the simple reason that they would not need to come in direct contact with any of the rough and potentially unstable surfaces found inside caves and lava tubes,” said Andrew Horchler, Director of Future Missions and Technology at Astrobotic, the robotics company that partnered with the SETI Institute for this project. “Nimble drones could enter, map, and exit caves quickly, returning from the darkness to send data back to Earth, return a sample to the surface, recharge, and refuel.”
However, the drone would need to be able to navigate on Mars’ thin atmosphere—and the moon’s complete lack of atmosphere—where a conventional quadrotor drone couldn’t function. Small thrusters may be the solution.
The Lofthellir Ice Cave mission tested the idea of using a LIDAR-equipped drone to safely navigate and accurately map rock and ice inside a dark lava tube without GPS or an existing map to guide it. Astrobotic has developed a custom navigation software called AstroNavto enable small crafts like drones to autonomously explore underground environments. It uses both stereo vision and LIDAR, meaning the LIDAR can be used to explore environments in complete darkness while the visual sensor can aid navigation in lighted areas. The drone can switch between these modes in mid-flight.
Drone maps lava tube in Iceland—and could someday map terrain on Mars.
“The Astrobotic drone and LIDAR performed exactly as we had hoped, and was able to help us map the Lofthellir Lava Tube in 3D within minutes,” said Pascal Lee, a scientist at SETI.
The successful Iceland test showcases the project’s potential for future exploration on other worlds, where drones could create 3D maps that would help mission planners prepare crewed missions to Mars. They could also search for signs of water.
“More development work will be needed to create a system that’s ready for the Moon or Mars, but the study of this icy lava tube is an important first step for us,” said Horchler.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tesla CEO Elon Musk expects to start converting the company’s electric cars into fully self-driving vehicles next year as part of an audacious plan to create a network of robotic taxis to compete against Uber and other ride-hailing services.
The vision sketched out Monday during an event at Tesla's Silicon Valley headquarters requires several leaps of faith — something that the zealous investors and consumers who view Musk as a technological genius often are willing to take.
But self-driving car experts fear Musk is shirking public safety in an effort to boost Tesla's stock and sell more of the company's electric cars. This amid lingering questions about whether the 15-year-old automaker can consistently make money.
"It sounds like a pipe dream that he's selling people," said Raj Rajkumar, an electrical and computer engineering professor at Carnegie Mellon University. "I think it's basically overpromising, which is typical of Elon Musk."
To prove his skeptics wrong, Musk will have to persuade regulators that Tesla's technology for transforming potentially hundreds of thousands of electric cars into self-driving vehicles will produce robots that are safer and more reliable than humans.
And to do that, Musk will have to be correct in his bet that Tesla has come up with a better way to produce self-driving cars than virtually every other of the more than 60 companies in the U.S. working toward the same goal.
Some of those companies are aiming to have their fully autonomous cars begin carrying passengers in small geographic areas as early as this year, but many experts don't believe they'll be in widespread use for a decade or more.
Unlike most of those other companies, Tesla's cars won't come with the light beam sensors called Lidar that many industry experts consider to be essential equipment for robotic vehicles to navigate the road.
Musk trashed Lidar as a "fool's errand" and "frigging stupid" in a putdown of companies such as Google spin-off Waymo and General Motors' Cruise Automation that are including the light beam sensors in their systems.
"They are going to dump Lidar," Musk assured investors and analysts gathered at Tesla's Palo Alto, California, office for the 2 ½ hour presentation.
Musk, widely known for his swagger as much as his smarts, spent much of the time trying to persuade both the investors and consumers that he had figured out a better way to teach robots how to drive.
"It is fundamentally insane to buy anything other than a Tesla," Musk said at one point, arguing that purchasing a vehicle from any other automaker would be like getting a horse.
Musk's quasi-sales pitch came two days before Tesla is expected to report a disappointing performance for the first three months of the year. Analysts polled by FactSet predict a $305.5 million first quarter net loss based on disappointing car sales, a setback after Musk pledged heading into the second half of last year that Tesla would be profitable from that point onward.
Tesla's stock sank by nearly 4 percent to close Monday at $262.75.
From Musk's vantage point, Tesla has a huge advantage over autonomous vehicle competitors because it gathers a massive amount of data in the real world. This quarter, he said Tesla will have 500,000 vehicles on the road, each equipped with eight cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar gathering data to help build the company's neural network, which will serve as the digital equivalent of the self-driving cars' consciousness.
The network allows vehicles to recognize images, determine what objects are and figure out how to deal with them. To become fully self-driving, the cars also need a special computer that fits behind the glove box and is powered by a special chip Musk boasted is better than any other processor in the world "by a huge margin."
Currently the self-driving computer costs $5,000, but the price rises to $7,000 if it's installed after delivery.
Finally, Tesla will deliver software updates to those computers to make it possible for its electric cars to be driven by a robot, without a human in position to take over in case something goes awry. There will be a slight chance of some "fender benders," Musk acknowledged Monday, and indicated Tesla will be liable for accident caused by a vehicle under the control of its robot.
"People will die," Rajkumar predicted. "I can tell you that right now. Because in the real world, crazy things happen."
Musk predicted that the technology for fully self-driving Tesla will roll out at some point from April to June next year. Then, Tesla will need to get regulatory approval for the fully autonomous cars to drive on roads, something Musk predicted would happen in a few states by the end of next year. He didn't specific where Tesla will try to gain approval first.
California, Tesla's biggest U.S. market, requires proof that fully autonomous cars can drive safely on public roads, but most other states aren't as stringent. And experts say there's no federal law requiring preapproval for fully autonomous driving, as long as a vehicle meets federal safety standards, which Teslas already do.
Within three years, Tesla will be manufacturing self-driving cars that don't even have steering wheels or brake pedals in them, Musk said.
If they're allowed on the roads, fully driverless cars would allow Musk to carry out his plan to expand into the ride-hailing market with a fleet of sleek Teslas. Owners of Teslas with the company's self-driving computer could plug into an app-based network to pick up fare-paying passengers when they didn't need to use their vehicle.
Musk theorizes that a ride-hailing service similar to Uber and Lyft will boost Tesla's revenue and make it easier for the company to sell its cars to consumers who could effectively lower the cost of ownership by making money on the side. Tesla would get 20% to 25% of each fare in the network.
Tesla also intends to convert all the electric cars under leasing contracts to be turned into robotaxis upon their return.
Uber and Lyft also consider driverless cars to be one of the keys to making money from their still unprofitable services, but haven't set a specific timetable for achieving that breakthrough while they continue to work on their own autonomous technology.
Waymo rolled out a ride-hailing service using self-driving vehicles late last year in the Phoenix area, but it only available to a small pool of passengers who were previously enrolled in a test program. And all the cars in Waymo's ride-hailing service still have a human behind the steering wheel ready to take control.
The Waymo cars also have Lidar, something experts remain convinced must be part of any fully self-driving car, despite Musk's colorful contentions otherwise.
“Vehicles that don’t have Lidar, that don’t have advanced radar, that haven’t captured a 3-D map are not self-driving vehicles,” Ken Washington, Ford’s chief technical officer, said during a recent interview with Recode. “They are great consumer vehicles with really good driver-assist technology.”
It's a hell of a time to be working as a young space engineer in the United States. Back in the day—and by that we mean less than 10 years ago—engineers had no options but to work inside massive aerospace firms, toiling away on small minutiae of aerospace projects that may never make it past the drawing board. And for most of their careers, they'd remain far away from any hardware that actually flew.
But these days there are options—private space companies working on a plethora of spacecraft and launch vehicles. One of the smallest of these new space firms, with a staff of less than 30, is Masten Space Systems. Headquartered in Mojave Air and Spaceport in California, it's a place where young, tanned space engineers work on projects like rocket-powered landers for NASA and an unmanned spaceplane for the Pentagon.
What's it like to toil in the desert, working on the fringe of aerospace industry? Here are some thoughts from two of MSS' young engineers.
"I literally went on Google Maps and was looking at all the other companies on the airport."Q: What brought you to Masten?
Joey Oberholtzer, 25, Engineer: Popular Mechanics was actually the first, and only, magazine subscription I purchased. The DIY spirit of PM is exactly my style, plus it showed me all that technology could be and might become. I kept every edition, and during college I actually went back through them trying to find small innovative companies to apply to. The article on Scaled Composites's ship was one of the first times I heard of the company, which gave me hope that small aerospace companies existed. It is because of Scaled Composites that I found out about Masten. I literally went on Google Maps and was looking at all the other companies on the airport. So in some way PM is the reason I have the greatest job.
Aerospace is an industry of giants fueled largely by defense contracts and the airlines. That's why, just a few years ago, I wasn't sure a company like Masten could even exist. I have always loved working with my hands and being able to see projects through to completion. Before Masten I worked in production flight test with Boeing and nuclear refueling with the Navy. In these positions I worked with brilliant engineers and spent a lot of time working directly with hardware; two things that are important to me. However, I observed that the culture lends itself to "specialization", so you get pigeonholed as the "gear" engineer or the "fuel system" engineer. With a small company or a startup you are required to wear several hats. Having your hands in many aspects of a project gives you the connection necessary to see areas where high level innovation is needed.
Kyle Nyberg, 26, Engineer: Halfway through my education at The University of Washington in Seattle, I interned at Boeing under the 777 Propulsion department. Good people, good company, but I missed handling hardware and got very restless sitting at a desk all day. I had assumed that the next 40 years of my life would be spent in a cubicle and that really freaked me out—I seriously considered quitting engineering or finding something completely different.
For a while I was meeting with Navy recruiters to become a fighter pilot. Soon after I was approached by an individual in the CIA and was later offered an interview, before deciding it was too life-changing for me. That was a pretty erratic period for me, I was flipping over a lot of rocks at once. I calmed down and completed my aerospace degree.
I stumbled across a Masten job opening after college graduation. I'd never heard of them but the work description sounded up my alley. Within about 4 weeks after first hearing the name "Masten," I had packed my life into my Corolla and was on my way down to the Mojave Desert to start work, four years ago now. Been there ever since.
"I had packed my life into my Corolla and was on my way down to the Mojave Desert."Q: What's good about working for such a small aerospace company?
Oberholtzer: I have the resources to move quickly from spitballing an idea with other engineers to drawing up a design, fabricating, and testing without friction from management or bureaucracy. This creative freedom is possible because every engineer is aware of the responsibility they have to their coworkers, that at the end of the day their work will be right. A lazy moment could result in the delay of a program, the loss of a vehicle during testing, or an injury, the consequences of which may be devastating. The engineering managers come from this culture of rapid innovation so they are able give significant control to the engineers allowing the organic development process to flow, adding in structure where it is needed.
Nyberg: In a small scrappy company like Masten, the engineers are given both the pleasure—and frustration—of fabricating their designs with their own hands, which is very uncommon. We're a company of tinkerers, and a core philosophy is that an engineer who physically builds, repairs, and maintains their own designs becomes tattooed in a way—either by the satisfaction of a well-built design, or just as frequently, by the frustration and revelation of how you'll improve it "next time." When a teammate cursing an inaccessible bolt is the same teammate who designed the part in the first place, something very interesting happens: their designs mature at an absurdly fast rate.
When you personally get burned by your own design that looked perfect on paper, that lesson gets branded directly into your brainstem. You never forget it, and that's how engineering intuition is accelerated. Pathways get unlocked in your brain and you develop an eerie level of foresight. That foresight, that ability to accurately imagine and predict the future, is an immensely powerful engineering tool. It's why we're so good at what we do.
"They spend more time thinking about work, because it's by far the most stimulating activity."Q: Are there drawbacks to working for a small firm?
Oberholtzer: This is the most fulfilling job I have ever had, but even as a full-time engineer with Masten, I make less money than I did during any of my three college internships. It's worth it.
Nyberg: There's the usual sacrifices of lower salaries and reduced resources, but the dominating sacrifice when choosing to work here is the location: the desert. A lot of young, ambitious engineers flock out to these desert locations to work on groundbreaking technology for a growing number of companies.
It was a tremendous shock for me leaving a fun city on the water, a college packed with young people and all of my friends and family, and moving to the middle of a desert where I didn't know anyone. There are things you don't think about until you live here, like driving several hours to go on a coffee date, meet new friends, or just see the ocean, and that can really get to you after months or years. Suddenly you have to work, and I mean really work, to maintain a healthy personal life, and it's easy to get cooped up out here and isolate yourself. The turnover rate is noticeable at every one of these companies, and young engineers get burnt out and homesick, we see it all the time.
It's a tricky situation, because a lot of this cool technology inherently requires isolated, wide open spaces, which is why you see aerospace companies setting up offices in the desert regions of Texas, New Mexico, and California lately. The isolation offers some benefits to the industry, too: it attracts the talented diehards who are willing to move here, and once they move, they tend to work longer hours and spend more time thinking about work, because it's by far the most stimulating activity in the area. That kind of life can be difficult to sustain for a lot of people, and they end up trading away the cool job for a better work/life balance in another city after several years. Engineering firms out here lose talent this way, and it's a really difficult problem to solve.
