Windows PowerShell 6 never got out of beta, it seems. PowerShell Core 6.0 is considered to be a superset of Windows PowerShell 5.1 (the current and last Windows PowerShell version), though, so Microsoft just stuck the 6.0 numbering onto PowerShell Core product.
That seems to be the explanation. To add to the confusion, there are also PowerShell Core 5.0/5.1 versions in existence that were released specifically just for use with Nano Server. Nano Server is Microsoft's minimal footprint configuration option for Windows Server 2016.
PowerShell Core 6.0 and Existing ScriptsGiven that PowerShell Core represent Microsoft's future development direction, will organizations now have to convert their Windows PowerShell scripts into PowerShell Core 6.0 scripts? Lee on the PowerShell team downplayed that idea in a PowerShell AMA session response:
Existing Windows PowerShell scripts will continue to work on Windows PowerShell as it's fully supported so there's no requirement to port existing scripts to PSCore6. Since PSCore6 works side-by-side with Windows PowerShell, you should be able to use both concurrently. If you want to leverage some of the new language or cmdlets enhancements with PSCore6, you may have to make some changes to existing scripts if they have dependencies on Windows PowerShell specific modules. Over time as we get more cmdlet coverage on PSCore6, this will be less of an issue. There is currently no plan to remove Windows PowerShell nor put PSCore6 inbox on Windows.
Joey Aiello, a program manager on the PowerShell team, added that PowerShell Core is gaining module support and that "over time, we'll be doing more to make modules more compatible via the WindowsPowerShellCompatibilityPack module." In addition, Microsoft plans to support Windows PowerShell "at least as long as Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 are supported."
Other observers in the thread noted that there can be breaking changes between PowerShell versions when moving to PowerShell Core 6.0. Older scripts likely will have to be retested. In particular, there could be problems with Windows automation and third-party snap-ins.
Vendors will have to ensure that their PowerShell snap-ins work with .NET Standard, according to a session comment by Snover.

Plenty of players on the Knicks roster were rumored to be up for grabs. Enes Kanter’s time in New York is expected to come to an end sooner rather than later. It was suspected New York was looking to deal Noah Vonleh in exchange for a future draft pick as well. And Tim Hardaway Jr. and Courtney Lee were on the block, with the Knicks were looking to clear cap space. New Yorkers were prepared for pretty much anything during the always wild week leading up to the NBA’s February 7th trade deadline. Yet, everyone assumed that one player that off limits was Kristaps Porzingis.
KP hasn’t played all season, as he’s rehabbing his torn ACL. And, as a pending restricted free agent, the Knicks controlled his rights for at least one more season. However, on Thursday afternoon, word leaked that Porzingis had expressed “concern” over the direction of the franchise in a seemingly contentious meeting with the Knicks front office. Within an hour, the NBA’s top reporters were tweeting that Kristaps had been dealt to Dallas. At 6:01 pm EST, the Knicks announced that KP had been officially traded to the Mavericks.
Per New York’s press release, the Knicks acquired guard Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan, Wesley Matthews and two future first-round draft picks from Dallas in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis, and Tim Hardaway Jr., Trey Burke and Courtney Lee. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Dallas is sending New York a 2021 unprotected first-round pick and a 2023 protected first-round pick (1-10) in the deal.
Now that the trade has been consummated, let's take a look at the pros and cons of the deal from a Knicks perspective.
The Unicorn has left New York, leaving a trail of tears in his wake. Make no mistake, Kristaps Porzingis had etched a special place in the hearts of Knicks fans despite the short time he spent in a Knickerbockers uniform. New Yorkers hadn’t had a special homegrown player to call their own since Patrick Ewing was drafted out of Georgetown in June of 1985. KP exploded out of the gates his rookie season and his upside was upside was immediately undeniable. Knicks fans everywhere quickly fell head over heels, and became overly protective of their beloved “large Latvian son.”
Porzingis’ remarkably unique skill set seemed ideally suited to the modern NBA game: A freakish 7-3 giant who could move and shoot like a guard, yet protect the paint like a traditional center. Over his first 150 career games, Porzingis had made more 3-pointers than Reggie Miller, Kevin Durant and James Harden during their first 150 career contests, while also blocking more shots than Rudy Gobert and Dwight Howard did in their first 150 games. Then, last season, he looked like an MVP candidate early on, as he averaged 30 PPG over the first few weeks of the year.
While his ACL injury undoubtedly complicates his future, many Knicks fans had invested a lot of hope in KP, as he emerged as the undisputed face of the franchise.
Now, instead of Porzingis, the Knicks have to place their faith in the Knicks front office and the allure of New York City, as trading away KP allowed the Knicks to unload the contracts of Tim Hardaway Jr. (two years, $37.1 million) and Courtney Lee (one year, $12.6 million).
With Porzingis’ $17 million cap hold also off the books this summer, the Knicks are poised to enter the 2019 free agency frenzy with approximately $74.5 million in cap space to lavish on elite free agents. And clearing as much cap space as possible seems to be GM Scott Perry’s primary motivation. Typically, when organizations even consider trading a young star with the appeal of Porzingis, they will dangle said player for days or weeks, in an effort to flush out every potential offer. While we don’t know the details leading up to the completion of this blockbuster deal, it appeared the Knicks front office moved quickly. Did they thoroughly test the market to see what type of established players they could have netted in exchange for KP?
In the process, they may have boxed themselves into a corner, and put a tremendous amount of pressure on themselves to hit a grand slam this summer.
And that’s one reason why this trade represents a significant risk. As of Thursday morning, the Knicks had multiple paths toward a return to respectability. Even if they didn’t win the lottery and then also struck out in free agency, Knicks fans would still be able to remain optimistic about a future focused on the return of a healthy Porzingis and a cadre of young, talented players, in addition to the retention of future cap space. With KP no longer on the roster, that road to success has been razed and is now a dead end. Even if they land an ultra-promising prospect in the draft, how confident can New Yorkers be that he would make MSG his home for the duration of his career? Almost unbelievably, the last Knicks draft pick to re-sign in New York on a multi-year contract at the end of his rookie deal was Charlie Ward, who was drafted in 1994.
Now, if Perry and team president Steve Mills fail to lure a top-tier free agent this summer, how do they get a heartbroken fan base excited about the future? Do they tout all the free agents that may be available in 2020? If they keep kicking the can down the road (which would be far wiser than foolishly overpaying for a veteran past his prime), it will be an extremely tough sell to New Yorkers who may have to watch Porzingis return to form alongside Luka Doncic in Dallas. The Knicks would likely be amongst the very worst teams in the league for yet another season. How long does owner Jim Dolan stay patient in that scenario?
Furthermore, if the goal all along was to lure the best free agents possible, Porzingis was thought to be a magnet that would attract great players. A major selling point for signing with the Knicks was the opportunity to play alongside Porzingis in his prime. That’s obviously out the window now.
In addition, the responsibility to reshape the roster falls on the Knicks front office, which understandably is vexing for longsuffering Knicks fans. It was Mills who foolishly inked Tim Hardaway Jr. to an outrageous four-year, $71 million contract before Scott Perry was hired. Less than three years later, the Knicks had to part with a franchise cornerstone in order to dump that deal. To his credit, Perry has been far better as the lead decision-maker since coming aboard, plucking a few diamonds in the rough (Mitchell Robinson, Allozo Trier) via the draft and making shrewd free-agent signings on a limited budget (i.e. Noah Vonleh).
Still, it’s certainly understandable if MSG denizens are more than a bit reluctant to put their faith in a front office that has burned then time and time again.
While New Yorkers were pained to part ways with Porzingis, their anger will be but a distant memory if the Knicks are somehow able to reel in two big fish come July.
With all those contractual commitments now clogging up the Mavs’ cap, it’s quite possible the Knicks will enter this offseason with more cap space than any other team in the league. It’s been a very, very long time since New York could make such a claim. And it’s an ideal time to be flush with spending money. The 2019 free agent crop is one of the best in recent history.
Mills and Perry will have the ability to sign both a player with ten-plus years of experience to a max contract, as well and one with 7-9 years of experience. Yes, that means New York could ink both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to max pacts. Or, say, Kawhi Leonard and Klay Thompson. (Here are rankings of the best guards, forwards and centers set to hit the open market this July). One other potential outcome, should Durant agree to join the Knicks, is KD possibly convincing Anthony Davis to relocate to NYC long-term as well. If so, the Knicks could offer New Orleans a package of cost-controlled players, including Kevin Knox and Dennis Smith Jr., along with a bevy of first-round picks. With excess cap space at their disposal, they could even entice the Pelicans by agreeing to take on the final year and $12.8 million remaining on Solomon Hill’s contract.
This begs the question: Was the Knicks front office willing to trade away Porzingis and clear out cap space because they have reliable information, via back channels, that a superstar such as Durant already has his sights set on New York? We’ll find out in four months.
While other teams can also offer Durant a max contract, no other organization can present KD with a blank canvas in the way the Knicks can. This is a pitch that’s unique to New York. Should Durant chose to head East to NYC, not only will he be able to select a max-level running mate of his choice, he’ll have input on fleshing out a barren roster. For the first time in forever, the Knicks don’t have a single albatross contract on their spreadsheet. New York doesn't have a single player on their squad with a guaranteed salary of more than $5 million for 2019-20. As of today, the Knicks highest-paid player next season will be Frank Ntilikina, who is set to earn $4.8 million.
The other issue that has to be acknowledged is that the Knicks may have had their hand forced. In the press release announcing the deal, Perry is quoted as saying Porzigis requested a trade on Thursday. Later in the evening, Steve Mills said Porzingis made it clear that he "didn't want to be a part of our group."
Still, it’s important to remember that Porzingis would have to make an insanely risky financial decision this summer, even if he desperately wanted to leave New York badly. Because he is a restricted free agent, KP basically had two choices this summer. He could have accepted his qualifying offer of $4.5 million (with zero guaranteed money past next season) or he could have inked a five-year extension north of $150 million. Even if Porzingis was bellyaching and threatening to sign the QO, the Knicks could have called his bluff. No player in NBA history has rejected a max offer off his rookie contract. But, who that have resulted in a tenable working environment?
Either way, the Knicks, feeling uneasy about an uncertain future, felt preemptively moving on from Porzingis was their best course of action. While it’s difficult to feel overly confident that they will be able to drastically reshape their roster and construct a formidable squad via free agency, it’s understandable if they felt the relationship was irreparable.
While KP clearly felt a disconnect with the prior management team headed by Phil Jackson, the Knicks new brain trust went out their way to build bridges and curry favor with Porzingis, and his elder brother Janis, who serves as his agent. Perry and Mills were effusive in their praise of Porzingis whenever asked queried by the media. Coach David Fizdale flew to Latvia with his wife to break bread with KP and his family. However, for reasons we may never know, Porzingis never seemed to reciprocate the love. In fact, via passive-aggressive social media posts, he appeared to maintain a certain level of contempt.
Parting ways with Porzingis now also makes sense considering there’s a real possibility KP simply never fulfills his immense promise. Even before the ACL injury, he had shown plenty of signs of fragility. Over his first two seasons in the NBA, Kristaps missed games due to injuries to his left Achilles, right shoulder, left groin, left leg, right ankle, and right foot. He appeared in only 186 out of a possible 296 games since he was drafted. Athletes of his size and style of play tend to become more injury-prone later in their careers, as opposed to miraculously avoiding additional ailments. While having to settle for cents on the dollar due to the trade demand and his pending free agency, there’s no guarantee that New York would have been able to secure a better package next February, or at a date in the future. Even after a player returns from a severe knee injury, it usually takes them another full year before they are close to 100 percent and fully recovered.
Based on what we’ve seen, what are the chances Kristaps stays happy AND healthy over the next five years? With his injury history and diva-ish histrionics, and the fact that he wasn’t willing to commit to the franchise longterm; taking that all into account, New York decided they were better off diversifying their portfolio than investing $158 million worth of eggs in the KP basket.
Looking forward, obviously, a lot depends on how ping pong balls bounce on the night of May 14th (the date of the 2019 lottery drawing), as potential free agents would undoubtedly be intrigued of playing alongside Zion Williamson in the Big Apple. Still, even if they don’t hit the lottery, assuming the Knicks land a coveted prospect near the top of next June’s draft, they still have plenty of promising assets on their roster.
Kevin Knox is a just a baby at 19 years old but has already flashed star potential. Mitchell Robinson is only 20 and is locked into a team-friendly deal that pays him less than 2% of the cap over the next three seasons. With KP out of the picture, Robinson is now the projected starting center of the future, and will earn $30 million less than Porzingis per season. Allonzo Trier is in the midst of one of the most impressive seasons by an undrafted rookie in NBA history. With Kristaps gone, it now seems a bit more likely the Knicks would be content to hold on to Noah Vonleh past the deadline and use some of their cap space to re-sign this summer. (Vonleh, who was 19 when he was drafted, has come into his own this season and is actually just a few months older than Trier.) Despite all his offensive struggles, Frank Ntilikina is also only 20 years old and still projects an elite perimeter defender.
The Knicks also got back two future firsts in the deal with Dallas. Far too often in the past, New York was rightfully ridiculed because they were the team sending away future first-rounders, not receiving them. According to ESPN’s Kevin Pelton, the last trade where a team traded away two future first-round picks without getting one in return was the Heat's trade for Goran Dragic at the 2015 trade deadline. In addition, an unprotected pick is always interesting. (What happens if KP leaves Dallas and Doncic is injured the year that pick conveys to New York?)
Prior to 2017 and 20118, the Knicks had not made first-round picks in consecutive years since 2008 and 2009. As of today, New York owns all their future first-round picks going forward and are likely set to make seven first-round selections over the next five years.
Let's not forget Dennis Smith Jr., who seems to be the forgotten piece in this deal. Yes, he has struggled with his defensive tenacity and offensive efficiency over his first 1.5 seasons in the league, but the kid has played just 101 games in his NBA career. In 2017-18, he became only the twelfth rookie in NBA history to average over 15 points and five assists before turning 21. The other 11 players in this exclusive club are Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Stephon Marbury, LeBron James, Chris Paul, Brandon Jennings, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Tyreke Evans, John Wall and Kyrie Irving.
Smith's athleticism and explosion off the bounce are what scouts dream of when looking for lead guards, especially in today’s NBA, when having a point guard capable of penetrating into the paint is often imperative. Just two days ago, Smith tallied 13 points, a career-high 15 assists and ten rebounds at MSG in a victory over the Knicks, becoming the second-youngest player ever to record a triple-double at the current Madison Square Garden (behind only Magic Johnson). Over his final four games in a Mavs uniform, Smith averaged 15.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists per contest.
While DSJ wasn’t a fit in Dallas, as Doncic is most effective when he’s facilitating the team’s offense, plenty of teams would have loved to take a crack at unlocking Smith’s latent potential. And coach Fizdale has already shown an aptitude for getting the most out of extremely talented former lottery picks.
Finally, New York has their much-coveted cap space to serve as a beacon of hope for the future.
All told, it’s impossible to pass judgment this trade today. In fact, we won’t even be able to get a firm idea of how it may finally shake out until we are sipping beers on July 4th weekend.
