Also, the learning experience did not include microblogging or tweeting. Although students could share their ideas and opinions via social media, they were not required to do so.

Twitter is a free social media microblogging platform that facilitates the dissemination, sharing, and exchange of current information among users. The social nature of the platform facilitates access to content and people in real time, which is not possible through the use of traditional textbooks. Consumers of content posted on Twitter and other social media sites must be attentive to the quality of the source and to the validity of the content they access. Faculty who design learning experiences that involve the use of social media must be attentive to institutional policies that safeguard students in public social spaces. This will help to ensure students safely benefit from the social learning that can occur via the medium.
Ross and Myers (2017) reported that undergraduate nursing students respond positively to the use of social media in nursing education. However, evidence to support the use of social media-based teaching strategies is lacking. This article provides evidence that integrating microblogging into an online RN-to-BSN course is an effective approach to engage students in health care policy. Students embraced the invitation to participate in the learning experience, and their final reflections revealed a sort of epiphany about those directly involved in policy, those who influence it, and, ultimately, their role in the process. Students recognized that by accessing current information readily available from individuals and groups, they could engage in initiatives specific to health care policy. Health care policy became more concrete than abstract. The learning experience allowed students to observe health care policy in action, which helped them to see the possibilities in terms of fulfilling their professional nursing responsibility. The students linked with individuals and organizations, and they discovered how to become involved in the conversation beyond the Health Policy course.
This educational innovation could be replicated in health care policy courses at any level of nursing education. The findings extend what is known about the use of social media in nursing education and serve as the basis for curriculum improvement in the area of health care policy. Integrating additional learning activities that allow students to apply what they learn via Twitter would be beneficial. For example, students could include engage in a virtual debate of prevalent issues that surface via social media. This educational innovation could facilitate application of new knowledge, a more in-depth analysis of current issues, and subsequently increase the number of nurses engaging in the political process and advocating for patients, families, and communities (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008), as well as serving on boards that improve health and ensure effective and efficient health care systems (Nurses on Boards Coalition, 2017).References
