As HP discover involves a climax, HP has some uncomfortable questions it must answer. in this visitor submit by means of colleague John Appleby, he asks the query - is HP Superdome even relevant to the future of business functions? if you accept as true with what John says as reality then the reply is a convincing 'no.' So why is HP pumping funds into this lifeless tech rat hole?
John Appleby says:
I had a slightly uncomfortable dialog with certainly one of my earnings individuals this week, who instructed me that certainly one of their purchasers had just bought a fresh HP Superdome2 and wanted to understand if our utility would run SAP application. I needed to clarify to him that the SAP BusinessObjects portfolio no longer runs on that platform.
And in case you think they are being lazy, Oracle aren't setting up for this platform any longer. in case you think Larry Ellison is making an attempt to screw HP, neither are Microsoft – neither for his or her home windows OS (the closing edition is windows 2008 R2) or for his or her SQL Server RDBMS. neither is Linux seller Redhat.
if you consider there is a utility dealer conspiracy, there at the moment are only 5 vendors that sell Intel Itanium based mostly programs: HP, Bull, NEC, Inspur and Huawei. and i hear that over 90% of the CPUs are bought for HP methods. So what’s incorrect with it? Let’s see…
HP is paying Intel to preserve it alive
When Oracle ceased construction on the platform, HP went nuts and sued them for saying that Itanium turned into lifeless. It reasonably backfired when it became out that HP become paying Intel $690m to hold it alive. Given HP’s precarious state at the moment, it might be remiss to indicate that this were a winning strategy.
tempo of innovation
The present chip became codenamed Tukwila and a couple of years late to market. With 2 year historical aspects and performance. It has below half the efficiency per core of equal Intel x64 and IBM Power7 CPUs as well as 50% more power consumption. The good-conclusion CPU is 185W and four cores in comparison to the Intel Westmere-EX which is 130W and 10 cores. sure – 1/four the vigor per core and 5x the efficiency per socket.
The next era CPU, Poulson, was scheduled for 2009 and still hasn’t been delivered in 2012. I think you recognize the place Intel is investing its R&D: the successor to the x64 Westmere-EX platform, referred to as Ivy Bridge.
Resilience, Availability & Serviceability
This used to be the reason to buy Itanium. however lamentably in many techniques, the Intel Westmere-EX has enhanced RAS facets than Itanium. Westmere-EX can predict and exclude memory failure, improve from reminiscence disasters and mirror memory. Plus Westmere-EX can predict and re-route chip interconnect (QPI) screw ups and recuperate. it's literally bulletproof.
Itanium has 2-12 months ancient technology in this appreciate and the tempo of innovation during this area is truly vital on account of in-memory computing.
dimension and energy
This half is scary. a typical HP Superdome 128-core gadget is 6’6? high. An equal IBM Westmere-EX 80-core system is 12? high. The HP unit will use 6kW for the CPUs on my own and the IBM will use 1kW. certainly add some more for reminiscence and other stuff, however you get the theory. Itanium is 1/6 the vigor performance. and should soak up massive swathes of datacenter house. And kill lots of trees.
Oracle have gone heavily after HP here with their “cash for Clunkers” programme. Now this is average Oracle bully behaviour but it is tough to argue with their good judgment.
HP Superdome consumers are facing expensive “forklift improvements” when upgrading from lifeless-end PA-RISC and Itanium processors and HP-UX.
Now you could exchange for your legacy HP Superdome servers and receive a 50% bargain on Oracle’s solar SPARC business M8000 and M9000 servers—cozy and extremely purchasable servers for working mission-crucial, business database and company applications.
And this has had a dramatic impact on revenue – HP Itanium revenue are falling quarter on quarter and are under $400m per quarter – falling from over $800m in q4 2010. HP is suing Oracle over this but the harm has been carried out.
observe that a blogger went after Oracle for this with “who’s the clunker?“, however it is an lousy article. specially, the SPARC platform has a 5-yr roadmap. The closest factor i will discover to this from HP is mission Odyssey, which looks suspiciously like a roadmap to migrate valued clientele from HP-UX/Itanium to Linux/x86, or this one it really is from 2009.
aspects & feature assessment
somebody wrote a evaluation of HP and Oracle on this which became naturally biased so i assumed i'd lay down some information! Lets evaluate three roughly in a similar fashion powered methods (with the aid of SAP’s utility benchmark). Please note that HP haven't licensed any techniques so I had to estimate their SAPS ranking in accordance with information accessible for the SPEC benchmark.HP Superdome2 IBM POWER7 Intel Westmere-EX CPU 32-CPU (128-core) 8-CPU (sixty four-core) 8-CPU (80-core) SAP SD 2-tier benchmark 120k SAPS (940 SAPS/core) 200k SAPS (3125 SAPS/core) 120k SAPS (1500 SAPS/core) Configuration & cost 512 GB of memory with HP-UX and 3 years primary HW and SW assist lists for $1,722,390 512GB of memory, AIX UNIX and 3 years primary HW and SW aid lists for <$a millionIntel Westmere-EX with 512GB of reminiscence, SuSe Linux and 3 years primary HW and SW guide lists for <$one hundred,000 measurement and vigour intake36U / 9kW 8U / three.2KW 8U / 4kW Roadmap 2 extra generations of Itanium, the first of which is 3 years late to market. there is a commitment to 2 more generations of IBM vigour and that they have an in depth roadmap purchasable here. What should be the demise knoll?
here's exciting because ninety five% of Itanium systems have been shipped by way of HP in 2008, according to Gartner. 90% of people who run Itanium for SAP run the HP-UX OS. I’d love to see the stats but from my SAP records vs the basic methods sold, I estimate that as a minimum 30% of those are used to run SAP – i think here is the greatest single application dealer that runs Itanium.
And SAP hasn’t referred to so, but they're going to cease construction on the Itanium platform. They ought to because the best database that runs on that platform is Oracle 11g (or MSSQL on windows 2008).
Disclosure: this is a republished submit from John Appleby's long-established post.
Add to this SAP’s promoting program around its own Sybase ASE database and HP’s monetary lack of ability to prop up Itanium and maybe you're going to agree that the Superdome will move from an endangered species to a dead duck.
MAKER OF high priced PRINTER INK HP has launched Superdome 2 servers sporting Intel's Itanium 9500 series chips.
HP has proven staunch aid for Intel's Itanium processor structure in recent years, taking Oracle to courtroom and forcing it to continue developing application for the IA64 architecture. Now HP has updated its latitude of Integrity servers, including its headline Superdome servers to make use of Itanium 2 processors.
With Microsoft and pink Hat having introduced that they're going to cease help for Intel's Itanium chip it became left to HP to promote its own HP-UX, OpenVMS and Nonstop operating programs on its latest servers. When Mark Payne, VP of HP's enterprise important systems in EMEA, turned into requested which changed into HP's most vital software dealer, he mentioned SAP in preference to bitter rival Oracle, despite the fact that relational databases is one in every of HP's core use circumstances for its Itanium servers.
HP also validated that it's engaged on making X86 mission-important, the place valued clientele may be able to run Microsoft's home windows and Linux operating programs, besides the fact that children Payne would not say when that can be executed. in spite of this the firm sees continued business for its operating systems and Payne informed The INQUIRER that valued clientele that wanted to stream off operating systems such as HP-UX would have accomplished so with the aid of now.
whereas HP turned into busy speakme up its Superdome 2 package, the firm also updated its HP-UX working system bringing support for 256 cores per server. The firm also claimed that HP-UX 11iv3 can notice safety threats 10 times sooner than old generations, with Payne telling The INQUIRER that the enterprise takes a conservative approach to versioning on HP-UX due to utility certification necessities.
HP noted that its Superdome 2 servers might be accessible in December with pricing starting at $6,490 per blade. µ
Hewlett-Packard wants to remind all and sundry that it be nonetheless within the excessive-end server business. It wishes you to understand that due to the fact its blade-ish Superdome machines shipped at the beginning of the fall, revenue are ramping up in keeping with aggressive RISC/Unix iron from IBM and Oracle/Fujitsu.
HP's PR laptop, attempting to find anything respectable to say about its business crucial techniques division – which peddles the high-end Superdome and entry and midrange Integrity blade and rack servers as well as selling and aiding old AlphaServer, HP 9000, HP 3000, and NonStop equipment – says that in the remaining quarter of its fiscal 2010 year resulted in October it shipped well-nigh four hundred of the Superdome 2 bins.
HP is relatively plenty the ultimate of the Itanium server makers and supports its HP-UX, OpenVMS, and NonStop working methods on the Integrity and Superdome boxes. home windows Server 2008 and RHEL 5 are the closing windows and Linux releases supported on any Itanium servers, and HP also helps these on the Integrity and Superdome machines both as the sole operating device field or on its domestic-grown IntegrityVM digital desktop hypervisor.
In its most fresh financial record, HP spoke of that income within the company vital systems division rose via 10.1 per cent to $695m. while here is a tremendous development, the Itanium-based mostly machines are completely dwarfed through revenue of ProLiant and BladeSystem machines in response to Xeon and Opteron processors, which accounted for $3.53bn in revenues in q4 and which grew through 32.three per cent in comparison to the 12 months-ago period.
Let's take a look at some heritage of fourth quarters at HP for the BCS unit. BCS was a significantly better and extra vital enterprise for HP returned in 2004, when the unit had $1.03bn of income within the fourth quarter of that yr. (Itanium-primarily based machines were simplest $161m of that total six years in the past.) Two years later, BCS sales had been $987m in q4 2006, but Integrity's share had grown to $444m. In q4 2007, BCS bounced up to $1.02bn and in q4 2008, because the extraordinary Recession became taking cling, it fell to $935m however Itanium-based mostly machines accounted for 83 per cent of revenues.
In 2009, there become no restoration for Integrity machines at HP as a result of Intel's successive delays in bringing the "Tukwila" quad-core Itanium 9300 processors to market. The delays in new iron - which constantly even have superior pricing within the server racket as well as a good deal enhanced bang for the buck - coupled with the vulnerable financial system hammered the BCS product line, which had a 33 per cent income drop in q4 2009 to $631m.
The point is, a ten.1 per cent bump to $695m is incredible, however is not as colossal a bump as what HP needs to get BCS lower back up to its former $1bn or so typical for a fourth quarter. The large majority of HP's BCS earnings are driven with the aid of its HP-UX Unix variant, and all the Unix providers are being crunched on the salary entrance and have lengthy considering that viewed their shipment numbers massively compressed. The RISC/Itanium Unix racket is fortunate to have 50,000 unit shipments per quarter nowadays--compared to neatly over 2 million devices for x64-based mostly bins. these Unix bins are commonly extra scalable, but they're also a hell of a lot more high priced, too, and force very tidy profits and expensive (and intensely essentially captive) utility stacks.
nevertheless, HP has a right to be optimistic in that the Superdome 2 machines are getting some traction, regardless of all of the Itanium bashing that goes on in the IT press and analyst group. The HP-UX-Itanium combo is no much less tenable from a technical or economic standpoint than IBM's vigor-AIX combo or Oracle's Sparc/Solaris combo. All three are seeing dwindling income, as the newest numbers out of Gartner the day past for calendar Q3 server income exhibit. The respectable news for HP is that it has the dominant place in Xeon and Opteron server earnings, however the dangerous news is that its Integrity and Superdome groups do not throw of the types of legacy profits that large Blue's mainframes do.
Lorraine Bartlett, vice president of international advertising and marketing, approach, and operations for the BCS unit, instructed El Reg in an email change that the Integrity blade servers, that have been introduced at the identical time as the Superdome 2 machines returned in April, are identifying up steam, too. Bartlett would now not give numbers, however stated that income of Integrity blade servers greater than doubled sequentially from fiscal Q3 to this autumn and that the massive majority of Integrity blade servers bought in fiscal this fall were the use of the quad-core Itanium 9300s. El Reg drilled down into these SMP-ready Tukwila blades right here and walked you in the course of the HP-UX price cut on the brand new blades in may also.
With the rate reduce on HP-UX 11i v3 for the brand new Integrity BL860c i2, BL870c i2, and BL890c i2 blades as high as 50 per cent per socket and hardware fees staying more or much less the equal as prior Integrity blades however yielding twice the oomph, it isn't any ask yourself the company is doubling sequentially. The question is, how long can that earnings stream retain roaring?
IBM is asking itself the same query about Power7 servers and equipment zEnterprise 196 mainframes, too. it is hard to say what Oracle and Fujitsu have deliberate for their huge Sparc iron, given that so far as any person outdoor the groups is aware of the two have not yet come to an agreement about future Sparc chip and gadget construction. might be that is a component of the dawn SuperCluster announcement arising later this week. ®

HP recently took the lead in server sales from IBM, although there is very little in it. That leap ahead may well be the result of a very busy time for the company since our previous server snapshot more than a year ago. This includes a refresh of the entire Integrity and ProLiant lines, as well as HP making a major play on convergence. Our latest Server Buyer's Guide looks at what the No. 1 server hardware vendor is selling these days.
"HP has invested a lot in systems management and providing single pane of glass management for spanning multiple chip architectures and operating systems," said Dan Olds, an analyst with Gabriel Consulting Group. "This is a compelling and powerful value proposition and is resonating with customers."ProLiant Servers
HP ProLiant servers appear to now be the primary focus of HP. The company owns more than one-third of the x86 server space, well ahead of the competition. According to Olds, HP (NYSE: HPQ) is at around 35 percent in this area, compared to Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) with 21 percent in second spot.
Users have a great deal of choice with the OEM, as it offers dozens of servers that cover the entire x86 gamut. More models are coming out on a monthly basis.
HP's Server Line Up at a Glance
In March, for example, HP added the BL280c, BL2x220c, BL460c, BL490cG6 server blades and the WS460c G6 workstation blade. In addition, rack-optimized servers were added -- the DL160, DL170h, DL180, DL320, DL360 and DL380 G6. The ProLiant ML330 and ML350 G6 tower servers were releases for small business workloads, while the SL160z, SL170z and SL2x170z G6 were designed for scale-out environments.
"Additionally in March, HP announced the next generation of HP ProLiant servers that offer a significant performance boost and enhanced power savings over previous generations, which included the HP ProLiant DL165, DL385 and SL165z G7 servers," said Lorraine Bartlett, vice president of marketing, Business Critical Systems, HP. "The new HP ProLiant G7 servers with AMD Opteron 6100 Series processors increase operational efficiencies."
According to Bartlett, these G7 servers combined with AMD Opteron 6100 series processors deliver a 27 times performance-per-watt increase over earlier models.
The G7 portfolio was again expanded in May with the ProLiant DL360 and DL380 as the new additions. Bartlett said these servers deliver up to a 20-to-1 consolidation ratio, reducing floor space and improving data center capacity.
In June, HP expanded the G7 portfolio yet again with the BL465c, BL685c, BL2x220, BL460c, BL620c and BL680c G7 -- three rackmount systems that include the DL580, DL585 and DL980 G7. These servers are based on Opteron 6100 Series and Intel Xeon 5600/7500 series processors.
Those users who prefer blades or racks, then, have plenty of choice: From simple low-cost models to high-end boxes with all imaginable bells and whistles. Similarly, in the tower category, HP provides a decent range of options. The grid below illustrates the wide range of servers to from which to choose.
Those who want to mix and match ProLiant towers, racks and blades within the data center benefit from HP's Converged Infrastructure portfolio, which is aimed at reducing the price and difficulty of server management by sharing common components across an ProLiant line.
There is also a strong sense of out with the old, in with the new. Many ProLiant G5 servers are being discontinued. These include the DL165 G5, DL185 G5, ML110 G5, ML115 G5, BL2x220 G5, BL460c G5, DL380 G5, DL385 G5 and ML370 G5.
"HP's blade everything strategy has paid off in a big way, and they're still the vendor to beat in this area," said Olds. They've also made the most of their partnerships with both Intel and AMD to offer a very wide range of products."Integrity Servers
According to Olds, however, HP doesn't seem to pay a lot of attention to its Intel Itanium-based Integrity server line. "Their dominance in x86 and blades seems to overshadow the Integrity offerings in terms of marketing focus and investment," he said. "However, HP sells quite a bit of Unix-based gear, typically the second place vendor after the IBM Power brand."
HP is particularly strong in certain segments of the Unix market. HP-UX based systems host more SAP, for example, than either IBM or Oracle (Sun) by a large margin. Olds added that the introduction of the long-delayed Itanium Tukwila processor, a new revisions of the HP-UX operating system and a published roadmap that runs out past five years have given HP's Unix customers a reason to take a look at refreshing their installed base.
Newer servers include Integrity blades, such as the BL860c i2, BL870c i2 and the BL890c i2. Bartlett said they all offer 2.5 times the compute density compared to traditional rack mount servers. These blades use the Intel Itanium 9300 series processor (two to four cores) and come with various amounts of memory. While the BL860c i2 comes with up to 96 GB RAM, the BL890c i2 has up to 384 GB.
But blades aren't the only game in town on Integrity. The rx2800 i2 is a newer two-socket rackmount server aimed at SMBs or small remote deployments, such as branch office applications. It offers expanded memory, I/O and disk capacity in a 2U footprint with eight-core scalability. At the top of the line is the Integrity Superdome 2 that includes a modular, bladed design, common components and standard racks intended to power mission-critical applications.
"HP recently introduced an entirely new design for the Superdome system that emphasizes modularity while preserving the ability to run very large single system images," said Olds. "It's an impressive server, but, typically for HP, seems to be flying under the radar a bit in terms of market awareness."
Some features include an intelligent fault-tolerant Crossbar Fabric that routes data or transactions to the faster, most optimal pathways between blades and I/O. The Superdome boasts power-on-once technology with hot-swappable components, online replaceable crossbars, and the Superdome 2 Analysis Engine for predictive error handling and analysis. It also offers three packages for scale-as-you-grow flexibility, offered in eight-socket, 16-socket and 32-socket configurations.
"For over 10 years HP Integrity servers, including Superdome, have powered some of the world's most demanding, mission-critical environments –- especially in verticals like financial services, manufacturing and distribution, health care, as well as telecommunications," said Bartlett. "There are 81 percent of Global 100 companies and 70 percent of Fortune 100 companies using HP Integrity servers."HP Servers, At a Glance Server Line ProLiant Integrity Other Servers Description x86 servers Itanium processor-based servers with HP-UX and 24x7 fault-tolerant platform with NonStop OS HP 9000 servers, HP AlphaServers, Carrier-Grade servers Processor Type ML Servers:Intel Xeon, Xeon 3000 Sequence, Xeon 5100, Xeon 5200, Xeon 5300, Xeon 5400, Xeon 5600, Xeon DP, Core 2, Pentium D, Celeron D and AMD Opteron, Athlon and SempronDL Servers:Intel Core 2, Xeon 3000 Sequence, Xeon 5000, Sequence, Xeon 5100, Xeon 5200, Xeon 5300, Xeon 5400, Xeon 5600, Xeon 7300, Xeon 7400, Xeon 7500, Pentium D, Celeron D and AMD Opteron 2000, Opteron 2200, Opteron 2300, Opetron 6100, Opteron 8000, Opteron 8300BL (BladeSystem) Servers:Intel Xeon 5100, Xeon 5200, Xeon 5300, Xeon 5400, Xeon 5600, Xeon 7200, Xeon 7300, Xeon 7500, Xeon MP, Core 2 Duo and AMD Opteron 2300, Opteron 8000, Opteron 8300SL (Scale Out) Servers:AMD Opteron 6100, Intel Xeon5600 WS:Xeon 5600 Intel Itanium 9300 seriesIntel Itanium 9100 series HP 9000 serversPA-8900 and PA-8800 AlphaServer systems:64-bit Alpha EV7z, EV7, EV68 Carrier-Grade:Xeon, Itanium 2 Processor Range ML Servers: 1, 2, 4 and 8DL Servers: 1, 2, 4 and 8BL Servers: 2 and 4 Entry-Level: 1-4, 1-8Midrange: 2-8, 2-16, 2-32High-End (Superdome) 2-16, 2-32, 6-128Integrity server blade: 1-2, 2-8Integrity NonStop serversEntry level: 2-4 or 2-8; up to 2040 using clustersMid-range: 2-8; up to 2040 using clustersHigh end: 2-16; up to 4080 using clusters HP 9000 servers: Entry-Level: 1-2, 1-4, 2-8;Midrange: 2-16, 2-32;High-End (Superdome): 4-32, 4-64, 12-128;HP AlphaServer systems:Entry-Level: 1-2;Midrange: 1-8;High-End: 2-64;Carrier-Grade: 1 and 2 Operating Systems Windows, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Novell Open Enterprise Server, NetWare, Solaris 10, VMware ESX 3.x, VMware ESXi 3.5, HP Integrated Citrix XenServer Entry/Mid/High Level: HP-UX 11i v3, HP-UX 11i v2, Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 5 Update 1, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and 11, OpenVMS v8.3 and OpenVMS v8.3-1H1Integrity Server Blade: HP-UX 11i v3, HP-UX 11i v2, Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 5 Update 1, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and 11, OpenVMS v8.3 and OpenVMS v8.3-1H1Integrity NonStop server: NonStop OS HP 9000 servers:HP-UX 11iHP AlphaServers:OpenVMS, Tru64 UNIXCarrier-Grade:HP-UX, Tru64 UNIX, OpenVMS, Windows, Linux Servers ML ServersML115ML110 G6ML150 G6ML330 G6ML350 G6ML370 G6ML310 G5pDL ServersDL580 G5DL585 G5DL785 G5DL120 G6DL160 G6DL 160se G6DL165 G6DL165 G7DL180 G6DL320 G6DL360 G6DL370 G6DL380 G6DL360 G7DL380 G7DL385 G6DL580 G7DL585 G6DL585 G7DL785 G6DL980 G7DL1000 Multi-Node ServersDL170h G6BL (BladeSystem) ServersBL465c G5BL495c G5BL680c G5BL 685c G6BL2x220c G6BL280c G6BL460c G6BL490c G6BL495c G6BL465c G7BL685c G7 Entry-Levelrx2660rx3600rx6660rx2800 i2Integrity NonStop 1200Integrity NonStop 2000Integrity NonStop NS5000STIntegrity NonStop3000ACMidrangerx7640rx8640NonStop 14200NonStop 50000CG (Carrier Grade)NonStop CME (Carrier Grade)High-EndIntegrity BladeBL860cBL860c i2BL870cBL870c i2BL890c i2Integrity NonStop NS 16200Integrity Superdome 2 HP 9000 serversHP AlphaServer systems

SERVER VENDOR HP has released four new Xeon E7 servers that increasingly blur the lines between the capabilities of x86 kit and big-tin custom RISC or Itanium boxes.
Following Intel's launch of the Xeon E7 processors, a number of major manufacturers including Dell and HP revealed their plans to incorporate Intel's latest and greatest server chip. While Dell showed off Poweredge servers with up to 40 cores and 2TB of memory, HP went whole hog and announced blade servers and an 8-socket, 80-core behemoth that supports up to 4TB of RAM.
HP, like Dell before it, touted the performance improvements of its new Proliant G7 servers, which are all pretty standard fare. However what did pique our interest was that while Intel claimed firms could shave 1W of power for every 32GB DIMM, HP went further, claiming its customers can look forward to saving 155W for every 256GB used, through the use of 1.35V DIMMs. With servers able to run 4TB of RAM that's a savings of almost 2,500W, hardly something to be scoffed at.
Kit from both Dell and HP looks mighty impressive on paper. But unlike Dell, HP sells its own line of RISC servers and is a staunch supporter of Intel's Itanium chip with its Integrity and Superdome lines, and it seems that the gap between the two is diminishing.
Talking to The INQUIRER, Michael McNerney, director server planning and marketing business critical systems at HP said that x86 "continued to add performance and reliability" and that "HP was fully leveraging that for its customers". He went onto to say that HP's Integrity line of Itanium servers provided mission critical performance that was built up over time through both hardware and software.
However McNerney did admit that server workloads were "migrating to x86 over time" and that HP was bringing features from its Integrity Itanium line into its x86 Proliant range, such as double device data correction. McNerney did say that there is still some advantages to be had from more traditional high-end server hardware that runs Unix such as the ability for vendors such as HP to "integrate resilience within the firmware and the operating system".
Given the level of investment required by companies to buy high-end RISC or Itanium kit, McNerney was certainly right when he said that HP's Itanium lines will "remain stable for the foreseeable future".
That might be so but when HP is selling an 8-socket, 80-core, 4TB X86 machine that doesn't come with the baggage of Itanium, one has to wonder why Intel continues to bother with Itanium. µ
As HP Discover comes to a climax, HP has some uncomfortable questions it needs to answer. In this guest post by colleague John Appleby, he asks the question - is HP Superdome even relevant to the future of enterprise applications? If you believe what John says as fact then the answer is a resounding 'no.' So why is HP pumping money into this dead tech rat hole?
John Appleby says:
I had a slightly uncomfortable conversation with one of my sales people this week, who told me that one of their customers had just bought a brand new HP Superdome2 and wanted to know if our software would run SAP software. I had to explain to him that the SAP BusinessObjects portfolio no longer runs on that platform.
And in case you think they are being lazy, Oracle will not be developing for this platform any more. In case you think Larry Ellison is trying to screw HP, neither are Microsoft – neither for their Windows OS (the last version is Windows 2008 R2) or for their SQL Server RDBMS. Nor is Linux vendor Redhat.
In case you think there is a software vendor conspiracy, there are now only 5 vendors that sell Intel Itanium based systems: HP, Bull, NEC, Inspur and Huawei. And I hear that over 90% of the CPUs are bought for HP systems. So what’s wrong with it? Let’s see…
HP is paying Intel to keep it alive
When Oracle ceased development on the platform, HP went nuts and sued them for saying that Itanium was dead. It rather backfired when it turned out that HP was paying Intel $690m to keep it alive. Given HP’s precarious state right now, it would be remiss to suggest that this were a winning strategy.
Pace of innovation
The current chip was codenamed Tukwila and 2 years late to market. With 2 year old features and performance. It has under half the performance per core of equivalent Intel x64 and IBM Power7 CPUs as well as 50% more power consumption. The top-end CPU is 185W and 4 cores compared to the Intel Westmere-EX which is 130W and 10 cores. Yes – 1/4 the power per core and 5x the performance per socket.
The next generation CPU, Poulson, was scheduled for 2009 and still hasn’t been delivered in 2012. I think you know where Intel is investing its R&D: the successor to the x64 Westmere-EX platform, called Ivy Bridge.
Resilience, Availability & Serviceability
This used to be the reason to buy Itanium. But unfortunately in many ways, the Intel Westmere-EX has better RAS features than Itanium. Westmere-EX can predict and exclude memory failure, recover from memory failures and mirror memory. Plus Westmere-EX can predict and re-route chip interconnect (QPI) failures and recover. It is literally bulletproof.
Itanium has 2-year old technology in this respect and the pace of innovation in this area is really important because of in-memory computing.
Size and Power
This part is scary. A typical HP Superdome 128-core system is 6’6? high. An equivalent IBM Westmere-EX 80-core system is 12? high. The HP unit will use 6kW for the CPUs alone and the IBM will use 1kW. Obviously add some more for memory and other stuff, but you get the idea. Itanium is 1/6 the power performance. And will take up large swathes of datacenter space. And kill a lot of trees.
Oracle have gone heavily after HP here with their “Cash for Clunkers” programme. Now this is typical Oracle bully behaviour but it is hard to argue with their logic.
HP Superdome customers are facing costly “forklift upgrades” when upgrading from dead-end PA-RISC and Itanium processors and HP-UX.
Now you can trade in your legacy HP Superdome servers and receive a 50% discount on Oracle’s Sun SPARC Enterprise M8000 and M9000 servers—secure and highly available servers for running mission-critical, enterprise database and business applications.
And this has had a dramatic effect on revenue – HP Itanium sales are falling quarter on quarter and are below $400m per quarter – falling from over $800m in Q4 2010. HP is suing Oracle over this but the damage has been done.
Note that a blogger went after Oracle for this with “who’s the clunker?“, but it is an awful article. Notably, the SPARC platform has a 5-year roadmap. The closest thing I can find to this from HP is Project Odyssey, which looks suspiciously like a roadmap to migrate customers from HP-UX/Itanium to Linux/x86, or this one that is from 2009.
Features & Function Comparison
Someone wrote a comparison of HP and Oracle on this which was clearly biased so I thought I would lay down some facts! Lets compare 3 roughly similarly powered systems (by SAP’s application benchmark). Please note that HP have not certified any systems so I had to estimate their SAPS rating based on data available for the SPEC benchmark.HP Superdome2 IBM POWER7 Intel Westmere-EX CPU 32-CPU (128-core) 8-CPU (64-core) 8-CPU (80-core) SAP SD 2-tier benchmark 120k SAPS (940 SAPS/core) 200k SAPS (3125 SAPS/core) 120k SAPS (1500 SAPS/core) Configuration & Cost 512 GB of memory with HP-UX and 3 years basic HW and SW support lists for $1,722,390 512GB of memory, AIX UNIX and 3 years basic HW and SW support lists for <$1,000,000 Intel Westmere-EX with 512GB of memory, SuSe Linux and 3 years basic HW and SW support lists for <$100,000 Size and Power Consumption 36U / 9kW 8U / 3.2KW 8U / 4kW Roadmap 2 more generations of Itanium, the first of which is 3 years late to market. There is a commitment to 2 more generations of IBM POWER and they have a detailed roadmap available here. See the below image to see the focus on x64 roadmap! Scalability (single-system) 128-cores, 4TB RAM, 240k SAPS 256-cores, 8TB RAM, 700k SAPS 80-cores, 3TB RAM, 120k SAP
What will be the death knoll?
This is interesting because 95% of Itanium systems were shipped by HP in 2008, according to Gartner. 90% of those that run Itanium for SAP run the HP-UX OS. I’d love to see the stats but from my SAP statistics vs the overall systems sold, I estimate that at least 30% of those are used to run SAP – I suspect this is the biggest single software vendor that runs Itanium.
And SAP hasn’t said so, but they will stop development on the Itanium platform. They have to because the only database that runs on that platform is Oracle 11g (or MSSQL on Windows 2008).
Disclosure: This is a republished post from John Appleby's original post.
Add to this SAP’s promotion program around its own Sybase ASE database and HP’s financial inability to prop up Itanium and perhaps you will agree that the Superdome will move from an endangered species to a dead duck.
