The NVIDIA keynote pointed out the value of fast storage and memory technology for the high performance applications that GPUs enable.
According to NetApp, NVIDIA and NetApp are working closely to bridge the gap between the CPU and GPU universes and to better address a wide range of machine learning, deep learning, training, and inference needs. The company’s ONTAP AI system are said to together the advantages of NVIDIA GPUs and NetApp’s data pipeline expertise.
At the NetApp booth this year, NetApp featuring an ONTAP AI solution combining three of the latest NVIDIA® DGX-2™systems with NetApp® AFF A800 cloud-connected flash storage. The DGX-2 offers 10x the power of NVIDIA’s first-generation DGX system.
NetApp featured the Cisco FlexPod® Datacenter for AI and other workload solution optimizes converged infrastructure. It included Cisco UCS blade and rack servers, Cisco Nexus® 9000 Series switches, Cisco UCS 6000 Series Fabric Interconnects, and NetApp® AFF A800 flash storage arrays.
NetApp also demonstrated its DGX-2 ONTAP AI system in a modular, DDC liquid-to-air cooled cabinet from ScaleMatrix. This cabinet combines the efficiency of water with the flexibility of air, cooling up to 52kW of power load in a single 45U cabinet. These cabinets can be deployed in nearly any environment, and provide clean-room quality environmental control, guaranteed air flow, and integrated security and fire suppression.Photo by Tom Coughlin
Pure Storage was showing its AIRI, AI ready infrastructure, using NVIDIA DGX servers, Arista networking and Pure Storage Flashblades that was originally introduced in 2018. These products support 2-4 PFlops performance with NAND flash capacity from 119 to 374 TB. The 2019 products are two multi-chassis systems with multiple AIRIs daisy chained to create a single larger logical unit. One version of these multi-chassis systems uses up to 9 NVIDIA DGX-a systems for 9 PFlops performance and the other uses 3 NVIDIA GDX-2 systems for 6 PFlops performance. These new systems can be sscaled to 64 rackes with a leaf-spine network.
Pure also announced an AI-focused version of Flashstack, which uses Cisco servers and Nexus data center switches. The AI version using the Cisco UCS C480 M5 ML AI servers and contains up to 8 NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPUs. These are connected using NVLink to make the 3 processors work like a single massive GPU. A week before the GTC NVIDIA announced that it was going to acquire Mellanox by the end of 2019. Mellanox was also showing its ConnectX-6 200 Gb/s HDR Infiniband and 200G Ethernet PCIe Gen 4X16/Gen3 X32 adapter as well as its Quantum 40-port HDR 200 Gb/s Infiniband Smart Switch. Dolphin Interconnect Solutions was also showing PCIe Fabric switch solutions at the GTC.
DDN was showing high-performance storage solutions for AI and deep learning, benchmarks, customer use cases and an interactive automated retail demo. The company was showing their next generation of A³I reference architectures, which include NVIDIA’s DGX POD™, DGX-2™, and DDN’s AI400™ parallel storage appliance. A featured use case was improved testing results from the Max Delbrück Center (MDC) for Molecular Medicine in conjunction with Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB. Using an A³I architecture with an NVIDIA DGX-1 system and an AI200™ from DDN, MDC was able to improve accuracy and precision within analyzed images while simultaneously accelerating training performance by 240 percent. More recent testing with an A³I architecture comprised of NVIDIA’s DGX-2 system and DDN’s AI400 revealed results that more than doubled previous improvements. GTC showcases the latest advances in AI technology and digital storage and memory play an important role in machine learning and other big data application. Flash memory and other solid state storage technologies, expecially using NVMe, are key elements for future AI applications.
We promised to talk about some fancy things you can do with a SAN; things that otherwise would be impossible. These include global file systems and the ability to move storage between servers with virtually no downtime. In fact, the whole way you think about storage, and its hassles, can be thrown out the window.
The benefits of a storage network are seemingly endless. Your storage suddenly becomes fault-tolerant because you can lose a fibre channel switch, a disk array controller or a host HBA and everything should continue working. With the right selection of products, a company can also employ less people to manage storage thanks to the wonderful tools available for dealing with configuration tasks. Data security and storage utilization are also increased with a careful SAN deployment.
These days it isn't hard to sell the technology to the business leaders, and hopefully the storage administrators are sold as well. Less employee overhead is attractive to both administrators and managers, but the real benefit for the administrators, aside from reliability and all that important stuff, is the neat things you can do with a SAN.Storage: Here, There, Everywhere
Perhaps the most exciting prospect of moving to a SAN environment is the introduction of easy storage migration. In an old, direct attached storage environment (DAS), if some storage needed to move to a new server, this would involve a lengthy process. We'd first unmount the file systems using the storage, then physically unplug the unit, move it, connect it to a new host, and bring up the file systems on the new machine. What a hassle! In fact, it was probably more common to need to allocate more storage to just a few LUNs. If the disk array was already full, you'd have no choice but to copy the file systems to a new array.
In a SAN environment, let's take a look at the same process for both scenarios. The first, needing to move "some storage" from one host to another, involves only three steps, none of which include leaving your chair. If we want to move and entire array from one host to another, all we need to do is unmount file systems, reconfigure the SAN to let the other host see the storage, and then quickly bring it up on the new server. This task can be done in a less than a minute if you're good, but in a DAS world, 15 minutes would be record-breaking.
With DAS environments, it was necessary to reallocate storage by moving the entire array to a new host. If you needed fast RAID storage on a server, it was necessary to connect a new array. Even if the application couldn't actually use all of the storage, it would still get connected to the host that needed some storage. In the SAN world, we can make much better use of our storage.
The second scenario mentioned above is most common. We generally need to grow the size of just a few file systems, rather than replace an entire array. If you have already allocated all LUNs on your DAS unit, you're stuck moving data off the array. In a SAN environment, we simply need to allocate a new LUN to a host.
Generally, we'll have a disk array with two controllers and around 15 FC disk drives. Extra "trays" can be stacked onto and managed by the controller array. If storage starts getting tight, simply add another tray. Amazingly, most arrays also support the ability to grow LUNs, so that taking advantage of added disks doesn't always involve creating new LUNs. You must run a file system that supports this, however.
Even if you do need to add storage from another array to your server, there are still no wires to touch. As long as everything is SAN-attached, you can easily allocate LUNs from multiple arrays to one server. As mentioned, it's a completely different mindset from the DAS days.
Without all the hand-waving, we should talk a bit about moving LUNs and adding storage to existing file systems. You really must run some type of volume management software. VxFS from Veritas, ZFS from Sun, or even one of the various Linux-native solutions will work. When we talk about adding a LUN to a file system, what we're really talking about is software-level RAID; generally a RAID 0 stripe. We need some way of stitching together multiple LUNs at the host-level to create file systems. To add more space to the file system, we simply attach a new LUN. This is trivial in VxFS and ZFS.
Now what if we need to move a live file system from one host to another? Again, we ideally want file system help, but this isn't mandatory. The idea is to "export" the file system from one host, reconfigure the SAN (storage array to allow a new host to see the LUN and zoning on the switch, if necessary), and then import the file system on the new server. This is trivial with ZFS and Veritas, but a very manual process if you're using a standard file system.Clustering
SAN file systems are file systems that can be utilized by more than one server at once. Try this with a standard file system, and in short order, your data will be corrupt. The file system must have the ability to coordinate changes with all others that wish to modify the file system at the same time.
Clustered file systems are extremely useful, especially for highly available file servers or databases. Without a SAN environment, using these SAN file systems is almost impossible. To be fair, there have been a few SCSI DAS arrays that included two ports and allowed two hosts access at the same time, but those were rare and expensive.
There are few options, but the file systems are maturing quite rapidly. They are:
Expect to see the open source clustered file systems improve in the future. With the widespread adoption of storage networks and higher demands on services, the need for clustered file systems will continue increasing.
We can certainly see that a SAN environment provides for more manageable storage allocations. No more late nights copying data, no more plugging cables to move arrays between hosts, and no more single points of failure. What's not to love?In a Nutshell
Mellanox Technologies has become a leading provider of networking hardware, particularly at the high performance end of the market where the company accounts for more than 70 percent of Ethernet ports shipped with speeds above 10 Gb/sec according to Crehan Research.
It’s a comment on the success of Mellanox and on the growth of high-end networking that Intel is now reported to be interested in buying Mellanox, to bolster its data-center portfolio. But why?
At the performance level of 10 Gb/sec and above with Ethernet, the processing overhead required to serve the network interface starts to become an issue – a fact exacerbated by the increasing complexity of modern-day data center networks which now may include support for performance acceleration techniques, virtualization, and overlay networks. One answer has become to offload some of the processing to the network interface controller (NIC), an area Mellanox has devoted a great deal of development in recent years.
Offloading functions is not a totally new idea, but it has taken on a new dimension as data-center operators, led by the big cloud service providers, have embraced software-defined networking (SDN) to make the job of changing and managing their networks easier and less expensive.
SDN, in particular, has demanded the NIC become smarter so that it can be reconfigured to support new functions or protocols – as and when necessary. This has led to the emergence of an array of devices termed SmartNICs.
It’s clear that a SmartNIC must offer more network processing features and intelligence than a standard, basic NIC. But the whole arena of NICs with offload hardware has yet to be precisely defined, meaning there’s no commonly accepted definitions for what capabilities must be supported in order for a device to be marketed as a “SmartNIC.”
If we look at Mellanox and how it categorizes this field, we can see features such as 25 Gb/sec and 50 Gb/sec Ethernet support, stateless TCP/IP acceleration and SR-IOV are now regarded as a basic capability that any NIC in a modern data center ought now to support as standard. Mellanox regards such NICs as foundational devices, something that lack any real ability to offload packet steering or traffic flows from the host processor.
The step up from here is devices that employ a programmable data plane, thereby allowing the packet switching rules and data-processing protocols they accelerate in hardware to be updated or changed as required rather than be set in stone – as in legacy networking hardware. They should also be able to accelerate a range of functions common in cloud data centers – such as ensuring quality of service levels, and flow reporting and monitoring. Mellanox calls these Intelligent NICs.
The most capable NICs are those used to offload a whole slew of functions from the host processor. These include control-plane functions, such as those found in a virtual switch, and network function virtualization (NFV) in addition to the data-plane functions and capabilities mentioned earlier. The key is to deliver both high performance and flexible data processing capabilities. These devices are universally regarded as SmartNICs.
Here, it’s worth looking at how acceleration of network functions has actually been implemented in the equipment defined as Intelligent NICs or SmartNICs. For the most part, they fall into one of three categories: those based on application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), those that feature a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), and those built with a system-on-chip (SoC) that combines one or more CPUs with the standard NIC functions.
Which of these is superior for those looking to employ hardware offload? Each has pros and cons, meaning the act of choosing can be a trade-off between considerations like cost, ease of implementation and flexibility. In other words, there’s no simple “right” answer to which is “best” as it all depends on the specific requirements of the implementation.
ASICs are a tried and tested means of accelerating specific functions and typically deliver a high level of performance at relatively low additional cost. They have, however, relatively limited flexibility, being based largely on functions built into the silicon during manufacturing. Mellanox designs its adapter ASICS with a programmable data plane so the packet switching rules and routes can be accelerated in hardware and updated on-demand, but the networking control plane must still run on the server’s CPU or on a separate network controller appliance.
Another approach has been to use FPGAs, which offer good performance and their logic blocks can be reconfigured to support new functions after being deployed. The challenge here is that FGPAs are not necessarily the easiest things to program, with the process essentially coming down to defining logic circuits and chip gates to be burned into the FPGA– which can be a relatively costly and time-consuming process every time a change is needed. In addition, FPGAs are expensive as compared to dedicated ASIC logic which can perform the same tasks.
The SoC approach offers the greatest flexibility since they integrate both an already intelligent NIC with industry standard programmable processor cores and run standard operating systems and application infrastructure programs. CPU cores can easily be reprogrammed with additional features as often as required and can be used to perform any combination of network processing tasks. This means SoCs can offload most of the network processing from the host server and thus allow it to dedicate more of its CPU cycles to running applications and services, which is where the cloud providers make their money, after all.
Some of these SOCs – such as the Mellanox BlueField – include both ASIC-based packet switching for the fastest networking performance and CPU cores that are easily programmed to add new networking features and/or run the networking control plane. This also allows the SmartNIC to run the policy engine which provides better control and isolation from potentially malicious apps running on the main CPU.
For this reason, it seems reasonable to draw a distinction and say that the only true SmartNICs are those that combine intelligent NIC offloads with use standard onboard CPU cores to accelerate network functions. This is not to say that such SmartNICs are going to totally replace the other technologies – for example, ASICs are highly efficient at handling network offloads, it’s just ASICs are not quite as flexible. The term SmartNIC, however, is also increasingly being viewed as applying specifically to the most flexible and capable accelerators, which means those with integrated CPU cores.
Another distinction: a SmartNIC can be easily programmed using a standard language such as C, in order that it can be quickly updated to take on new functions. Such new functions include the ability to handle virtual network overlay protocols like VXLAN or NVGRE, virtualizing networked storage resources so they appear to be local to the host processor, or operating security functions such as an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) at the level of the NIC. It might even include storage-related features such as compression, deduplication, RAID, or storage virtualization.
SmartNICs grew out of the needs of the massive data centers of hyperscale web companies and cloud operators, as they shifted from delivering network functions using purpose-built hardware to features in software running on multiple server nodes that are easier to scale and manage. Where the hyperscalers lead, enterprises are likely to follow and design more private, public, and hybrid-cloud datacenters.
Definitions are still loose, but the key takeaway should be this: that there exists a spectrum of network offload capabilities that span standard NICs, Intelligent NICs that can accelerate data-plane tasks, and programmable SmartNICs that can offload a wide range of tasks such as data-plane and control-plane functions.
Each has its own use cases – you just need to identify yours.
