In Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1, Microsoft has released a combination of operating system updates that we find very compelling. Microsoft has joined much of the rest of the industry in annual release roll-ups with feature additions, and this time, they listened to the critics. More interesting are the one-upmanship features targeted directly at its virtualization and cloud competition. Some were stunning, despite a few strange and perhaps anecdotal basic problems that we found.
Windows 8.1 is the answer to loud and vociferous complaints regarding radical changes to the user interface found in Windows 8, and is currently a free upgrade for 8.0 users. What's apparent in 8.1 is that Microsoft is committing strong changes to the tablet and touch user interface in its Surface devices first, in order to compete with Apple and Android. If 8.0 didn't convince you, then 8.1 is a shot across the bows of those believing that desktops and notebooks rule IT.
[ALSO: The hidden fangs of Windows 8.1]
[LOVEFEST: 10 things we love about Windows Server 2012]
Microsoft has targeted Windows 2012 R2 directly at data center and service provider use, along with baseline connectivity to Azure Cloud services and third party Azure services providers. Microsoft's other targets are Oracle and VMware.
Microsoft offers a free add-in for Windows 2012 R2 of its Azure Pack to connect cloudlike constructs, and anchors it with various free and paid appliance services that battle competing IaaS/SaaS providers and other MSP/cloud competitors. Through gritted teeth, Microsoft is also supporting specific instances of commonly used Linux distros as manageable guests within the Hyper-V and Azure infrastructure.
By contrast to the heavy work done in 2012 R2, Windows 8.1 is a far lighter weight set of changes, and largely addresses criticisms of Windows 8.0.
Authentication and access enabling technologies are important in a BYOD universe. Many Windows users find Apple's iTunes to be difficult to use as an authentication system under Windows, with frequent unthreaded new releases. Microsoft has responded with a unified identity method enhancement of its Windows Intune ecosystem and Active Directory-poised authentication methods. The Good News
What we liked about Windows 2012 R2 is that it's generally easier to use than Windows 2012 -- fewer sharp edges -- and 2012 R2 contains stronger networking, storage, and hypervisor skills, we found in testing. Microsoft has also made it almost fiendishly consistent and easy to join Windows 2012 R2 to Azure Clouds -- and it's practical if organizations have fast Internet pipes.
Both new Windows releases are highly targeting enterprise customers, although a Windows 2012 R2 Server Essentials Edition (traditionally limited to 25 or fewer users) is available, and not reviewed here. The Essentials Edition must live within three total VMs, which limits possible users, unless something unforeseen and magical happens in hardware.
If organizations want a control plane, Microsoft attaches System Center 2012 R2 releases of Ops Manager, Virtual Machine Manager, and Configuration Manager that are deeply intertwined into the depths of Server 2012 R2 and Hyper-V.
During briefings with Microsoft, we had to constantly disambiguate what was a Server or Azure or System Center feature as Microsoft blends them together. In doing so, Microsoft wants its value proposition to be considered as a mixture of the three, but this review focuses on only the Server, Windows 8.1, and the free connection to Azure Pack.
For its part, Windows 8.1 solves the silliness of bringing back the familiar Desktop, along with ways to access applications in ancient and hallowed ways. While the Windows Start menu is gone (available from third parties if desired), there's a method to show apps selections onscreen easily. Windows 8.1 is also faster than 8.0 — this additional speed makes the most impact when it comes to video drivers and the Server Message Block (SMB3) communications transport protocol.
SMB3 speed isn't proprietary to Windows as SAMBA 4.1 -- the open source SMB emulator that can be used by Mac OS, Linux, BSD, and other non-Windows operating systems, is now compatible with SMB3. However, SAN and NAS devices may not support SMB3 until vendors can get caught up.
Much attention in Windows 8.1 surrounds features that will be found in tablets, like Microsoft's own Surface Pro. Multi-touch object manipulation and attention towards touch and tethered keyboard combinations abounds. We tested 8.1 and found an enormous variety of keyboard manipulations and touch motions that produced interesting effects.
2012 R2 and Hyper-V
Windows 2012 R2 contains a number of storage options poised towards Hyper-V, but we found that R2 can probably be booted from a wristwatch and store data on our sneakers -- if we format them NTFS. We successfully booted local hardware (you may need BIOS updates), iSCSI, and virtual network storage. Many will be booting VMs, and Microsoft has made this especially simple under Hyper-V V3.
Hyper-V V3 has received much work, and Microsoft considers it a “Generation 2” hypervisor VM-hosting platform that delivers a higher degree of para-virtualization and cuts away much hardware layer specific driver emulation, although other OS versions/distros of hosted VMs can still find connection points.
Hyper-V V3 and its Windows 2012 VMs also boot UEFI, rather than traditional memory-location-specific BIOS. This gave us a few fits, but works. There is the capacity to move virtual machines from host to host using compression, and where compatible hardware is available to support it, very fast transports -- 10Gigabit Ethernet, Infiniband, and other faster-than-10G Ethernet connections. The high-speed connections are crucial to VM movements among hosts in hypervisor fabrics.
We tested Microsoft's virtual network switching component, and found it easy to manipulate, although we disconnected several remote hosts by making inept choices. The instructions weren't clear to us, and we were able to crater the communications of two of our test servers with ease. The drive to our network operations center is a long one.
The SDNs inside Hyper-V V3 are more easily manipulated by System Center 2012. Microsoft includes IP Address Management/IPAM in Hyper-V, and as VMware has found, is heaven-sent for those with genuine desires to form virtualization platforms where VMs can be easily transported from host to host for either performance or isolation within a defined fabric/VM farm.
Hyper-V V3 resources can be aggregated into clusters, and through the use of new VHDX sharable disk stores, can create islands internally -- or for cloud-hosted purposes, external clouds whose resources should be opaque to other cloud components. We were not able to successfully find constructs to test the opaque nature of what should be isolated clouds, but rudimentary tests seemed to prove isolation. The VHDX format can also be dynamically re-sized as the need arises; we found that the process is fast, although during that period, disk and CPU resources can peak until the modification is over. Heavy CPU/disk-imposed limitations thwart resizing by slowing it.
We also tested Hyper-V and 2012R2 IPAM and Microsoft's SDN successfully under IPv4 (other limitations prevented heavy IPv6 testing). Software defined networks (SDN) cross a turf that is divided in many organizations: virtualization and network management teams. Network management staff have traditionally used IPS, routing, switching and infrastructure controls to balance traffic, hosts, even NOC hardware placement. SDN use means that what were once separate disciplines are now forced to work together to make things work inside the host server's hypervisor, where the demarcation was once where the RJ-45 connector meets the server chassis.
IPAM allowed us to define a base allocation of routeable and/or non-routeable addresses, then allocate them to VMs hosted on Hyper-V hosts or other hosts/VMs/devices on our test network. We could in turn, allocate virtual switches, public private or internal, connected with static/blocked and sticky DHCP. Inter-fabric VM movements still require a bit of homework, we found. Using one IPAM is recommended.
[ALSO: Windows 8.1 cheat sheet]
What we like is that the SDN primitives and IPAM can work well together, with well-implemented planning steps. We could create clouds easily, and keep track of address relationships. A Microsoft representative mused over the spreadsheets that carry IP relationship management information in many organizations, calling it crazy. We would agree, and believe that hypervisor or host-based IPAM is a great idea. If only DNS were mixed in more thoroughly -- and it's not -- we'd be complete converts to the concept. We found it very convenient nonetheless, although errors were more difficult to find when they occurred, such as address pool depletions. Uniting networking and virtualization/host management disciplines isn't going to be easy. The Bad News
We found head-scratchers and limitations. We found several initial foibles installing the operating system on bare metal to what should be generic hardware. We were able to overcome them, but warn installers that they'll need to consider that Windows 2012 and especially R2 might require updated server BIOS firmware to UEFI-compatible, as happened with our Lenovo ThinkServer and HP DL 380 Gen8 servers. When Windows 2012 R2 can't install (R2 or Hyper-V V3-R2), we received an inarticulate flash of an error message. We actually took a video of it to capture that there was a problem with ACPI -- and not UEFI. The turf between platform providers and OS/hypervisor makers is still real and strong, but Microsoft isn't alone, as we've incurred driver/platform mysticism with VMware and Oracle, too.
We found the Hyper-V role cannot be re-instantiated. This means that no hypervisor on top of a hypervisor. Microsoft claims that there has been no customer demand for this, but it also imposes a limitation. Although running a hypervisor atop a hypervisor seems silly, there are cases where it's useful. One role often cited is in production test labs, and another where Microsoft's SDN is used -- Hyper-V V3 must always be the base layer talking to the metal and silicon of a server, precluding other schemes direct access to the metal and therefore impeding other SDN schemes.
The Azure Pack uses the same Hyper-V infrastructure as Windows Server 2012 R2. Microsoft offers a sample of what other third party providers may offer in the form of services and ready-to-deploy pre-built appliances. We were reminded of what TurnKeyLinux started several years ago, in terms of usable appliances built from Linux substrates. There isn't a huge variety of appliance samples available, but what we tested, worked -- full WordPress websites that were ready for skins and customizations.
A Service Bus, actually message bus, connects components in the clouds serviced by the Azure Pack and Hyper-V. The Service Bus connects Microsoft-specific API sets, after a framework “namespace” is created. Communications can be subscribed and published to the framework and its members in the namespace talk via REST, Advanced Message Queueing Protocol/AMQP, and Windows instrumentation APIs. The Service Bus reminds us of products like Puppet, Chef, and others in the Linux world, communicating in a stack-like framework for rapid deployment and ease of VM and infrastructure fleet management.Windows 8.1
Where Windows 8.1 is upgraded on Windows 7 or Windows 8 platforms, the upgrade was fast and made no mistakes. Windows XP can be run atop Hyper-V or in a Type 2 hypervisor application, but we didn't test this, as we've retired Windows XP completely and we hope that readers have, too. Like Windows 8.0, 8.1 can use the latest version of Hyper-V V3 as a foundation, so that other OS versions can be used on the same host hardware, with resource limitations to guests or 8.1, SDN, IPAM, and other Hyper-V features.
The Windows 8.1 UI is initially identical to Windows 8.0, but with the addition of a desktop icon that can be touched/chosen to be optionally or subsequently a resident resource more familiar to XP and Windows 7 users. We found it's also possible to boot directly to an Apps screen that allows apps to be easily chosen, although not with the same vendor topical drop-boxes that Win XP and Windows 7 might be used to. If there are many applications, the screen must be scrolled. Windows XP/7 users who have accumulated many dozens of applications might be scrolling frequently as long lists of applications can fill many screens.
We found more UI customization choices, and discovered we could make very busy combinations of Live Tiles. It's possible to insert RSS feeds into tiles where supported, allowing what we feel is an addicting amount of information available within just a handful of tiles, and the appeal of moving tiles combinations on tablets to suit differing use situations. Apps that use “traditional” windows are easier to manage, and users can now move multiple windows adjacent to each other (especially handy on multiple monitors) without having snap behavior crater their placement choices, as occurred in 8.0 and even Windows 7 editions.
SMBs and remote offices looking for their first rack server should check out Dell’s PowerEdge R330 as it has a lot to offer. Succeeding the venerable twelfth-generation R320, it supports the latest ‘Skylake’ Xeon E3-1200 v5 processors and DDR4 memory plus it has improved storage options and performance.
It’s not exorbitantly priced either, with prices starting at only £830 ex VAT. This’ll get most small businesses out of the starting blocks as it includes a decent quad-core 3GHz Xeon E3-1220 v5 CPU and 4GB of 1.2V DDR4 memory.
Memory capacity is significantly less than the R320 which has six DIMM slots and supports up to 192GB of DDR3. However, for the majority of SMBs, we think the maximum 64GB of faster DDR4 in the R330 will still be enough to handle even their most demanding apps.
Both the R320 and R330 can be ordered with four LFF or eight SFF hot-plug drive bays, but the R330 has a trick up its sleeve as you can sneak a couple of 1.8in SATA SSDs into its optical drive bay and use them as fast-booting mirrored OS drives. It’s a little surprising that Dell didn’t opt for M.2 or mSATA space-saving SSDs though, as 1.8in SATA SSDs are an increasingly rare breed.Storage decisions
Cold-swap four-bay systems start with the drive backplane cabled to the motherboard’s embedded four-port SATA connector and PERC S130 controller. The dual 1.8in SATA SSD boot option is only available on this chassis though, as you would be expected to use two of the normal SFF bays for this purpose in the eight-drive model.
The S130 supports software-managed mirrors, stripes and RAID5 arrays for SATA drives only. Our review system was supplied with Dell’s optional PERC H330 controller card which fits in a dedicated slot and brings 12Gbits/sec SAS and hot-swap support.
The H330 has dual, 4-port mini-SAS connectors and can be used in both the 4- and 8-bay versions of the chassis. It adds support for RAID10 and 50 spanned arrays. Plus, it can be viewed and managed directly from Dell’s iDRAC8 remote management console - another useful feature.
If you have a fancy for dual-redundant RAID6 arrays, then you’ll need Dell’s PERC H730 controller. It uses the same dedicated slot as the H330 and also has 1GB of onboard DDR3 cache memory.Expansion, noise and power
The R330 slotted easily into our lab’s 1000mm server rack cabinet but, at only 24in deep, it’ll fit neatly into 800mm data cabinets as well. The server comes as standard with Dell’s handy LCD panel which changes colour from blue to orange in the event of an error to provide at-a-glance server status.
Good internal design makes it easy to maintain and upgrade the server. There’s room for two PCI-Express slots, but you’ll need to add the butterfly riser card when ordering as this isn’t included as standard.
Cooling is handled by a bank of three cold-swap fans in front of the CPU and memory sockets. On 4-bay models with the expansion riser card and 8-bay models, an extra fan module needs to be installed in the spare bracket to the left.
We found noise levels to be slightly higher than HP’s ultra-compact ProLiant DL20 Gen9. With our iPad placed one metre in front of the servers, the SPLnFFT iOS app recorded 41dB for the DL20 and 53dB for the R330.
The server comes with a single 350W hot-plug power supply and there’s room next door for a second redundant PSU. Power consumption isn’t a worry as our review system was measured drawing 48W in idle and peaking at only 75W with the CPU under extreme load.
An iDRAC8 Express license provides remote server power control, monitoring and historical graphsRemote management
Management tools are in abundance with Dell’s iDRAC8 providing a tidy web interface with a wealth of status information about critical hardware along with power monitoring and access to the PERC H330 RAID controller. The latter shares access with the first Gigabit Ethernet port, but Dell offers a snap-in upgrade card with a dedicated management port. You will need to upgrade form the included iDRAC Express 8 licence to the iDRAC8 Enterprise license if you want full server and OS remote control.
Dell’s iDRAC8 provides direct access to the server’s PERC RAID controller
Dell’s OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) provides local web-based management while the free OpenManage Essentials (OME) delivers centralised management for all SNMP and WMI enabled systems. It runs regular network discoveries and provides a dashboard showing the status of all systems along with extensive alerting and graphical reporting facilities.
Dell’s OpenManage Essentials provides network-wide system monitoring and fault alerting features
Mobile users will like Dell’s OpenManage Mobile (OMM) app as it can link up with the iDRAC8 controller. We tested the iOS version on our iPad and found its hardware health status displays and alert notification really useful.
Even better, the OMM app can talk to the server running OME so we could keep a close eye on all our monitored network systems. The app opens with an overview providing coloured icons for swift status views and we could drill down and check alerts, system logs and hardware details.
Dell’s OMM iOS app links up with OME and provides mobile users with remote network and system monitoringConclusions
The PowerEdge R330 is ideally suited to space-constrained SMBs looking for a powerful first server or to upgrade existing systems to cope with their expanding business apps. The myriad storage options can be confusing but there’s no doubting this compact rack server’s flexibility and it can’t be faulted for features and performance making it good value.

Q: Will the software provided by the DBC team be Linux only or will there be support for Windows. If Linux, will the distro be Ubuntu 16.04?
A: If your machine belongs to a mining machine as a server, we only support Ubuntu Linux (version is 16.04). If your machine belongs to a client, we also support Windows and Mac.
Q: If Linux, are test-net compute node operators required to install any specific libraries and hardware drivers or will this be shipped as a pre-packaged solution for quick deployment?
A: DeepBrain chain will deliver all of the related programs, including libraries and scripts. You don’t need to install additional libraries. You simply need to follow a “step-by-step” guideline from the “installation guide and user manual”.
Q: If there is no Windows support, are node operators who face challenges with specific hardware drivers able to fully allocate the necessary resources (CPU, RAM, Storage) to a virtual image? I’ve had personal success with this model in the past and have found it to be more flexible with less compatibility issues than some specific Linux distros.
A: Yes, we will also deploy different container images for different AI training environment. It will be more flexible.
Hardware Efficiency Settings:
Q: Will the AI Training be memory intensive? This question was asked, as the user would prefer to underclock RAM to maximize efficiency, produce less heat, and consume less electricity, as well as ensure less stress on hardware.
A: Yes, we have higher GPU, disk, and memory requirement for AI training. Please confirm if you could meet it or not. If you don’t have larger memory, but your memory is more than 4GB, you could become one of our Storage Nodes. Neural networks memory depends on architecture, as some are chatty and tends to leave the GPU such as many RNNS. Most energy is exerted when computation leaves the GPU. That is why the global CPU memory should always need more than twice the aggregate of the total GPUs in the system to mainta5 the performance. Undercoating will not help training, and may hinder training performance.
Q: We understand that the DBC AIMs leverage DDR4 RAM. Is DDR4 a minimum or can DDR3 be used in our systems for test-net and/or main-net, if different? Is there a specific speed (mhz) that is advised?
A: We suggest that you use DDR4, because DDR3 will be too slow. DBC has a higher requirement for speed, network, and hardware configuration. DDR4 is our reference architecture.
Q: What is the RAM requirement for 2 GPU, 4 GPU, and 8 GPU compute nodes? Is it 2x the amount of GPU memory on the system?
A: This is good question. You really hit the point. Yes, if you have 2GPU, 4GPU, 8GPU respectively, GPU memory should be larger. If you have larger memory, GPU computer power speed will be faster. Although we list minimum RAM requirement is 64G, we also welcome larger RAM configurations. We will list recommend DBC super node configurations as follows:
Q: How is storage used during typical workloads? Is it sequential or random access load? Do we happen to know if it’s more read or write intensive?
A: We will use more sequential load for read/write as storage nodes.
Follow-up question: This question was also intended for the AI compute nodes. In order to select a storage that doesn’t create performance bottlenecks, the type of IO pattern must be known. One possible answer would be that this will be investigated during the test period.
A: Sequential access load is applicable to AI compute nodes too. This is mainly for the uploading, downloading, read and write of documents.
Q: It is normal for AI compute systems to have high bandwidth interconnects between GPUs. Unfortunately, this will generally not be possible for prosumer hardware. That said, will the workloads perform better with fast communication between GPUs? i.e. Will 2 GPUs in one computer perform better than 2 GPUs mounted in 2 separate computers?
A: Yes, the performance of 2 GPUs in one computer will be better in 2 separate computers.
Prioritized Mining Reward on Mainnet:
Q: Following the release of testnet software, is there a specific amount of time (days/hours) in which testnet compute node operators must be operational in order to participate in testnet and receive priority on the mainnet?
Q: If I join Skynet as a 2 GPU compute node on a qualified system (meeting technical specs) and am given priority for main net ‘mining’, can I upgrade this system to 8 GPU after testing is complete and receive the same mining priority on the upgraded system?
Q: Although not expected, will there be any type of compensation outside of mining priority on main net for qualified test net node operators? This could include anything from DBC points, DBC, electrical cost compensation, DBC bumper stickers :), etc?
Q: Will the mining reward of DIY compute node operators be based on the quantity of GPU’s running on a supported system or is it based on the efficiency of the system, using an algorithm or modeling monitor? (If based on an algorithm for system efficiency, we can expect that higher-end components may result in better ROI)
A: We will monitor the system efficiency and make assessments.
Q: To what servers or infrastructure will Skynet nodes communicate with for testnet purposes? Will this be a specific region, cloud platform, etc?
Q: Given next-gen hardware releases in the coming month(s), are we able to add a second, third or more compute nodes to Skynet before a specified timeline, if not the start date itself? Examples of important new hardware available soon but not now:
A: There will always be new hardware and we and due to limited resources or timing in the case of 1180 we may or may not get to all the ones to validate against our net upon release. We will announce the components in our support list. The CPU will not factor into the net as the bulk of computation is dependent on the GPU, though CPU is important data pre- processing component.
For investors, you may want to consider ROI. As new NVidia GPUs promise better computing performance, the extra cost might not be fully compensated.
Q: Will Skynet participants be provided some type of standardized benchmark software and workloads that we’re able to use, at will. independent tuning will be necessary at some point. If provided at the early stages of testnet, compute node operators will have the ability to make configurations and/or upgrade hardware to better support the needs of Skynet. Otherwise, the necessary level of communication back and forth between the DBC team and Skynet participants will likely be very high.
A: You can refer to our DBC AIM’s configurations for reference. The only thing you need to make sure before joining our network is to have Ubuntu 16.04 ready. All the rest can be configured with our scripts. We will also release a user manual.
Q: Will there be instrumentation included in the deployed software that monitors various helpful statistics, such as throughput, timing, data volumes, etc? These statistics are obviously critical so as to benchmark various configurations, which can then be referenced prior to mainnet, providing more information to interested parties in the blockchain space and ensure a more inclusive and competitive future for DBC in a shorter period of time.
A： We will provide a “installation guide” to tell you how to monitor your machine’s status, including, amongst others: CPU, Memory, GPU and disc.
Q: What is going to be the most utilized floating point precision for the DeepBrain Chain project? If FP16 or FP64 is going to be norm, would it make more sense to construct Titan V’s for each node instead of a GeForce 1080 Ti grade setup? I figured with FP16 (half percision) providing such gains with memory savings, that this may prove beneficial for this type of offering? With GTX 1080 Ti cards (GP102 chip) NVIDIA has limited the throughput rates for FP16 by 1/64 and 1/32 for FP64.
A: The GPU will support FP16 or FP32 (FP64 is not generally used for DL). Not all computation for DL training works effectively with FP16, in some portions of computation, FP32 is mandatory to support the level of accuracy. So, thus, Mixed Precision is a powerful tool for training. It’s supported in our platform, and integrated with CUDA 8 or later. 1080TI supports HP to DP.
Q: Will floating point precision be dependent purely on the size or type of the data set? Or is this purely in the hands of the developers and the Docker templates being served/offered?
A: The floats are defined by the developers.
Q: Would a node with two to four Titan V’s be plausible? Since CUDA doesn’t support more than one Titan V in SLI or NVLINK, there isn’t going to be a benefit to a singular Docker instance running. As I am understanding it, the system would only run ONE container utilizing ONE Titan V at a time. Am I correct on this assessment?
A : TitanV will work, and our platform will have them work in aggregate. Using the libraries, the system will be topologically aware of the other TitanV/GPUs in the system, and try to implement them in conjunction of one another.
Q:Should I plan for an 40/100 Gbps environment now? I know the website stated 10 Gbps for equipment, but I could see a need for 40–100 Gbps edge equipment in the years to come.
A: Between nodes, We usually use 100Gbps to ensure enough bandwidth, in line with our proposed 128GPU environment. We will have efficient libraries to have them optimized for productivity.
Q: What are the key requirements for the SSD SAN or storage miner？
A: Capacity and read／write IOPS.
Q: Will a higher read/write IOPS and/or RAID 10 type setup have more beneficial gains for the projects overall success and mining output?
A: Read/write IOPS will be one factor.
Q: Is JBOD mostly used?
A: No. We don’t recommend JBOD.
Q: What filesystems do you prefer? I have always favored ZFS, but unsure for this offering specifically.
A: We recommend XFS、ext4 or ReiserFS. Q&A On Token Unlock And AI Cloud Computing Package Campaign What is AI Cloud Computing? DBC’s Cloud computing is a charge-per-use model, this allows usable, convenient and flexible network access according to individual’s needs, they can access the allocatable shared computing resource pool (resources including network, server, storage, applications and service). DeepBrain Chain’s AI cloud computing is distributed and connected via blockchain, offering customers usable, flexible and secure GPU computing resource. 5. Privacy Protection: Protecting the privacy of all participants in the ecosystem is a must, participants can freely decide how much information they want to be public. We will use encryption algorithm and separation mechanism to achieve this. 6. Flexible Supply: The demand of AI enterprises is not distributed equally throughout times, there might be a peak time where the demand is ten times higher than usual, this requires proper and efficient respond to sudden flux through flexible scaling technology to achieve automatic deployment from container, so that the content in a container can be quickly copied and deploy onto other idle containers during peak time. 7. Automatic Operation: When a certain node container is malfunctioning there will be notification and, the malfunctioning node will be removed automatically with a new node added to the network.
