all of the big movie studios primarily use Linux for animation and visible results. possibly no commercial Linux installation is larger than DreamWorks Animation, with more than 1,000 Linux computers and greater than 3,000 server CPUs.
“For Shrek three, we will eat close to 20 million CPU render hours for the making of the movie”, says DreamWorks Animation CTO Ed Leonard. “each of our movies continues to push the edge of what's feasible, requiring further and further compute vigor.” every person is aware of Moore's legislations predicts that compute vigor will double each one and a half years. a bit everyday corollary is that characteristic cartoon animation CPU render hours will double every three years. In 2001, the long-established Shrek film used about 5 million CPU render hours. In 2004, Shrek 2 used more than 10 million CPU render hours. And in 2007, Shrek three is using 20 million CPU render hours.
“At any given time, we are engaged on greater than a dozen films”, says Leonard. “each of those films has its own inventive ambition to push the boundaries of CG filmmaking.” DreamWorks Animation employs about 1,200 americans, with about two-thirds of their Glendale studio and the rest of their PDI studio in Redwood city linked by way of a 2Gb network. (notice that DreamWorks Animation, a publicly traded business led by Jeffrey Katzenberg, isn't Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks are living-action that merged with Paramount recently.)
“there were many specific technical advancements on the film, together with advancements in hair, clothing, costuming and crowds in addition to bringing the secondary persona animation [crowds] to a whole new level of efficiency”, says Leonard. About 350 americans are engaged on Shrek 3, with about 300 at PDI and 50 in Glendale.
long Flowing Hair and operating in lengthy attire
In Shrek three, Fiona transforms a bevy of basic “rescue me” fairy-story princesses into action figures to safeguard the kingdom of some distance far-off from usurper Prince Charming. the way to convert sleeping beauty's narcolepsy into a weapon or get neat-freak Snow White to soiled her nails fighting unhealthy guys seem like minor challenges compared to the technical limitations involved.
“DreamWorks Animation R&D gives the tools, libraries and software infrastructure for the creation of world-class CG films”, says Leonard. “We develop and aid a suite of software equipment for our films, together with a proprietary animation gadget, lighting, rendering and compositing equipment, and outcomes tools for things like hearth, water, apparel and crowds, to name just a number of.” Leonard estimates they have a few millions lines of custom code, usually written in C (legacy code) and C++ (more moderen code).
Andrew Pearce leads the DreamWorks Animation R&D neighborhood based mostly at PDI. “long hair may be the largest know-how advance in Shrek 3”, says Pearce. “In all of animation in the past you could have viewed lengthy hair very little.” “It took months to do the hero-hair flick on Shrek 2”, notes visible consequences Supervisor Philippe Gluckman. “Hair is all over in Shrek 3.” How hair glides throughout a shoulder looks effortless but is very complex to mannequin. “the manner the hair strikes had to turn into an awful lot greater computerized”, says Gluckman. There is never time for animators to place each and every hair by hand.
“With clothing we have more interactions, together with ripping of the cloth”, says Pearce. “quick action is always elaborate. in the precise world, there's best so quickly that you would be able to circulation, however no person has informed our animators that. if you went from 0 to 500 mph in a single 2nd, you'd likely leave some clothing at the back of within the precise world.” Animation fact is as lots paintings as physics.
figure 1. Our print copy of this image undoubtedly would not do justice to the remarkable detail within the hair of the characters. (image credit: all Shrek photographs listed here courtesy of DreamWorks Animation LLC.)
it's Getting Crowded in here
It is rarely just the challenge of animating some garb, it be how a whole lot apparel. “we have much more characters in the identical shot”, notes Shrek 3 Co-Director Raman Hui. “Shrek three has an immense forged with 48 characters”, says Shrek three Director Chris Miller. “we've massive crowd scenes with 40 to 50 characters on a stage and a pair of,500 within the viewers.” “The challenge in crowds is every personality needs to seem to be diverse”, says Pearce.
“If we had to do one setup for each personality, that would take too long”, says persona TD Supervisor Lucia Modesto. “We take a conventional persona and distort that persona. we've Man A, Man B and woman. The large edition you get in a crowd scene is the silhouette of hair and hat. For characters in Shrek, we had one accepted man with three variations, now it really is 16. women went from 5 to 25 adaptations and 13 hairstyles.” loads of work is achieved to make universal characters like Shrek appear greater, but with out searching distinct.
Let There Be world Illumination
“world illumination is anything lighters everywhere love”, says Pearce. “That bounces the gentle off all of the surfaces.” The problem is global illumination, often carried out as ray tracing, can also be costly. “it be mind-blowing for architecture fly-throughs where the lights is static and baked onto the building”, says Pearce. “Our problem is every little thing in Shrek 3 is moving.” The DreamWorks utility “bakes” (calculates forward of time) what's no longer moving and then tries to do the constituents that are relocating efficiently. “global illumination is in basically each scene in Shrek three”, says Pearce. “Scene complexity is what caps us now, equivalent to forests. Ray tracing there is not within your means.” Advances in Linux computing vigor and multicore chips and application are pushing render ability bigger and better.
“We use world illumination like a DP does”, says art branch construction dressmaker Guillaume Aretos. “We use start cards and colored soar playing cards. The moviemaking manner for us is very close to live motion the place we use the light that bounces. Shrek 2 changed into a south of Italy feel, variety of Beverly Hills grew to become into Italy.” Shrek 3 strikes far from the everlasting spring of first two films, with a extra Northern European seem to be. “it be very challenging to get an overcast effect with bouncing backlight”, says Aretos, “and vibrant mild shining through dark clouds.”
“i'm the top of design”, says Nick Walker, “which makes me the DP.” layout is the neighborhood that figures out the place the virtual actors will stand in digital units. “Shrek is seven feet tall and all torso”, says Walker. “Shrek may swallow Fiona's head when moving in for a kiss. Puss n' Boots and Donkey, the two sidekicks, are distinct sizes. it be complicated to get a two-shot.”

The Shrek 3 Linux Pipeline
The creation strikes from story and thought paintings into three-D modeling and finally render. DreamWorks Animation makes use of the general Linux Maya industrial package for three-D modeling. design positions the characters within the scenes and determines typical lighting. models are “rigged” with internal skeletons with the aid of the character TDs, then given to the scene animators. as a result of the complexity, Shrek three animators have been assigned in pairs to each of the a whole lot of scenes. during the past, it turned into one animator per scene. lights and any special effects are added, similar to material or flames. Then, the scene is rendered frame by way of body on a three,000+ CPU Linux renderfarm.

every body is assigned to a distinct node of the renderfarm via grid utility (the usage of Platform LSF, a industrial Linux kit), so that many frames may also be output simultaneously. The frames are edited into a film the use of Avid software (not on Linux). Early in the process, hand-drawn storyboard photos are scanned, and a scratch audio song is edited collectively making a rough video representation of the movie. As every sequence is achieved, it replaces the tough storyboard pictures, building the totally rendered film scene through scene.

“The incontrovertible fact that our leading creation pipeline is all on Linux is relatively entertaining”, says head of construction expertise Darin grant. “now we have been on Linux for years, however i am still amazed. searching lower back, when the usage of Linux changed into a thorough theory for Digital domain's renderfarm all over immense, it wasn't that lengthy until the business moved toward wholehearted adoption.” The studio Digital area, where provide formerly worked, constructed the primary Linux renderfarm for titanic (released in 1997). furnish now works at the PDI DreamWorks facility in northern California and commutes to Glendale each week to make certain that his go-website group is in sync. He additionally uses VSC, an immersive video teleconferencing system developed by DreamWorks Animation that HP has due to the fact taken to market as the Halo room. HAVEN is the DS3 45mbs Halo video change network, used appreciably to join between DreamWorks facilities and with HP's desktop division and with AMD.
determine 5. Animation: at this stage, the animators create the character's performance for the scene.
“The considerations with retaining a large Linux-based mostly pipeline are the same as retaining a big pipeline on any working gadget”, says furnish. “We unified the studio on one average pipeline a while in the past, and now we have all productions consistently the usage of the identical pipeline. They stress, push and improve the pipeline in different ways on each and every production. Linux offers us with many merits. solid guide for threading, NFS and LAMP toolsets are big pluses for us. Managing builders receives simpler each yr because the fine of the construction tools and IDEs available on Linux improves.”

“at the laptop, we use HP xw9300 workstations running RHEL 4”, says head of Digital Operations Derek Chan. “The renderfarm uses HP DL145 G2 servers. Our common for reminiscence is to have 2GB per core. Servers have 4 cores, so it's 8GB.” Chan says DreamWorks Animation has a superb relationship with crimson Hat, working intently to make sure that HP workstations work with crimson Hat Linux for DreamWorks.
figure 7. The massive Server Farm at DreamWorks Animation
“A problem we overcame on Shrek 3 turned into the mixing of metadata into our pipeline”, says supply. “In a cross-group effort between R&D and creation expertise, we put in area a equipment that continues old version assistance, render information and different in fact effective information in each and every and every file we produce. That we had been in a position to do this indicates one of the most key benefits of getting a proprietary toolset and file formats.” DreamWorks makes use of its own TIFF-like file layout based on sixteen-bit binary fixed aspect, a limited high Dynamic range (HDR) image layout with a colour latitude of 0 to 2.0. Letting photographs go whiter than white leaves headroom for picture alterations.
DreamWorks Animation technology is geared up into three core agencies: R&D to create new technology, production technology that oversees the construction pipeline and Digital Operations it is answerable for the compute, network and storage infrastructure. The construction pipeline has a whole lot of small equipment and applets that form the different glueware, which enables 200 people to work as an orchestrated crew. Most legacy pipeline code is written in Perl, and many of the more moderen code is being written in Python. “we would like to be all Python”, says Leonard, “however these days we nevertheless have loads of Perl”.
“Our crew has been spearheading the transition from Perl to Python at the facility”, says provide. “There are three primary factors for this. The creation of Python bindings to a C++ library is terribly easy and permits us to make the most of core R&D libraries within the leisure of the pipeline extra right away. the object-oriented nature of Python is awfully pleasing given our new asset model and may permit us to make adjustments to that asset mannequin an awful lot extra easily sooner or later. And, Python is a first-class citizen in many of the third-birthday party application applications that are utilized in our industry.”
on the Linux videos convention, an all-day convention for movement image technologists, last held in 2005 [that I chaired], the consensus of studio technologists was that the constraint on renderfarm measurement turned into heat. “The wall continues to be heat and vigor”, says Chan, “and a little little bit of floor area”. DreamWorks Animation is into dual-core and about to go quad-core. “in the subsequent eight months, we'll switch to eight computing cores per desktop”, says Chan. The studio is attracted to accelerated computing with GP-GPU. That has the competencies to circulate render tactics from in a single day to interactive. but, there are daunting technical boundaries in that GPU programming is so alien, and there are bandwidth limitations going between CPUs and GPUs on pictures cards. “There are massive efficiency positive factors available”, says Chan, “certainly if we might preserve it all on die with an AMD-built-in GPU”.
Shrek three consumes 24TB of storage, out of an allocation of 30TB. DreamWorks likes to preserve all its videos in near-line storage on big arrays of spinning disks. “americans seek advice from old motion pictures the entire time”, says Chan. “we now have the three Shrek movies. Madagascar is getting a sequel.” despite the fact every little thing is fairly a lot stored on line, DreamWorks archives to tape sent off-website for disaster recovery.
Why not extra Open-supply utility from the movie business?
Why don't the movie studios contribute some of their hundreds of thousands of lines of Linux code to open supply? Many studios have developed proprietary Linux video playback and modifying utility, an area where open supply is poor. could they supply that to open source? contemporary treacherous patent landscape is one obstacle, but beyond that is the can charge to retain it. for instance, ILM discovered it more work to open the OpenEXR image format than expected. The studios are busy making movies.
The film trade does every so often sponsor outside open-supply efforts, comparable to deep paint guide for GIMP in 1999. regrettably, 16-bit per channel paint become certainly not released as part of GIMP. It did later see the gentle of day as CinePaint [an OSS project I lead]. but as opposed to use CinePaint and must retrain Photoshop users, DreamWorks Animation, Disney and Pixar supplied some funding to CodeWeavers to make home windows Photoshop work on Linux under Wine in 2003.
The movie business may additionally not like free software that cuts too near its domain. The freeware renderer BMRT, developed through former employees of Pixar, was discontinued as a part of an infringement settlement in 2002 between Pixar and NVIDIA (which had bought a extra sophisticated edition of the BMRT render know-how from the enterprise Exluna to help Cg GPU rendering).
where Is DreamWorks Animation Taking Linux subsequent?
“CG filmmaking is without doubt one of the few places where there may be a decent bond between know-how and the artwork of filmmaking”, says Leonard. “technology is enabling artist vision like no other time within the history of our enterprise. We continue to invest heavily into rendering techniques reminiscent of international illumination to make lighting better and more straightforward. The original Shrek film didn't use any international illumination. Shrek 2 used it in a extremely restricted method, and Shrek three uses it largely across the film. The effect is stronger lighting fixtures to permit more desirable storytelling.”
“starting in 2009, we will be releasing all of our movies in native stereoscopic 3-D”, says Leonard. “Our films should be created, from the beginning, with three-D stereo in mind. The outcomes could be a whole new stage of event in theaters.” Monsters vs. Aliens (tentative title) and the way to educate Your Dragon could be the first three-D movies from the new 3-D pipeline. since Shrek three, the studio has constructed a new system for creating all storyboards digitally from inception in three-D.
DreamWorks Animation has more Linux geeks on tap than most Linux organizations or open-supply projects do. if you're drawn to working on Linux in the motion picture trade, DreamWorks is advertising job openings for Linux technologists, including systems Architect, Senior systems Administrator, Senior systems Developer, programs Engineer, Animation tools application Engineer, Core Libraries application Engineer and utility Engineer supervisor.
by using Gilbert’s estimates, failed conferences waste about $three.1 million each year.
listed below are probably the most key motives Gilbert says conferences fail:
“here's no joke — I even have actually viewed people’s careers come unglued and go down the tubes as a result of they'd too many slides!” Gilbert mentioned. “Executives want dialogue, no longer slide-pushed displays. If the presenter cannot speak off-slide, then I don’t think they know what they’re speaking about.”
For certain, there’s some thing to be mentioned for guidance and having some visual aids however Gilbert says you must approach a gathering like a jazz musician or a stand-up comic. Have a presentation competent but then be able to improvise — shifting and crossing out some of your customary agenda.

Dave Clarke, the founding father of AuthenticMatters, a digital strategy shop that helps businesses with person acquisition, said one in every of his largest pet peeves and chief culprits of assembly failure is over-invitation.
“When there are too many people in the meeting, it turns into basically physically unattainable for all and sundry to be an active participant. That on my own creates wasted time,” Clarke pointed out. “Yet over-invitation happens all the time in a canopy-your-personal-a** kind of manner. It’s like when somebody cc’s the entire group on an e-mail that’s handiest imperative to, say, three americans. There’s a line between ‘conserving everyone within the loop’ and overkill.”
hello, you in the lower back row on the iPhone — eyes up here, please!
Multi-tasking via checking e mail mid-assembly may additionally seem innocent — even admirable — to you, however definitely, Clarke said, it’s a further contributing aspect to meeting failure.
“in case you’re twiddling with your phone, you’re now not one hundred percent in the meeting,” he pointed out.
and you be aware of what happens next — you omit some thing that become mentioned, and the individuals paying attention should repeat themselves.
nice going, Slick.
Gilbert presents a few “nightmare” situations that you ought to be capable for, lest they derail your assembly:
The top-quality method to be certain your first rate assembly doesn’t go unhealthy is to hold your power up, be enthusiastic about what’s happening and energize the discussion, Gilbert talked about. And don’t just do your homework with regards to the presentation, do your homework on the individuals within the room.
And, one very critical lesson Gilbert discovered first-hand throughout a presentation he gave whereas working at Hewlett-Packard within the early Eighties: It’s no longer about you.
“i thought the meeting become all about me, and a big deal in [HP executive] Dick Anderson’s day. after all, i used to be a manager and what can be more essential than my exceptional practicing application? neatly, plenty, in fact,” Gilbert, then the manager of HP’s training classes, wrote in “speakme Up.”
[More From CNBC: Escape the Idiots! Top 25 Companies for Work-Life Balance]
And, don’t go in there anticipating to be lavished with praise on your brilliant presentation.
in the ebook, Gilbert quotes Felicia Marcus, an govt on the western director of the natural components protection Council and a former regional administrator at the EPA:
“if you are available in and appear irritated or are being a ‘suck-up’ hunting for a reassuring pat on the top for doing a fine job, then you definately are nevertheless understanding your childhood authority considerations. after we ought to deal with all of that it is simply a waste of time,” Marcus stated.
What? I’m telling mom!
like every decent comedian, remember to also recognize your audience. Jokes that work on the backside don’t all the time work at the suitable.
Did I ever let you know the one about the boss who turned into so clueless …
Whoops! Sorry, incorrect audience.
That being observed, bear in mind that executives are americans, too — and they want to chortle.
In Gilbert’s e-book, Dan Eilers, a associate at vanguard Ventures, an early-stage assignment-capital enterprise, recalls how former President Ronald Reagan kept his cool – and his experience of humor — even in the most attempting of cases.
“searching up from the gurney after being shot, he said to the ER healthcare professional, ‘neatly, Doc, I bound hope you’re a Republican.”

As computing ecosystems become more complex, monitoring and analyzing those often disconnected moving parts becomes increasingly challenging.
Today's data center has evolved from a single supplier producing and selling all-in-one offerings, such as the days when EMC, NetApp, HP or even Sun owned your data center and you chose a vendor and stuck with it. Those same vendors provided you with the required tools to monitor, analyze and troubleshoot their entire stack.
Shifting focus to the present, the landscape now appears to be quite different. Instead, you will find environments of mixed offerings provided by an assortment of vendors, both large and small. Proprietary machines work side by side with off-the-shelf commodity devices hosting software-defined software. Half of your applications may be hosted in virtual machines over a hypervisor or just spun up in a container. How does a modern data-center administrator or DevOps professional manage such an environment?
An assortment of platforms and frameworks exist that provide such capabilities, but they're not all one and the same. In some cases, those same tools will need to be coupled with others to produce something useful (for example, ELK: Elasticsearch + Logstash + Kibana). Unfortunately, this arrangement just adds to the complication and frustration when attempting to diagnose or discover problems in your computing environment.
Putting an end to this level of complexity, one company stands out among the rest: Scalyr. Scalyr develops and offers a complete suite of server monitoring, log management, visualization and analysis tools, which integrate with cloud services. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Scalyr CEO Steve Newman.
His is not a household name, like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, but you will be familiar with his work and contributions to cloud-enabled technologies. Although this is likely to change with Scalyr, Steve is best known for his work with Writely, a technology that later was acquired by Google and relabeled as Google Docs. In our conversation, Steve and I took the opportunity to discuss Scalyr, its solution and the problem it solves.
Steve Newman, Scalyr CEO
Petros Koutoupis: Tell me a bit about yourself. Who is Steve Newman?
Steve Newman: I am an engineer by both training and background and have spent most of my career in the startup environment. This is because I enjoy building things. I was at Google for a number of years following an acquisition, and while the experience itself was great, the startup bug in me drove me to Scalyr.
PK: So, now you founded a company called Scalyr. Please tell us, what is Scalyr?
SN: Scalyr is a log management platform for engineers responsible for software development. We collect logs from applications, services, containers and systems, and make that data available to help engineering teams track down problems and generally manage the complexity of modern development and operations.
PK: And why? What problem(s) does your product solve?
SN: Traditional log management tools are complex and often very slow at scale. This leads to a "gatekeeper" approach to log management, where only a select few acquire the expertise (and have the patience!) to access this critical data. Logs become a tool of last resort, hindering the team's ability to rapidly or proactively address issues.
My co-founder Steven Czerwinski and I first experienced this problem ourselves at Google. We were leading an infrastructure project supporting Google Docs, Drive, Photos and other related applications. There were a lot of moving parts, and the engineering team spent close to half of its time simply tracking down problems. We started Scalyr in 2011 to create the tool we wished we'd had at Google—one that would allow us to make sense of the flood of telemetry data and quickly understand why a complex system is misbehaving.
PK: How does Scalyr work?
SN: We're a fully managed SaaS solution. Logs are sent to our centrally hosted search cluster, using our agent or an array of API integrations. Engineers then use our web app (or APIs) to analyze, visualize and explore the logs.
The critical component is the back end. We've built the back-end software stack from scratch, optimizing for the data access patterns that arise in log management. Some interesting aspects of our approach are:
1) Unlike other log management solutions, we don't use indexes. Keyword indexes are optimized for finding the "best ten matches", in a corpus comprised of slowly evolving, human language text such as web pages or product descriptions. Log management use cases are very different, with small units of text (individual log messages), constantly updated, full of record IDs and other non-words that balloon the vocabulary size. Most important, log management queries generally visualize a complete data set, rather than stop after ten high-ranking results. Keyword indexes don't help much there, and they are complex, expensive to maintain and often impose multi-minute ingestion delays.
We've taken a much simpler approach, building a streamlined, columnar data store that's optimized for log data. The basic idea is that we just store logs and scan them, like good old-fashioned grep. We then use a lot of tricks to minimize the amount of data that needs to be scanned; for instance, when querying specific fields of a log, the columnar data layout means that we need to scan only those fields.
2) We process queries one at a time, globally. This allows each customer to use our entire search cluster, with aggregate search performance of 1.5 terabytes per second. It's fast enough (96% of queries complete in less than one second) that queries almost never wait in line—we finish each query before the next one arrives. The nice thing about this approach is that there's an economy of scale: as our customer base grows, performance increases.
3) We've built a separate back end for repetitive queries, such as those used in dashboards or alerting rules. This part of the system is based on a time series database, with a custom time series for each query. The ingestion engine automatically updates these time series as log messages arrive. This means we don't need to execute queries to display a dashboard or evaluate an alerting rule—the relevant data has been precomputed in the time series. In database terms, we're automatically creating materialized views where needed.
PK: What makes Scalyr stand out or competitive with existing solutions?
SN: Speed, simplicity and scalability.
Speed was central to our mission from day one. Logs are a massively useful, detailed data source, but when it takes minutes (or longer) to run a query, engineers avoid using them. We satisfy most queries in a fraction of a second. We also ingest data in real time: new logs are available for querying within a few seconds.
Simplicity goes hand in hand with speed, which is best measured as the time from a question in an engineer's head to an answer on his or her screen. The fastest back end in the world is of little use if you spent five minutes wrestling with the query language. We rely on our performance, as well as our ability to parse logs and extract structured data on ingestion, to provide a set of visual exploration tools that allows engineers to get answers without becoming query language experts. There's a query language, but you can dive in without knowing anything about it.
Finally, customers often choose us for our scalability. We continue to work well not only as server count and data volume increase, but as a team grows. Scalyr works just as quickly whether it's three or 1,000 people looking at logs. This helps teams move away from the gatekeeper model of traditional log management to the concurrent, collaborative engineering model that modern organizations are increasingly adopting.
With Scalyr, companies for the first time have a log management platform that does not charge ruthless licensing fees for new users, involve long ramp-up times or require learning arcane query languages. It's meant for teams who need to move fast.
PK: Who would benefit from using Scalyr?
SN: Our sweet spot is organizations where the application is critical to the business. From B2B software to online retailers, dating platforms and media companies, every business' competitive advantage increasingly is the technology stack and the speed at which that stack can evolve. Scalyr is critical to enabling that. Some of our customers include NBCUniversal, OkCupid, Zalando and ReturnPath.
Within those organizations, the primary Scalyr user usually comes from engineering or DevOps. But Scalyr is simple enough to use that we often see usage spread to other roles like support, which can search logs to track down specific client problems. Some of our customers have upwards of 1000 individuals with Scalyr logins. Typically, half the users are active on a weekly basis, which is huge engagement compared to traditional log management platforms.
PK: How easily does Scalyr integrate into current production environments?
SN: It's our mission to meet customers where they are, so we support many different models. Some run their own servers or virtual servers. Some are on Kubernetes, while others are serverless. Regardless, setup first involves retrieving logs. The most common way of doing this is with a lightweight agent that customers can install as a container, sidecar or whatever they need. We also have API integrations to retrieve logs directly from the wide array of cloud services in use today.
Once the logs are flowing in, you're off and running, but an important further step is to set up parsing rules. This allows us to extract structured data, unlocking the full power of the analysis and visualization tools. To make this as easy as possible, we've built three generations of parsing engines. The current engine is so easy to use, we've literally put a button in the product that tells our support team to set up the rules for you. Of course, being engineers, many of our customers prefer to do it themselves. Conclusion
With today's internet, the "app" increasingly is the business (think of Uber, Airbnb, Amazon and so on), and getting to the bottom of downtime is crucial. This process is made more difficult than ever as the system or code is increasingly distributed with the use of containers, serverless and other technologies. That is where Scalyr comes in with its log analysis platform. It is crazy fast and easy to use. To learn more about this wonderful product, visit https://www.scalyr.com.

THE BIG IDEA:
— Vladimir Putin and President Obama are meeting formally for the first time in two years today, after the Russian president delivers his first speech to the United Nations General Assembly in a decade.
Their relationship is as frosty as ever. Russia, invoking the specter of the Islamic State as an excuse to prop up murderous Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, has deployed hundreds of soldiers, 28 fighter jets, helicopters, tanks and artillery into Syria.
The show of military power seems mainly designed to distract both the West and Putin’s own people from the mess he’s created in Ukraine, which triggered damaging economic sanctions.
Regardless of why he’s doing it, Putin’s engagement has made Syria’s multi-front and multi-player war even more chaotic and complicated to solve. We’ve come a long way since Obama drew that meaningless “red line” in August 2012.
Ahead of his sit-down with Obama, Putin mocked the failure of U.S. efforts to arm Syrian rebels on “60 Minutes.” In an interview with Charlie Rose that aired last night, the Russian pointedly mentioned embarrassing revelations about a costly three-year program to train and equip moderate rebels fighting Assad. Last week, it emerged that one rebel commander handed over a substantial part of the U.S.-provided military equipment to an Islamic State intermediary. “The initial aim was to train 5,000 to 6,000 fighters, then 12,000, but it turns out that only 60 were trained and only four or five are actually fighting,” Putin said. “All the others simply ran away with their American weapons to Islamic State!” The full transcript of the Putin interview, plus Charlie’s 10-minute package, is here. The Post’s diplomatic correspondent, Carol Morello, has more in her story from the U.N. meeting.

Russia further asserted itself in the Middle East this weekend by inking an intelligence-sharing agreement with Iraq. Iran and Syria are also involved. “The Iraqi military said in a statement that the new agreement was necessary because thousands of volunteers who have joined the Islamic State have come from Russia,” per the New York Times’ Michael R. Gordon. The move wasn’t coordinated with the United States, which Secretary of State John Kerry complained about and discussed yesterday with the Russian foreign minister on the U.N. sidelines. The deal not only puts Russia in a position to support Assad militarily, the Times notes, but it could enable the Kremlin to influence the choice of a successor if Assad eventually leaves.
Meanwhile, U.S. officials remain uncertain about Putin’s Syria strategy and confused about how to respond. “Administration decisions on a series of proposed adjustments to its strategy against the Islamic State have been put on hold pending more information about Russia’s intentions in Syria and President Obama’s desire for clarification of the proposals themselves,” senior administration officials tell The Post’s Karen DeYoung. “Putin’s moves have further delayed and complicated decision-making on plans that include sending U.S. arms directly to Kurdish and Arab rebels in northeastern Syria…. For now, officials said, Obama’s goal is to hear Putin out, to stress U.S. policy goals and warn against interference, and to determine whether there is room for cooperation.”
On the American side, the players are changing in the power struggle over U.S. policy: The State Department and Pentagon often clash, with diplomats demanding a more muscular approach and the military urging caution. DeYoung, our senior national security correspondent, notes that Gen. Martin Dempsey retired on Friday as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and was replaced by Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, commander until last month of the U.S. and international force in Afghanistan. State’s ISIS special envoy, retired Gen. John Allen — frustrated by the Pentagon’s reticence to use more force — is due to leave this fall.
Russian context: Putin’s entry into Syria, like almost everything else that he does, is part of his own bid to stay in power, Anne Applebaum explains in a smart column for today’s paper. “You and I might assume that the prospect of a Russian street revolution is far-fetched, but Putin, having watched what happened in East Germany in 1989 from his KGB office in Dresden, and having then watched what happened to Moammar Gaddafi in 2011, clearly worries about it quite often. … The arrival of Russian troops, some in transit directly from the Ukrainian border, is designed to reinforce this message: Putin is ready to help another dictator reestablish dictatorship, reassert control and imprison all of his enemies, in Syria and, if needed, in Russia too.”
As a signal of the popular unease with Putin, just yesterday the Kremlin-backed contender for governor of the Irkutsk region of Siberia lost to a communist candidate. It’s a rare and surprising defeat, per the AFP’s Moscow reporter. See a slideshow of the most awkward photos from Obama-Putin bilats here.
— Republicans are using today to try showing foreign policy chops —
— In Congress this week, we’ll see the eye before the storm. There won’t be a government shutdown, but passing the bill to fund the government through Dec. 11 only delays bigger battles on the sequester, debt ceiling and expiring tax breaks. Speaker John Boehner unleashed yesterday on the forces who prompted his resignation. Calling them “false prophets” who promise more than they deliver, Boehner complained on “Face the Nation” that conservative outside groups “whip people into a frenzy believing they can accomplish things that they know — they know! — are never going to happen.” He said he would try in his last month to get as much done as he could, saying he didn’t want to leave behind a “dirty barn” for his successor. He also called Ted Cruz a “jackass” without using the term and announced he will impanel a select committee to investigate the Planned Parenthood videos.
Meanwhile, would-be GOP House leaders will keep jockeying for position in the free-for-all leadership races. Even Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.), a Boehner antagonist, told “Fox News Sunday” that McCarthy has the “inside track” for the job. “I do think Kevin is a much more ground-up than top-down type of leader,” he said. But the races for the secondary slots are still very much wide open. The Freedom Caucus, whose members agitated for Boehner’s ouster, has not coalesced behind a candidate for speaker or any of the other posts. Illinois Rep. Pete Roskam now has 50 signatures for a party meeting to talk things through (something establishment Republicans want to avoid as they aim for a quick changing of the guard). If you missed it Saturday, check out the special edition of the 202 on what to expect in the post-Boehner world here.
WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING:
— By the year 2065, Asians will surpass Hispanics as the largest source of immigrants flowing into the United States. That detail is in a new Pew Research Center immigration survey that posted at midnight. The study coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which ended a quota system favoring Northern European immigrants. Since then, roughly half of all immigrants to the U.S. have hailed from Latin America with Mexicans comprising the largest share of the influx. That wave has dramatically changed the nation’s racial makeup: 84 percent of Americans were non-Hispanic whites in 1965; today that number is 62 percent. Asians will ultimately overtake Hispanics for a number of reasons, including a lower birth rate for Mexican women and a big slowdown in illegal immigration.
Five stats jumped out at us while reading the Pew study:
— The stage collapsed behind Carly Fiorina at an event in San Antonio (amazingly, no one was hurt):
— Jonathan Papelbon attacked Bryce Harper in the dugout, leading to a brawl. The Nationals lost 12-5 to the Phillies, a day after the Mets clinched the division:
— Donald Trump will unveil his tax plan at 11 a.m., calling for higher rates on the rich. On CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Trump told Scott Pelley from his Fifth Avenue Manhattan penthouse that the tax plan would hike taxes on the wealthy while eliminating some “unfair deductions.” “What kind of Republican are you?” Pelley quipped. “I don’t want to have certain people on Wall Street getting away with paying no tax,” Trump replied. The real-estate mogul revealed that a “large segment of our country” (referring to the poor) would pay a “zero rate” and that middle-class and corporate tax rates would also go lower. See the full interview here.
— First in The 202: Mike Huckabee rolling out leadership teams across four Southern states. The former Arkansas governor could be a very serious force on March 1 in the so-called SEC Primary. Assuming he comes out of the early states strong, namely Iowa and South Carolina, he’s focused on amassing momentum in favorable Southern states that have jointly scheduled their primaries to increase the region’s clout. “The early SEC primary elections are a key plank to our campaign strategy,” Huckabee said in a statement.

SUNDAY SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:
— Hillary said she’s done everything she can to answer questions regarding the homebrew e-mail server she used as secretary of state. “This is a contest, and it’s fair game for people to raise whatever they choose to raise … you know they’re not giving this job away,” Clinton said on “Meet the Press.” “Of course I take responsibility. It was my choice. It was a mistake back when I did it, and I’m trying to do the best I can to answer all of the questions that people have.”
— Martin O’Malley said “legitimate questions” remain about Hillary’s e-mails on CNN’s “State of the Union.” He used the issue to call for more debates. “Otherwise, our party is being defined by Hillary Clinton’s email scandal, and it’s not good for our country,” he said.
— Ben Carson seemed to double down on his comments about a Muslim president on ABC’s “This Week,” arguing that Islam was based on sharia law and he’d change his mind about that when someone can “show me an improved Islamic text that opposes sharia.” He suggested that a Muslim would need to renounce their Holy texts to become president.
— Jeb Bush defended his tax plan to “Fox News Sunday.” Slammed for giving lopsided tax breaks to the wealthy, he told Chris Wallace: “The simple fact is 1 percent of people pay 40 percent of all the taxes. Of course, tax cuts for everybody is going to generate more for people that are paying a lot more. I mean that’s just the way it is.”
— An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll showed Hillary leading the Democratic field with 42 percent, to 35 percent for Sanders and 17 percent for Biden. On the GOP side, Trump got just 21 percent to Carson’s 20 percent. Rubio and Fiorina are tied at 11 percent for third place.
— “It’s make or break time for Jeb Bush,” by Ed O’Keefe and Matea Gold: “Jeb Bush is entering a critical phase of his Republican presidential campaign, with top donors warning that the former Florida governor needs to demonstrate growth in the polls over the next month or face serious defections among supporters. The warnings, expressed by numerous senior GOP fundraisers in recent days, come as Bush and an allied super PAC are in the early stages of an aggressive television ad campaign that they believe will help erase doubts about his viability. Much of the chatter seems to revolve around the choice between Bush and fellow Floridian Marco Rubio. Right now, the momentum appears to be behind Rubio, who has jumped ahead of Bush in most polls…. ‘People are looking at the stage and saying: ‘Jeb and Marco? I’m going with the new,” said a top party fundraiser not aligned with a campaign. ‘You’re seeing people really gravitate to him and saying, ‘OK, we’ll buck the Bush machine. What I hear everywhere when you say Jeb’s name is, ‘If you want to lose the general election, nominate Jeb.'”
— “Elizabeth Warren just gave the speech that Black Lives Matter activists have been waiting for,” by Wesley Lowery: “In a Sunday speech on racial inequality, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) called for broad policing reform — including de-escalation training and body cameras for all police officers — and likened the current Black Lives Matter movement to the civil rights movement that won black Americans the right to vote in the 1960s…. ‘None of us can ignore what is happening in this country. Not when our black friends, family, neighbors literally fear dying in the streets,’ Warren said. ‘This is the reality all of us must confront, as uncomfortable and ugly as that reality may be. It comes to us to once again affirm that black lives matter, that black citizens matter, that black families matter….’ Warren’s address … was perhaps the most full-throated endorsement to date by a federal lawmaker for the ongoing protest movement, and it drew immediate praise from some of the most visible activists.” Read the full speech here.

— ZIGNAL VISUAL: Carly Fiorina is getting a lot more buzz, but much of it is negative and she’s quickly becoming a deeply polarizing figure. She is not only cutting into Trump’s lead in GOP polls. She’s also rivaling Trump for her ability to divide the electorate. This weekend, our analytics partners at Zignal Labs tracked more than 48,000 mentions of Fiorina across all forms of media. She grabbed 10 percent of the overall media mentions of all GOP candidates, the most frequently-mentioned candidate except for Trump. This first chart below shows a state-by-state comparison of the Twitter traffic over the weekend of her and Ben Carson. The former HP CEO was mentioned more frequently in nearly every state:
But the talk hasn’t always been positive. The continued controversy surrounding her dubious claims about Planned Parenthood has galvanized Democratic opposition. Many Fiorina Twitter mentions were very unflattering. The map below compares Carson and Fiorina again, but instead of comparing volume, it compares the sentiment relayed in those tweets. The redder the state, the more positive the mentions for Fiorina. The bluer the state, the more positive for Carson. Note how the map changes:

GOOD READS FROM ELSEWHERE:
— Politico, “Presidential politics complicates trade talks,” by Doug Palmer: “Top trade officials from the United States, Japan and 10 Pacific Rim countries will be holed up in an Atlanta hotel this week to try to finish a giant trade deal against the backdrop of an increasingly raucous presidential campaign that could make it harder to win congressional approval…. The largest trade deal in history is facing the potential for increasing pushback from the left, with Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton coming under intense pressure from progressives to reject the deal she promoted as secretary of state and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders — a staunch foe of the TPP — rising in the polls. Now, the earliest the pact could get to Congress is winter or spring because of the timelines built into a law to ‘fast-track’ approval of the deal, which lawmakers passed this summer.”
— USA Today, “DEA Agents kept jobs despite serious misconduct,” by Brad Heath and Meghan Hoyer: “The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has allowed its employees to stay on the job despite internal investigations that found they had distributed drugs, lied to the authorities or committed other serious misconduct, newly disclosed records show…Of the 50 employees the DEA’s Board of Professional Conduct recommended be fired following misconduct investigations opened since 2010, only 13 were actually terminated, the records show. And the drug agency was forced to take some of them back after a federal appeals board intervened…. In one case listed on an internal log, the review board recommended that an employee be fired for ‘distribution of drugs,’ but a human resources official in charge of meting out discipline imposed a 14-day suspension instead. The log shows officials also opted not to fire employees who falsified official records, had an ‘improper association with a criminal element’ or misused government vehicles, sometimes after drinking.”
— Associated Press, “Marco Rubio ramping up campaign with more time in the early states,” by Catherine Lucey and Kathleen Ronayne: “Rubio says he’s about to start spending a whole lot more time in Iowa and the other early voting states. … He recently hired a state director in Iowa, a position other campaigns have had in place for months, and has booked millions in television ads that will start airing in November…. Rubio has visited New Hampshire just seven times this year, and five times since he announced his candidacy. By contrast, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will make his 14th visit to the state next week, while New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has been there close to two dozen times. Rubio’s trip this week to Iowa was only his eighth this year, far fewer than many of his competitors.”
HOT ON THE LEFT
Bernie Sanders is belatedly stepping up his Hispanic outreach (and he’s doing it in en Espanol). From the Inquisitr: “One concern that has been leveled regarding Sanders’ campaign and chances for receiving the Democratic nomination, or earning the presidency, is that he has been slow in reaching minority voters. On Tuesday, Sanders aims to correct this, with an online Q&A directed at those voters whose primary language is Spanish. Sanders announced the event on Sunday, with a post on his Facebook page.”
HOT ON THE RIGHT
The far right wants Mitch McConnell’s ouster now too. From the Washington Times: “McConnell needs to resign!!” Louisiana GOP Chairman Roger Villere wrote in a Facebook post. He also serves on the RNC’s executive committee.” Put this in the category of “Not Going to Happen.”
— What’s happening today on the campaign trail: Donald Trump hosts a group of evangelical pastors for a private meeting and prayer session at Trump Tower in New York City. Bernie Sanders speaks at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics. In Florida, Marco Rubio greets voters in The Villages. South Carolina’s senior senator, Lindsey Graham, attends a town hall meeting hosted by the state’s junior senator, Tim Scott, in Myrtle Beach. In Iowa, Bobby Jindal campaigns in Washington and Keosauqua, while Chris Christie holds a town hall in Alden.
— On the Hill: The House meets at 2 p.m. for legislative business with votes expected at 6:30 p.m. The Senate reconvenes at 4:30 p.m. to prepare for a procedural vote on a clean short-term spending bill.
— At the White House: President Obama is in New York City for a series of events at the United Nations, including his address to the General Assembly and his bilateral meeting with Putin. Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama stay in N.Y.C. overnight. In Washington, Vice President Biden meets with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and holds a reception in honor of the 21st anniversary of the passage of the Violence Against Women Act.
QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“The good news is they probably won’t use marriage equality as a wedge issue like they did in 2004 because the country has come too far,” a feisty President Obama said during a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in New York last night. “In fact, America has left the leaders of the Republican Party behind. One of their leading candidates argued that going to prison turns you gay.… Another candidate boasts that he introduced an amendment to end nationwide marriage equality — which isn’t even an accomplishment at all. A third says Americans should just disobey the Supreme Court’s ruling entirely. I’m sure he loves the Constitution — except for Article III. And maybe the Equal Protection Amendment. And the 14th Amendment, generally.”
NEWS YOU CAN USE IF YOU LIVE IN D.C.:
— Weather wise, the week will start like summer and end like fall. “This act of cloudy skies and the occasional rain chance is growing old, but it’s the weather pattern we’re stuck with for much of the week. After a warm Monday with just a slight chance of showers, a toasty Tuesday sets the stage for a healthy dose of downpours by the evening hours,” the Capital Weather Gang reports.
— The District’s inspector general has filed an ethics complaint against the head of Metro’s board, accusing Mortimer Downer of serving as a paid adviser to a company that received “tens of millions of dollars” in contract work for the system.

Big Data companies come in many different shapes and flavors. In fact you might say, a list of Big Data companies necessarily contains vendors with highly contrasting strategies – clearly, the data analytics market is in rapid flux.
Standards? Kind of. Not exactly. Depends who you ask.
It has been just seven years since Yahoo introduced Hadoop but the concept behind it, Big Data, has exploded in popularity as more and more firms launch pilot programs to gain insight from the massive amounts of data at their disposal.https://o1.qnsr.com/log/p.gif?;n=203;c=204660771;s=9478;x=7936;f=201812281332180;u=j;z=TIMESTAMP;a=20403946;e=i
Big Data has matured differently than most technologies, however. First, no one leader has emerged after nearly a decade. The analytics industry is still in growth mode, and leaders emerge when an industry consolidates.
Secondly, the big names got in the market early in a big way. That's also unprecedented, because established vendors have traditionally been notoriously slow to embrace a new technology. But already, IBM, Microsoft, SAP, HP, and Oracle are in the game.
So, which tools and platforms should you choose? Here are 25 of the top companies to consider in the Big Data world.
Please note: this list is NOT a ranking – the strategies are too different. So company number 7, for instance, is not a “better” Big Data vendor than company number 20.
The many Big Data companies on this list offer approaches that focus on many different IT sectors.Tableau
Originally spun out of Stanford University as a research project, Tableau started out by offering visualization techniques for exploring and analyzing relational databases and data cubes and has expanded to include Big Data research. It offers visualization of data from any source, from Hadoop to Excel files, unlike some visualization products that only work with certain sources, and works on everything from a PC to an iPhone.

Alation crawls an enterprise to catalog every bit of information it finds and then centralizes the organization's knowledge of data, automatically capturing information on what the data describes, where the data comes from, who's using it and how it's used. In other words, it turns all your data into metadata, and allows for fast searches using English words and not computer strings. The company's products provide collaborative analytics for faster insight, a unified means of search, provides a more optimized data structure of the company's data, and assists in better data governance.
