evaluating Unix versions: AIX, HP-UX and Solaris | killexams.com Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

In my remaining tip, I compiled an inventory of the top 50 Unix instructions. every of the instructions I mentioned are available on...

the right three Unix editions: Solaris, AIX and HP-UX. listed here, i'll walk you in the course of the history of these Unix flavors, talk about some their basic differences and close with a command table assessment of critical initiatives.

solar SolarisSolaris, sun's Unix version, changed into definitely the successor of SunOS, going again to1992. SunOS turned into firstly according to the BSD flavor of Unix, while SunOS models 5.0 and later are in line with Unix device V free up four (rebranded as Solaris).

How did this turn up? Let's go further lower back in time. SunOS version 1.0 became delivered in 1983 with assist for solar-1 and sun-2 methods. edition 2.0 was introduced in 1985 -- its claim to reputation become virtual file gadget (VFS) and NFS. In 1987, AT&T and solar introduced that they would work collectively on a project to merge system V and BSD into one release, according to SVR4. Solaris 2.four turned into sun's first Sparc/x86 liberate. The ultimate free up of SunOS become version four.1.4 in November 1994. Solaris 7 became its first 64-bit ultra Sparc free up and brought native guide for file gadget metadata logging. Solaris 9, introduced in 2002, introduced guide for Solaris volume supervisor and Linux capabilities. Solaris 10 was first introduced in 2005, which has a couple of innovations, including aid for its new ZFS file equipment, Solaris Containers and Logical Domains.

Solaris is at the moment as much as edition 10; the latest update was released in October 2008. amongst its improvements is aid for paravirtualization, where Solaris 10 is used as a visitor in Xen-based environments.

simple adjustments and wonderful features. Solaris is free and open source, dispensed through the OpenSolaris working system. Solaris is a greater command-line primarily based Unix operating gadget than HP-UX or AIX. As a realistic count number, it does not have anything else similar to gadget Administration supervisor (SAM) on HP-UX or device management Interface tool (SMIT) on AIX. Solaris runs on Sparc and x86 environments. It also has the latest file equipment around -- ZFS, which has made amazing strides in fresh years, including the skill to now use it as its root file gadget. ZFS has the potential to be the top-rated all-around Unix file gadget. Solaris has many the right way to enforce virtualization, together with Containers/zones, xVM Server, Logical Domains and hardware partitioning.

Hewlett-Packard HP-UXHP-UX, Hewlett-Packard's Unix, changed into originally in keeping with system V liberate 3. It in the beginning ran solely on PA-RISC HP 9000 platform. version 1 of HP-UX became launched in 1984. edition 9, delivered its personality-based mostly graphical user interface (GUI), SAM, from which one administrates the device. version 10, delivered in 1995, introduced changes in the layout of the device file and directory structure, making it similar to AT&T SVR4. version 11 became introduced in 1997 and became HP's first release to support sixty four-bit addressing. In 2000, it turned into rebranded to 11i, when HP delivered working environments, bundled corporations of layered applications for certain IT applications. In 2001, edition 11.20 delivered assist for Itanium systems. HP-UX changed into the first Unix that used entry control Lists (ACLs) for file permissions and became additionally one of the vital first to introduce developed-in guide for Logical extent manager. nowadays, HP-UX uses Veritas as its fundamental file system as a result of the close partnership between Veritas and HP. HP-UX is at the moment as much as release 11iv3, replace four.

primary changes and unique characteristics. HP-UX is the primary of the Unix techniques to allow its shoppers to buy specific working environments. as an instance, if you are searching for its excessive availability (HA) product Serviceguard, you would buy the specific product that bundles in HA. HP-UX is the only version that uses a 3rd-party file gadget -- Veritas (solar used to present this a long time in the past). HP has many types of virtualization, including nPartitions, vPars, Integrity digital Machines (IVMs) and useful resource partitions. This does have a bent to confuse some folks as a result of there are such a lot of decisions. HP-UX runs on both HP 9000s and Integrity Itanium programs. HP-UX 11v3 can aid up to 128 processor cores. HP-UX offers for a really strong command line apart from its menu bases gadget, SAM. performance tuning using kctune is in many methods less complicated to what AIX and Solaris present.

IBM AIXAIX changed into introduced by IBM in 1986. whereas it's based on Unix device V, it additionally has BSD roots and, more than some other taste, is a hybrid of each. AIX is the first OS to introduce a journaled file equipment (JFS). It turned into additionally the first to have an built-in Logical volume manager (LVM). IBM first ported AIX to its RS/6000 platform in 1989. edition 5L was a breakthrough liberate delivered in 2001 that offered for Linux affinity and logical partitioning with the Power4 servers. In 2004, AIX introduced virtualization in AIX 5.three. advanced vigor Virtualization (APV) offered micro-partitioning, shared processor pools and Symmetric multi-threading. In 2007, IBM more advantageous its virtualization product, coinciding with the release of AIX 6.1 and the Power6 architecture. It additionally rebranded APV to PowerVM. The AIX enhancements included a type of workload partitioning known as WPARs, that are akin to than Solaris zones/Containers but with greater functionality. The latest unlock is AIX 6.1.

primary changes and enjoyable qualities. IBM is extensively recognized as having the premiere virtualization product on the midrange, PowerVM. Some contemporary improvements consist of live software mobility (permitting one to fail over working partitions without taking downtime), active reminiscence Sharing and diverse shared processor swimming pools. No other taste of Unix can boast these virtualization qualities, nor can they match IBM's 40-yr historical past of virtualization -- PowerVM has evolved from mainframe/gadget z virtualization.

AIX runs simplest on IBM vigour techniques -- without difficulty the most powerful of midrange Unix servers. IBM sells the indisputable fact that AIX runs exclusively on vigor as a plus because it is fully optimized on this structure and it has a transparent street map around which the business adheres to religiously. it's going to even be mentioned that you can actually run each Linux and AIX partitions on this platform. Its LX86 virtualization add-on enables one to run x86 Linux functions that don't seem to be ported to the power structure. AIX has always had an built-in logical quantity supervisor, in contrast to different flavors that require add-on items. AIX is the simplest Unix that has persevered to grow market share in contemporary years, partly as a result of the capabilities of its energy hardware that continues to lead the box in reliably, availability and scalability.

Mixing windows and Linux: How Do You control option? | killexams.com Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

Microsoft’s home windows working methods account for the biggest share of server spending in the records middle, but windows is through no ability the simplest reveal on the town: Linux’s market share in selected is growing strongly. It’s starting to be because in crimson Hat commercial enterprise Linux (RHEL) and SUSE Linux business Server (SLES) there are at least two distros which are seen as commercial enterprise ready and proper for the large time, and additionally since it’s low-cost, manageable, respectable for virtualization and it runs the application that many individuals are looking to use. there are many extra reasons as smartly.

What that capability is that there will likely be many greater “tremendously combined” facts center environments (meaning environments working a major variety of servers the usage of each windows and Linux) in the future than there have been during the past. windows-simplest facts facilities, or ones which most effective run the unusual Linux server or two, will develop into increasingly rare.

but how do you control mixed environments? operating diverse administration systems for each platform is inefficient and would force many directors nuts. anyway, the whole factor of a management system is to enable the monitoring and controlling of every principal system in a company from a single console. no longer from two or three.

extra On blended Environments

Virtualization makes issues even more complicated: How do you manipulate windows and Linux servers which may well be running on physical servers or as digital machines operating on Microsoft’s Hyper-V, VMware’s ESX, or the Xen hypervisor?

Competing administration decisions

when you are coming from a home windows ambiance and relocating towards a blended atmosphere by way of implementing Linux, then you definately may also already be using Microsoft’s gadget center management device. system middle’s Operations supervisor 2007 module now contains (in beta) a move Platform Extensions pack with guide for:

  • HP-UX 11iv3 (PA-RISC and IA64)
  • sun Solaris 10 (SPARC and x86)
  • IBM AIX 5L V5.3, technology degree 6, SP5 (PowerPC) and, drastically,
  • crimson Hat commercial enterprise Linux 5 Server
  • Novell SUSE Linux enterprise Server 10 SP1
  • digital machines are managed from system middle the use of the digital computer supervisor 2008 (VMM) module, which also supports virtual machines running on VMware’s ESX server as well as Hyper-V. And VMM additionally integrates with VMware’s VI3 application so that it can be used to carry out VI3 management operations. for example, it's viable, from within VMM, to initiate a VMotion operation which strikes a running VMware digital computer from one actual host to a further devoid of stopping the virtual laptop. (Microsoft at the moment has no akin to VMotion —its short Migration comprises stopping the virtual laptop for some seconds as it is moved to a new host.)

by the use of competitors Novell offers its Zenworks management system, which comprises laptop and cellular device administration in addition to administration services for the following server platforms:

  • NetWare(R) 5.1, NetWare 6 and NetWare 6.5
  • Novell Open commercial enterprise Server
  • home windows 2000 Server and windows Server 2003
  • SUSE(R) Linux commercial enterprise Server eight and 9
  • crimson Hat advanced Server 2.1 and purple Hat business Server 2.1
  • purple Hat business Linux AS 3 and four and crimson Hat business Linux ES three and four
  • Solaris 9
  • Microsoft’s favorite Linux Distribution

both of these administration programs permit the administration of windows and each SLES and RHEL, but Microsoft seems to prefer the previous over the latter. Demonstrating this, the company signed a collection of agreements with Novell in November 2006 to work towards better interoperability between home windows and SLES in 4 areas:

  • virtualization
  • techniques administration
  • listing integration and identification
  • workplace document codecs
  • The deal, which runs at the least except 2012, has been treated with an excellent deal of suspicion by means of many individuals, partly because it can conveniently be construed as a method for Microsoft to get a “pet” Linux distro which it will probably control and use to get an improved understanding of Linux and purchasers’ causes for desirous to use it for its personal knowledge. The deal contains an contract for Microsoft to chorus from taking prison action towards Novell’s customers for the usage of Linux (which Microsoft claims infringes a lot of of its patents,) and also involves Microsoft making payments to Novell (and therefore in a roundabout way subsidizing SLES.) one way here's achieved is via buying aid coupons from Novell, which Microsoft then sells on to its purchasers at a reduction.

probably the most notable results of the contract is that SLES 10 is now the most effective Linux distro collectively supported via both organizations as a guest working system virtualized on Hyper-V, and windows Server 2008 is jointly supported when run as a paravirtualized guest on SLES the usage of the Xen hypervisor protected with the distro.

“The interop settlement is alive and working …”

regardless of the suspicion, many agencies view the interoperability contract as a positive step and are happy to take talents of the merits it offers. “The interop agreement is alive and working, and the incontrovertible fact that it's an extended term contract is first rate news,” says Nick Leake, Director of Operations and Infrastructure at ITV, a UK-based commercial broadcasting enterprise which runs about 200 windows servers and 100 SLES servers.

ITV has taken knowledge of the agreement between Microsoft and Novell to purchase discounted assist coupons for SLES, however Leake says this did not have an impact on his determination to put in force SLES in the first region. “We made the choice four years in the past, earlier than the Novell - Microsoft interop settlement,” he says. “We conducted an comparison manner before making the aware resolution to go with SUSE. We selected no longer to go with red Hat as a result of they don’t have the identical engagement degree with purchasers as SUSE, and when the Microsoft Novell deal got here alongside [it] easily proven that we had made the right resolution.”

Leake also says that the means to manage SLES from within Microsoft’s device center is terribly critical—although ITV opted to make use of Novell’s Zenworks to control each structures. He says assist for the operating methods in each other’s virtual environments is additionally a good suggestion.

As Linux turns into increasingly authorized it’s doubtless that combined facts center environments will become more and more commonplace. What’s more, the lines between diverse platforms will become greater blurred as virtualization—together with VMware’s vision of servers that will also be moved within an internal cloud and out to external cloud service suppliers - and more desirable interoperability make it viable to deal with home windows and Linux servers—both actual and virtual—readily as computing resources which are provisioned and managed with the equal tools in the identical way.

HP's Nehalem-EX iron set for June arrival | killexams.com Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

HP will launch its first wave of "beastie containers" in line with Intel's "Nehalem-EX" Xeon 7500 processors later this month, in keeping with sources generic with HP's plans.

There are three months when server makers customarily launch products: March, June, and September. And it feels like June is shaping as much as be a extremely busy month for the massive server gamers — exceptionally the king of the server hill, Hewlett-Packard.

As El Reg up to now reported, HP grew to become up on the Nehalem-EX launch adventure in San Francisco this spring, showing off some machines without covers and labels, and it wouldn't say much about its plans for this eight-core beast of a processor. absolutely, HP didn't wish to overshadow the Integrity line of "Tukwila" Itanium 9300 blade machines it debuted at the conclusion of April, a month after Intel's Xeon 7500 become trotted out.

(that you would be able to read about these blade bins here, get the preliminary feeds and speeds there, and get extra particulars on pricing of the high-end, sixteen-socket Superdome 2, which is never delivery except October, here. most likely, there are 32- and maybe even 64-socket types of the Superdome 2 machines, lashing collectively two or 4 of the Superdome 2 blade chassis collectively the usage of the sx3000 chipset's crossbar. after all, HP wants a huge bad Unix field to compete with IBM and Oracle/Fujitsu huge iron).

in the mean time, the marketplace for machines with 4 or eight sockets in keeping with the x64 architecture is diminishing, but with server virtualization now fitting good enough to assist database and mail server workloads, there could be a resurgence of larger box earnings. And the Nehalem-EX processors intention to fill that need for Linux, home windows, and most likely Solaris-on-x64 workloads. HP-UX has now not been ported to x64 processors, and HP has noted many times that it is not attracted to doing so because it already gave its HP-UX, OpenVMS, and NonStop valued clientele the forced march to Itanium. regardless of the unaggressive roadmap for the Itanium chips, Integrity customers will doubtless be satisfied with what HP is doing within the Itanium front.

in the wake of the Superdome 2 and Integrity blade server announcement in April, HP cut the expense on HP-UX 11iv3 for the Itanium 9300-based mostly methods, charging in response to the processor socket in its place of the core and at a fee that chops utility prices in half. Intel is charging truly the identical fee for Xeon 7500 chips as it does for Itanium 9300s, and with so many average constituents in the servers, HP says it will possibly chop the can charge of a Superdome device by way of round 40 percent. This can be adequate to maintain its shoppers in opposition t an IBM and Oracle/Fujitsu onslaught. we are going to see.

HP's Integrity backdrop place, no doubt, is a similar that IBM has used for more than a decade: in case you do not desire a proprietary system (like IBM's mainframes and AS/400s), then what about an influence-based container working AIX or Linux? And if that would not work, what about an x64 container running windows or Linux? HP has the ProLiant card it will probably play if it begins losing an Integrity store, and a fleshed out Xeon 7500 lineup of rack and blade servers are crucial at this point for shoppers who need extra processing oomph, reminiscence potential, and that i/O bandwidth than a two-socket ProLiant box using Intel's six-core Xeon 5600s or superior Micro gadgets' Opteron 6100s can. Which is why HP's future Nehalem-EX beastie boxes are strategically and tactically crucial. HP wants anything that smells just a little like Integrity however is an x64 field.

The DL580 and DL980 boxes are the first batch of Nehalem-EX beastie packing containers which are coming out of HP, and they're rack-based designs whose aim is to catch falling Integrity clients as well as supply ProLiant stores with burgeoning home windows and Linux workloads a spot to grow.

The be aware in the street is that the DL580 G7 server might be a four-socket field in a 4U chassis that uses Intel's 7500 sequence "Boxboro" chipset and helps sixty four memory slots. So with sixteen GB DDR3 memory sticks, that is 1 TB of reminiscence in a 4U container. both-socket ProLiant DL360 G7 and DL380 G7 servers accurate out at a comparatively small 192 GB in their 2U chassis. The DL580 presents 2.7 instances the memory for each socket of computing, and it must partly because of the difference between a six-core (Xeon 5600) and an eight-core (Xeon 7500) processor and also as a result of the buffered reminiscence architecture in the Nehalem-EX designs.

The Nehalem-EX processors come in a bunch of distinct flavors, together with Xeon 6500s that most effective work in two-socket machines and that are designed predominantly for supercomputing purchasers who need decrease heat, loads of flops, and low expenses and the Xeon 7500s, which are available models two, four, or eight socket bins that can link nodes collectively gluelessly. (that means, using the Boxboro chipset and not a chipset/router to hyperlink varied nodes right into a single system picture). each the Xeon 6500 and 7500 processors are available SKUs with four, six, or eight cores activated on the chip. The DL580 G7 is not geared toward HPC retail outlets in as a great deal as it has four processor sockets, and it can also be notion of as the staff of the HP's x64 midrange server lineup.

Comparing Unix versions: AIX, HP-UX and Solaris | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

In my last tip, I compiled a list of the top 50 Unix commands. Each of the commands I discussed are available on...

the top three Unix variants: Solaris, AIX and HP-UX. In this article, I'll walk you through the history of these Unix flavors, discuss some their fundamental differences and close with a command table comparison of important tasks.

Sun SolarisSolaris, Sun's Unix version, was actually the successor of SunOS, going back to1992. SunOS was originally based on the BSD flavor of Unix, while SunOS versions 5.0 and later are based on Unix System V Release 4 (rebranded as Solaris).

How did this happen? Let's go further back in time. SunOS version 1.0 was introduced in 1983 with support for Sun-1 and Sun-2 systems. Version 2.0 was introduced in 1985 -- its claim to fame was virtual file system (VFS) and NFS. In 1987, AT&T and Sun announced that they would work together on a project to merge System V and BSD into one release, based on SVR4. Solaris 2.4 was Sun's first Sparc/x86 release. The last release of SunOS was version 4.1.4 in November 1994. Solaris 7 was its first 64-bit Ultra Sparc release and added native support for file system metadata logging. Solaris 9, introduced in 2002, added support for Solaris Volume Manager and Linux capabilities. Solaris 10 was first introduced in 2005, which has a number of innovations, including support for its new ZFS file system, Solaris Containers and Logical Domains.

Solaris is presently up to version 10; the latest update was released in October 2008. Among its innovations is support for paravirtualization, where Solaris 10 is used as a guest in Xen-based environments.

Fundamental differences and unique characteristics. Solaris is free and open source, distributed through the OpenSolaris operating system. Solaris is a more command-line based Unix operating system than HP-UX or AIX. As a practical matter, it does not have anything comparable to System Administration Manager (SAM) on HP-UX or System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) on AIX. Solaris runs on Sparc and x86 environments. It also has the newest file system around -- ZFS, which has made great strides in recent years, including the ability to now use it as its root file system. ZFS has the potential to be the best all-around Unix file system. Solaris has many ways to implement virtualization, including Containers/zones, xVM Server, Logical Domains and hardware partitioning.

Hewlett-Packard HP-UXHP-UX, Hewlett-Packard's Unix, was originally based on System V release 3. It initially ran exclusively on PA-RISC HP 9000 platform. Version 1 of HP-UX was released in 1984. Version 9, introduced its character-based graphical user interface (GUI), SAM, from which one administrates the system. Version 10, introduced in 1995, brought changes in the layout of the system file and directory structure, making it similar to AT&T SVR4. Version 11 was introduced in 1997 and was HP's first release to support 64-bit addressing. In 2000, it was rebranded to 11i, when HP introduced operating environments, bundled groups of layered applications for specific IT purposes. In 2001, Version 11.20 introduced support for Itanium systems. HP-UX was the first Unix that used Access Control Lists (ACLs) for file permissions and was also one of the first to introduce built-in support for Logical Volume Manager. Today, HP-UX uses Veritas as its primary file system due to the close partnership between Veritas and HP. HP-UX is currently up to release 11iv3, update 4.

Fundamental differences and unique characteristics. HP-UX is the first of the Unix systems to allow its customers to purchase specific operating environments. For example, if you are looking for its high availability (HA) product Serviceguard, you would purchase the specific product that bundles in HA. HP-UX is the only version that uses a third-party file system -- Veritas (Sun used to offer this many years ago). HP has many forms of virtualization, including nPartitions, vPars, Integrity Virtual Machines (IVMs) and resource partitions. This does have a tendency to confuse some folks because there are so many choices. HP-UX runs on both HP 9000s and Integrity Itanium systems. HP-UX 11v3 can support up to 128 processor cores. HP-UX provides for a very strong command line in addition to its menu bases system, SAM. Performance tuning using kctune is in many ways simpler to what AIX and Solaris offer.

IBM AIXAIX was introduced by IBM in 1986. While it is based on Unix System V, it also has BSD roots and, more than any other flavor, is a hybrid of both. AIX is the first OS to introduce a journaled file system (JFS). It was also the first to have an integrated Logical Volume Manager (LVM). IBM first ported AIX to its RS/6000 platform in 1989. Version 5L was a breakthrough release introduced in 2001 that provided for Linux affinity and logical partitioning with the Power4 servers. In 2004, AIX introduced virtualization in AIX 5.3. Advanced Power Virtualization (APV) offered micro-partitioning, shared processor pools and Symmetric multi-threading. In 2007, IBM enhanced its virtualization product, coinciding with the release of AIX 6.1 and the Power6 architecture. It also rebranded APV to PowerVM. The AIX enhancements included a form of workload partitioning called WPARs, which are similar to than Solaris zones/Containers but with better functionality. The latest release is AIX 6.1.

Fundamental differences and unique characteristics. IBM is widely recognized as having the best virtualization product on the midrange, PowerVM. Some recent innovations include live application mobility (allowing one to fail over working partitions without taking downtime), Active Memory Sharing and multiple shared processor pools. No other flavor of Unix can boast these virtualization characteristics, nor can they match IBM's 40-year history of virtualization -- PowerVM has evolved from mainframe/System z virtualization.

AIX runs only on IBM Power Systems -- easily the most powerful of midrange Unix servers. IBM sells the fact that AIX runs exclusively on Power as a plus because it is fully optimized on this architecture and it has a clear road map around which the company adheres to religiously. It should also be noted that one can run both Linux and AIX partitions on this platform. Its LX86 virtualization add-on allows one to run x86 Linux applications that are not ported to the Power architecture. AIX has always had an integrated logical volume manager, unlike other flavors that require add-on products. AIX is the only Unix that has continued to grow market share in recent years, partly because of the capabilities of its Power hardware that continues to lead the field in reliably, availability and scalability.

One of the best references for Linux and UNIX system administrators over the years has been the "Handbooks" (either Linux Administration Handbook (LAH) or UNIX System Administration Handbook (USAH) at various points). But the last edition was published in 2000 (as USAH), and included information on then-current Red Hat Linux 6.2 and FreeBSD 3.4. A new, updated version, UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook, Fourth Edition (ULSAH), is due out any day now, and the principal authors, Evi Nemeth, Garth Snyder, Trent R. Hein, and Ben Whaley, agreed to answer some questions for LWN readers. Below are their answers on the book, the impact of Linux, the future for UNIX and Linux, and more.

LWN: Could you all please introduce yourselves? What are you working on when you're not writing system administration books?

Ben: I wear a bunch of different hats as an engineer at AppliedTrust in Boulder. In addition to consulting on architecture and operations in UNIX and Linux environments, I think a lot about next generation technologies. Virtualization (in its myriad forms), application security, and the adoption of open source are all of interest. I also have a interest in the history of computing generally, and of UNIX and Linux in particular. Outside of computing, I enjoy the republic of Boulder as much as possible.

Garth: I was one of the original authors of the UNIX book lo these many years ago, but I've spent time on a variety of projects since then. Over time, I've actually done more software development than administration.

Evi: I'm Evi Nemeth, former Computer Science faculty at the University of Colorado. I'm now out of the UNIX/Linux/CS world altogether; I retired, bought a sailboat, took off and am currently in French Polynesia, half way across the Pacific en route to New Zealand. I'm working on making my boat single-hander-friendly for when I run out of crew. I do have email on the boat via my ham radio; it's like uucp at about 100 characters per minute.

Trent: I'm a scientist at heart, and I love understanding all the layers of a system. When I'm not writing, I'm deep in the trenches working on IT infrastructure issues that range from low-level technical issues to policy and management.

[ULSAH book cover] LWN: The new version of the Linux Administration Handbook is on its way. When can we expect it, and what are you most excited about in this edition?

Ben: We anticipate a mid to late July shelf date. There is loads of new material in this combined UNIX and Linux edition, including new chapters on virtualization, scripting, and green IT practices. I'm very pleased with the new set of cartoons and cover art. Also, I'm thrilled to be included as a new author after contributing to the 2nd edition of the Linux book.

Garth: Many of the existing chapters have had near-complete rewrites as well. You might think that long-standing, basic technologies like disk storage and email would be relatively stable, but that's not true at all. The way that most sites manage these resources has changed completely just in the last five years or so.

Evi: LAH and USAH have merged back together. It's due out sometime soon (July 2010). I'm most excited that it's finally done; I left the boat in Panama and came back to Colorado for a year to work full time on the book — it's a huge amount of work.

Trent: It better be in bookstores in the next 2 weeks!! I'm super excited about the new Green IT section — it presents opportunities for sysadmins to make a huge difference to our planet.

LWN: What led to the decision to combine the UNIX and Linux versions of the book?

Ben: Linux is recognized as an enterprise-grade operating system that has proven its capabilities throughout the explosion of computing in the last twenty years. It has significant momentum behind it, much more so than other leading UNIX variants. One could argue that UNIX lives on but looks to Linux as its leader. It has enough in common with traditional UNIX that it make sense to cover it all in one place.

Garth: One factor that's helped make it possible to reintegrate is the dramatic shakeout in the UNIX market. There simply aren't as many major versions of Unix around as there were ten years ago. We've seen a similar consolidation in the Linux arena as well, with most activity consolidating around a few major distributions.

Evi: Personally, I'm not sure we should ever have separated UNIX and Linux into 2 books. We thought that conditional text (if Linux, blah, blah, else ...) would make it easy to manage both books with minimal effort. Not true. We also feel that this is probably the last edition that will be on paper and maybe the last edition period, so if we are doing one last book, let's cover all the systems we can. I'm sorry we didn't manage to include MacOS too.

Trent: Combining the books makes sense because system administrators manage both UNIX and Linux systems ... organizations shouldn't be separating duties for these platforms since they're so similar.

LWN: A lot of old-time Unix folks were taken by surprise when Linux hit the scene. You've seen a lot of Unix variants come and go; what, do you think, accounts for the way that Linux has been able to displace Unix in so many settings?

Evi: I think the fact that Linux ran on PCs instead of the special vendor specific hardware of most UNIX systems gave Linux a leg up. University students ran Linux on their PCs, graduated, and went to work in corporate America (Europe, etc.). Linux also embraced (or tolerated) Windows more than the UNIX vendors and found ways for the systems to co-exist peacefully.

Trent: The community. It's a lot easier to support Linux these days because if there's any issue, there are hundreds or thousands of people to turn to on the 'net for help. It's a lot easier than sitting on hold with a vendor's call center for hours.

LWN: What do you think is the future of "true" Unix?

Ben: In the near term I believe that UNIX environments will continue as they have, serving as venerable, tenured systems with proven stability and some powerful capabilities. Most of the UNIX systems I work with run heavy databases or specific enterprise applications. OpenSolaris is an impressive system with advanced features that don't exist elsewhere. In the longer term, it seems to me that Linux will displace UNIX. All the major vendors contribute to Linux's development (as LWN's own data suggests) and even promote standardization.

Garth: Traditional Unix vendors don't have the resources to compete against Linux on every front, so they've had to pick their battles and concentrate on distinguishing themselves through enterprise features such as database or filesystem performance. However, the number of domains in which it's possible to demonstrate a proprietary advantage over Linux is continuously shrinking. I don't see any reason for the current trends to change, so I'm pessimistic about the future of traditional Unix.

Evi: UNIXes that run on PC hardware will survive in niches — FreeBSD in embedded systems, OpenBSD in security conscious spots, Open Solaris if Oracle leaves it alone, etc., but systems on proprietary hardware (AIX, HP-UX, Solaris) will continue to decline in market share. Note that each of these three vendors is hedging their bets with a Linux product or with a Linux that runs on their hardware.

Trent: There's such a large installed base that I think Unix is going to be around for a very long, long time. But, I can tell you that almost all the new infrastructure I build is on Linux.

LWN: Is the success of Linux a good thing? Or would we be better off now if some version of Unix had established itself more strongly in the open-source era?

Ben: I was introduced to Linux before UNIX, and I suspect that I wouldn't be on the same path that I'm on today without it. In fact, I grew up from adolescence using Linux and today I look at closed systems as a broken, legacy model of development. I love the creativity and community that open systems offer. To me it's a great thing that has kept UNIX alive.

Garth: In some ways, this is like asking, "The rise of humanity: good or bad?" Linux has warts, but so do the alternatives. It's not the solution so much as the context in which other things happen.

Outside of a thousand minor differences, there really isn't a dime's worth of difference between the various Unix-like operating systems. They are all basically the same. (Well, except perhaps for AIX. Whatever else one might say about it, it's definitely not the same.) Fundamental, game-changing advances — such as Solaris's ZFS filesystem — are few and far between.

Evi: Yes, the success of Linux is a very good thing. Each open source "Unix" has strengths. Linux is quick to see a cool idea in another system, re-engineer it, and voila, it's part of Linux too.

Trent: Linux is great!! In a way, Linux is really UNIX for the people. We needed that. It's forced the entire industry to be more open, which I'm not sure a more established open-source UNIX would have achieved because it's inspired a shift in mindset.

LWN: If you could command the Linux development community to do one thing that would make life easier for system administrators, what would it be?

Ben: Settle on a few more standards, such as log formats, command line arguments, configuration file syntax, and extensibility. As always, the more documentation, the better. Active communities where developers and users interact are extremely valuable.

Garth: Unix and Linux developers have traditionally designed software to be as flexible and configurable as possible. A good example of this approach is the original sendmail, which knew practically nothing about email addressing or transport until you manually programmed that knowledge into its configuration file. Many common systems still take that general approach: here's the tool kit, build whatever you like. Have fun!

This approach has its advantages, but it also imposes a cognitive burden on everyone downstream of the developers. I'd like to see more focus on simplicity and predictability in Linux distributions and less concern about hypothetical scenarios and edge cases. A Linux server may be a lot more complicated than an iPhone, but it surely doesn't need to be 1000 times more complicated, as it currently is.

Unfortunately, it's especially hard to promote simplicity and clarity in the open source world. It's easy to accept patches that add incremental features but hard to remove anything or break compatibility. Reaching design consensus on future developments is hard enough without revisiting the messes of the past.

Evi: Standardize! Make command names, arguments, and behavior the same. Get rid of the not-invented-here attitude.

Trent: Keep it simple. The early success of both UNIX and Linux can be attributed to their simple, modular approach. Too often these days folks are developing packages that are like a giant corn maze (but I won't name any names!). We'll all get farther if the development community is focused on simplicity and modularity.

LWN: The world is now full of Linux users and administrators who have never touched a traditional Unix machine. What lesson from Unix do these folks risk missing in a Linux-only world?

Garth: The Linux community has put a lot of effort into strip-mining the UNIX systems of the past and digging out the nuggets of value that weren't nailed down. So no, I don't think administrators unfamiliar with traditional UNIX systems are missing too much. On the other hand, we do seem to be stuck in about 1990 with respect to our basic idea of what an operating system should be. Look at all the incredible developments we've seen over the last 20 years in application and web development; software is completely different now. I hope the triumph of UNIX and Linux don't lock us into the POSIX API indefinitely.

Evi: This generation of Linuxites have used UNIX, Linux is a UNIX system. It has commands that you type to a shell instead of driving thru a zillion menus, it has all the important concepts of UNIX, like pipes and input output redirection, it has man pages, ...

Trent: Process adherence. In the UNIX world of yesterday, we had giant machines that filled an entire room, and dozens or hundreds of users shared them. In order to achieve a reasonable service level, system administrators had to be very process-focused, else they would impact many users if a mistake occurred. Today, a single user may have dozens of systems, physical and virtual. System administrators still need to have a well-developed, well-followed set of processes to maintain them to provide an even higher level of service.

LWN: The world is also full of energetic new developers for whom open source has always just been part of the environment. These developers will be creating our next generation of systems. What kind of operating systems do you hope they will build, and what advice would you offer them on their way?

Ben: The cloud is clearly the direction that is currently leading the pack, and I'm anxious to see what happens next in the space. I hope that open source development continues to thrive. It will also be interesting to see what happens with security. People are paying a lot of attention to it these days, and we're well positioned to fix the less secure, trust-based models of earlier systems.

Evi: A fundamental principle of UNIX-ish operating systems is that they provide commands that do one thing well and then the plumbing to hook them together to get a final result. Windows-ish operating systems try to think of everything a user might want to do and make a command or option for it. If the Windows developer didn't think of the thing you need to do, you are out of luck. Next generation operating systems need the UNIXy approach. Keep things simple, take small steps, but do it well.

Trent: I hope they build operating systems that perform well. Back in the day, we had to optimize for every last cycle, because cycles were few. Some new OS developers have had the luxury of hardware being abstracted from them, and it's easy to forget what really happens at that layer. It's easy to fall into a pattern of slapping layer upon layer, resulting in a lot of kernel and application bloat. Keep it simple, and think about how to optimize for performance.

LWN: Anything else you would like to say to LWN's readers?

Ben: I'm a lurker on LWN and I've learned a lot from both the articles and the comments. I appreciate the active open source community on the site. Thanks for reading.

Garth: I'm excited about Btrfs and really looking forward to its debut as a production system. Check it out!

Evi: I need crew. Is there anyone out there (between jobs maybe) who isn't busy between September and November 2010? We share expenses on consumables; I pay for boat maintenance.

Trent: I hope in UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook (4th Edition) we teach folks how to be good system administrators and find answers on their own, rather than providing every possible answer for them. System administrators need knowledge acquisition and problem solving skills more than anything.

We would like to thank Evi, Garth, Trent, and Ben for taking the time to answer our questions.

Improving the Backup Experience By Making Intelligent Software Choices | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

    From the author of 

Many commercial Unix vendors have enhanced backup tools with decent error recovery built in. AIX has the aptly named backup and restore, while HP-UX has fbackup and frecover. Those, too, unfortunately, lack speed and user-friendliness, although, in the case of these vendors, menu-driven backup tools are provided through system administration menus.

To address this problem, many commercial vendors have entered partnerships with third-party tools to be delivered as part of their OS. Sometimes these tools are trial versions that require full licensing for continued use. Freeware tools are also available, particularly in the case of Linux. In fact, for the administrators running Linux, the field of choice is increasing at an incredible pace. Keep in mind, however, that many GNU tools will compile and run just fine on commercial Unixes.

What are the options and how do you decide what to use? Why pay for a package when others are available for the cost of a download?

I'll tell you a secret. Some pretty slick commercial packages are also available free of charge, provided that you use them in non-profit, non-commercial environments. For example, Enhanced Software Technologies makes BRU (stands for "Backup and Restore Utility), an incredibly easy-to-use, yet powerful and reliable backup utility. The difference is that the personal (or free) edition will not back up remotely mounted drives or Samba shares, or allow the use of remote tape drives. If you are running a single server at home, this is still a pretty good deal. Another contender for slick and powerful, Arkeia from Knox Software, will let you back up two Windows 9x clients. Another free backup utility that provides great commercial features like indexes stored at the beginning of the tape and graphical search tools is taper, which is designed specifically for Linux.

Free tools offer the hard-to-beat argument of low price while still providing reliability. Commercial tools generally provide maturity and easy to use interfaces. Multiplatform support is another issue. If you need to work with a variety of operating systems and you want to maintain a common backup strategy and set of tools across your enterprise, you will likely have to spend the money. For instance, imagine a network of several Windows workstations, a Solaris Web server, an AIX machine, a DGUX server, a couple of NT boxes, and a Novell server. This kind of mixed environment is not unusual, so many commercial vendors will take this into account. For instance, Legato provides software that works in precisely this kind of environment with a central server that backs up remote clients across the network. So does Arkeia, mentioned earlier. Furthermore, some of these advanced tools enforce good tape rotation practices with strict, built-in rule sets.

Even in this complex environment, it's not so cut and dry. Enter AMANDA, the "Advanced Maryland Automated Network Disk Archiver," a freeware tool developed at the University of Maryland. With AMANDA, you set up a central server with a high-capacity tape drive to back up multiple network connected hosts. With Samba, AMANDA can also back up Windows 9x workstations. This is a powerful, multiplatform, network backup solution that costs nothing other than the time to download, compile, and learn.

Some of these network packages use multiple network streams so that several machines back up at the same time. Sure, it sounds great, but there are costs. In the case of a commercial package, there are the obvious software costs of per-client licensing, but that's only one consideration. What about the drain on your network? If you back up during the day or use multiple network streams to do the backup, you may find network applications to be quite slow. Does your network backup solution suddenly require that you invest in a fibre network to take up the slack? What about data recovery, the very reason for backups in the first place? When the inevitable happens and you must recover from a crash, you will likely need to rebuild a working, networked system before you can even consider getting at your data. Many large-scale network backup solutions are better at providing access to individual files than completely restoring a crashed server. You may still need to do regular OS backups and maintain snapshot configurations of your system so that you can re-create filesystems, devices, network addressing, and so on.
