HP claims to have put inner most cloud, hybrid cloud and possibly public cloud in its pocket to promote to businesses and service suppliers. however CloudSystem, because it is time-honored, isn't so a lot a platform as a group of intersecting HP items and roadmaps to get cloud capabilities -- elastic, self-carrier provisioning, storage and metered use -- into your information core.
At coronary heart, or not it's the Cloud carrier Automation software that makes or breaks the HP cloud.
there is CloudSystem Matrix, CloudSystem business, CloudStart answer, Cloud carrier Automation, Cloud provider birth, CloudMaps, Cloud Matrix working ambiance, CloudSystem protection, CloudAgile, and on and on. HP has a lot of stuff stamped "cloud." What's extra, there isn't a shrink-wrap; you opt for bits here and there, and HP helps you installation and tune it. fortunately, there may be at the least one instance in the wild to peer what really constitutes an "HP cloud."
"yes, they do have tons to examine," stated Christian Teeft, VP of engineering for facts center operator and functions provider Latisys. Teeft said Latisys may additionally neatly have the primary reside CloudSystem atmosphere at an HP consumer. Latisys is using the gadget to promote cloud infrastructure services, which are available "inner most" and "semi-private" alternate options; committed clouds for shoppers, as it had been.
Teeft referred to Latisys intentionally leaned faraway from startups and smaller cloud platform carriers, speaking to business carriers and other service providers like NewScale, Joyent, BMC and others about automation, however HP had the country club marquee valued clientele and Teeft favored the combination with HP's hardware.
"There are synergies with HP around hardware blade systems and ISS," he mentioned.
industry common Server know-how Communications (ISS know-how communications) is HP's means of distributing expertise publications and innovations to users, a bit like Microsoft's TechNet.
Teeft pointed out cloud computing for commercial enterprise shoppers changed into fitting a reasonably mainstream request, although specific usage could be exploratory or restricted to definite workloads, all new consumers wanted to peer the ability purchasable.
"it be a checkmark on loads of RFPs and RFIs nowadays," he said.
HP additionally touts the ability of CloudSystem to make use of exterior public cloud features. Teeft stated he turned into aware of the means to do hybrid clouds but that wasn't primary to him. Latisys' cloud is unequivocally staying excessive and dry from melding with other services.
"Our workload goes to live within our four walls for now," he said.
Teeft observed CloudSystem had two other key merits for a provider company. it's hypervisor agnostic, meaning they can serve greater than just VMware users, and unlike cloud-in-a-box options like the vBlock or Oracle's Exalogic or Cisco's UCS, it might probably run off a small hardware allotment firstly.
"It allowed us to do a special scale… we didn't ought to sink a few million dollars right into a vBlock or some thing," he mentioned.
So what exactly is CloudSystem? The significant component of CloudSystem is the Cloud provider Automation utility, which is based on Opsware. HP is promoting three core accessories: HP Converged Infrastructure (operating whatever thing called the Matrix working environment), Cloud provider Automation (CSA) and HP's own help functions to keep it working.
The Matrix OE is HP perception, definitely, and handles low-stage provisioning, monitoring and management for actual and virtual supplies. It also helps with community administration by using hooking into HP virtual connect business manager (VCEM). Cloud service Automation is frequently Opsware, which HP acquired in 2007. That offers every little thing else mandatory to turn your infrastructure into a cloud -- the consumer interfaces (and consumer management), provisioning equipment, configuration and workflow tools, and management/monitoring shows -- a entrance-conclusion resource supervisor and orchestration device. it could actually faucet into HP's own Infrastructure as a provider offerings when these come online and with different public cloud capabilities like Amazon internet features, in line with the literature.
HP says that HP blades and 3PAR storage are the hardware component for CloudSystem, however say most x86-based mostly servers and SAN storage can work with the Cloud carrier Automation software.
"They also sell that separately, so you can just purchase the application answer and put it to your hardware," said Forrester analyst Lauren Nelson, who has spoken to a handful of CloudSystem early adopters.
Nelson noted that the CSA cloud platform offers all the integral components to show a bunch of servers into anything similar to Amazon internet functions or Rackspace Cloud. The user interface is rarely polished, according to Nelson, however the performance is there; it's on par with products like Eucalyptus, Abiquo and Cloud.com.
"With Abiquo, which you could change the color of the interface background, I consider," observed Nelson.
The motive HP is selling the software one at a time as an alternative of an unique hardware/utility bundle is that it desires to please each side: providers like Latisys, and additionally the shoppers who are on the fence about running their own infrastructure or outsourcing. there may be a powerful impulse in firms to do whatever thing in the manner of private cloud this yr, spoke of Nelson, but clients wish to start small if they probably can.
HP has a lot of stuff stamped "cloud."
"in case your infrastructure is really at the back of, you are going to be a hardware/utility answer or hosted private cloud," she mentioned. "if you're not reasonably as involved concerning the hardware, you might possibly be looking at just the application this yr."
HP has a couple of additional utility enhancements for the base platform, like Tipping aspect, which offers some network security, intrusion detection and site visitors administration aspects. CloudMaps are templates for the platform in accordance with standard enterprise utility stacks, HP ArcSight will also be used for compliance, HP Storage essentials and so forth. Aggregation Platform for SaaS (AP4SaaS) has billing and templates for software as a service suppliers baked in. All of those are sideshows to the Cloud provider Automation utility.
IT giants compete for cloud dominanceNelson spoke of that, at the moment, handiest HP and IBM have an entire kit to offer firms around deepest cloud, meaning entirely integrated hardware and utility to run and guide it. Dell's partnerships with Joyent and Microsoft (Hyper-V fast song) and its own digital Infrastructure gadget (VIS) weren't on the same degree, and the pure-play cloud systems require lots of work to tune for a lot of sorts of infrastructure. they are also a riskier guess, because the companies have an doubtful future.
HP has put up a big tent for its deepest cloud items and piled it crammed with bric-a-brac. At coronary heart, despite the fact, or not it's the Cloud carrier Automation application that makes or breaks the HP cloud. Experimenting with and adopting cloud items in house is directly fitting a fact for many businesses, and the huge companies are obviously trying to step as much as the plate. but if nothing else, here is yet a further solution to demonstrate that cloud computing isn't just greater of the identical historical facts center operations.

Why software automation support is needed in today’s networks
Anyone working in network admin today knows that the network has long since blown passed the days of being managed as a collection of devices. The days of network admins using the CLI to configure devices, or “automating” some tasks with TCL scripts may have worked in the 1990’s or early 2000’s, but it’s simply not enough to keep up with the scale and complexity of today’s networks. That said, the business mission for the network hasn’t changed. If anything, in today’s world of digital transformation, that mission has become even more critical – highly reliable services, rapid remediation of issues, efficient services upgrade process, security.
Administrators must have the ability to manage all those network devices and their services thru software. As a result, the use of traditional CLI copy-paste configurations process is going away, and being replaced by a vast usage of API’s to automate large scale networks.
This is what Cisco’s DNA Intent Based Networking is all about.
Network administrators can now build simple, yet very powerful software to manage their networks, to automatically detect and alert them for any abnormal behavior, get real time (or close to real time) network status, easily configure and maintain the deployed network devices, etc.
Programmable Networks and the New World of Intent Based Networking
This new world of the intent based, programmable network is not possible unless you have network devices that are programmable. Everything should start with a proper infrastructure management on the device itself. That’s where Cisco’s IOS-XE comes in – a newly designed, highly programmable operating system for Cisco switches and routers in the enterprise network, which aids the network administrators to manage today’s networks.
IOS-XE has support for various popular open standard modelled API’s for ‘off-box’ automation to achieve this. (I.E: OpenConfig, NetConf/Yang):
By modeling each network element’s attributes (e.g. BGP, QoS, ACL, etc.) in a structured data structure (e.g. XML/JSON formats, network admins can leverage various parsing API’s techniques (e.g. Python’s xml.dom.minidom), to develop easy to maintain and easy to scale code.
Since we will not rely on any dedicated CLI syntax to push and/or get the device’s configurations/attributes, the API approach is much more preferred as new features/attributes can be augmented to the modeled tree.
This modeled system representation saves a great deal of development cycles for the customers. As long as a network vendor sticks to the models approach, customers can use the same script to automate a Cisco switch, an HP switch, a Juniper router… – Customers no longer need to spend time and money hiring people to specifically develop automation for HP CLI, or for Cisco CLI or for Brocade CLI… The same script that configures the common device’s attributes with Netconf will work on any vendor!
Network Devices, now with Linux Built In
In recent years, many network vendors push to have Linux OS based flavors on their devices’ operating systems, to allow more openness when it comes to automating processes to be executed on the devices themselves (AKA: On-box automation).Cisco’s IOS-XE has a feature which allows network admins this capability. It’s our IOS-XE GuestShell.Let’s start by understanding what IOS-XE’s Guestshell feature is all about:
To learn more about our Guestshell capabilities, see this Cisco blog post.
Analysts Love Cisco’s GuestShellRecently, Miercom did a report showcasing our Guestshell:
Well, Huawei has no matching feature for Cisco’s Linux Guestshell in their S5720HI.
Another point about NetConf support for off-box automation
When it comes to off-box automation, NetConf ( an open-standard models protocols) has become highly popular, due to the rise of software and automation in the networking world. This is where the future of the network automation is going…
Let’s see what NetConf is in a nutshell:
As mentioned above, Cisco’s IOS-XE supports NetConf’s standards, which allow customers to automate Cisco devices using any client that can SSH to our devices via NetConf’s port (port 830).
What about the Competition?
And what about Huawei you may ask? While claiming to have NetConf support on their S5720’s, Huawei was not completely clear in their tutorials. In order to use NetConf on their S5720HI’s, customers are required to purchase their Agile controller which will role as the NMS (Network Management System – see the below diagram taken from their public tutorial)
Additionally, they recommend that customers should avoid using CLI based configurations, should they choose to go with NetConf, as it might create inconsistencies in their device’s settings!
With those caveats, Huawei “breaks” the idea of NetConf’s concept with their current support, since it requires a “special care” and more investment from the customers in order to make it work…
But don’t take my word for it. See for yourself. Download the complete Miercom report, click here.
The bottom line is that having the network managed through software makes the network admin’s life much easier. With tools like IOS-XE, and learning resources and sandboxes from DevNet, you have what you need to be the network admin of the future.
HP claims to have put private cloud, hybrid cloud and possibly public cloud in its pocket to sell to enterprises and service providers. But CloudSystem, as it is known, isn't so much a platform as a collection of intersecting HP products and roadmaps to get cloud capabilities -- elastic, self-service provisioning, storage and metered use -- into your data center.
At heart, it's the Cloud Service Automation software that makes or breaks the HP cloud.
There's CloudSystem Matrix, CloudSystem Enterprise, CloudStart Solution, Cloud Service Automation, Cloud Service Delivery, CloudMaps, Cloud Matrix Operating Environment, CloudSystem Security, CloudAgile, and on and on. HP suddenly has a lot of stuff stamped "cloud." What's more, there's no shrink-wrap; you pick bits here and there, and HP helps you install and tune it. Fortunately, there's at least one example in the wild to see what actually constitutes an "HP cloud."
"Yes, they do have an awful lot to look at," said Christian Teeft, VP of engineering for data center operator and services provider Latisys. Teeft said Latisys may well have the first live CloudSystem environment at an HP customer. Latisys is using the system to sell cloud infrastructure services, which come in "private" and "semi-private" options; dedicated clouds for customers, as it were.
Teeft said Latisys deliberately leaned away from startups and smaller cloud platform vendors, talking to enterprise vendors and other service providers like NewScale, Joyent, BMC and others about automation, but HP had the country club marquee customers and Teeft liked the integration with HP's hardware.
"There are synergies with HP around hardware blade systems and ISS," he said.
Industry Standard Server Technology Communications (ISS technology communications) is HP's way of distributing technology guides and techniques to users, a bit like Microsoft's TechNet.
Teeft said cloud computing for enterprise customers was becoming a fairly mainstream request, although actual usage might be exploratory or limited to certain workloads, all new customers wanted to see the capability available.
"It's a checkmark on a lot of RFPs and RFIs these days," he said.
HP also touts the ability of CloudSystem to use external public cloud services. Teeft said he was aware of the ability to do hybrid clouds but that wasn't relevant to him. Latisys' cloud is unequivocally staying high and dry from melding with other services.
"Our workload is going to stay within our four walls for now," he said.
Teeft said CloudSystem had two other key advantages for a service provider. It is hypervisor agnostic, meaning they can serve more than just VMware users, and unlike cloud-in-a-box solutions like the vBlock or Oracle's Exalogic or Cisco's UCS, it can run off a small hardware allotment at first.
"It allowed us to do a unique scale… we didn't have to sink a few million dollars into a vBlock or whatever," he said.
So what exactly is CloudSystem? The central component of CloudSystem is the Cloud Service Automation software, which is based on Opsware. HP is selling three core components: HP Converged Infrastructure (running something called the Matrix Operating Environment), Cloud Service Automation (CSA) and HP's own support services to keep it running.
The Matrix OE is HP Insight, basically, and handles low-level provisioning, monitoring and management for physical and virtual resources. It also helps with network management by hooking into HP Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager (VCEM). Cloud Service Automation is mostly Opsware, which HP acquired in 2007. That provides everything else needed to turn your infrastructure into a cloud -- the user interfaces (and user management), provisioning tools, configuration and workflow tools, and management/monitoring displays -- a front-end resource manager and orchestration tool. It can tap into HP's own Infrastructure as a Service offerings when those come online and with other public cloud services like Amazon Web Services, according to the literature.
HP says that HP blades and 3PAR storage are the hardware component for CloudSystem, but say most x86-based servers and SAN storage can work with the Cloud Service Automation software.
"They also sell that separately, so you can just buy the software solution and put it on your hardware," said Forrester analyst Lauren Nelson, who has spoken to a handful of CloudSystem early adopters.
Nelson said that the CSA cloud platform provides all the necessary components to turn a bunch of servers into something comparable to Amazon Web Services or Rackspace Cloud. The user interface isn't polished, according to Nelson, but the functionality is there; it is on par with products like Eucalyptus, Abiquo and Cloud.com.
"With Abiquo, you can change the color of the interface background, I think," said Nelson.
The reason HP is selling the software separately instead of an exclusive hardware/software bundle is that it wants to please all sides: providers like Latisys, and also the customers who are on the fence about running their own infrastructure or outsourcing. There's a strong impulse in enterprises to do something in the way of private cloud this year, said Nelson, but users want to start small if they possibly can.
HP suddenly has a lot of stuff stamped "cloud."
"If your infrastructure is really behind, you're going to be looking at a hardware/software solution or hosted private cloud," she said. "If you're not quite as worried about the hardware, you might be looking at just the software this year."
HP has a number of additional software enhancements for the base platform, like Tipping Point, which gives some network security, intrusion detection and traffic management features. CloudMaps are templates for the platform based on common enterprise application stacks, HP ArcSight can be used for compliance, HP Storage Essentials and so on. Aggregation Platform for SaaS (AP4SaaS) has billing and templates for Software as a Service providers baked in. All of these are sideshows to the Cloud Service Automation software.
IT giants compete for cloud dominanceNelson said that, right now, only HP and IBM have a complete package to offer enterprises around private cloud, meaning fully integrated hardware and software to run and support it. Dell's partnerships with Joyent and Microsoft (Hyper-V Fast Track) and its own Virtual Infrastructure System (VIS) weren't at the same level, and the pure-play cloud platforms require a lot of work to tune for various kinds of infrastructure. They are also a riskier bet, as the companies have an uncertain future.
HP has put up a big tent for its private cloud products and piled it full of bric-a-brac. At heart, however, it's the Cloud Service Automation software that makes or breaks the HP cloud. Experimenting with and adopting cloud products in house is quickly becoming a reality for many enterprises, and the big vendors are clearly trying to step up to the plate. But if nothing else, this is yet another way to show that cloud computing is not just more of the same old data center operations.

As more than one observer was heard to remark at this year’s Cisco Live Europe customer and partner event at Barcelona’s Fira, which has just closed its doors for another year, the day is fast approaching when everyone will have to stop referring to Cisco as a networking supplier, and start calling it a software company.
The news announcements came thick and fast, and at every turn, they were software-defined. From the extension of its intent-based networking (IBN) platform to the edge of the enterprise to support application innovation around the internet of things (IoT), to the introduction of HyperFlex for Branch, which supports “datacentre-class app performance” in branch offices and remote sites, software is on the march at Cisco, and is now well on its way to becoming firmly established at the core of Cisco’s customers’ networks.
For Susie Wee, founder, executive vice-president and chief technology officer of Cisco’s developer and innovation programme, DevNet, one might argue this makes all the hard work since she set up the scheme in 2014 worthwhile.
“People might ask, why does Cisco have a developer programme?” she says, when she sits down with Computer Weekly during a break in the show’s packed agenda. “Part of it is because there’s a huge shift going on in the industry in which the infrastructure is becoming a programmable software system with APIs [application program interfaces].
“What’s interesting is that that now changes things for the developer community because the way that networking and IT is done changes now you have programmatic capabilities. You can do things like automation at scale, policy-based management, baked-in security, all because you have new software control that you weren’t able to do before,” she says.Rapid growth
Cisco’s engagement with the developer community actually dates back to the early 2000s, when it ran programmes that enabled developers to build customised features for its voice-over-IP (VoIP) phones.
Over time, this morphed and evolved to include other technologies, before Wee – who studied electrical engineering at MIT in the 1990s before spending over 10 years at HP and rising to CTO of Client Cloud Services – established DevNet as an overarching developer programme in 2014.
In the following four years, the DevNet community has grown rapidly, hitting the 500,000 member milestone last summer, and since then it has added another 50,000 members.
“Really, the heroes in this software transition are the community, because training themselves to have the expertise to run, design, build and deploy networks, and then to take the next step to learn about software and the new way of doing things – it’s not easy stuff, you have to really concentrate,” says Wee.
“The community is evolving, we have more people who are coming to learn, literally, coding 101, learning about the APIs. Others are becoming more advanced as well, so our core group is now actually doing pretty sophisticated things, working on policies and automation, not easy problems, but they’re developing and advancing.”Community activity
As Cisco’s community of coders grows, and different specialisms and tiers of ability emerge, Wee has been adding new features to DevNet to encourage more community activity.
Last summer, at Cisco Live in Orlando, Florida, she showed off DevNet Exchange, which comprises two components, DevNet Code Exchange – a list of sample code, adaptors, tools and software development kits (SDKs) created by Cisco and the community – and and DevNet Ecosystem Exchange – an online portal where developers can share or look up apps created for Cisco’s platforms and products.
“How many lines of code a day does the best coder write? Sometimes it’s a couple of hundred, two hundred, three hundred,” says Wee. “Another answer could be zero. Why? Because that coder knows where to find the code.
“More and more people in our community are starting to share the code that they have written, and so now that the community has hit critical mass, what we have done is curated the code.
“Developers can now submit code to DevNet, and we’ll look at it and approve it and say, yep, this is good code, we recommend it to our community to use it, put it on Code Exchange and point other people towards it. What’s cool is that our community is now evolving, giving back, using our tools and posting their code.”
For example, Joel King of World Wide Technology, a large US Cisco partner, contributed to Code Exchange explaining how to use Ansible to interface to Cisco’s Tetration platform, which provides holistic workload protection in multi-cloud datacentre environments.
King’s repository comprises an Ansible module that retrieves enforcement policy from Tetration and exposes it to an Ansible playbook as variables. This means that the playbook can subsequently apply the policy to network device configuration.
Posting code to Code Exchange does carry a number of requirements, such as providing the right type of open source licensing to ensure other people can actually use what you have written, and other “reasonable things around how you’d want code, specifically shared code, to work”, says Wee.
“But we don’t force the developers because we are taking an open source approach. If something gets really outdated then the community will speak for itself – they’ll stop using it, or they could help it. We’ll keep track of versioning and what works with what and make sure that what is in the Cisco curated list works, but if something becomes out of date then we would take it off and we’ll work with the community on how this comes along.”
For Wee, the very act of uploading, or downloading, code from somewhere like GitHub – to which DevNet Code Exchange ultimately points out – serves the interests of the developer community because it makes you, in her words “a different person”.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re the best coder – you’ve started to think differently, you’ve started to understand how to use the community, you’re not just keeping everything internal, and everything else can grow from there,” she says.Ready-made products
Meanwhile, Ecosystem Exchange is where DevNet lists qualifying independent software vendor (ISV) solutions so that others can take advantage of fully realised vertical applications that work with Cisco’s products. In the past six months alone, it has added over 100 new solution listings, says Wee.
One of these was created by Eximprod, a Romania-based technology company that provides vertically-focused products and services to electrical utilities.
It released its ES200 product through DevNet Ecosystem Exchange as part of its core work to modernise energy services by improving the security and reliability of electrical grids.
The ES200 comprises a virtualised IoT supervisory control and data acquisition (Scada) remote terminal unit (RTU) gateway for control, measurement and supervision in power distribution, which operates substations and feeders more efficiently using modern, secure automation and communication standards, saving time and money on device and maintenance upgrades.A part of Cisco, distinct from Cisco
Perhaps part of the success DevNet is seeing at the moment stems from the fact that while it is a part of Cisco, it is allowed a certain amount of freedom to operate distinctly from the wider organisation.
Wee explains: “The approach we have taken is that we’re trying to enable the ecosystem and ensure it is successful, meaning my mandate is not necessarily to sell more Cisco product – although of course we do want that to happen.
“Of course we get people to use our APIs and show them how to use this programmability, but I’m actually focused on making our partners, ISVs and customers successful, and our stuff will come along later,” she says.
To this end, DevNet extends across Cisco’s entire product portfolio, from those parts of the business that are currently generating column inches, like IoT applications for manufacturing, to those more traditional elements of the business that make up for in utility what they may lack in “We’re really the enabler of this broader Cisco ecosystem,” says Wee.
