Hewlett-Packard has scrapped the StorageWorks SAN Virtualization capabilities Platform (SVSP) that it bought through an oem contend with LSI, as well as the EVA Cluster SAN gadget that used the SVSP to cluster two EVAs.
in accordance with an e mail statement from director of HP storage advertising Craig Nunes, HP notified purchasers final November that it could discontinue building of the SVSP and it stopped promoting the EVA Cluster on the conclusion of closing year. Nunes stated HP would assist SVSP customers’ carrier contracts for five years.
HP turned into LSI’s only most important customer for the SVSP, and closing week LSI closed the Israel office the place SVSP changed into developed (LSI got the expertise from StorAge Networking in 2006). As EMC has found with Invista, no market ever developed for change-primarily based storage virtualization application.
HP launched EVA Cluster remaining June, months before it got 3PAR for $2.35 billion. Nunes said 3PAR’s storage platform will exchange EVA Cluster available on the market, however he insisted that the normal EVA platform is alive and neatly.
“The EVA Cluster changed into a stand-on my own product and its discontinuation has no pertaining to future EVA investment and roadmap,” Nunes spoke of in the remark. “The EVA Cluster up to now filled a need in our portfolio for Fibre Channel clustered storage arrays that we now tackle with our newly-acquired 3PAR Utility Arrays.”
in keeping with a narrative in the Wall road Journal over the weekend, storage is one enviornment – together with application and networking — that new HP CEO Leo Apotheker wants to focal point on. There have also been whispers in the industry that HP will cut all of its storage OEM offers and focus on constructing all of its storage in-condominium or via acquisitions. different OEM partners encompass Hitachi for HP’s HP StorageWorks P9500 Disk Array enterprise storage equipment and Sepaton for its digital tape libraries (VTLs).
Nunes would no longer touch upon HP’s different OEM offers.
Hewlett-Packard has prolonged its plans in the NAS market with the acquisition of o.e.m companion and clustered file gadget seller PolyServe. financial details of the acquisition had been not disclosed.HP entered into an o.e.m partnership with PolyServe in 2005 and has been selling PolyServe’s know-how with the StorageWorks EFS Clustered Gateway, a midrange NAS gateway comprising a ProLiant Storage Server and Clustered File device application and the StorageWorks EVA-File features (EVA FS), a virtualization package that serves each block and file information.
HP has made inroads within the entry-stage NAS market over the last few years, but the company has its points of interest set on greater valued clientele. Bob Schultz, senior vp and common manager of HP’s StorageWorks Division, says the acquisition offers a robust entry point for HP into the growing enterprise NAS market and should also allow the company to prolong its NAS expertise to blade servers.
“PolyServe’s technology enhances our StorageWorks, ProLiant, and BladeSystem groups,” says Schultz.
PolyServe’s Utilities for Databases and File Serving application works with industry-ordinary hardware to consolidate and virtualize NAS in Linux or windows environments. With the application, assistance from file or database servers may also be consolidated into a single, shared pool of storage. The software additionally provides a single equipment graphic that allows for directors to manipulate all nodes in a cluster as in the event that they had been one equipment.
enterprise method group analyst Brian Garrett doubts the PolyServe acquisition will influence in many alterations to HP’s NAS product line.
“individually, the PolyServe deal doesn’t vastly exchange HP’s presence or choices within the NAS market,” says Garrett. “They already OEM PolyServe application for servers within the mid-market, and on the excessive-conclusion they lead with the Scalable File Share [SFS] product.”
Garrett says that PolyServe-enabled NAS programs may theoretically encroach on SFS over time, but that the application is presently missing some “desk-stake high-end NAS facets,” and it has a file system dimension limit of 16TB. “Taken at the side of the undeniable fact that HP has plenty invested in [SFS], I doubt that the PolyServe deal will vastly trade the HP NAS product lineup within the close future,” says Garrett.
Following finalization of the deal, PolyServe will turn into a part of the StorageWorks division in HP’s expertise options community.
PolyServe touts an inventory of partners, including Dell, IBM, Microsoft, Novell, red Hat, and others, however HP declined to touch upon even if these relationships will are living on as soon as the acquisition is accomplished.
Beaverton, OR-primarily based PolyServe is a private company with approximately 117 employees and 500 customers.

The Hewlett-Packard Network Storage Solutions organization made its first post-merger product announcements to its StorageWorks family of storage solutions. Announced were enhancements to the Enterprise Virtual Array, a new model of the VA Series, enhancements to StorageWorks Enterprise Volume Manager and Secure Path software, additions to its Fibre Channel switch family, a new entry-level NAS product and new SDLT and LTO tape products.
The Enterprise Virtual Array Version 2 was introduced featuring increased capacity (17.5 TB), extended platform support, 2 Gbps Fibre Channel support (host and device), and enhancements to its duplication software (Vsnap and Snapclone). Hewlett-Packard has integrated the Vixel InSpeed Model 310 Embedded Storage Switch into the device architecture of the EVA V2. Also introduced was a new model of the HP VA Series, the Model 7410. The VA 7410 offers performance improvements and extended OS support.
Two new 2 Gbps Fibre Channel switches were introduced; the HP StorageWorks Edge Switches 2/16 and 2/32. (OEM products from McDATA Corporation) (Note: We had initially reported that the new switch offerings were sourced from Brocade. This was an error. The switches are sourced from McDATA Corporation.) These switches join the StorageWorks family of Fibre Channel switches (the HP StorageWorks Core Switch 2/64 and the HP StorageWorks Director 2/64).
The HP StorageWorks Enterprise Volume Manager, Version 2.0D was introduced featuring additional functionality of replicated volumes and full exploitation of EVA Snapclones and Vsnaps. The HP StorageWorks Secure Path has been enhanced with broader device support and increased OS support.
The HP StorageWorks Nearline family was enhanced with the introduction of the StorageWorks SDLT 160/320 GB tape drive, AIT 35 GB autoloader, and the StorageWorks network storage routers e1200 and e2400. Nearline support for ProLiant servers was enhanced with the introduction of the StorageWorks LTO Ultrium 100/200 GB tape drive and the StorageWorks DLT 40/80 GB tape drive.
Enterprise Virtual Array Version 2 highlights
The EVA V2 has incorporated new hardware in its device interface with the integration of the Vixel InSpeed Model 310 Embedded Storage Switch. Additionally, the connectivity has been enhanced with support for the new 2 Gbps switches and director. New 2 Gbps HBAs are available supporting Windows (PCI), Open VMS, Tru64 Unix (PCI), Sun Solaris (PCI), and HP-UX (PCI). Disk drive support has been expanded to include a 36GB, 15K rpm drive.
The data replication features of the EVA V2 have been enhanced. The maximum number of LUNs supported has been increased to 8,192 and up to seven snapshots/Vsnaps can be made per virtual LUN. Additionally the Snapclone can now be executed across disk groups. The Version 2 was available on July 26, 2002. Upgrades to current Version 1 models will be available in September.
Evaluator Group note:
The initial evaluation of the Vixel Embedded Switch was conducted between Vixel and Compaq. With the merger of Hewlett-Packard and Compaq, the InSpeed technology will be shipping as part of the common storage platform offered by both companies. HP stated that with the addition of the InSpeed Embedded Switch, the performance and serviceability of the EVA have been significantly enhanced. It is our speculation that the integration of the InSpeed technology will also decrease the product costs of the EVA.

Evaluator Group comments:
We expected HPQ to integrate the Vixel technology into its EVA product family however not this quickly. HPQ has quickly embraced the technology and brought this enhancement to market in record time. The exceptional performance of the EVA should be improved plus HPQ has improved the overall serviceability of the product. An excellent storage subsystem has been further improved. The benefits of a back-end switched topology are significant; linear scalability, improved RAS and a reduction in overall product costs. We believe all the major SAN and NAS suppliers will be incorporating switched back-end topologies in the future.
VA 7410 highlights
The HP Virtual Array 7000 series are second-generation virtual architectures based on a log-structured file system in conjunction with dynamic data redundancy management. The Model VA7410 offers increased performance and additional platform support. The Virtual Array Model 7410, like the Model 7400, is a Fibre Channel (2 Gbps) storage array supporting up to 105 disk drives. The Model 7410 has been architected to operate in a heterogeneous SAN environment. Any combination of the following operating systems can be supported simultaneously: HP-UX, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Linux, AIX, and Solaris. (HPQ stated that NetWare and MPE/iX will be added in the near future.) HP gave the following performance figures for the Model 7410: 440 MB/sec sequential and greater than 40K IO/sec.
Evaluator Group note:
Based on the Hewlett-Packard array roadmap, the VA Series is intended primarily for HP platforms and the EVA is its primary array for heterogeneous SAN attachment. The enhancements are evolutionary and do not signal a change in HP's array strategy. The VA Series is still intended primarily for HP platforms but can now be used in HP accounts where other application servers are present. We can expect a new midrange array, based on EVA technology, that will eventually bring the VA Series to EOL.
Eval Group comments:
This series of announcements from HP StorageWorks are in line with their product roadmaps and are all welcomed additions to its storage networking products and solutions. The VA Model 7410 now offers heterogeneous support and increased performance.
Of most significance are the changes to the Enterprise Virtual Array. The integration of the Vixel 310 Blade improves an excellent hardware platform. The enhancements to the EVA replication software are excellent additions to the management capabilities. The strength of the EVA platform is its management. The management aggregation, allowing multiple virtual arrays to be viewed as a single storage pool, allows the virtual array pool to grow linearly in capacity and performance while managed as a single entity. HP now offers multiple SAN consolidation solutions; the EVA, HP SANLink (StorageApps symmetrical pooling), the XP Series with associated software and in the future they have promised the VersaStor technology. We expect HP to consolidate its solutions in the future.

An undocumented administrative account with a default password was discovered in the HP StorageWorks P2000 G3 MSA network storage solution, putting all such devices at risk of unauthorized access.
This model normally comes with an account called "manage" (password "!manage") for customers to customize and use.
However, it was discovered that a default account called "admin" with password "!admin" also exists on the device and, according to the H Security, it doesn't appear in the user manager and cannot be deleted.
The "admin" user has permissions to modify the equipment's settings or the operating system and given that most people don't know of its presence, it puts devices at risk.
HP confirmed the problem and said that this service administrator account "has necessary privileges that are used by internal processes running on the array."
Fortunately, it looks like the password can be modified. "If the 'admin' account raises a security concern, [it's] password can be modified by using the Command Line Interface (CLI), through telnet or SSH, to change the default password," the company wrote in an advisory.
This is pretty straightforward and involves issuing the "set password" command after logging in as "admin" via the command line.
"The practice of embedding hardcoded passwords, as demonstrated in this most recent HP storage device example, is not only commonplace, but extremely risky," Shlomi Dinoor, vice president of emerging technologies at identity management solutions provider Cyber-Ark Software, told SecurityWeek.
"So too is the practice of attempting to ship systems with 'hidden' admin users, but in this age of openness, nothing is hidden, and vendors should know that," he added.
One example of how things can go wrong when implementing default hidden passwords is the notorious Stuxnet industrial espionage worm, which makes use of a hardcoded access code to read information from the database of Siemens WinCC SCADA systems.
Resells MS DPM for ‘near CDP’
At last month’s Storage Networking World Europe (SNW-E) trade show, Hewlett-Packard announced a slew of new data-protection and archiving products and services, many of which are based on products from OEM partners. Three of the more significant product announcements are in the data-protection category and two are in the archiving space.
The HP ProLiant DL 100 G2 and DL 380 G4 Data Protection Storage Server (DPSS) NAS appliances are powered by Microsoft’s System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) and Windows Storage Server 2003 software. Microsoft’s DPM disk-based backup/recovery software is referred to as “near continuous data protection” (see “Microsoft enters D2D backup market,” InfoStor, August 2005, p. 1). HP claims that these disk-based backup/recovery platforms can reduce the risk of data loss by 96% and boost restore speeds by as much as 90% compared to traditional tape-based approaches.
Microsoft’s DPM competes with Veritas/Symantec’s recently released “Panther” CDP software (see “Symantec joins growing CDP field,” p. 1). DPM also competes to a degree with CDP products from vendors such as FalconStor, IBM (see “IBM delivers file-based CDP,” p. 1), InMage, Kashya, Lasso Logic, LiveVault, Mendocino Software, Mimosa Systems, Revivio, StoneFly Networks, Storactive, TimeSpring, and XOsoft.
Also at SNW-Europe, Hewlett-Packard introduced the StorageWorks 6840 Virtual Library System (VLS), which extends the capacity and performance of the HP 6000 VLS family.
The 6840 VLS provides a capacity of 40TB, compared to 10TB previously, and boosts performance by 40% to 575MBps. The VLS systems are virtual tape library (VTL) platforms, which emulate tape drives/libraries, based on technology from Sepaton.
HP also announced its Electronic Vaulting Services for Enterprises, which is based on Asigra’s Televaulting software and provides automated backup and vaulting to remote sites or HP data centers (vaults). The service is agent-less, but requires an appliance in the customer’s production environment that collects data based on user-defined policies. The vaulting service uses “single-instance store” technology to avoid duplication of data, and compresses and encrypts the data. Electronic Vaulting Services for Enterprises supports multi-vendor environments, as well as Windows, Linux, Unix, NetWare, and AS400 platforms.
HP’s StorageWorks File Migration Agent (FMA) allows users to move inactive data to a choice of cost-effective storage targets-including HP’s Reference Information Storage System (RISS), File System Extender (FSE), NAS, or tape devices-in a tiered storage infrastructure for information life-cycle management (ILM).
HP also announced the StorageWorks Reference Information Manager (RIM) for Database Archiving solution, which integrates OuterBay Technologies’ Application Data Management (ADM) database archiving software and uses ILM policies to automatically move database information to and from archived databases. Targeted databases include Oracle and SAP, but other databases are on the road map, too.
Other enhancements and upgrades designed to bolster HP’s data-protection and archiving portfolio include HP Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS), OpenView Storage Data Protector 5.5, StorageWorks Exchange 2003 Replication for HP EVA, StorageWorks Rapid Backup and Restore for the mySAP Business Suite, StorageWorks Replication Solutions Manager, and the Medical Archiving Solution.
Commenting on HP’s decision to launch a slew of products at once, instead of rolling them out one by one, Arun Taneja, consulting analyst and founder of the Taneja Group, says, “HP has lost momentum over the last two years to EMC and Network Appliance, and it needs to do something drastic to send a message that it’s back in the game. Announcing one or two products at a time won’t work.
“HP has been filling in many gaping holes in areas such as e-mail archiving,” Taneja continues. “It has a solid platform in RISS, which is now being presented more as a direct competitor to EMC’s Centera. For structured data, HP has the OuterBay solution, and it also has strong solutions for compliance. HP can now start competing effectively against IBM and EMC.”
