The new E5-2600 v3 processors are available with up to 18 cores and offer a theoretical performance improvement of up to three times per Watt over Gen8 ProLiant servers. HP’s latest 12Gb/s Smart Array Controllers and PCIe accelerators are also available for the DL360 Gen9. Unlike its DL360p Gen8 predecessor, the DL360 Gen9 supports GPUs: up to two single-wide and active cards up to 9.5 inches in length.
The unit being benchmarked during this review utilizes the 1U DL360 chassis with eight SFF drive bays and is configured with two Intel Xeon E5-2697 v3 2.6GHz processors, 256GB DDR4 RAM (16 DIMMs of 16GB 2Rx4 PC4-2133) and five SFF 400GB SAS SSDs. Paired with our all flash array, the DL360's 10GbE card is able to sustain 253,984IOPS for read operations and 300,743IOPS for write operations.
The internal RAID10 volume experienced an average latency of just 1.05ms for read operations with 6.24ms for write operations. The 10GbE interface was able to keep its 4k average latency to 10.1ms for read operations with the all flash array and 0.85ms for write operations.
The DL360 Gen9 hit a maximum latency of 86.6ms during random 4k read operations, while the maximum latency for 4k write operations was only somewhat higher at 112.3ms. The DL360's 10GbE network interface kept its maximum 4k read latency to 60.9ms and maximum write latency to 28.4ms when we tested it with the all-flash array.
Standard deviation results reveal that there was a greater variation in latency results for 4k write operations with the RAID10 SSD volume, which is consistent with the 4k results up to here.
After reconditioning the server and all flash array for sequential 8k transfers, we measured throughput with a load of 16 threads and a queue depth of 16 for 100% read and 100% write operations. The DL360 Gen9's internal RAID10 storage hit 147,178IOPS for sequential read operations along with a score of 36,786IOPS for write operations. The 10GbE interface and the all flash array were able to reach 159,158IOPS for read operations and 217,183IOPS for write operations.
The next results are derived from a protocol composed of random 70% read operations and 30% write operations with an 8k workload across a range of thread and queue counts. The DL360 Gen9 with an internal RAID10 volume experienced no unexpectedly difficult combinations of thread count and queue depth. The RAID10 volume's throughput appears to be approaching its maximum at 75,147IOPS with a thread count of 16 and a queue depth of 8. Throughput to the all flash array via the 10GbE interface at 16 threads and a queue depth of 16 hits 218,801IOPS.
During the first few workload iterations of the 8k 70/30 benchmark, the 10GbE all flash array configuration kept its average latencies near the theoretical minimum of this configuration at approximately 0.23ms. Neither configuration experienced any unexpected trouble spots in terms of average latency during this protocol.
The internal RAID10 volume experienced a few notable maximum latency spikes for workloads with a heavy queue depth. During the heaviest 8k 70/30 workload the network interface benchmark hit a latency spike which interrupted that configuration's otherwise consistent maximum latency scores.
The standard deviation plots for the 8k 70/30 benchmark also reflect the larger maximum latencies experienced by the RAID10 configuration with large queues. Standard deviation calculations show how the RAID10 array has its most trouble producing consistent latency at the top end of the workloads.
Our final synthetic benchmark is based on sequential 128k transfers with 100% read and 100% write operations. The ProLiant DL360 Gen9's internal RAID10 volume is able to sustain 1,678,541KB/s for read operations and 637,581KB/s for write operations. Our benchmark of the DL360 Gen9's optional dual-10GbE network interface maxed out the protocol at 2,311,475KB/s for read operations and 2,310,042KB/s for write operations.
The HP ProLiant DL360 Gen9 has the engineering to serve as a useful component in a converged enterprise or data center architecture in conjunction with HP's OneView platform and the company's other innovations in management that makes coordinating hundreds or thousands of servers easy. In our configuration with five "legacy" SanDisk Pliant-based SAS2 SLC-based SSDs, we saw what we'd expect in regards to proven and stable performance. In addition to strong performance from its internal storage, the availability of high performance 10GbE interfaces means that the DL360 Gen9 can be placed in front of high-speed storage arrays in order to drive huge IO with minimal network-induced latency and fewer cables. In many installations where the DL360 will find itself, load generation against performance storage will be a popular use case. In our testing we paired the DL360 Gen9 with a Windows Server 2012 R2-based all flash array and saw numbers that easily saturated the twin-10GbE connectivity. We drove strong mixed workload I/O, topping 218kIOPS 8k 70/30 random, as well as over 2.3GB/s large-block sequential. Since this leveraged the internal FlexibleLOM slot, we were able to leave all of the additional PCIe slots open for future expansion.

“ARM has become ready for enterprise datacentres,” said Olivier Frank, HP Moonshot director for Europe. “Customers have been asking HP for a low-power server option and so we have expanded our Moonshot portfolio with ARM-based servers.”
For specific workloads, the ARM architecture optimises a customer’s most critical compute requirement – balanced memory at a lower total cost of ownership.
The new HP Moonshot ARM-based systems will deliver hyperscale, datacentre environments to help customers improve application performance, drive business innovation and deliver breakthrough datacentre economics, according to the server maker.
Frank said the company is investing in ARM technologies for designing production-ready datacentre offerings because it hopes that, in two to three years, ARM will hold between 20 to 30% of the server industry based on industry analyst forecasts.
“It is important to provide a choice so there is no monopolistic market,” he said. “We cannot ignore the growth of ARM-based, end-point devices, which has direct consequences on the datacentre side. ARM architecture is valuable in terms of density and power-efficiency.”
HP’s ARM architecture-based Moonshot servers come just days after the company's server rival Dell said it too is considering working with the Cambridge-based energy-efficient chipmaker. Michael Dell, founder of Dell, told delegates at its Solutions Summit earlier this month that the company may work with Cambridge-based microprocessor firm ARM for its mainstream servers.
Dell said: “If ARM works, really works, and costs less, we will use ARM. As it moves to 64-bit architecture, it becomes more interesting.”
At the Open Compute Summit in San Jose, California, ARM launched a baseline standard for 64-bit servers, which it hoped will help it encroach on Intel’s traditional territory, powering commodity hardware in the datacentre.
The standard also has the backing of the Linaro Enterprise Group, a consortium of companies supporting the development of open-source software for the ARM architecture, including Facebook and Samsung.
HP, which has a long-standing partnership with high-power, high-throughput x86 provider Intel, has previously released both Intel and AMD-based Moonshot servers. Intel’s low-power offering laptop chip Atom has been used to power the HP low-powered Moonshot server. It is an x86-compatible design, which means it should be capable of running 32-bit server software.
But chipmaker ARM’s work with AMD to deliver SoC processors designed for a new generation of servers and to tackle the biggest problem facing today's datacentres – power and cooling – is making ARM a viable alternative to Intel chips.
Frank said that, as more and more end-point devices such as smartphones and tablets are powered by ARM, it is important to have back-end server hardware based on similar energy-efficient system-on-a-chip SoC technology for maximum efficiencies.
By leveraging energy-efficient system-on-a-chip SoC technology, a dense, converged form-factor and highly flexible fabrics, HP Moonshot can provide high-speed connectivity between cartridges, as well as balanced computing with maximum throughput and memory to improve performance and efficiency, said Frank.
“ARM technologies will change the dynamics of how enterprises build IT solutions to quickly address customer challenges,” said Antonio Neri, senior vice president and general manager, Servers and Networking, HP.
HP is targeting specific workloads such as web caching and has been beta-testing the low-powered Moonshot servers with several users including PayPal and ARM itself.
“We are working with our partner ARM as our end-user testing the new Moonshot servers for its manageability, scalability and portability,” said Frank
PayPal is another customer using the HP ProLiant m800 in its Systems Intelligence project. “Paypal does real-time data analytics, high-performance computing and web caching – all apt use cases for low-powered servers, Frank said.
“The HP ProLiant m800’s combination of ARM and Multicore Digital Signal Processors [DSP] with high-speed, low-latency networking and tiered memory management creates a very energy-efficient, extremely capable parallel processing platform with a familiar Linux interface,” said Ryan Quick, principal architect, Advanced Technology Group, PayPal.
“It’s a truly new approach to bringing scale-out design 'inside the box', and breaks barriers between high performance computing and enterprise technology.”
The extension of Moonshot portfolio with ARM architecture addresses IT demands with a vast pool of processing resources that can be located anywhere, scaled to any workload and available at any time, according to HP.
As power usage of datacentre products is increasingly becoming a priority for enterprises, micro-servers could become more than a device to fill the gap between PCs and servers, experts said.
“Intel shouldn’t be complacent because competitive architecture is very credible and giants such as Google will experiment with the alternative architectures powered by ARM,” according to Gartner analyst Errol Rasit.
The new Moonshot servers are available immediately and pricing will vary based on model and customer configurations.
HP is also extending the reach of the growing ARM ecosystem. The HP ProLiant Moonshot ARM-64 Developer Program, part of the HP AllianceOne program, will enable developers to test and port code stacks and solutions to the ARM architecture. Through this programme, developers can design fully-featured software on an ARM 64-bit system by remotely accessing the Moonshot discovery lab.

The Proliant has actual industrial beauty and there’s even a choice of different colored front bezels. And the Proliant Microserver has a reasonable amount of speed. As we're prone to lifting and heaving 80-pound monstrosities into large racks, we wondered how could this comparatively tiny appliance be useful?
The MicroServer G8 has an Intel i3 chipset, which can be found on discounted notebooks, as the i7 and soon Haswell chipset currently rules the state-of-the-art roosts. On the plus side, the unit we were sent had nearly 2Tbytes of fast disk, lots of memory, an OEM version of Windows Server 2012.
Bottom line: It's a small, fast, server.
The engineers at Apple once made servers that were fast and beautiful. Windows-based whitebox servers were rectangular boxes with aesthetics so awful that they were tucked away from wincing eyes. The MicroServer Gen8 is a box that would look fine in an art gallery.
iLO management app
HP put the same iLO management app (v4.5) into the BIOS of the MicroServer Gen8 that they put in their most powerful servers. Booting this beast is about a five-minute process, should everything behave. This does not count the load time for Windows Server 2012, which takes another minute or so.
Our patience was rewarded in the following way: iLO allows the machine to be remotely deployed, monitored, reconfigured and administrated from another site, perhaps a value-added reseller, corporate systems deployment engineer, and so forth.
A civilian unboxing the Microserver G8 has precious little to do, in terms of assembly. Once installed physically, an end user has a reasonable chance (if they can find the local broadband connection) of making the unit connect to the point where someone else — now connected to the server via the Internet -- can likely login and take control.
The iLO software included runs in realtime, so it can be checked as a process-within-the-server-frame. Application deployments and other day-to-day software switches can be flipped to automate backups, get notices about errors, set and reset user and access policies. The minutae of day-to-day admin work can be done remotely through Windows 2012 (or Linux, which we did not test).
The entire server comes apart with included tools. Nothing special is required to change out nearly all parts. Spilled a pitcher of ice tea on the unit? With luck, a rapid diagnosis can be made and parts that are user installable as replacements can be shipped out overnight. They're all modular and the tool needed is attached to the back of the machine as shipped. Cost of a remote deployment should be reduced, as a result.
This very fact goes against the grain of every notebook we've seen in the past five years. Except for changing memory, perhaps the disk, and with luck, the keyboard, they're all proprietary and finding the parts for notebooks can be a genuine chore in our experience (this means you, Toshiba). The modularity of the Microserver G8, and the lack of bizarre Torx screw sizes and obtuse hold-it-like-this-to-remove instructions thrilled us.
HP pairs the Microserver with an eight-port Gigabit Ethernet switch that's handily a part of the iLO information train. What we didn't like about the switch is that it can't be simply bolted or connected to the hardware that is the server. There can be eight or more cables running from the back of the switch, and the chances of something catching a cable and doing something to make the switch a flying object would have been helpful. We suggest two strips of Velcro are a good start. It's just too easy to make the server's connectivity into an OSHA problem.
From a performance perspective, we took a 1.2TB data set and transferred it over Gigabit Ethernet using a CIFS share. The drives in the Microserver G8 go like blazes. We clocked about 12M bytes per second with much CPU and disk channel time to spare, according to the performance sets we monitored through Windows Server 2012. We received five user CALs with 2012; HP says more are available. We wondered why just five, but there will be many possible deployment configurations available for this server.
We then asked, why is the older i3 Intel chipset used? HP responds that there's an AMD version available, but they'll be deployed in different markets where one or the other or both processors might be available. Stronger CPUs, an HP spokesperson said, might mean that the unit would require more and stronger fans, and additionally complicate user servicing. We did note that the unit is extraordinarily quiet. As the noise level in our test lab is overwhelming during some tests, it was nice to note that the level was hushed and notebook like, rather than our memory of Apple's Xserve servers, which were loud enough to makes us wonder about the ear protection worn by airline ramp agents.
The HP Proliant Microserver G8 thrilled us with its aesthetics, made us wonder about the trade-offs between quiet and processor speed, and concerned us with potential cable management problems. It has reasonable value, we feel, for a “corporate-edition” server, and those familiar with Windows 2012 and HP's iLO will enjoy the potential utility offered.
How We Tested HP MicroServer Gen8
We used the HP MicroServer Gen8 and switch on a Gigabit Ethernet network in our lab that consists of several Dell, Lenovo, HP and Apple servers. In turn, the Gigabit Ethernet network is connected to a Comcast Business Network via an ancient and ugly SMC cable modem. We accessed the MicroServer with Microsoft RDS and LogMeIn from Lenovo ThinkPad T520 and T530 notebooks.
