Customizing the HP community Node manager from the GUI | Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

Customizing the ovw GUI is each bendy and straightforward. Many customizations, such as adding submap backgrounds, computerized design of symbols, image hiding, and creation of executable symbols, will also be executed from inside the ovw GUI. This chapter will demonstrate you how.

This chapter is from the booklet 

One compelling point of NNM is that the administrator can personalize submaps from inside the GUI. one of the crucial customizations encompass adding background pictures, saving window placement, hiding symbols, and developing MIB applications. while advanced customizations require file modifying, NNM provides the flexibility to present both elementary and advanced customizations devoid of source code amendment and re-compilation. in fact, many changes can also be made on the fly without exiting the NNM GUI or restarting techniques.

Sealey Inc. has a requirement to be in a position to make use of geographical bitmaps and consumer flooring plans. they'd like to area definite instruments in a particular area representing the actual locations of the instruments. definite contraptions are mission critical and they would want to configure the GUI with brief entry to those devices. however, as a result of every operator has distinctive duties, they trust distinctive instruments to be mission vital. hence, each operator may also desire a a little different view of the community.

Sealey Inc. would additionally like to be in a position to graph SNMP MIB statistics real-time. definite operators may additionally generally be required to access facts from the same MIB variables. The network application should still give the capability to conveniently graph MIB facts. This chapter particulars customizing NNM from the GUI.

Submaps may well be customized on a per-map basis to allow every NNM consumer to focal point on specific needs. as an example, a specific person may want to see the methods placed geographically on a submap based on the region in which the programs bodily dwell. A person could also need to create customized icons as a way to launch often used applications. here sections include one of the crucial general map customizations.

6.1.1 setting the Default Map and residential Submap

The person default map is the map it really is open when a person begins the NNM GUI. If the specification of the default map isn't modified, the map named "default" could be opened. The administrator can create as many maps as fundamental, restrained handiest by disk house. [1] often speakme, remember to certainly not make customizations to the default map. an improved observe can be to make a duplicate of the default map, saving it under a new identify. Customizations should then be made to this new map. After making customizations to a map (similar to heritage pix, auto-design, and so on), you may are looking to set this map as your user default map. The user can set his default map by performing here:

  • select from the menu bar Map→Open. .

  • opt for the map you would really like as your default (see figure 6-1).

06fig01.jpgfigure 6-1 choose Map→Open from the menu bar to set the user default map. choose the map identify and click the [Set User Default] button. The user Default Map shown here is the map named "default."

  • click the [Set User Default] button.

  • When a map is opened, the primary submap to be displayed is the domestic submap. The home submap is additionally with ease purchasable by way of choosing the "condo" icon on the toolbar. through default, the home submap is set to the root submap. The domestic submap may still be set to the submap you entry most often. every map might also have a unique domestic submap. To set the home submap, navigate to your favorite submap and choose from the menubar Map→Submap→Set This Submap as home.

that you could now use the toolbar icon to return to the domestic submap at any time. A user may also have as many maps as preferred and every map can have a different domestic submap.

Unused maps start to comprise stale topology records because the NNM topology database is updated over time. Even when ovtopofix and ovw –mapcount are run, you can also stumble upon mistakes, corresponding to "objects nevertheless in four maps." in order to appropriate this error, each and every map have to be opened so that it synchronizes the existing topology information into the map. each and every map can either be opened personally or with a script run as root on the NNM server, reckoning on the variety of maps you should open to synchronize.

do not open maps in NNM that are created with the aid of OVO! here illustration "greps out" two default OVO maps:

    export display=displayhostname:0.0 for map in 'ovwls –x | egrep –v "opcadm|opcop" ` do ovw –map $map & accomplished

check to be sure that every map turned into opened with read/write privileges. The map will no longer synchronize with out being opened with read/write privileges. After the synchronization of the maps, run ovw –mapcount. This should still run without blunders.

6.1.2 Submap Overlay, Window Geometry, and image Hiding

Many customizations could be made to a map, including the conduct of the submap overlay. by way of default, in the event you drill down via a map's hierarchy by using double clicking, the infant submap of the selected object replaces the latest submap. [2] Likewise, in the event you click on the up arrow icon from the toolbar, the mother or father submap of the present submap replaces the infant. This prevents the consumer from having too many open submaps. in case you decide on now not to have this submap overlay function became on, that you can regulate this behavior on each a map and a submap foundation by way of opting for from the menu bar

a different user customization is the skill to retailer window dimension and placement. as an instance, if you opt for the IP web submap on the left facet of your display screen and a specific node-level submap on the correct side, comfortably regulate the submap overlay to open diverse submaps, organize the submap measurement and site to your liking, and shop the window geometry by making a choice on View→Window Geometry→retailer For All Open Submaps.

extra customizations can be made for personal preferences. now not all NNM clients wish to see the equal view of the network. for example, a community manager might also never wish to see individual workstations or servers. by using hiding symbols that you can alleviate unwanted clutter from her view of the network. Hidden objects are nonetheless actively polled however their popularity usually are not reflected on the maps during which they're hidden. If the community supervisor hides non-networking gadgets, she will no longer see when hidden instruments are down via conveniently glancing on the acceptable submap. despite the fact, hiding a device does not evade the Node Down experience from being despatched to the Alarm Browser.

To conceal symbols, first choose them [3] after which opt for from the menu bar View→Hidden Objects→conceal chosen From This Submap.

The fame line on the backside of every submap displays the variety of hidden objects on the current submap, as shown in determine 6-2. You may also have a necessity to hide a selected class of object. for example, you may additionally are looking to cover all home windows systems because they are all DHCP gadgets that appear to head down commonly. comply with these steps to conceal all systems that have a common attribute such as the working device:

  • search for the item through the attribute.

    Edit→locate→Object through image class. .

  • opt for desktop classification home windows NT subclass and click the [Apply] button.

  • Double-click on some of the items listed below the "observed and Highlighted" section.

  • choose the items that were found.

    View→Highlights→opt for Highlighted

  • conceal the objects that were chosen.

View→Hidden Objects→disguise chosen From This Submap

  • Hidden objects can be unhidden at any time by using selecting

View→Hidden Objects→show Hidden On This Submap

  • don't forget that the submap hierarchy is

  • 06fig02.jpgfigure 6-2 The popularity line shows the map identify (default), the access mode (study-Write), the variety of hidden symbols (Hidden:8), and whether Auto-design is enabled.

notice that the list includes the phase submap (objects) in addition to node submaps. To greater at once and without difficulty hide the desired objects (in this case, home windows NT nodes) we may still concentrate on the phase submaps. in case you double-click on one of these, you are presented with the acceptable infant submap which has all NT nodes "highlighted' (highlighted labels are displayed in reverse video).

whereas hiding objects is a method to contend with undesirable instruments, filtering is a more based system of coping with "undesirable" objects. A filter can be applied to on a per-map basis, which hides objects from the view whereas permitting them to exist within the object database and be actively polled. This class of filter is referred to as a map filter. while the outcome of making use of a map filter is akin to hiding objects, the implementation is constantly an awful lot faster and extra useful. other sorts of filters consist of topology and discovery filters, which are discussed in detail in Chapter 9, "Scalability and Distribution."

6.1.3 surroundings background photos and automatic design

background pix will also be used to raise the look of a submap. They can also be used to display geographic areas, flooring plans, or organizational constructions. a few file formats are supported for submap history pictures. you probably have a file that is not in the listing, assess the unencumber Notes for presently supported file codecs. Supported file codecs for background portraits are listed in desk 6-1.

table 6-1. File forms supported through NNM for submap historical past pix.

historical past photographs may be configured for a submap via following these steps:

  • opt for Map→Submap→homes from the menu bar.

  • click the [Browse. . ] button listed through the historical past graphics component to the dialog container. here's found on the View tab for windows.

  • choose a picture as proven in the list of figure 6-3.

06fig03.giffigure 6-three The administrator can set a heritage picture for every submap. most of the offered images include geographic areas. The administrator can also import a customized photo akin to a ground plan.

  • click on [OK].

  • reminiscence issues when the usage of heritage photographs

One factor to remember when environment heritage photographs is the volume of physical reminiscence (RAM) you have on your NNM gadget. in the event you open a map, all objects, together with history pix, are loaded into reminiscence [4] . The greater objects in the database, the extra reminiscence required to load objects into memory. similarly, the greater complex the image, the more reminiscence required. a technique to tell in case your equipment is memory-sure is that if the synchronization manner takes a very long time (more than a few minutes) in case you open a map. If synchronization is taking too lengthy, try reducing the variety of objects being loaded into reminiscence. a technique to obtain this is through altering the persistence degree of your map.

    6.1.three.2 Submap Persistence

The persistence level of a submap indicates the stage at which objects are loaded into memory. in case you select any option aside from All tiers, the objects performing on submaps below that level are not loaded into reminiscence except you open that certain submap. that you may outline the persistence degree of a map via following these steps.

  • choose the map properties.

  • select IP Map and click on [Configure For This Map. . ]

  • Scroll down to the section that reads

On-Demand: To what degree may still submaps be persistent.

  • opt for one of the crucial levels:

    All ranges

    section stage and better

    network degree and higher

    web degree

  • After choosing the persistence degree, click on [Verify] and [OK] within the IP Map configuration dialog box and [OK] in the Map houses dialog box.

  • Any changes you're making to a submap will cause it to turn into a persistent submap, despite the persistence surroundings. as an instance, in case you set your map persistence level to the section level and higher, most effective the root, information superhighway, and community degree objects may be loaded into memory. youngsters, if you make any of right here adjustments to a segment or node degree submap, you will cause that submap to turn into persistent:

  • Submap Overlay

  • Window Geometry

  • Hidden Objects

  • history images

  • Auto-design

  • Any objects contained in the submaps that have customizations equivalent to these should be loaded into memory on every occasion the map is open. As an additional illustration, in case you set your persistence degree to internet level and set a historical past picture on every submap, you defeat the purpose of setting the persistence stage.

    6.1.3.three automatic design

The goal of automated design is to allow a device discovered with the aid of NNM to have its symbols positioned on a submap with out human intervention. When the usage of historical past photographs, you might also find that you'd like to manually manage the placement of symbols. When putting objects on a floor plan, for instance, you could turn off auto layout and region the symbols the place they physically live. to turn off computerized layout for an individual submap, opt for View→automatic design→Off For This Submap as proven in figure 6-4.

06fig04.giffigure 6-4 This submap has been configured with Georgia as the background picture. NNM ships with a GIF file for every US state and many countries. flip off automated layout to permit guide placement of symbols.

After you flip auto layout off, be aware that [Auto-Layout] is removed from the fame line and a "New Object retaining area" appears at the bottom of the submap, as proven in determine 6-5. When new contraptions are found that belong on a submap the place auto design is grew to become off, the newly discovered objects are placed within the New Object conserving area. You have to drag the brand new objects from the new Object maintaining enviornment and drop them onto the desired location on the submap.

06fig05.jpgdetermine 6-5 the brand new Object keeping area is created when automated design is turned off. Newly found instruments are placed within the New Object protecting enviornment. They can also be manually positioned on a submap with the aid of drag-and-drop.

    6.1.four Partitioning the web Submap

NNM knows the way to lay out devices in response to the information supplied by using SNMP queries. The submap hierarchy from desirable to bottom is

  • Root

  • web

  • community

  • segment

  • Node

  • The design of your community may also be personalized at the information superhighway stage submap. The aim is to permit partitioning of your network in line with geographical or logical assistance. NNM does an excellent job of offering the physical connections of your community but makes no assumptions as to the organizational structure. This customization is known as partitioning the information superhighway submap.

Partitioning the information superhighway submap requires that you add a different category of symbol referred to as a region image. The steps to partition the IP cyber web submap are as follows:

  • From the internet submap choose

    Edit→Add Object

  • select the place image (figure 6-6) and drag any of the subclass symbols to the submap.

06fig06.jpgdetermine 6-6 area objects can also be used to partition the IP web submap. be aware the vicinity objects delivered to the submap shown (Japan and Australia) are within the utility plane (no shading seems around the image).

  • supply a Label and click on [OK].

  • Repeat the introduction of region icons unless you have got described all integral areas.

  • Drag each and every image and drop it within the favored area. [5] Connections will immediately be based between location symbols as proven in figure 6-7.

06fig07.jpgfigure 6-7 When partitioning the internet submap, connections between the areas are automatically established as symbols are moved into the region icons.

  • place icons will also be cascaded when partitioning the internet submap. for instance, you could add us of a on the web level, add State below united states of america, and add city under State, after which add building, web page, Room, and so forth.

    6.1.5 creating Executable Symbols

via default, symbols on a submap spawn a child submap when double clicked. This habits is referred to as "explodable." image houses on a submap may be modified to launch an utility when double-clicked in preference to opening a baby submap. This habits is called "executable." a couple of pre-described applications exist and are obtainable in NNM. really, most applications obtainable from the menu bar and the toolbar can be used in creating executable symbols. These purposes are defined in NNM via utility Registration data (ARFs). apart from the use of the pre-defined purposes, you could create your personal applications by using defining ARFs as discussed in Chapter 7, "superior Customization."

to utilize the executable symbol function in NNM, follow the steps listed here. For this example, use a device that enables incoming telnet classes.

  • access the image homes by means of appropriate-clicking and deciding upon image residences as shown in determine 6-8.

06fig08.gifdetermine 6-8 the first step in making an icon executable is to vicinity the cursor over the image, click on the appropriate mouse button, and choose symbol houses. .  from the image popup menu.

  • adjust the symbol conduct to Execute, as shown in figure 6-9. be aware the checklist of functions that seem under the part labeled "software motion."

06fig09.giffigure 6-9 The 2d step in making an icon executable is to alter the habits of the image to Execute and choose to utility to be launched.

  • Scroll through the checklist and select the application

    Terminal join: XTerm Telnet

  • click the [Target Objects. . ] button.

  • click the [Add] button to include the hostname and click on [OK] on the target Objects dialog field as proven in determine 6-10.

06fig10.giffigure 6-10 The third step in developing an executable icon is to click on the [Target Objects] button, which displays the dialog box proven. choose the [Add] button so as to add the hostname as a goal object.

  • click [OK] on the symbol homes dialog field and you will see the executable image as shown in determine 6-eleven. When the symbol is double clicked it launches a telnet session to the equipment.

06fig11.jpgdetermine 6-11 The executable icon (r208w100) shows up as a button. Double-click on it to launch the utility. that you would be able to additionally drag a logo and drop it on the button to launch the application on one other object.

  • after getting created an executable symbol, you could drag different symbols and drop them onto the executable image. as an instance, in case you are looking to launch telnet on a different system, effortlessly drag the image and drop it onto the executable image. Making an emblem "executable" doesn't affect the image fame set with the aid of ipmap. there is one caveat when changing an current symbol's habits to executable. After altering an existing image to executable, you will not be in a position to entry the image's baby submap by using double clicking the image. instead, the only solution to access the baby submap of the image is to make use of the submap open feature. that you may do that by means of selecting Map→Submap→Open. .  you are going to should drill down throughout the submap listings to locate the modified image's submap. choose the modified image and click the [Open Submaps] button. for this reason, that you may also create standalone symbols that launch functions. It isn't indispensable to modify the behavior of an current image.

    6.1.6 MIB applications

lots of the alternatives from the device and menu bar access purposes that talk with the MIB. When launched, these purposes ship SNMP queries to the chosen node to access definite MIB variables. Some functions create tables that include the statistics and others generate real-time graphs. NNM gives many constructed-in MIB functions as neatly because the ability to create your personal MIB purposes by way of the GUI. constructed-in MIB functions

Most MIB purposes require you to opt for a node earlier than launching. If nothing is selected, the menu objects will be grayed out and unavailable. Let's look at one of the crucial built-in MIB purposes. opt for a node and select from the menu bar efficiency→community exercise→Interface traffic: Packet expense as shown in figure 6-12. this may display a real-time graph of the MIB variables for packet expense.

06fig12.gifdetermine 6-12 Interface site visitors is a developed-in MIB software attainable from the menu bar. opt for a node and select network endeavor→Interface traffic: Packet rate from the menu bar. This initiates snmpgets for certain MIB variables and displays them graphically. developing MIB purposes

NNM offers the capacity to create MIB functions that might be integrated into the NNM menu bar. This may also be achieved by using the MIB application builder.

The MIB utility builder permits you to create custom graphs and tables by defining the MIB variables you need to be displayed.

observe these steps to create your MIB graph:

  • choose options→MIB software Builder: SNMP from the menu bar. This shows an empty MIB utility dialog container as proven in figure 6-13.

06fig13.giffigure 6-13 To create a MIB application, select alternate options→MIB application Builder: SNMP from the menu bar. The list can be empty through default. choose Edit?Add MIB utility. . .

  • choose Edit→Add MIB utility. . . you're going to see the dialog field as shown in figure 6-14.

06fig14.gifdetermine 6-14 Specify the application identity, application category, software Title, Menu course and click the [Add. . ] button.

  • complete here fields to define the MIB application:

software identity— This should be a distinct identity now not containing areas or particular characters. For this example, use InVSOut

software class— Set this to desk, kind, or graph. For this illustration specify graph.

application Title— identify the utility anything you desire. this may comprise spaces and particular characters. For this example, specify "In Packets VS Out Packets".

Menu path— This describes the cascaded menu bar for the software starting with the right-stage menu. This might also additionally comprise areas. Use "->" to point out cascading menus. For this instance, specify yourname customized Apps→In VS Out

choice Rule— The selection Rule describes the node type for which this utility will work. except you're well-known with the filtering language described in Chapter 9, it's foremost to go away it set to the default. The default choice Rule (isSNMPSupported || isSNMPProxied) will feature on any equipment that supports SNMP or has an SNMP proxy.

  • click the [Add. . ] button to define the MIB variables for the application.

  • Traverse the MIB tree to encompass the MIB variables for the utility. Use the manage key and left mouse click on simultaneously to select the desired variables. This instance uses the MIB variables ieeeMacTransmitted and ieeeMacFramesReceived proven in figure 6-15 below the MIB subtree inner most.organizations.hp.nm.interface .ieee8023Mac.ieee8023MacTable.ieeeMacEntry

06fig15.giffigure 6-15 make sure to be time-honored with the MIB tree structure as a way to create MIB functions. Press the control key and left click on simultaneously to select diverse variables.

  • After settling on the preferred variables, click [OK] from the Add MIB Objects dialog container.

  • click on [OK] from the Add MIB utility dialog container. make sure to see your custom menu as shown in determine 6-sixteen. You are actually able to execute your application.

06fig16.jpgdetermine 6-sixteen select the node on which to execute the newly created MIB application. select the software from the menu bar detailed within the Menu direction of the MIB software builder.

  • 6.1.5.three Use Your MIB application as an Executable symbol

After you could have created an MIB utility it turns into an NNM registered utility. The MIB utility can now be used when developing executable symbols. Add an object to a submap, exchange the conduct to executable, and verify the record in your software. An utility Registration File (ARF) is created if you happen to outline an MIB application.

OpenView Delves Deeper Into systems administration | Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

Hewlett-Packard has been delving deeper and deeper into crossplatform enterprise methods management, via a sequence of know-how investments in OpenView. Now, users and analysts are definitely feeling the affect.

When it involves heterogenous environments, OpenView is a robust participant, in keeping with invoice Emmett, options supervisor at HP. "OpenView compares favorably to IBM Tivoli and CA-Unicenter on the foundation of each can charge effectiveness and modular, plug-and-play architecture," he contends. apart from its myriad API interfaces, Emmett emphasizes OpenView's help for myriad operating methods and varied "open necessities."

Emmett's enthusiasm is rarely spectacular, considering that vendors customarily tout their personal products. Some users and analysts, even though, are equally gung-ho.

Tim Hagan, VP of IT operations and engineering for Zurich life, says it took him and a few other people lower than ninety days to installation OpenView in a fancy call middle environment.

Zurich life is using OpenView to manage about one hundred ten servers and sixty five databases in two physical places. The programs are working HP-UX, solar Solaris, IBM AIX, and Microsoft home windows 2000, NT, and XP. Zurich is working OpenView on HP-UX servers, however the techniques management platform runs on solar Solaris and Microsoft windows servers, too.

not "only a community Node manager"When Hagan first came to Zurich life in January of 2000, the coverage company became still the use of HP's ancient network Node supervisor. "That turned into one of the vital reasons i was employed. It failed to damage that i'd had prior success with OpenView in an prior job. I knew that OpenView has a really open structure, and that it might very right away tie in with our (other) latest systems and equipment," according to Hagan.

The latest OpenView product does consist of network Node supervisor as certainly one of its myriad optional modules. Used for community factor discovery, design, inventory and efficiency, it connects with HP OpenView Operations for go-self-discipline administration.

"The historical network Node manager (alone) became a very reactive atmosphere, notwithstanding. We saved hearing about outages from our internal purchasers. we would get the signs and descriptions after the activities had already came about. we would turn out to be searching not so respectable, and often we might deserve to usher in a bunch of people to support repair the issue," Hagan says..

"With OpenView, however, we've turn into directly proactive. we will keep away from issues, and we're aware about problems that do occur before the users even learn about them. If a customer calls, we will say, 'A main issue ticket has already been created, and a page has been despatched out. Such-and-such utility might be up in an hour or two.'"

HP needs to be a software playerSome critics argue that OpenView can not be all that critical to HP, on the grounds that HP's hardware revenues a ways outweigh the application facet. youngsters, industry analyst Jasmine Noel disputes that conclusion.

Noel points to a number of trade trends affecting HP, as well as other business providers. "Margins on computing hardware keep declining; computing-based business functions at the moment are important to business success; and a hit start of company capabilities requires administration of the whole compting stack," she says.

"The computing stack in each enormous business continues to be heterogenous," provides Noel, who is major at JNoel acquaintances. "This mixture of traits requires HP to have a heterogenous management solution (so as to latest) a reputable software story to business purchasers."

Noel additionally likes the investments HP is making in "intelligent" management, for more efficient administration, and in industry partnerships, for stronger interoperability with different providers' items.

OpenView's EvolutionEmmett notes that HP first moved into systems management with network Node manager in 1988. "We used what know-how turned into accessible at the time, together with SNMP. We then begun adding further and further capabilities," he provides. Acquisitions helped HP to build up OpenView. In 1997, for instance, HP purchased Prolin, the Netherlands-primarily based maker of the IT provider supervisor suite.

At this element, HP's big OpenView household revolves mostly around Operations monitor and performance video display. each monitoring product has agents working on all major structures, ranging from Linux to MVS.

Operations supervisor is the central enterprise console, for an conclusion-to-conclusion view of the enterprise that contains client PCs, the community, functions, and database. efficiency display screen provides tools similar to a graphing feature and reports for monitoring and examining aid utilization.

For improved interoperability, OpenView complies with specifications ranging from SNMP and RMON to OMI. "We commonly sit down on standards committees, basically," according to Emmett.

HP also presents a set of templates, referred to as smart Plug-Ins (SPIs), for configuring third-celebration tools. "The sensible Plug-In is aware of where to discover the log data in Oracle, as an instance," Emmett illustrates.

The HP Operations supervisor can also be mixed with OpenView provider Navigator, provider assistance Portal, service Desk, and web services, in addition to with community Node manager, for example.

carrier Navigator makes use of assistance captured within the SPIs to let administrators drill right down to find root explanations for skills issues. If a warning flashes because software performance is degrading, the administrator can drill down throughout the database and storage equipment to find out that a disk is overheating, as an instance, according to Emmett.

carrier Navigator additionally contains "affect evaluation" capabilities for deciding on which databases and applications are prone to suffer, and the degree of severity of the upcoming hit. OpenView uses color coding to point out six different severity states.

administrators can automate response sequence, equivalent to paging an administrator or failing over to a backup server, as an example. An optional add-on referred to as advanced protection offers authentication and records encryption.

As Emmett sees it, OpenView has two main units of rivals: "framework carriers" (equivalent to IBM Tivoli and CA) and "aspect tool carriers." BA Patrol, he says, "falls somewhere in between."

Deployment in 88 days"My business granted us 180 days for OpenView deployment. I installation a lots extra aggressive schedule of ninety days, but we have been able to wind up in 88 days," Hagan says. Hagan labored on the rollout at Zurich lifestyles with one fulltime consultant, plus one employee. The employee spent 50 % of his time on the OpenView rollout, and the other half of his time on Unix administration.

"One crucial piece become to be certain we acquired the requirements for alarms monitors and thresholds from all the linked systems managers. We failed to wish to be paging somebody at three am, simply as a result of server capability had reached 90 percent," Hagan remembers.

Hagan claims that he's gotten extensive cooperation from all throughout his company. "Our e-commerce team thinks OpenView is spectacular. What that you could do with OpenView is restricted handiest through your creativeness."

Zurich existence has already used HP's SPIs to integrate Oracle, Sybase SQL Server, and several third-birthday celebration administration tools. Hagan says the business is now checking out SPIs for Lotus Notes and Ciscoworks, as an instance.

Zurich did agree with different programs management products, equivalent to Tivoli, Unicenter, and Patrol. "Some products, notwithstanding, do not deliver records it is as meaningful, and a few have longer implementation instances. We didn't have a major group of workers to roll this out," Hagan features out.

greater automation on the manner"windows, Solaris, and HP-UX. those are the server environments that systems administration products typically run on, however occasionally you get one or two others, depending on the seller's partnerships," Noel observes..

beyond that, Noel would not need to examine OpenView with other methods administration products. "each and every one is too distinctive," she continues.

The analyst is mainly impressed, notwithstanding, with HP's future plans for simplifying methods and automating provider degree management with OpenView.

"HP's message it their goal market is that corporate IT departments that operate as enterprise partners could be greater a success, much less liable to costcutting measures, and fewer prone to be outsourced," in line with Noel.

"HP has two usual messages about its solutions. the first is (that) HP options aid corporate IT carry more desirable features with fewer elements and lessen prices. The proverbial silver bullet HP OpenView presents is provider degree management. HP expands the definition of service degree administration from the current understanding of monitoring and alerting on SLA violations to one in every of a procedure of defining, provisioning, managing, and optimizing the substances supplying the service," based on Noel.

"HP's 2d message is (that) their solution set is both complete and inventive. (The message) is finished in that HP has solutions for each factor of provider stage management and continues to add capabilities. (it's) imaginitive in that HP's most recent products handle how new applied sciences change the administration necessities."

HP's three-12 months roadmap requires further improvements to integration, infrastructure, and storage administration; building of a provider degree Object model; and start of products "that support in the diagnostic procedure," the analyst notes.

On the integration aspect, as an instance, HP is now within the system of consolidating its multiple integration APIs right into a single toolkit for third party companies.

With the provider stage Object model, HP is calling to "grab all of the tips, and put it into a common format, so or not it's less complicated to share counsel as you circulate from one step in the system to the other," according to Noel.

when it comes to infrastructure insurance, HP is working on web features specifications and protocols corresponding to J2EE, WebMethods' OMI initiative, and Microsoft's .internet servers.

some of OpenView's latest items, akin to OpenView Transaction manager, can display screen J2EE and .web capabilities and applications. For the future, although, HP plans to build in additional intelligence.

"that you would be able to computer screen 100 things in J2EE, however which of them are most critical? at the moment, you best get that by using (OpenView) for ages. also, that you can trace the route a transaction took through .net, but you could most effective do this after-the-fact. HP wants to bring this into realtime," she says.

HP now offers SPIs for WebMethods, Microsoft .net, and SunOne internet functions - soap Engine, for example. as a minimum forty SPIs are offered, all told.

other currently added OpenView items encompass service Activator, for automating the birth of functions offered with the aid of hosting providers; and records Protector, a alternative for OpenView Omniback II.

information Protector is designed for built-in administration of disk-primarily based and tape-primarily based healing across multiple OS, applications, and storage architectures. administrators can control each restoration time and restoration factor targets.

HP integrates CompaqWith the Compaq acquisition, HP is now working on integrating Compaq's products into its programs administration combine. Compaq perception manager will proceed to be used handiest in Wintel environments, when you consider that its administration capabilities are hardware-oriented, Emmett says.

despite the fact, Compaq's TeMIP product for telco administration is now being ported by using HP from Tru64 - which become originally DEC Unix - to HP-UX and Solaris, Emmett adds.

very nearly, versions of OpenView for HP-UX, Solaris and home windows present the same capabilities. "however we're additionally taking skills of the qualities of each platform. The windows edition changed into designed for windows from the floor up. It makes use of windows drag-and-drop, as an example," Emmett says.

OpenView is windows 2000-licensed. On he windows side, the product also makes use of Microsoft technologies that consist of MMC, WMI, CIM, DCOM, visible primary scripting, HTML/XML, HTTP/cleaning soap, information superhighway Explorer, and IIS.

"in the meantime, we're additionally holding our eyes open for other competencies server structures, including Linux," provides HP's Emmett.

OpenView Delves Deeper Into Systems Management | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

Hewlett-Packard has been delving deeper and deeper into crossplatform enterprise systems management, through a series of technology investments in OpenView. Now, users and analysts are definitely feeling the impact.

When it comes to heterogenous environments, OpenView is a strong player, according to Bill Emmett, solutions manager at HP. "OpenView compares favorably to IBM Tivoli and CA-Unicenter on the basis of both cost effectiveness and modular, plug-and-play architecture," he contends. Aside from its myriad API interfaces, Emmett emphasizes OpenView's support for myriad operating systems and multiple "open standards."

Emmett's enthusiasm isn't surprising, since vendors typically tout their own products. Some users and analysts, though, are equally gung-ho.

Tim Hagan, VP of IT operations and engineering for Zurich Life, says it took him and a couple of other people less than 90 days to deploy OpenView in a complex call center environment.

Zurich Life is using OpenView to manage about 110 servers and 65 databases in two physical locations. The systems are running HP-UX, Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, and Microsoft Windows 2000, NT, and XP. Zurich is operating OpenView on HP-UX servers, but the systems management platform runs on Sun Solaris and Microsoft Windows servers, too.

No Longer "Just a Network Node Manager"When Hagan first came to Zurich Life in January of 2000, the insurance firm was still using HP's old Network Node Manager. "That was one of the reasons I was hired. It didn't hurt that I'd had prior success with OpenView in an earlier job. I knew that OpenView has a very open architecture, and that it would very quickly tie in with our (other) existing platforms and tools," according to Hagan.

The current OpenView product does include Network Node Manager as one of its myriad optional modules. Used for network element discovery, layout, inventory and performance, it connects with HP OpenView Operations for cross-discipline administration.

"The old Network Node Manager (alone) was a very reactive environment, though. We kept hearing about outages from our internal customers. We'd get the symptoms and descriptions after the events had already happened. We'd end up looking not so good, and sometimes we'd need to bring in a bunch of people to help fix the problem," Hagan says..

"With OpenView, however, we've become instantly proactive. We can prevent problems, and we're aware of problems that do occur before the users even know about them. If a customer calls, we can say, 'A trouble ticket has already been created, and a page has been sent out. Such-and-such application will be up in an hour or two.'"

HP needs to be a software playerSome critics argue that OpenView can't be all that important to HP, since HP's hardware revenues far outweigh the software side. However, industry analyst Jasmine Noel disputes that conclusion.

Noel points to a number of industry trends affecting HP, as well as other industry providers. "Margins on computing hardware keep declining; computing-based business services are now critical to enterprise success; and successful delivery of business services requires management of the entire compting stack," she says.

"The computing stack in every large enterprise continues to be heterogenous," adds Noel, who is principal at JNoel Associates. "This combination of trends requires HP to have a heterogenous management solution (in order to present) a credible software story to enterprise customers."

Noel also likes the investments HP is making in "intelligent" management, for more efficient administration, and in industry partnerships, for better interoperability with other vendors' products.

OpenView's EvolutionEmmett notes that HP first moved into systems management with Network Node Manager in 1988. "We used what technology was available at the time, including SNMP. We then started adding more and more capabilities," he adds. Acquisitions helped HP to build up OpenView. In 1997, for instance, HP bought Prolin, the Netherlands-based maker of the IT Service Manager suite.

At this point, HP's large OpenView family revolves largely around Operations Monitor and Performance Monitor. Each monitoring product has agents running on all major platforms, ranging from Linux to MVS.

Operations Manager is the central enterprise console, for an end-to-end view of the enterprise that includes client PCs, the network, applications, and database. Performance Monitor provides tools such as a graphing function and reports for monitoring and analyzing resource utilization.

For better interoperability, OpenView complies with standards ranging from SNMP and RMON to OMI. "We often sit on standards committees, in fact," according to Emmett.

HP also offers a set of templates, known as Smart Plug-Ins (SPIs), for configuring third-party tools. "The Smart Plug-In knows where to find the log files in Oracle, for instance," Emmett illustrates.

The HP Operations Manager can also be combined with OpenView Service Navigator, Service Information Portal, Service Desk, and Internet Services, as well as with Network Node Manager, for example.

Service Navigator uses information captured in the SPIs to let administrators drill down to discover root causes for potential problems. If a warning flashes because application performance is degrading, the administrator can drill down through the database and storage system to find out that a disk is overheating, for instance, according to Emmett.

Service Navigator also includes "impact analysis" capabilities for determining which databases and applications are likely to suffer, and the level of severity of the impending hit. OpenView uses color coding to indicate six different severity states.

Administrators can automate response sequence, such as paging an administrator or failing over to a backup server, for example. An optional add-on known as Advanced Security provides authentication and data encryption.

As Emmett sees it, OpenView has two main sets of competitors: "framework vendors" (such as IBM Tivoli and CA) and "point tool vendors." BA Patrol, he says, "falls somewhere in between."

Deployment in 88 days"My company granted us 180 days for OpenView deployment. I set up a much more aggressive schedule of 90 days, but we were able to finish up in 88 days," Hagan says. Hagan worked on the rollout at Zurich Life with one fulltime consultant, plus one employee. The employee spent 50 percent of his time on the OpenView rollout, and the other half of his time on Unix administration.

"One important piece was to make sure we got the requirements for alarms monitors and thresholds from all of the associated systems managers. We didn't want to be paging someone at 3 am, just because server capacity had reached 90 percent," Hagan recalls.

Hagan claims that he's gotten extensive cooperation from all across his company. "Our e-commerce team thinks OpenView is wonderful. What you can do with OpenView is limited only by your imagination."

Zurich Life has already used HP's SPIs to integrate Oracle, Sybase SQL Server, and several third-party management tools. Hagan says the company is now testing SPIs for Lotus Notes and Ciscoworks, for instance.

Zurich did consider other systems management products, such as Tivoli, Unicenter, and Patrol. "Some products, though, don't provide data that's as meaningful, and some have longer implementation times. We didn't have a huge staff to roll this out," Hagan points out.

More automation on the way"Windows, Solaris, and HP-UX. Those are the server environments that systems management products typically run on, although sometimes you get one or two others, depending on the vendor's partnerships," Noel observes..

Beyond that, Noel doesn't want to compare OpenView with other systems management products. "Each one is too different," she maintains.

The analyst is especially impressed, though, with HP's future plans for simplifying systems and automating service level management with OpenView.

"HP's message it their target market is that corporate IT departments that operate as business partners will be more successful, less prone to costcutting measures, and less likely to be outsourced," according to Noel.

"HP has two overall messages about its solutions. The first is (that) HP solutions help corporate IT deliver better services with fewer resources and lower costs. The proverbial silver bullet HP OpenView offers is service level management. HP expands the definition of service level management from the current understanding of monitoring and alerting on SLA violations to one of a process of defining, provisioning, managing, and optimizing the resources delivering the service," according to Noel.

"HP's second message is (that) their solution set is both comprehensive and innovative. (The message) is comprehensive in that HP has solutions for every aspect of service level management and continues to add capabilities. (It is) innovative in that HP's newest products address how new technologies change the management requirements."

HP's three-year roadmap calls for further improvements to integration, infrastructure, and storage management; development of a Service Level Object Model; and delivery of products "that aid in the diagnostic process," the analyst notes.

On the integration side, for instance, HP is now in the process of consolidating its multiple integration APIs into a single toolkit for third party vendors.

With the Service Level Object Model, HP is looking to "grab all the information, and put it into a common format, so it's easier to share information as you move from one step in the process to the other," according to Noel.

In terms of infrastructure coverage, HP is working on Web Services standards and protocols such as J2EE, WebMethods' OMI initiative, and Microsoft's .NET servers.

Some of OpenView's latest products, such as OpenView Transaction Manager, can monitor J2EE and .NET services and applications. For the future, though, HP plans to build in more intelligence.

"You can monitor 100 things in J2EE, but which ones are most important? Right now, you only get that by using (OpenView) for a while. Also, you can trace the path a transaction took through .NET, but you can only do this after-the-fact. HP wants to bring this into realtime," she says.

HP now offers SPIs for WebMethods, Microsoft .NET, and SunOne Web Services - SOAP Engine, for example. At least 40 SPIs are provided, all told.

Other recently added OpenView products include Service Activator, for automating the delivery of services offered by hosting providers; and Data Protector, a replacement for OpenView Omniback II.

Data Protector is designed for integrated management of disk-based and tape-based recovery across multiple OS, applications, and storage architectures. Administrators can manage both recovery time and recovery point objectives.

HP integrates CompaqWith the Compaq acquisition, HP is now working on integrating Compaq's products into its systems administration mix. Compaq Insight Manager will continue to be used only in Wintel environments, since its administration capabilities are hardware-oriented, Emmett says.

However, Compaq's TeMIP product for telco administration is now being ported by HP from Tru64 - which was originally DEC Unix - to HP-UX and Solaris, Emmett adds.

Essentially, editions of OpenView for HP-UX, Solaris and Windows offer the same capabilities. "But we're also taking advantage of the characteristics of each platform. The Windows version was designed for Windows from the ground up. It makes use of Windows drag-and-drop, for instance," Emmett says.

OpenView is Windows 2000-certified. On he Windows side, the product also uses Microsoft technologies that include MMC, WMI, CIM, DCOM, Visual Basic scripting, HTML/XML, HTTP/SOAP, Internet Explorer, and IIS.

"Meanwhile, we're also keeping our eyes open for other potential server platforms, including Linux," adds HP's Emmett.

All in the Family: A Revealing Look at HP’s Windows 2000 Services and Products | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

All in the Family: A Revealing Look at HP’s Windows 2000 Services and Products

HP, as a Microsoft Windows 2000 Global Launch Partner, revealed its aggressive services strategy and a number of new products at the recent Mircosoft Expo. HP is abundantly prepared to support Windows 2000 with the complete family of hardware products and a comprehensive service program.

The three-day Microsoft Windows 2000 Conference and Expo held in San Francisco was attended by several thousand eager IT professionals. Unlike Microsoft’s past major, customer-based product launches, this event was very subdued, presumably to reflect the serious nature of business computing. HP, as a Microsoft Windows 2000 Global Launch Partner, revealed its own aggressive services strategy and a number of new products.

In an approach that is typical of HP, the company is abundantly prepared to support Windows 2000 with the complete family of hardware products and a comprehensive service program. One of the most telling examples of HP’s commitment to Windows 2000 was the recent formation of the Microsoft Services Organization. (See sidebar conversation with HP General Manager David Stubbs.) The new business unit is dedicated to helping customers plan, design, implement and maintain Microsoft technologies across the enterprise to deliver what they hope to be bulletproof computing environments.

The outward relationship between HP and Microsoft exhibited during the event was all grins and thumbs-up. Although there existed some behind-the-scenes concern regarding future product conflicts, Microsoft’s Vice President of Windows Marketing, Deborah Willingham, officially echoed the mutual love by stating, "We are thrilled that HP is presenting such a comprehensive range of hardware, software, services and support for Windows 2000. The depth of HP’s services, which include consulting, migration services, license management and training, will give our mutual customers the crucial services they need."

Jim Allchin, Microsoft Group Vice President for Windows Platforms, underscored these views. "HP is building PC systems that are fully optimized for Windows 2000 … by combining world-class products and services from Microsoft and HP, customers enjoy a smoother migration path and a more consistent, manageable user experience."

    Manageability Products

For many years, HP has led the pack in cross platform network management tools. With the release of Windows 2000, HP has made a renewed commitment to its flagship OpenView suite. OpenView Microsoft Alliance Manager, John Renshaw, and Product Manager, Pam Peterson, eagerly promoted the new Windows 2000 manageability tools.

The big news is something called Vantage Point for Windows, a collection of technologies that was developed for enterprise Windows 2000 manageability. According to Renshaw, "Vantage Point provides real intelligence instance tracking, and the ability to proactively understand what is being run. Vantage Point and OpenView Express were built from the ground-up to support Windows 2000. This allows significant scalability."

Building from its current enterprise successes, HP OpenView Express is designed for mid-size enterprises running Windows 2000 and other operating systems. It combines HP OpenView ManageX for proactive server control and management, OpenView Network Node Manager for network administration and event notification, and OpenView OmniBack II for backup and retrieval of stored digital data. This suite facilitates quicker problem isolation and resolution by integrating network information. Through the use of event correlation, alarms, reporting and threshold establishment, the enterprise system administrator is afforded tools to manage and troubleshoot.

HP OpenView provides policy-based management to monitor Windows 2000 systems, based on predefined thresholds. Action can be taken when failure or degradation is found in CPU utilization, memory usage, disk utilization or performance reliability. OpenView can also be used to automatically restart Windows 2000 services when thresholds are exceeded.

When asked about its relationship to Windows 2000 Active Directory, Renshaw stated that a considerable amount of effort has gone into providing APIs for future development. At this time, the relationship is rather basic, but plans for further integration are in the works. As to the relationship of HP’s management tools with Microsoft’s System Management Server product, HP was less definitive. "We consider them complementary at this stage, but there may be some functionality overlap in the future … we will have to see things develop."

In a side discussion with the CIO of Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Michael Keithley, we discovered a big fan of OpenView Express. He gave an example of the requirements that CAA has for storing and retrieving the large amounts of streaming digital data associated with the film, television and recording industry. The need to rapidly produce digital content about their clients is an important factor of their success. Keithley states that the "OmniBack feature, in particular, more than exceeded our expectations. Running OpenView Express on Windows 2000 provides both performance and reduced costs." The company currently uses 45 HP 4- and 8-way NetServer LPr, and LX 8000 and 8500 systems. In addition, it has 25 HP NetServers in place to support file, print, fax and e-mail services.

Another important application suite introduced for support on Windows 2000 is HP TopTools. This set of utilities monitors system activities and alerts users of pending component failure or other potential problems.

    Enhanced Security Bundle

One of the key value-added components to the Windows 2000 mix offered by HP is its advanced security products. Denis Bournival, HP Program Manager, shared his thoughts on these security initiatives.

The HP ProtectTools 2000 optimizes the security features already available in Windows 2000. "The Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) features of the OS are further enhanced, for example, by the new HP Smart Card readers," states Bournival. "This technology is finding acceptance across industries, with highest demand in financial, government, and business to business Internet settings."

HP views the ProtectTool 2000 as a transaction-enabling technology through the use of Virtual Private Networks. "IPSec performance is also significantly improved," concludes Bournival.

HP takes the concept of their security bundle one step further. One of the most underrated areas of enterprise security relates to power management. If the system fails, costly data could be lost. In response to this issue, HP announced the HP Power Protection Device for Windows 2000. Designed to work directly with the Windows 2000 Professional hibernation mode, this compact device fits into a PC single free expansion shelf. The Power Protection Device is fully automatic, whether the PC is unattended, in sleep mode, in "suspend" mode, or in "Suspend to RAM" mode. All open file and user desktop environment backup is performed in case of power failure, shutting down the PC, cleanly and securely, within five seconds.

HP is extremely aggressive in offering its Windows 2000 services. In a conversation with Ian Bromehead, who manages the Global Microsoft Solutions Services Center in Grenoble, France, he indicated that HP has opened operations around the world to support Windows 2000 proof-of-concept testing, planning and migration. "We want customers to experience Windows 2000 in a real-world environment and then to prototype their enterprise with expert support."

The Windows 2000 Readiness Assessment programs are designed to help clients understand their current IT environment and to contrast these needs against the combined products and services offered by HP and Microsoft. HP consultants work with customers to deliver large and complex implementations in a controlled test environment. The Server and Storage Consolidation Planning program is designed to assist customers to develop and manage an architectural strategy that optimizes Windows 2000 technology.

Testing HP's SureStore NetStorage 6000 NAS | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

OpenBench Labs goes under the hood of Hewlett-Packard's NAS server, unveiling some interesting performance results.

    By Jack Fegreus

The explosive growth in storage is expressing itself in new definitions of what constitutes "the system." An interesting idea for system managers is attached storage, particularly network-attached storage (NAS).

Just a few years ago it was unthinkable to consider adding storage to a "system" without taking the system down, taking the hardware apart, and physically putting disks into an enclosure. Once the hardware was updated, the system-management tasks, including initializing and formatting drives, began.

Enter the realm of NAS and the Hewlett-Packard SureStore NetStorage 6000. This month, OpenBench Labs puts this NAS server through its paces and assesses how users and administrators can benefit from the convenience, expandability, and performance of the HP NetStorage 6000.

Whether or not users are aware of the NAS device depends on just how aware they are of their network environment, and how well the operations staff has hidden device configuration from view. Linux users may be aware of a new file mount point, while Windows users may be aware of using a new or different drive letter. However, nobody needs to be made aware that the device can be actively shared between Linux and Windows systems.

Looking inside HP's NetStorage 6000 yields a different view. The NetStorage 6000 is a fully qualified file server with substantial power and capability. By default, there is 256MB of RAM (which can be upgraded to 512MB), a 700MHz Pentium III processor with 256KB cache, and an array of up to ten 36GB hot-swap drives, as well as tape drives to back up local and remote data. The NAS server is powered by a BSD-based network operating system (NOS) stored on FLASH ROM.

An embedded Ultra2 SCSI RAID controller manages the storage devices. The storage server is typically presented to the network via an integrated 10/100Mbps Ethernet card. The NetStorage 6000 also offers upgrades to Gigabit Ethernet and 1000Base-SX fiber to cover the need for faster network-transmission speeds. Most of the 256MB of memory is dedicated to serve as a cache for clients connecting to the system. Most of the CPU power is allotted to serving the disks across the Ethernet network and to managing the cache.

On the initial boot, the administrator uses the front panel to set up TCP/IP with or without DHCP and to set the network name for the NAS device. Once TCP/IP settings are chosen, the HP storage server is rebooted and appears on the network. All other configuration options, including disk configuration, system monitoring and alerting, network interoperability, and security, are achieved by means of a Web interface.

Once the Web interface has started, there are four essential aspects to completing the setup of the HP NetStorage 6000: setting system and alert traps, configuring the disks, setting client connectivity, and setting up backup options. In particular, system and alert settings comprise setting the system time and date, contact information, administrator's password, and means by which notification of a critical system or hardware failure is to be broadcast.

Configuring the disks is easy, but can be time-consuming, as each new file volume must be formatted. In our test configuration of six 36GB disks, we configured two three-disk RAID-5 file volumes. The Web interface to file-volume management allows the administrator to set volume parameters such as capacity, name, and RAID type. Once file volumes are created, administrators can expand them by simply assigning more storage. Directories are subordinate to file volumes, and directories can be created, renamed, and deleted as needed.

Clients can access file volumes via NFS mount points or Windows LAN Manager volume shares. The NetStorage 6000 presents directories that can be merged (mounted) into mount points within the normal NFS structure. Unix-like access permissions are set using the Web interface. Systems administrators can set a name by which Windows will see the volume share name. As with native Windows sharing, password security can be set by the access required. Once the share is created, it is exposed using SAMBA; Windows clients can gain access to the volume using the Windows native "Map Network Drive" interface.

We've deliberately skipped over the details of how the NetStorage 6000 manages disk media and the way in which it maps physical media into logical disk space that can be assigned to file volumes. When you start looking at the raw disk subsystem through the NAS server's interface, you see a collection of physical (raw) drives. These physical drives can be joined together into RAID arrays or left as individual devices. The HP NetStorage 6000 interface refers to the disks by their slot number, which is clearly marked on the front of the unit. Individual drives carry different status levels: Empty, Rebuilding, Online, Unassigned, Hot Spare, or Dead.

The hot-spare mechanism presented by the NetStorage 6000 is impressive in its utility and simplicity. When you configure physical drives you assign one or more as a hot spare. If a physical drive that is part of a RAID array fails, the NAS server automatically assigns the first available hot spare to replace the failed drive.

HP's NetStorage 6000 cabinet holds ten 36GB disk drives. While those drives could be configured to deliver 360GB of storage, neither HP nor OpenBench Labs recommends that approach. Despite the market pressure, HP quotes the maximum capacity as 288GB. This capacity is based on a configuration having two RAID-5 volumes with five disks in each volume.

Redundancy is essential to achieving the levels of reliability today's systems demand. HP ships the NetStorage 6000 with two power supplies, both of which are needed for normal operation. A third, hot-swappable power supply can be added so that the system will survive the failure of any single power supply. In addition, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can be connected to the NAS server, which will detect power-failure conditions and report them through its alerting mechanisms.

If the device is to hold critical corporate data, that data must be saved at least daily. If 10% of the data on a fully configured NetStorage 6000 were to change daily, that would require backing up 30GB of data each day. Fortunately, HP solves this backup problem by including an external SCSI port and providing for the installation of a tape drive in an empty disk slot. Software support for HP DLT tape is integrated into the NetStorage 6000. Moreover, backup and restore operations can be managed from the NAS server's Web interface.

In addition, the NetStorage 6000 provides what HP calls "disk checkpoints." On schedule or on demand, a system administrator can "draw a line" across a file volume. The NAS server responds by writing incoming data to a different place, which preserves the data state of the file volume. When a client writes data to the volume, the old data is copied to become a part of the checkpoint and the new data is flushed to disk, where it is not a member of the checkpoint.

The checkpoint file, however, resides on disk along with all other data. If the disk is lost, the entire checkpoint is lost. Furthermore, disk checkpoints grow over time. If data changes at a rapid rate, then the active checkpoint files will grow at a correspondingly high rate. We recommend that if you are going to use disk checkpointing, use an automatic schedule that will automatically delete out-of-date checkpoint files.

Because the HP NetStorage 6000 is a full-fledged NAS server, the implementation of security is fairly straightforward. HP has translated and stylized the security model of the NetStorage 6000 to make it familiar and functional for both Windows and Linux administrators. The security challenge for the NAS server is to recognize user identity, map those identities to a protection scheme, and then implement access criteria on that basis. Whenever there is a boundary between systems, such as a network connection, there is the opportunity for the malicious user to change the way that security codes and security settings are interpreted.

In the case of a Linux and/or Unix environment, the NetStorage 6000 stores file permissions in native format-it is a BSD-based system. Each file is stored with its inode meta-data, which includes file ownership and file permissions, in the familiar read/write/execute form.

In the Windows model, device security has two parts. First, the owner or administrator of a device or volume must allow access. If access is permitted, then a deliberate step is required to "share" the device.

In the case of Windows NT and Windows 2000, devices are always created with a default administrator share, which grants access to members of administrator groups. In such a Windows domain-security scenario, a domain controller-a PDC/BDC under Windows NT 4 or an Active Directory Domain Controller under Windows 2000-authenticates users.

HP allows security to be set in both Windows and Unix style. As a result, both Windows and Unix clients can access file volumes without loss of security or protection. The NetStorage 6000 also creates a mechanism for mapping individual file protection between the two architectural schemes. As a result, the NetStorage 6000 integrates easily and almost seamlessly into both Windows and Unix environments.

Nonetheless, consider the case in which multiple NetStorage 6000 devices are scattered throughout the network. The NetStorage 6000 accounts for these problems by integrating support of two classes of software: network-management and remote-backup applications. From the NetStorage 6000 Web interface, systems administrators can monitor NIC summary data, network activity, status summary, environmental parameters, event-log contents, and CPU utilization.

For large heterogeneous sites, which are likely to have a mix of Windows NT, Solaris, and Linux systems, HP NetStorage 6000's tool set includes CA Unicenter TNG Framework and CA ARCserveIT, which run on all of these systems. NetStorage 6000 also integrates with HP OpenView Network Node Manager, HP OpenView OmniBack, and Veritas BackupExec. These packages recognize the Net-Storage 6000; identify it by name, icon, and IP address; allow direct access to the NetStorage 6000 Web interface; and process event notifications from the storage subsystem. While the backup applications are explicitly integrated with the NetStorage 6000, most enterprise backup packages provide the facility to back up CIFS and NFS volumes.

Benchmarking the HP NetStorage 6000 was an interesting exercise that yielded equally interesting results. Our goal was to characterize the performance of the NetStorage 6000 and the rate at which it could deliver data to an application. The problem with NAS is the network: While internally the NetStorage 6000 is theoretically capable of pulling data off the disks at 80MBps, the default 100Mbps Ethernet connection-theoretically 12.5MBps-presents a much lower effective ceiling on data throughput.

We used a Dell 2400 server running Red Hat Linux 6.2 configured with 256MB of RAM-later reduced to 128 MB-to run the OpenBench Labs disk benchmark in order to gauge achievable data throughput from the HP NetStorage 6000. All tests of the NAS server used a RAID-5 volume, which was built using three 36GB disks.

Measuring actual disk throughput was complicated by the difficulty of isolating the effects of multiple data caches on the drives, RAID controller, HP NetStorage 6000, and Dell PowerEdge client system. These cache effects create orders-of-magnitude differences in disk-subsystem performance for differing workloads. By adjusting the size of the target file on the volume under test and adjusting the amount of memory available on the Dell server, we were able to defeat or enhance the effects of these caches on their respective systems.

While the graphs tell the full story of the performance results, here's the summary: The maximum performance we could muster from the entire system was only achieved when fully utilizing the data cache of the Dell PowerEdge server, which was used to access the HP NetStorage 6000. Only when using a data file smaller than the Dell's system memory did we measure effective throughput in the range of 65MBps to 70MBps.

We began running one process, which read a 384MB file sequentially using different read-block sizes. We chose this file size to minimize cache effectiveness on the HP and Dell systems, each of which had been configured with 256MB of RAM.

Surprisingly, we did not measure any significant differences in throughput based on block size. At a 2KB block size, throughput for one process was 5.08MBps, while at a 128KB block size, throughput surged to 5.11MBps. Normally, we would expect to see throughput monotonically increasing with block size.

Increasing the number of processes reading the file rapidly increased overall throughput, but varying the read block size never affected measured throughput. Using 8KB blocks, the most common I/O block size found in commercial applications, throughput ranged from 4.48MBps with one process up to 16.77MBps with 64 processes. While each process begins reading the file at a different location, increasing the number of processes increases the likelihood of inter-process cache hits on the Dell server and accounts for effective throughput reaching 30% higher than the theoretical network limit.

To establish a network-boundary condition, we defeated the cache in the Dell system by using a file significantly larger than the Dell's system memory, but smaller than HP NetStorage 6000 memory. In this configuration, we easily could saturate the network and achieve a stable data throughput of between 10MBps and 13MBps. In this test, we saw that the maximum load placed on the HP NetStorage 6000 CPU was only 20%. We expect that with so much headroom for performance scaling, throughput could be substantially improved with a faster fiber or Gigabit Ethernet interconnect.

The effective throughput of the HP SureStore NetStorage 6000 depends on caching on the client. With high client caching, effective throughput can reach 70MBps, which has little to do with the NAS server.

When client-side caching is defeated-in our tests we read a file too large to fit in cache-throughput is throttled by limits on network throughput.

With one process and no chance of caching, throughput hovered at 5MBps. This scaled perfectly with two processes as throughput doubled. As more processes were added, throughput rapidly converged on the network limit. As we significantly raised the number of simultaneous processes accessing the device from the same server, inter-process caching came into play and throughput exceeded network limits by 30%.

    Benchmarks go open source

By Keith WallsBenchmarks can simplify gathering performance profiles on your systems to gauge hardware and software requirements in metrics that relate to your needs. The goal of OpenBench Labs ( is to deliver a fair and technically rigorous way to compare everything from hardware devices to operating systems. Each month we'll present product reviews based on a benchmark suite that has evolved through 15 years of development.

While device and software manufacturers have used our benchmarks in the past, our target audience is CTOs, together with the people who support the IT decision-making process. The CTO is charged with ensuring that all hardware devices and software purchased are the best available for the organization.

Our goal is to supply the CTO's team with a steady flow of practical information to use when choosing hardware, software, platforms, and technology on which to base IT operations. That practical aspect to information is the most essential one. A tape drive manufacturer may produce a drive that in the laboratory accepts data at astonishing rates; however, theory is far less important than the practical data rate when that drive is installed in a system backing up actual data onto affordable media.

Ideally, the systems we choose as reference platforms-or reasonably close approximations to them-need to be instantly identifiable and have meaning for our readers. A tenth the speed of Deep Blue is no less obtuse as 10 times the speed of a PDP-11/45. The market, and not technological perfection, needs to guide the choice of reference platforms. For now, OpenBench Labs will focus on two operating systems on Intel-based platforms: Red Hat Linux (including compatible distributions) and Windows 2000.

More than any other software project benchmark code is necessarily built on shifting sands. Baselines age and become irrelevant as the techniques used in devices are constantly updated. What's more, benchmarks are somewhat unique in that the discovery of certain types of bugs can sometimes lead to wholesale revisions to the logic of the benchmark. As a result, the OpenBench Labs benchmark suite has always been a continual work-in-progress. That's why OpenBench Labs is making its benchmark suite a set of open-source projects for the operating systems mentioned above.

The OpenBench Labs benchmarks fall into three broad categories based on the computer subsystem that they are designed to test: CPU, memory, and I/O. While CPU benchmarks are concerned primarily with the resulting useful processing power of the system and memory benchmarks are concerned with the performance of access to memory, the I/O category captures all the benchmarks that pertain to getting data into and out of the system from disks or tape. Here, differences in operating system architecture, particularly in the area of data caching, play a significant role in performance and hence significantly complicate code compatibility across platforms.

One of the major focuses in the I/O benchmarks is the effective load that a disk subsystem can support. Here the goal is to measure how quickly data can be accessed by a maximal number of users. To this end, the benchmark attempts to flood the disk with I/O requests, and then measures the response time for each I/O. When the average access time exceeds 100 milliseconds for any user process, the disk is deemed saturated and the benchmark terminates with a report to the user.

Over the coming months, we will present the details of all these benchmarks in a series of Master Class articles. As we complete the first versions of each of the benchmarks, we will post them as open-source projects in the hope that we will attract contributors to our efforts. We are looking for contributions in all aspects of the benchmark series: new devices and software to test, new facets of products to investigate, improvements to the software, and reviews of software for completeness and correctness.

    OpenBench Labs summary

    Under examination:NAS server performance

    What we tested:

    HP SureStore NetStorage 6000

  • (6) 36GB disk drives
  • 256MB RAM
  • 100Mbps Ethernet network
  • How we tested:

  • Dell PowerEdge 2400 running Red Hat Linux v6.2
  • 3Com SuperStack II Switch
  • Click here to enlarge image

The default HP NetStorage 6000 system configuration presented three 36GB disk drives configured as a single RAID-5 volume. For testing, we attached through an NFS mount-point over a private 100Mbps Ethernet network. A Dell 2400 server running Red Hat Linux v6.2 was used for all performance evaluation. The Dell 2400 server was configured with 256MB of RAM for some tests, and reduced to 128MB for other tests.

    Key findings:

  • The HP NetStorage 6000 is easy to configure via its Web interface.
  • Provision for redundancy is excellent within the bounds of this class of system.
  • Security provisions are well designed and extremely well implemented.
  • CPU utilization peaked at only 20% due to network bandwidth limitations.
  • About our benchmark:The OpenBench Labs ldisk was used with a file sufficiently large to defeat the cache on both the HP NetStorage 6000 and the Dell PowerEdge 2400.
