The Chuwi Hi9 Air delivers high-end construct great and true elements like 4G connectivity in a sub-$200 tablet.
Chuwi's latest entry into the Android tablet market is a tool referred to as the Chuwi Hi9 Air. As its identify implies, the Hi9 Air is technically a mobile statistics-enabled member of the Hi9 family unit of drugs launched late remaining 12 months. youngsters, it's going to now not be wrong for any prior entries into the collection. definitely, this pill moves a ways beyond its namesake to convey a modern all-metallic design, a moderately powerful chipset, and quite a number different facets that negate any evaluation to its predecessor. in addition, it presents a easy Android 8.0 (Oreo) experience with a high diploma of familiarity and performance thanks to the stock nature of its application. There are, of direction, a few minor drawbacks that don't seem to be at all exceptional in an Android pill. With that stated, Chuwi's Hi9 Air is quite simply a top class entry at beneath $200 and smartly value a look for any one available in the market for a brand new tablet.
On the specs front, the Hi9 Air is a ten.1-inch Android eight.0 tablet with a sharp-developed display resolution of 2560 x 1600 and brightness rated at 400 nits. That’s packed into an all-metallic physique between with no trouble giant bezels and under a highly-optimized 5-megapixel front-dealing with digital camera and a lightweight sensor. typical, the gadget measures 241.7mm x 172.0mm x 7.9mm and tips the scales at 550g. relocating to the lower back, a Samsung-built 13-megapixel shooter is accompanied via an LED flash. A headphone jack is covered as well as an array of sensors, mic, twin-audio system, dual-LTE SIM ports, and a micro SD card slot. Our look at various variant became designed to work with U.S. cellular bands and featured a graceful black configuration, which looks to be the only available colour. past that, Bluetooth four.2 and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11a/ac/b/g/n permit for interconnectivity when off of the cellular records network.
Internally, the Chuwi Hi9 Air is pushed by a MediaTek X20 SoC. That’s a deca-core processor with a complete of two Cortex-A72 cores clocked at 2.3GHz, in addition to eight Cortex-A53 cores. The latter of those are split into two businesses of four, clocked at 1.85GHz and 1.4GHz respectively. Backing that up on the portraits side of the equation is a Mali-T880 GPU clocked at 780MHz. meanwhile, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage are part of the bundle. The latter is expandable as much as 128GB by means of micro SD card. An 8,000mAh battery powers all of that for a claimed 72-hours of standby and 5.5-hours beneath heavy use. reckoning on the retailer, the Chuwi Hi9 Air fees between $179.99 and $239.99.
in the field
Lifting the lid on the Chuwi Hi9 Air container reveals the tablet itself, first and most reliable, wrapped in plastic to stay away from hurt. The display is also outfitted with a factory-installed monitor protector on the way to should have its excellent-layer peeled lower back earlier than use. under the gadget, buyers will find a consumer manual, alongside a product inspection record, and a guaranty card slipped right into a neatly tucked away cardboard partition. simplest a micro USB to normal USB charging cable and wall adapter have been protected. The wall adapter is a standard U.S. plug, whereas other variations just about certainly ship with the acceptable plug category for the sockets often found in each and every respective region. The reliable product web page for the pill suggests that it is going to also have arrived with an OTG cable. although, our edition with U.S. band assist did not for whatever motive. it truly is not always an issue and can simply imply the further cable is never anything valued clientele in the country might be as likely to need or desire.
Hardware and Design
a few of Chuwi’s more contemporary efforts, together with remaining year’s fashioned Hi9, have intently resembled the first Nexus 7 pills when it comes to both appears and in-hand suppose. It may also be fortunately mentioned that with ease doesn’t raise over to the Chuwi Hi9 Air at all. in its place of a plastic physique and body, the device facets an all-metal body and body with numerous heft to make it think a great deal greater top rate than its price tag could indicate. The contours on the edges are also very easy to the contact and there aren’t any jagged edges anyplace. The materials prolong to the camera encompass. On the other facet, besides the fact that children no glass hardening is mentioned through the company, the entrance-dealing with digital camera sits underneath the panel. That should still support it face up to scratches very smartly, particularly if a display protector is used.
with regard to the hardware itself, every thing feels as notwithstanding it’s going to last. Any gaps within the build are kept to a naked minimum. Neither the charging port or the headphone jack has any wiggle when plugged in. those in fact think essentially as solidly developed as the buttons, which click on in and out of region along the right-hand aspect of the pill neatly, proposing a eager experience of satisfaction. In stark contrast to the different above-outlined Chuwi tablet, the Chuwi Hi9 Air feels basically find it irresistible became made through a very distinct business. average, there’s simply nothing low-priced about how this tablet looks or feels regardless of its sub-$250 pricing. Bearing that in mind, there's a plastic piece along the right of the Hi9 Air on the rear of the tablet. That clips off in order to install the SIM cards or a micro SD card earlier than being snapped lower back into area. These are micro SIM slots rather than the more general nano-SIM - proven in the pictures above for a dimension evaluation and utilized in most up to date handsets. So clients will wish to be sure that's what they may be using or that they have got a suitable SIM adapter. atmosphere that aside, the grooved floor of the plastic SIM housing does not take away from the universal design too an awful lot or seem to be too out-of-region right here.
The best of the hardware is not lost when it comes to the display both. taps, swipes, and different touches are as responsive as will also be expected from any Android tablet. apart from no longer being laggy within the slightest, shades displayed on the 2K panel are vibrant and deeper tones are as dark as any panel obtainable. That isn’t going to quite are living up to tremendous AMOLED however because of 4K video decoding, it is going to show every thing as crisply as another Android gadget on the market. moreover, a spotlight on brightness capability that the monitor is serviceable even below full daylight. The only precise downside to the reveal, in this case, is a scarcity of reveal hardening expertise since that isn't advertised at all by Chuwi. Bezels may be an argument, and will still be for some clients considering the fact that they aren't small by using any stretch of the imagination. With that said, here is a 10.1-inch tablet and, during this case, those truly provide users a straightforward approach to grip the Hi9 Air devoid of by accident interacting with the application.
efficiency and Battery lifestyles
in regards to performance, the deca-core MediaTek processor performs admirably. Our benchmark assessments exhibit that it is going to operate computations and practically sustain with correct flagship devices as recent as 2016 on most fronts. On the pix facet, it is now not rather the case however benchmarks infrequently inform the entire shop. for most video games and functions, there isn't going to be a great deal by the use of major lag. Of direction, it really is no longer impressive with consideration for the accurate SoC in use considering that these have been the gadgets it changed into meant to compete with. having said that, things do begin to fall apart with one of the vital more intensive modern smartphone video games and apps as a result of advances in hardware over the past two years. For some titles, reminiscent of Into The lifeless 2, settings are available to turn down pix points and that solves the issue smartly sufficient to play through with none complications. considering that this is almost a tablet on the lower end of the mid-range, it's now not in any respect bad. in short, the Chuwi Hi9 Air is going to deal with most of what the overwhelming majority of what the standard person will throw at it without a complaints.
Battery lifestyles, even so, will differ greatly from consumer to user. The Hi9 Air landed at simply over ten hours with display dimming became on in our benchmark look at various. That changed into with a modest CPU utilization of round 60-p.c. within the true world, that’s going to drop tremendously counting on the assignment at hand. The chipset in use right here permits the device to push individual projects to whichever core will optimally operate the project. when you consider that weaker cores consume up less battery life, this device may additionally do a great deal enhanced with lighter use. We discovered ten hours to be a bit of of an overstatement via round an hour beneath common use with gaming, video, music playback, and messaging all being part of the routine. once the tablet stopped functioning, micro USB capacity an extended charging time as neatly. From absolutely drained, the Chuwi Hi9 Air took just over 4 hours and fifteen minutes.
Connectivity and Audio
Audio could be one of the most only a few areas where the Chuwi Hi9 Air falls brief. a number of alternatives are available because of two speakers are embedded beneath a metallic speaker grill on either aspect along the excellent facet in addition to a three.5mm headphone port. in the meantime, Bluetooth four.2 is covered for instant audio playback. despite the fact, the speakers themselves go away quite an awful lot to be preferred when it comes to output and sound high-quality is mediocre. Lows are already essentially completely lost to the ear on account of overwhelming high tones however the center degrees seem to drown out even these. Conversely, there isn't any sign of crackling or an identical issues even at full volume. That may indicate greater of an optimization issue than a controversy with the speaker hardware. With that spoke of, it is not necessarily a pleasing journey, youngsters audio for notifications, alarms, and even telephone calls will nonetheless be first-rate. All of that, in the meantime, is mounted automatically upon plugging in a pair of headphones or speaker, even if via Bluetooth or wired.
Connectivity, on the other hand, is not limited in techniques it would usually be on an Android tablet. Most of that should be outlined together with different utility below. it is worth bringing up that phone calls and even SMS text messaging is possible as soon because the machine is install with a SIM card or playing cards. With that noted, Bluetooth 4.2 is covered in the package, youngsters NFC is not. moreover, Wi-Fi will also be used the place available when no cellular facts connection is attainable. We carried out our examine on T-cellular’s community by means of Straight speak and managed to get a 3G sign to make telephone calls and send messages. That worked as expected, youngsters with a degree of awkwardness as a result of the dimension of the pill in question. Our adaptation of the pill is designed to allow connections within the U.S. As is always the case with cell network-enabled contraptions, prospective consumers will wish to confer with their provider for band help before spending any money.
GSM: Bands 2, 3, 5, 8
WCMDA: Bands 1, 2, 5, eight
4G FDD-LTE: Bands 1, 2, three, 5, 7, 8, 20, 40
Chuwi's Hi9 Air ships with a very stock Android experience, including the usual Google purposes and no real bloatware. That equates to a easy, prevalent adventure standard and leaves loads of house in storage for applications and media. SMS messaging and contact calls are also feasible because of Android Messages and the AOSP telephone app being installed by using default. briefly, those apps and some different gadget-degree apps do seem very lots like they're supposed to be used on a a good deal smaller display. not all of the device apps endure that difficulty, it be crucial to word. basically its best apps that might continuously be found installed on a smartphone but not on a tablet. That offers off a distinct experience that portions of the developed-in application have been effectively not optimized for a ten.1-inch pill.
Tying returned into the comparatively minor software concerns listed simply above, the constructed-in camera is a type of apps with complications. specifically, the U.I. aspects are way outsized and somewhat blurry due to this fact. The application just does not rather fit in with the clear and subtle journey somewhere else on the pill. on the same time, it additionally makes it possible for some thing that isn't usually found in Android tablets in any respect. rather than relying completely on an AOSP camera with very primary performance, Chuwi comprises a full-fledged digital camera app. that is complete with overlay consequences, panorama mode, finer picture-tuning settings, LED flash controls, and even HDR mode.
That doesn't always equate to enhanced photos in every circumstance. although it works neatly enough in good lighting, low-mild pictures tend to seem to be either off-tone in colour or grainy and lacking in aspect. pictures which are inquisitive about too a good deal lights, meanwhile, tend to have a washed out appear, especially with HDR grew to become on. however, the 13-megapixel leading digicam is serviceable and somebody who is more skilled with adjusting guide settings will almost definitely be in a position to get better pictures.
Responsive excessive-decision 10.1-inch display
up to date all-steel body

Audio from built-in audio system could be each louder and more desirable optimized
Some application is optimized for cell-sized instruments
digital camera underperforms in sub-highest quality lighting
At can charge, the Chuwi Hi9 Air should at very least be the radar for anyone looking to purchase a new Android pill. inventory Android eight.0 and a nearly finished lack of bloatware, coupled with a decently optimized digital camera and moderate efficiency suggest that this will present a great event practically throughout the board. Its 10.1-inch kind component and cozy bezels add to that, while the most effective true drawbacks listed below are speakers and the finished lack of ruggedization. a superb shielding case and display protectors will resolve at least one of those concerns, whereas the other will also be circumvented with headphones or other audio gadgets. The Hi9 Air sets a worth benchmark a good way to truly be difficult to beat for any device in its expense tier.

A Georgetown Law professor recently told me that many of his students have switched to a security- and privacy-focused web browser called Brave. I decided to try it, and was pleasantly surprised. I was a bit late to the party I’ll admit–Brave has been around for four years–but I was far from alone: Brave users increased from 1 million to 5.5 million during 2018. That growth has come mainly through word of mouth.
What’s the draw? The point of Brave is to look, feel, and act much like Google’s market-leading Chrome browser while still aggressively protecting the security and privacy of the user’s personal data. The developers obviously went to a lot of trouble to remove as many friction points and trade-offs as possible for people coming over from Chrome, while keeping users safe from risky sites, ads, malware, and cookies that track you around the web. Brave is built on the same open source Chromium browser framework that is the foundation of Chrome.
I recently talked to Eich about Brave’s master plan at the company’s offices in San Francisco’s SOMA district.
Fast Company: What kinds of people are coming to Brave?
Brendan Eich: Among the lead users, you find multi-browser users that are some Chrome, some Firefox, and some Brave. They’ll say “I’m really” worried about privacy on these sites,” or “I can’t stand the ad overload on these sites, so I’ll use Brave for those.” But then they have a bookmark in Firefox that keeps them using it a little bit. They may use Chrome even though they’re aware of the problems; they may use uBlock Origin, which is a very good ad blocker. We’re trying to get them to use Brave full time and drop Chrome.
FC: It’s very apparent that you’ve removed a lot of friction for people who are coming from Chrome over to Brave. Are there any further steps to that that you think you have to do?
BE: One of the steps we can’t take that some users want is the Google account system because they like sharing their data that way. But if we turn that back on, we’re at great risk of people tracking our users. Another point of friction is just little look and feel things. People say, “You know what, Chrome has this.’ We’re already very close to the user interface, maybe too close in some ways–but they have this extra thing called Chromecast. I can Chromecast [stream to a TV or audio system] from Chrome and not from Brave. For some reason, Google and the open source [Chromium] has it off by default. So we’re turning it on.
These are little and easy to fix, but we’ve knocked down the big points of friction, mainly the extension ecosystem. You can load any Chrome extension. You go to the Chrome web store and it’ll say Install In Chrome, but it really is installing in your Brave instance that you’re running. We support all the extensions that aren’t using Google accounts or sync.
FC: Where will your near-future growth come from?
BE: Let’s say we have almost 6 million users. We’re going to get to 10 million in the middle of the year, we hope. That kind of scale will get you some law students. It will get you some mom-and-Pop users–people who are not tech savvy, but their kids are and they recommended it. They will not know what a blockchain is, but they will understand this idea of rewards or loyalty points. And you know, you have to go to tens of millions before you really get people who are more like the [mainstream]. We’ll get some of them now. It’s a statistical fact and as you grow you get more.
FC: How does Brave make money now, and what’s in the immediate future for developing the browser?
BE: This year we’re going to do some ads that the browser privately matches against your interests–all locally [on your device]–and puts them in the place that the publisher has arranged for us to have an ad. The ads are static, so we don’t hit the browser’s performance, we don’t hit page load, we don’t drain your battery, and they won’t look like these crazy flyover ads. But it will allow publishers to get the big revenue share. We give 70% to the owner of the ad space. And then we get the same 15% that we give to the user.
That’s why we use the triangle logo–you have users, advertisers, and publishers. This is something that hasn’t been fully tried. It’s complex. So it’s a multi-year mission. You have to do the browser, you have to do the token, you have to put them together. But so far so good.“We’re not going to just let you ride for free.”
FC: Can you drill down on how Brave’s token system works?
BE: If we’re blocking ads, publishers are not getting any revenue associated with that Brave user. So we thought, what can we do? And our users actually said to us “I never click on an ad, but I know I’m hurting my publishers a tiny bit even by blocking the impression-based ads–what can I do?” This was always the plan with Brave: We’re not just going to let you ride free. We’re not just going to be destructive to the publisher while helping the user. I think the user has the right to block. But let’s help the publisher, if the user consents, by giving the user a cryptographic token, a crypto currency that can be donated back to the publisher.
We started with bitcoin, but the problem we had with bitcoin was that you have to buy it. So we were asking the user out of their own goodwill to buy bitcoin to give back. And a lot of users won’t–nor should they. There’s a way to do this that doesn’t charge the user. It pays the user to give back. So we created the Basic Attention Token (BAT) based on Ethereum (an open-source blockchain-based computing platform) as a better alternative to bitcoin because we could do several things with it that bitcoin didn’t allow. The main one was we could pre-create a bunch of tokens.
Before we sold a billion, we created 500 million, and over 300 million of those were used to form a user growth pool that we can give to our users in small grants, and give to creators who refer new users. So we’re using it to build the ecosystem and deal the user back in. Some users buy the Basic Attention Token and they make a monthly commitment–sort of tithing to their favorite sites—but most users won’t. So we’re going to give them grants to get them going if they don’t want to donate.
Related: Incognito Mode won’t really keep you private. Do this instead“A user loyalty club in the browser”
FC: So that’s the token system. Now can you explain how the Brave ads work from a user point of view?
BE: I think of it as a user loyalty club in the browser. It’s like a little search engine text ad without the search results page. We time it not to annoy you so we look for keyboard activity in desktop operating systems. [For example] there’s going to be a notification promoting a camera we knew you were looking for, but not buying, online. If we can find a better deal or maybe a better camera, we can try to interest you in that notification. But no need to search: We can infer your interests from the totality of your data feeds in the browser. [It’s] all on-device, all local machine learning, nothing on our servers. We don’t want to see it. We don’t want to see your history. We want “can’t be evil” by cryptography and math, instead of “don’t be evil” by good will.
In our developer channel now you can get these ads. [We] have a bunch of ads running and people like them. Some of the ads I’ve seen are for a cryptographic currency wallet. Some of them are for a VPN. There’s some for techy sorts of products. We’re not charging the advertisers; this is a play-to-learn phase for a few months. And there’s a little CPM [cost per thousan[ model where even if you don’t click on it, or you dismiss it, there’s some value to that impression. If you do click on it, it opens a tab in the browser that is like the search ad landing page you’d get with a Google search ad.
FC: Is working on the model for publishers a fairly new thing for Brave, or were you thinking about that from the start?
BE: To get scale on this ecosystem, users became our first constituency, because we could give them a faster browser than Chrome and without all the nonsense. Publishers are hard. It’s enterprise. You keep telling them we’ve got a better way to deal with your ad-blocking user base because some of them have 30% of their monthly unique users using ad blockers. You need to turn those [users] around. Some of them would pay, some of them would donate back, some of them would [click] a private ad and give the revenue share back. It’s been a hard sell. They aren’t that technical. They see us as the enemy because we block ads by default. So I knew from even from Mozilla times learning about ad tech and talking to publishers they were going to be slow to convince.
[Later this year Brave plans to offer publisher-integrated, Private Ads. Publishers will work directly with Brave to place the ads within their sites or channels, and they’ll receive 70% of the revenue share. That, Brave points out, is a much higher percentage than what they currently get from programmatic ad placements.]“Privacy matters more situationally”
FC: Do you think people care more about convenience than they do about personal data privacy? Is that changing?
BE: You have to test it. People say “I don’t care about privacy.” And you’ll say, give me your unlocked phone. And they’lI say, “Wait a minute, no, I’m not giving you my unlocked phone!” Young people who might say they don’t care were for years doing dissolving messages on Snapchat, whether for naughty purposes or not. So they cared. Now you’re seeing all the messaging apps claim to be end-to-end encrypted. So you see that privacy matters more situationally, if we’re messaging–especially with sensitive messages. It matters more as you see people discover data breaches or people who are mad at Facebook as they think it facilitated bad political outcomes. And that’s not going away.
FC: Privacy is obviously one big problem with the digital advertising industry, but I know you’re concerned about eliminating ad fraud, too.
[If] there’s a demand-side platform–there often is–it takes separate fee. There may be some other players, so called supply-side platforms that help find the ad the best slot on the publisher page or amongst a set of publishers. All those intermediaries take fees, so do they care if it’s fraud? They get paid either way. They have perverse incentives. So the money that’s left over for the publisher and the media owners, the IAB [Interactive Advertising Bureau] estimates, is 55% at present. It’s more like 20% to 40% depending on how fraud costs are reckoned. You end up with this very inefficient market that leaks data, that facilitates fraud, and that’s also used to distribute malware.
FC: What effect has privacy legislation like the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) had on that whole programmatic ad ecosystem?
BE: There have been GDPR fines for smaller players. This is hilarious because it just shows you how the system just leaks user data all over. I believe we’re going to have all the European countries saying the real-time bidding process that’s used for modern digital advertising is a huge data breach under GDPR because it broadcasts your latitude, longitude, and personal identifiers in terms of segments you’re bucketed into, like you’re looking for a certain in medical solution that may be very private or embarrassing. You’re looking for something related to your kids that shouldn’t be leaked. Personal data is being broadcast.
There have been other fines but they haven’t hit the big ones, Google and Facebook, and I think they will, it’s just a matter of time. I think the regulators don’t want to muff it.
In-DepthSystem Center 1801 Is Here
A look at what's new in Virtual Machine Manager (VMM), Data Protection Manager (DPM) and Operations Manager (SCOM), for your virtualized infrastructure, either Hyper-V or VMware.
The first release of what Microsoft is planning as a twice-a-year release cycle for System Center Semi-Annual Channel (SAC) was just released. This cadence matches the twice a year new release of Windows Server.
In this article I'm going to look at what's new in Virtual Machine Manager (VMM), Data Protection Manager (DPM) and Operations Manager (SCOM), for your virtualized infrastructure, either Hyper-V or VMware.
Just like with Windows Server, there's a Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) with a five-year mainstream support cycle (bug fixes, new features and security fixes), followed by another five years of extended support (bug and security fixes only). The new SAC flavor is an alternative to LTSC and you need to look very carefully at your company's business needs before going down this track, as each release is only supported for 18 months, so you're going to be upgrading much more frequently. Note that the LTSC branch will keep getting updates in the form of Update Releases (URs) but that new features will mainly be targeted at the SAC branch.
Virtual Machine ManagerVMM 1801 supports both Windows Server 2016 and the SAC version 1709 as is to be expected, along with some new features in the OS that didn't make it into VMM 2016.
Nested Virtualization is one of those features, so you can now create a VM in VMM (or set it up in templates) with this turned on, allowing the VM in turn to be a virtualization host (see Figure 1). Unless you're running a training center (where Nested Virtualization is incredibly useful) I suspect the main reason for this would be to create Windows container hosts through VMM.[Click on image for larger view.] Figure 1. Nested Virtualization in Virtual Machine Manager.
Storage Quality of Service (QoS) was expanded massively in Windows Server 2016, unfortunately VMM 2016 only supported it for VHD/VHDX files on Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) and Scale out File Server (SOFS) clusters, not SANs. QoS policies also could only be scoped on a per-array basis. VMM 1801 can apply storage QoS on all storage and the policies can also be included in templates and be applied to VMM clouds.
Remoting to VMs can now be done over Enhanced Session mode in Hyper-V. Refreshing properties of hosts in VMM can be up to 10x faster.
Much of the work done in Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V was focused on the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) stack and a lot of that made it into VMM 2016. This new release adds some polish such as the ability to define Virtual IPs (VIPs) for the Software Load Balancer (SLB) in templates instead of only through PowerShell. The SLB now also supports internal load balancing (just like in Azure) and for guest clustering support it incorporates floating IPs where the SLB knows which node is active and routes traffic from the external VIP to the that node. HTTP or TCP health monitoring is now also built into the SLB (see Figure 2).[Click on image for larger view.] Figure 2. HTTP and TCP health monitoring are built-in to the Software Load Balancer.
Encryption of all network traffic on a VM network is just a tickbox away (see Figure 3). The only prerequisite is to distribute a certificate (internal CA or self-signed) to each host. This protects the network against network sniffing but not against fabric admins. Apparently network protection against fabric admins is coming, which would bring network protection in line with the host protection offered through Shielded VMs.[Click on image for larger view.] Figure 3. Easy network protection is only a tickbox away.
Speaking of Shielded VMs, this is now extended to Linux VMs (running on Windows Server 1709) and VMs can be defined with a Host Guardian Service (HGS) failback in case the primary cluster is offline. Shielded VMs is a big topic, if you're interested I presented on VMM 2016 at Ignite, with additional resources here.
The current plug-in for VMM to manage Azure VMs only supported the old flavor (ASM-based) whereas 1801 now provides the ability to manage your Azure Resource Manager (ARM)-based VMs, too.
There's a little bit of love for VMware, too, with the ability to convert an EFI VM to a Hyper-V generation 2 VM from vSphere (ESXi) 4.1, 5.0, 5.1, 5.5 and 6.0.
The main thing still missing from VMM is a rewrite of the services deployment engine. Public Azure and Azure Stack build on ARM, which is becoming a critical skill for IT professionals, whereas VMM still has its own, graphical service template designer. If this was rewritten to support ARM, the same skills would be applicable across all three environments.
System Center Operations Manager (SCOM)The headline feature in this release of SCOM is the new HTML5 Web console. Microsoft has been moving this console to HTML5 for some time, but the dashboards were still relying on Silverlight in SCOM 2016. This version finally sheds that baggage (although you can still get to the old dashboards if you really want to at http://server/Dashboard); the new dashboards supports Alert, State, Performance, Topology, Tile and Custom widgets.
A nice touch is the ability to expand a dashboard to full screen -- useful if your NOC is plastered with large screens. You can export a custom dashboard by exporting the management pack (MP) in which it's stored. Dashboards can be customized, and a user accessing the Web console can also chose to personalize settings -- note that these are stored in that browser so if you open the Web console on another device your personalizations won't appear there.
The Topology widget lets you import a diagram from Visio or other sources and drag your health state icons on top of the diagram to create network/geographical diagrams with health information.
The new widgets also support drilling down from the overview to a more focused view. For instance, from an Alert view you can drill down to a specific alert and then to the rule that generated the alert.
Adding custom knowledge for your company no longer requires Word and access to the Operations Console, you can simply use the built-in editor in the widgets. More information on these new dashboards can be found on the SCOM Team Blog.
With Microsoft claiming back the responsibility for the catalog of first- and third-party Management Packs (MPs) in SCOM 2016 and providing an Updates (did you know there's a new version of your MP release?) and Recommendations (we see you're running this, perhaps you'd like to download this MP?) feature, in 1801 this extends to third-party MPs, as well.
SCOM 1801 continues the integration with Operations Management Suite (OMS), this time extending to Service Map. This is a technology (originally acquired from BlueStripe software) which essentially automates the discovery of dependencies in distributed applications and creates the diagrams automatically, something you had to do manually in earlier SCOM versions.
Sometimes that data gets spliced, scattered and consolidated across a web of collaborators, researchers and advertisers. Acxiom, for instance, claims 1,500 data points for each of the 500 million people in its database, including most US adults. Just in the past few months, Facebook was reported to have asked hospitals, including Stanford University School of Medicine, to share and integrate patients' medical data with its own (the research project has since been put on hold). In April, gay dating app Grindr was revealed to have shared customers' HIV status with two app-optimization companies. And who suspected completing an online personality test would pave the way for President Donald Trump's targeted political advertising?
In short, the close relationships we have with our devices are not monogamous. But what's a privacy-valuing citizen who still wants or needs to partake in our fabulously networked 21st-century society to do?
There likely could not be a more timely moment for the public to care about the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Union's superlatively complex, contested, sweeping data-privacy law that came into force on May 25th.
Its key rights include access to personal data, explanations of the algorithms that shape citizens' lives, portability (or moving your data from one company to another) and deletion. Years in the making, it affects any global organization's business in the European Union, leading companies worldwide to spend millions of dollars bringing their privacy standards into compliance, in some cases standardizing their practices outside the EU too.
So we decided to test the system. A team of nine Engadget reporters in London, Paris, New York and San Francisco filed more than 150 subject access requests -- in other words, requests for personal data -- to more than 30 popular tech companies, ranging from social networks to dating apps to streaming services. We reached out before May 25th -- when previous laws for data access existed in the EU -- as well as after, to see how procedures might have changed.
The EU has had a data-protection directive since 1995, yet studies have repeatedly shown that its rights weren't well-enforced. The GDPR has been law since 2016, yet it only grew teeth this May, with companies now open to fines of up to 4 percent of global annual revenue.
The EU has had a data-protection directive since 1995, yet studies have repeatedly shown that its rights weren't well-enforced.
Indeed, the history of data privacy is really a tale of violation without meaningful justice. For example, hacked credit agency Equifax is still in business, and its customers can't even cut ties with it if they wish to. In the UK, Facebook was fined £500,000 ($640,000) for its role in the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the maximum sum under laws at the time of the incident -- but also equal to the amount of cash the company makes every 5.5 minutes.
If the same thing happened today, Facebook could be hit with fines potentially in the billions of dollars. Already, about 1,000 US-based news websites including the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune are inaccessible in the EU, and in a recent Deloitte survey only about a third of organizations could say they were fully compliant.
The hope is that the GDPR will be a gold standard for how to feasibly check the power of big tech companies whose market value dwarfs the GDP of some of the countries trying to hold them accountable.
We contacted companies by email or through their websites when they specified a method in their privacy policies, or we sent a letter when they didn't. (Instagram, for instance, only added an email address for data requests on May 25th and didn't reply to our mailed request.) Our letter was a modified version of the template on the UK Information Commissioner's Office's website, quoting directly from the relevant laws. We asked for information on what data was held on us, where it came from, who it's been sent to and how we've been profiled, among other questions.
Our requests were made from personal email and home addresses, in an effort to be treated as much like regular consumers as possible. In most cases, we sent follow-up questions identifying ourselves as reporters.
"Data requests are a window into the soul of on organization," said Hadi Asghari, an assistant professor at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, whose research has shown how little EU access laws have been adhered to in recent years. And we made unexpected discoveries: the distorted, fun house mirror profile that Acxiom held on one reporter; a kink app with lax security practices; a dating service that sent us a stranger's data. But we also saw the wildly divergent extents to which companies are adjusting to the GDPR. Personal information is the commodity that fuels the big data economy, and like all commodities, there's a fight for its control.
Data retrievalHow big tech manages your personal information
There is an elephant in the room to address here: Understanding data privacy is fundamentally boring, if not unintelligible, to a regular user.
This touches on what academics call the digital-privacy paradox. When polled, people say they care deeply about privacy, but in reality, they will give up their data or even the email addresses of their friends in exchange for something as trivial as a pizza.
It's with this in mind that we waded through all sorts of corporate responses to our data requests: emails, Excel spreadsheets, data-download tools. Beyond simply what was given to us, would it be understandable, even meaningful?
Netflix, for instance, provided full glossaries for its tables of data in a single PDF.
Beyond simply what was given to us, would the data be understandable, even meaningful?
Spotify, in contrast, provided its data through an online-download function. Inside, one UK-based reporter received 101 JSON files, and another received 90. While admirably comprehensive, these are dumps from databases normally read by computers: There's no way to reasonably make sense of the file names, let alone their plain-text contents. Spotify Customer Service did not provide full explanations of the file names, and a spokeswoman said while we could ask about specific data fields, the company did not have a glossary for all of its files.
(A third reporter who made an identical request from the US received only seven files with basic information like payment methods, playlists and followers. The spokeswoman said that "there are no differences to the information shared based on countries" and that worldwide users could request additional files by contacting customer service, but this interaction points to an obvious conundrum: How do you ask for files that you don't know exist?)
Instagram, too, offered its data -- aside from copies of photos and videos -- in reams of plain-text JSON files, which a spokeswoman justified as a more portable format. The right to portability, however, is separate from the right to access one's data.
At least it provided some information. Dating app Bumble sent a UK reporter nothing more than basic personal info (name, age, language), the photos he'd uploaded and the last year of IP addresses and login times. A request from a US-based reporter went unanswered for more than a month; the company eventually provided data 12 weeks later.
The Article 29 Working Party, formerly a nonbinding guidance group made of EU representatives and data experts, has said that "language qualifiers such as 'may', 'might', 'some', 'often' and 'possible' should... be avoided" in replying to data requests. Legally, the GDPR demands that any communication is "in a concise, transparent, intelligible and easily accessible form, using clear and plain language." Yet we found this to be incredibly inconsistent.
Researchers made a similar conclusion in July. An artificial intelligence analysis of 14 privacy policies (including those from Amazon, Microsoft and Uber) developed by the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and the European University Institute in Florence found that a third of clauses were "potentially problematic" or provided insufficient information.
