Customizing the ovw GUI is both bendy and simple. Many customizations, akin to adding submap backgrounds, automated design of symbols, symbol hiding, and creation of executable symbols, will also be achieved from inside the ovw GUI. This chapter will show you ways. This chapter is from the e-book
One compelling factor of NNM is that the administrator can personalize submaps from in the GUI. one of the customizations encompass including background photos, saving window placement, hiding symbols, and developing MIB functions. whereas advanced customizations require file modifying, NNM provides the pliability to present each primary and advanced customizations devoid of supply code amendment and re-compilation. in fact, many changes may also be made on the fly without exiting the NNM GUI or restarting techniques.
Sealey Inc. has a requirement to be in a position to make use of geographical bitmaps and consumer ground plans. they would want to vicinity definite instruments in a specific region representing the actual locations of the instruments. certain contraptions are mission vital and they would want to configure the GUI with quick access to those instruments. youngsters, as a result of each and every operator has different tasks, they consider diverse devices to be mission critical. for this reason, every operator can also want a a little distinctive view of the community.
Sealey Inc. would additionally like to be in a position to graph SNMP MIB records precise-time. certain operators may additionally often be required to entry records from the equal MIB variables. The network application should deliver the capability to easily graph MIB information. This chapter details customizing NNM from the GUI.
Submaps may be custom-made on a per-map basis to allow every NNM consumer to focus on specific needs. for instance, a selected user may wish to see the systems placed geographically on a submap based on the region by which the systems physically live. A person could also need to create customized icons in an effort to launch commonly used applications. the following sections include probably the most common map customizations.6.1.1 environment the Default Map and residential Submap
The user default map is the map this is open when a person starts the NNM GUI. If the specification of the default map is not modified, the map named "default" may be opened. The administrator can create as many maps as crucial, confined most effective through disk space. generally talking, remember to under no circumstances make customizations to the default map. a stronger apply would be to make a replica of the default map, saving it below a brand new name. Customizations should then be made to this new map. After making customizations to a map (reminiscent of background portraits, auto-layout, and so on), you may additionally wish to set this map as your user default map. The user can set his default map with the aid of performing right here:
choose from the menu bar Map→Open. .
choose the map you would love as your default (see figure 6-1).
figure 6-1 select Map→Open from the menu bar to set the consumer default map. choose the map name and click on the [Set User Default] button. The consumer Default Map shown right here is the map named "default."
click on the [Set User Default] button.
When a map is opened, the primary submap to be displayed is the home submap. The domestic submap is additionally without difficulty accessible by using choosing the "condo" icon on the toolbar. by way of default, the domestic submap is decided to the basis submap. The domestic submap should be set to the submap you access most often. each map can also have a distinct home submap. To set the home submap, navigate to your favourite submap and choose from the menubar Map→Submap→Set This Submap as domestic.
which you could now use the toolbar icon to return to the domestic submap at any time. A user may additionally have as many maps as preferred and each map can have a special home submap.
Unused maps start to contain stale topology information because the NNM topology database is up to date over time. Even when ovtopofix and ovw –mapcount are run, you may additionally encounter errors, reminiscent of "objects nevertheless in four maps." with a purpose to proper this error, each and every map must be opened in order that it synchronizes the current topology suggestions into the map. each and every map can either be opened personally or with a script run as root on the NNM server, depending on the number of maps you need to open to synchronize.
do not open maps in NNM which are created through OVO! here instance "greps out" two default OVO maps:export display=displayhostname:0.0 for map in 'ovwls –x | egrep –v "opcadm|opcop" ` do ovw –map $map & performed
examine to be sure that each map changed into opened with study/write privileges. The map will now not synchronize devoid of being opened with study/write privileges. After the synchronization of the maps, run ovw –mapcount. This should still run devoid of error.6.1.2 Submap Overlay, Window Geometry, and image Hiding
Many customizations may be made to a map, together with the behavior of the submap overlay. by way of default, in the event you drill down via a map's hierarchy by double clicking, the newborn submap of the selected object replaces the current submap. Likewise, in the event you click the up arrow icon from the toolbar, the mother or father submap of the existing submap replaces the newborn. This prevents the person from having too many open submaps. if you opt for not to have this submap overlay characteristic became on, that you may modify this conduct on each a map and a submap foundation with the aid of deciding on from the menu bar
one more consumer customization is the capability to store window size and placement. for example, if you opt for the IP internet submap on the left facet of your display screen and a particular node-level submap on the right side, effectively alter the submap overlay to open distinct submaps, organize the submap size and site to your liking, and keep the window geometry via choosing View→Window Geometry→store For All Open Submaps.
further customizations may also be made for private preferences. not all NNM users wish to see the equal view of the network. for example, a community manager can also under no circumstances need to see individual workstations or servers. through hiding symbols that you would be able to alleviate undesirable clutter from her view of the network. Hidden objects are nonetheless actively polled but their repute usually are not mirrored on the maps during which they are hidden. If the community manager hides non-networking contraptions, she can not see when hidden instruments are down through comfortably glancing on the applicable submap. however, hiding a tool doesn't prevent the Node Down event from being despatched to the Alarm Browser.
To cover symbols, first opt for them after which choose from the menu bar View→Hidden Objects→conceal chosen From This Submap.
The fame line on the bottom of every submap shows the number of hidden objects on the current submap, as shown in determine 6-2. You may additionally have a necessity to cover a specific category of object. as an instance, you might also want to hide all windows techniques because they're all DHCP contraptions that appear to go down commonly. follow these steps to disguise all systems which have a common attribute such because the working gadget:
look for the article by the attribute.
Edit→find→Object by using image class. .
select desktop type windows NT subclass and click on the [Apply] button.
Double-click on one of the crucial gadgets listed below the "located and Highlighted" area.
opt for the gadgets that were discovered.
hide the objects that were chosen.
View→Hidden Objects→conceal selected From This Submap
Hidden objects may also be unhidden at any time by way of making a choice on
View→Hidden Objects→reveal Hidden On This Submap
recall that the submap hierarchy is

word that the listing includes the phase submap (objects) as well as node submaps. To extra promptly and with ease conceal the preferred objects (in this case, windows NT nodes) we may still pay attention to the segment submaps. in the event you double-click on one of these, you are presented with the applicable child submap which has all NT nodes "highlighted' (highlighted labels are displayed in reverse video).
while hiding objects is a method to take care of unwanted instruments, filtering is a extra based method of dealing with "undesirable" objects. A filter can be applied to on a per-map groundwork, which hides objects from the view while permitting them to exist within the object database and be actively polled. This type of filter is called a map filter. while the outcomes of making use of a map filter is akin to hiding objects, the implementation is continually a whole lot quicker and greater beneficial. different kinds of filters consist of topology and discovery filters, which can be discussed in aspect in Chapter 9, "Scalability and Distribution."6.1.3 surroundings background images and computerized layout
background snap shots can be used to enhance the appearance of a submap. They will also be used to reveal geographic regions, flooring plans, or organizational buildings. a couple of file formats are supported for submap heritage pictures. when you've got a file that isn't in the list, determine the release Notes for at the moment supported file formats. Supported file formats for heritage photos are listed in desk 6-1.desk 6-1. File types supported by NNM for submap heritage photos.
historical past pix may well be configured for a submap via following these steps:
choose Map→Submap→properties from the menu bar.
click the [Browse. . ] button listed with the aid of the history snap shots portion of the dialog field. here is found on the View tab for windows.
choose a photo as proven in the listing of determine 6-3.
figure 6-3 The administrator can set a background graphic for each submap. lots of the supplied pictures include geographic places. The administrator can additionally import a custom graphic such as a flooring plan.
One issue to be aware when setting heritage pics is the volume of actual memory (RAM) you have got on your NNM device. for those who open a map, all objects, including background photos, are loaded into reminiscence . The more objects within the database, the greater memory required to load objects into reminiscence. in a similar fashion, the more complex the photograph, the more memory required. a method to inform in case your system is memory-sure is if the synchronization system takes a long time (greater than a few minutes) if you happen to open a map. If synchronization is taking too long, are attempting lowering the variety of objects being loaded into reminiscence. a technique to obtain here's by means of altering the persistence degree of your map.188.8.131.52 Submap Persistence
The persistence level of a submap indicates the level at which objects are loaded into reminiscence. if you opt for any choice aside from All levels, the objects acting on submaps below that level don't seem to be loaded into memory except you open that selected submap. which you could define the persistence stage of a map with the aid of following these steps.
select the map properties.
select IP Map and click [Configure For This Map. . ]
Scroll down to the part that reads
On-Demand: To what level should submaps be persistent.
select one of the vital tiers:
phase level and higher
community degree and higher
cyber web degree
After identifying the persistence degree, click on [Verify] and [OK] within the IP Map configuration dialog field and [OK] in the Map houses dialog container.
Any modifications you're making to a submap will trigger it to become a persistent submap, inspite of the persistence environment. for example, in case you set your map persistence degree to the segment level and better, best the root, web, and network level objects can be loaded into memory. youngsters, in case you make any of right here changes to a section or node degree submap, you'll cause that submap to turn into persistent:
Any objects contained in the submaps which have customizations comparable to these might be loaded into reminiscence whenever the map is open. As one other example, if you set your persistence level to cyber web level and set a history photograph on every submap, you defeat the aim of setting the persistence stage.6.1.three.three computerized layout
The aim of automatic layout is to enable a device discovered through NNM to have its symbols placed on a submap without human intervention. When the usage of heritage photographs, you may locate that you would want to manually handle the location of symbols. When placing objects on a floor plan, as an instance, you could flip off auto design and region the symbols where they physically stay. to show off computerized design for an individual submap, select View→computerized design→Off For This Submap as proven in figure 6-4.
determine 6-4 This submap has been configured with Georgia because the background graphic. NNM ships with a GIF file for each US state and many countries. turn off computerized layout to permit manual placement of symbols.
After you flip auto layout off, observe that [Auto-Layout] is removed from the fame line and a "New Object holding area" looks on the backside of the submap, as shown in figure 6-5. When new gadgets are discovered that belong on a submap the place auto design is became off, the newly discovered objects are placed in the New Object conserving enviornment. You should drag the brand new objects from the new Object maintaining enviornment and drop them onto the preferred vicinity on the submap.
determine 6-5 the new Object maintaining enviornment is created when automatic design is became off. Newly discovered devices are positioned in the New Object retaining area. They may also be manually positioned on a submap by using drag-and-drop.6.1.four Partitioning the cyber web Submap
NNM is aware of how to lay out gadgets according to the assistance provided through SNMP queries. The submap hierarchy from right to backside is
The design of your network may also be personalized on the internet degree submap. The goal is to permit partitioning of your network in keeping with geographical or logical tips. NNM does an excellent job of offering the physical connections of your community however makes no assumptions as to the organizational structure. This customization is called partitioning the internet submap.
Partitioning the information superhighway submap requires that you add a unique category of symbol called a region symbol. The steps to partition the IP information superhighway submap are as follows:
From the information superhighway submap choose
select the place image (figure 6-6) and drag any of the subclass symbols to the submap.
determine 6-6 location objects will also be used to partition the IP information superhighway submap. notice the vicinity objects added to the submap shown (Japan and Australia) are in the utility airplane (no shading appears around the image).
supply a Label and click [OK].
Repeat the creation of area icons except you've got defined all fundamental places.
Drag each and every image and drop it in the favored vicinity. Connections will instantly be dependent between place symbols as proven in determine 6-7.
figure 6-7 When partitioning the internet submap, connections between the locations are automatically centered as symbols are moved into the vicinity icons.
location icons may also be cascaded when partitioning the internet submap. for example, you may add us of a at the information superhighway degree, add State below u . s ., and add metropolis below State, after which add building, web site, Room, and so on.6.1.5 developing Executable Symbols
by using default, symbols on a submap spawn a child submap when double clicked. This behavior is referred to as "explodable." image houses on a submap may be modified to launch an utility when double-clicked in place of opening a child submap. This conduct is called "executable." a few pre-defined applications exist and are purchasable in NNM. in reality, most functions obtainable from the menu bar and the toolbar can be utilized in developing executable symbols. These functions are described in NNM through utility Registration info (ARFs). in addition to the use of the pre-defined applications, which you could create your personal purposes by defining ARFs as discussed in Chapter 7, "superior Customization."
to make use of the executable symbol feature in NNM, observe the steps listed here. For this instance, use a device that makes it possible for incoming telnet sessions.
access the symbol properties by using right-clicking and deciding upon image homes as shown in determine 6-8.
figure 6-eight the first step in making an icon executable is to area the cursor over the symbol, click on the right mouse button, and select symbol homes. . from the symbol popup menu.
regulate the symbol behavior to Execute, as shown in figure 6-9. word the checklist of purposes that seem under the part labeled "utility motion."
determine 6-9 The second step in making an icon executable is to alter the behavior of the symbol to Execute and select to utility to be launched.
Scroll during the listing and choose the software
Terminal connect: XTerm Telnet
click the [Target Objects. . ] button.
click the [Add] button to consist of the hostname and click [OK] on the goal Objects dialog container as proven in figure 6-10.
figure 6-10 The third step in growing an executable icon is to click on the [Target Objects] button, which displays the dialog container shown. select the [Add] button so as to add the hostname as a goal object.
click on [OK] on the image homes dialog container and you'll see the executable symbol as proven in figure 6-11. When the symbol is double clicked it launches a telnet session to the device.
figure 6-11 The executable icon (r208w100) indicates up as a button. Double-click it to launch the utility. that you can additionally drag a logo and drop it on the button to launch the application on an additional object.
upon getting created an executable symbol, you can drag other symbols and drop them onto the executable image. as an example, in case you want to launch telnet on a different system, quite simply drag the symbol and drop it onto the executable image. Making a symbol "executable" does not affect the symbol popularity set by using ipmap. there's one caveat when changing an existing image's habits to executable. After altering an existing image to executable, you will now not be able to access the image's baby submap with the aid of double clicking the symbol. as a substitute, the only solution to access the baby submap of the symbol is to use the submap open characteristic. you could do that by way of selecting Map→Submap→Open. . you will deserve to drill down in the course of the submap listings to locate the modified image's submap. choose the modified symbol and click on the [Open Submaps] button. due to this, that you would be able to also create standalone symbols that launch applications. It isn't fundamental to adjust the habits of an present symbol.6.1.6 MIB purposes
most of the alternatives from the device and menu bar entry purposes that communicate with the MIB. When launched, these purposes ship SNMP queries to the chosen node to access certain MIB variables. Some functions create tables that contain the facts and others generate precise-time graphs. NNM gives many constructed-in MIB purposes as well as the potential to create your own MIB functions by way of the GUI.184.108.40.206 developed-in MIB applications
Most MIB purposes require you to opt for a node before launching. If nothing is selected, the menu items will be grayed out and unavailable. Let's examine one of the developed-in MIB purposes. opt for a node and choose from the menu bar efficiency→network activity→Interface traffic: Packet expense as shown in determine 6-12. this could reveal a true-time graph of the MIB variables for packet fee.
figure 6-12 Interface site visitors is a built-in MIB application available from the menu bar. choose a node and choose network recreation→Interface traffic: Packet rate from the menu bar. This initiates snmpgets for selected MIB variables and displays them graphically.220.127.116.11 creating MIB functions
NNM offers the means to create MIB purposes that may be included into the NNM menu bar. This will also be carried out through the use of the MIB utility builder.
The MIB software builder lets you create custom graphs and tables by means of defining the MIB variables you want to be displayed.
observe these steps to create your MIB graph:
opt for alternate options→MIB application Builder: SNMP from the menu bar. This displays an empty MIB application dialog box as proven in determine 6-13.
figure 6-13 To create a MIB software, opt for alternatives→MIB application Builder: SNMP from the menu bar. The listing might be empty by using default. select Edit?Add MIB software. . .
choose Edit→Add MIB utility. . . you'll see the dialog box as proven in figure 6-14.
figure 6-14 Specify the software id, application category, software Title, Menu direction and click the [Add. . ] button.
finished the following fields to outline the MIB application:
utility id— This should be a unique identity no longer containing spaces or particular characters. For this example, use InVSOut
utility classification— Set this to table, form, or graph. For this example specify graph.
software Title— name the utility whatever you want. this can include areas and special characters. For this instance, specify "In Packets VS Out Packets".
Menu route— This describes the cascaded menu bar for the application beginning with the suitable-degree menu. This can also additionally comprise spaces. Use "->" to indicate cascading menus. For this illustration, specify yourname customized Apps→In VS Out
option Rule— The preference Rule describes the node type for which this application will work. except you're standard with the filtering language described in Chapter 9, it is foremost to go away it set to the default. The default selection Rule (isSNMPSupported || isSNMPProxied) will feature on any device that supports SNMP or has an SNMP proxy.
click on the [Add. . ] button to outline the MIB variables for the software.
Traverse the MIB tree to consist of the MIB variables for the software. Use the handle key and left mouse click on simultaneously to select the preferred variables. This illustration makes use of the MIB variables ieeeMacTransmitted and ieeeMacFramesReceived shown in determine 6-15 beneath the MIB subtree deepest.firms.hp.nm.interface .ieee8023Mac.ieee8023MacTable.ieeeMacEntry
figure 6-15 be sure to be everyday with the MIB tree structure to be able to create MIB functions. Press the control key and left click on simultaneously to select assorted variables.
After making a choice on the desired variables, click [OK] from the Add MIB Objects dialog container.
click [OK] from the Add MIB utility dialog box. remember to see your custom menu as shown in figure 6-16. You at the moment are ready to execute your software.
figure 6-16 choose the node on which to execute the newly created MIB utility. opt for the software from the menu bar designated in the Menu course of the MIB software builder.
After you've created an MIB application it turns into an NNM registered software. The MIB utility can now be used when creating executable symbols. Add an object to a submap, alternate the behavior to executable, and determine the record for your utility. An application Registration File (ARF) is created for those who define an MIB utility.
Hewlett-Packard has been delving deeper and deeper into crossplatform enterprise systems management, via a sequence of technology investments in OpenView. Now, users and analysts are really feeling the affect.
When it comes to heterogenous environments, OpenView is a strong participant, based on invoice Emmett, options manager at HP. "OpenView compares favorably to IBM Tivoli and CA-Unicenter on the foundation of each can charge effectiveness and modular, plug-and-play structure," he contends. other than its myriad API interfaces, Emmett emphasizes OpenView's aid for myriad operating methods and dissimilar "open necessities."
Emmett's enthusiasm is never extraordinary, considering carriers typically tout their personal items. Some users and analysts, though, are equally gung-ho.
Tim Hagan, VP of IT operations and engineering for Zurich lifestyles, says it took him and a few different americans less than 90 days to set up OpenView in a fancy name middle environment.
Zurich life is the usage of OpenView to manage about a hundred and ten servers and 65 databases in two actual locations. The systems are working HP-UX, solar Solaris, IBM AIX, and Microsoft home windows 2000, NT, and XP. Zurich is working OpenView on HP-UX servers, but the methods administration platform runs on sun Solaris and Microsoft windows servers, too.
now not "just a network Node manager"When Hagan first came to Zurich existence in January of 2000, the insurance firm become nevertheless the usage of HP's historic community Node manager. "That become some of the causes i was hired. It did not harm that i'd had prior success with OpenView in an prior job. I knew that OpenView has a very open structure, and that it might very quickly tie in with our (other) current platforms and equipment," in keeping with Hagan.
The current OpenView product does encompass network Node supervisor as one in every of its myriad non-compulsory modules. Used for community factor discovery, layout, stock and performance, it connects with HP OpenView Operations for pass-discipline administration.
"The historic community Node supervisor (by myself) become a extremely reactive environment, although. We stored listening to about outages from our inner shoppers. we might get the symptoms and descriptions after the activities had already came about. we might emerge as looking no longer so respectable, and sometimes we might deserve to herald a bunch of people to support repair the difficulty," Hagan says..
"With OpenView, despite the fact, we have now turn into directly proactive. we will prevent complications, and we're aware about problems that do occur before the clients even learn about them. If a consumer calls, we are able to say, 'A quandary ticket has already been created, and a web page has been sent out. Such-and-such utility will be up in an hour or two.'"
HP has to be a software playerSome critics argue that OpenView can't be all that crucial to HP, considering HP's hardware revenues far outweigh the application side. youngsters, trade analyst Jasmine Noel disputes that conclusion.
Noel aspects to a couple of business trends affecting HP, in addition to different trade providers. "Margins on computing hardware maintain declining; computing-based mostly company functions are now important to commercial enterprise success; and successful start of company functions requires administration of the whole compting stack," she says.
"The computing stack in each massive enterprise continues to be heterogenous," adds Noel, who's main at JNoel buddies. "This combination of trends requires HP to have a heterogenous management solution (in an effort to current) a credible utility story to commercial enterprise valued clientele."
Noel also likes the investments HP is making in "clever" management, for extra effective administration, and in industry partnerships, for more advantageous interoperability with other providers' products.
OpenView's EvolutionEmmett notes that HP first moved into programs administration with network Node supervisor in 1988. "We used what expertise become obtainable on the time, together with SNMP. We then began including further and further capabilities," he provides. Acquisitions helped HP to build up OpenView. In 1997, for instance, HP bought Prolin, the Netherlands-primarily based maker of the IT service manager suite.
At this element, HP's massive OpenView household revolves largely around Operations display screen and performance monitor. each and every monitoring product has brokers working on all important systems, ranging from Linux to MVS.
Operations supervisor is the crucial business console, for an conclusion-to-end view of the business that contains client PCs, the community, applications, and database. efficiency display screen provides tools corresponding to a graphing function and reviews for monitoring and analyzing useful resource utilization.
For superior interoperability, OpenView complies with specifications starting from SNMP and RMON to OMI. "We often sit on necessities committees, in reality," in accordance with Emmett.
HP also offers a set of templates, called wise Plug-Ins (SPIs), for configuring third-birthday party tools. "The sensible Plug-In is aware of the place to find the log files in Oracle, for instance," Emmett illustrates.
The HP Operations supervisor can even be combined with OpenView provider Navigator, carrier information Portal, provider Desk, and cyber web features, as well as with community Node manager, for instance.
carrier Navigator uses guidance captured in the SPIs to let administrators drill right down to find root reasons for talents complications. If a warning flashes as a result of software efficiency is degrading, the administrator can drill down during the database and storage device to discover that a disk is overheating, for instance, in accordance with Emmett.
service Navigator additionally comprises "influence analysis" capabilities for picking out which databases and functions are likely to suffer, and the stage of severity of the impending hit. OpenView uses colour coding to point out six distinct severity states.
administrators can automate response sequence, such as paging an administrator or failing over to a backup server, as an example. An not obligatory add-on called superior protection provides authentication and information encryption.
As Emmett sees it, OpenView has two main units of competitors: "framework providers" (reminiscent of IBM Tivoli and CA) and "aspect device companies." BA Patrol, he says, "falls someplace in between."
Deployment in 88 days"My enterprise granted us one hundred eighty days for OpenView deployment. I installation a a lot greater aggressive agenda of ninety days, but we have been able to wind up in 88 days," Hagan says. Hagan labored on the rollout at Zurich existence with one fulltime consultant, plus one worker. The employee spent 50 percent of his time on the OpenView rollout, and the other half of his time on Unix administration.
"One essential piece turned into to be sure we acquired the requirements for alarms monitors and thresholds from all the linked methods managers. We did not are looking to be paging a person at three am, simply because server skill had reached 90 %," Hagan recalls.
Hagan claims that he is gotten huge cooperation from all across his enterprise. "Our e-commerce team thinks OpenView is dazzling. What that you could do with OpenView is restricted best through your imagination."
Zurich life has already used HP's SPIs to integrate Oracle, Sybase SQL Server, and a number of third-birthday party management equipment. Hagan says the enterprise is now testing SPIs for Lotus Notes and Ciscoworks, for instance.
Zurich did consider other systems management products, corresponding to Tivoli, Unicenter, and Patrol. "Some items, although, do not give information that's as significant, and a few have longer implementation instances. We did not have a tremendous team of workers to roll this out," Hagan points out.
more automation on the manner"home windows, Solaris, and HP-UX. those are the server environments that systems administration items customarily run on, although from time to time you get one or two others, reckoning on the supplier's partnerships," Noel observes..
past that, Noel doesn't want to evaluate OpenView with different systems management products. "each and every one is just too diverse," she keeps.
The analyst is especially impressed, even though, with HP's future plans for simplifying systems and automating carrier stage management with OpenView.
"HP's message it their target market is that corporate IT departments that operate as business partners will be extra a hit, less liable to costcutting measures, and less prone to be outsourced," in line with Noel.
"HP has two overall messages about its options. the first is (that) HP options support corporate IT bring more desirable functions with fewer elements and reduce charges. The proverbial silver bullet HP OpenView offers is service degree administration. HP expands the definition of carrier stage management from the current knowing of monitoring and alerting on SLA violations to one in every of a technique of defining, provisioning, managing, and optimizing the materials providing the carrier," in line with Noel.
"HP's 2d message is (that) their solution set is both complete and imaginative. (The message) is comprehensive in that HP has options for every point of service degree administration and continues to add capabilities. (it's) ingenious in that HP's newest items handle how new technologies trade the management necessities."
HP's three-yr roadmap requires extra improvements to integration, infrastructure, and storage administration; construction of a carrier degree Object mannequin; and start of items "that assist in the diagnostic method," the analyst notes.
On the mixing side, for example, HP is now in the process of consolidating its varied integration APIs into a single toolkit for third celebration carriers.
With the carrier stage Object mannequin, HP is looking to "grab all of the assistance, and put it into a typical format, so it's easier to share counsel as you stream from one step within the manner to the different," in response to Noel.
when it comes to infrastructure coverage, HP is working on web functions requisites and protocols akin to J2EE, WebMethods' OMI initiative, and Microsoft's .net servers.
a few of OpenView's newest items, comparable to OpenView Transaction supervisor, can display screen J2EE and .net functions and purposes. For the longer term, though, HP plans to construct in additional intelligence.
"which you can video display 100 things in J2EE, however which of them are most crucial? presently, you best get that through the use of (OpenView) for a long time. additionally, you could hint the path a transaction took through .internet, however that you may only do this after-the-fact. HP desires to bring this into realtime," she says.
HP now presents SPIs for WebMethods, Microsoft .internet, and SunOne internet services - soap Engine, as an example. at the least 40 SPIs are supplied, all told.
different lately added OpenView products include service Activator, for automating the birth of services offered by way of internet hosting suppliers; and data Protector, a alternative for OpenView Omniback II.
statistics Protector is designed for integrated administration of disk-based mostly and tape-based recuperation across varied OS, applications, and storage architectures. administrators can manage each healing time and recuperation point ambitions.
HP integrates CompaqWith the Compaq acquisition, HP is now working on integrating Compaq's products into its programs administration mix. Compaq insight supervisor will proceed to be used most effective in Wintel environments, on the grounds that its administration capabilities are hardware-oriented, Emmett says.
however, Compaq's TeMIP product for telco administration is now being ported via HP from Tru64 - which was at the start DEC Unix - to HP-UX and Solaris, Emmett provides.
very nearly, editions of OpenView for HP-UX, Solaris and windows present the same capabilities. "however we're also taking abilities of the traits of each and every platform. The home windows edition changed into designed for home windows from the ground up. It makes use of windows drag-and-drop, for example," Emmett says.
OpenView is home windows 2000-certified. On he home windows aspect, the product additionally uses Microsoft technologies that encompass MMC, WMI, CIM, DCOM, visual simple scripting, HTML/XML, HTTP/soap, internet Explorer, and IIS.
"in the meantime, we're also retaining our eyes open for different potential server structures, including Linux," provides HP's Emmett.

HP, as a Microsoft Windows 2000 Global Launch Partner, revealed its aggressive services strategy and a number of new products at the recent Mircosoft Expo. HP is abundantly prepared to support Windows 2000 with the complete family of hardware products and a comprehensive service program.
The three-day Microsoft Windows 2000 Conference and Expo held in San Francisco was attended by several thousand eager IT professionals. Unlike Microsoft’s past major, customer-based product launches, this event was very subdued, presumably to reflect the serious nature of business computing. HP, as a Microsoft Windows 2000 Global Launch Partner, revealed its own aggressive services strategy and a number of new products.
In an approach that is typical of HP, the company is abundantly prepared to support Windows 2000 with the complete family of hardware products and a comprehensive service program. One of the most telling examples of HP’s commitment to Windows 2000 was the recent formation of the Microsoft Services Organization. (See sidebar conversation with HP General Manager David Stubbs.) The new business unit is dedicated to helping customers plan, design, implement and maintain Microsoft technologies across the enterprise to deliver what they hope to be bulletproof computing environments.
The outward relationship between HP and Microsoft exhibited during the event was all grins and thumbs-up. Although there existed some behind-the-scenes concern regarding future product conflicts, Microsoft’s Vice President of Windows Marketing, Deborah Willingham, officially echoed the mutual love by stating, "We are thrilled that HP is presenting such a comprehensive range of hardware, software, services and support for Windows 2000. The depth of HP’s services, which include consulting, migration services, license management and training, will give our mutual customers the crucial services they need."
Jim Allchin, Microsoft Group Vice President for Windows Platforms, underscored these views. "HP is building PC systems that are fully optimized for Windows 2000 … by combining world-class products and services from Microsoft and HP, customers enjoy a smoother migration path and a more consistent, manageable user experience."
For many years, HP has led the pack in cross platform network management tools. With the release of Windows 2000, HP has made a renewed commitment to its flagship OpenView suite. OpenView Microsoft Alliance Manager, John Renshaw, and Product Manager, Pam Peterson, eagerly promoted the new Windows 2000 manageability tools.
The big news is something called Vantage Point for Windows, a collection of technologies that was developed for enterprise Windows 2000 manageability. According to Renshaw, "Vantage Point provides real intelligence instance tracking, and the ability to proactively understand what is being run. Vantage Point and OpenView Express were built from the ground-up to support Windows 2000. This allows significant scalability."
Building from its current enterprise successes, HP OpenView Express is designed for mid-size enterprises running Windows 2000 and other operating systems. It combines HP OpenView ManageX for proactive server control and management, OpenView Network Node Manager for network administration and event notification, and OpenView OmniBack II for backup and retrieval of stored digital data. This suite facilitates quicker problem isolation and resolution by integrating network information. Through the use of event correlation, alarms, reporting and threshold establishment, the enterprise system administrator is afforded tools to manage and troubleshoot.
HP OpenView provides policy-based management to monitor Windows 2000 systems, based on predefined thresholds. Action can be taken when failure or degradation is found in CPU utilization, memory usage, disk utilization or performance reliability. OpenView can also be used to automatically restart Windows 2000 services when thresholds are exceeded.
When asked about its relationship to Windows 2000 Active Directory, Renshaw stated that a considerable amount of effort has gone into providing APIs for future development. At this time, the relationship is rather basic, but plans for further integration are in the works. As to the relationship of HP’s management tools with Microsoft’s System Management Server product, HP was less definitive. "We consider them complementary at this stage, but there may be some functionality overlap in the future … we will have to see things develop."
In a side discussion with the CIO of Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Michael Keithley, we discovered a big fan of OpenView Express. He gave an example of the requirements that CAA has for storing and retrieving the large amounts of streaming digital data associated with the film, television and recording industry. The need to rapidly produce digital content about their clients is an important factor of their success. Keithley states that the "OmniBack feature, in particular, more than exceeded our expectations. Running OpenView Express on Windows 2000 provides both performance and reduced costs." The company currently uses 45 HP 4- and 8-way NetServer LPr, and LX 8000 and 8500 systems. In addition, it has 25 HP NetServers in place to support file, print, fax and e-mail services.
Another important application suite introduced for support on Windows 2000 is HP TopTools. This set of utilities monitors system activities and alerts users of pending component failure or other potential problems.
Enhanced Security Bundle
One of the key value-added components to the Windows 2000 mix offered by HP is its advanced security products. Denis Bournival, HP Program Manager, shared his thoughts on these security initiatives.
The HP ProtectTools 2000 optimizes the security features already available in Windows 2000. "The Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) features of the OS are further enhanced, for example, by the new HP Smart Card readers," states Bournival. "This technology is finding acceptance across industries, with highest demand in financial, government, and business to business Internet settings."
HP views the ProtectTool 2000 as a transaction-enabling technology through the use of Virtual Private Networks. "IPSec performance is also significantly improved," concludes Bournival.
HP takes the concept of their security bundle one step further. One of the most underrated areas of enterprise security relates to power management. If the system fails, costly data could be lost. In response to this issue, HP announced the HP Power Protection Device for Windows 2000. Designed to work directly with the Windows 2000 Professional hibernation mode, this compact device fits into a PC single free expansion shelf. The Power Protection Device is fully automatic, whether the PC is unattended, in sleep mode, in "suspend" mode, or in "Suspend to RAM" mode. All open file and user desktop environment backup is performed in case of power failure, shutting down the PC, cleanly and securely, within five seconds.
HP is extremely aggressive in offering its Windows 2000 services. In a conversation with Ian Bromehead, who manages the Global Microsoft Solutions Services Center in Grenoble, France, he indicated that HP has opened operations around the world to support Windows 2000 proof-of-concept testing, planning and migration. "We want customers to experience Windows 2000 in a real-world environment and then to prototype their enterprise with expert support."
The Windows 2000 Readiness Assessment programs are designed to help clients understand their current IT environment and to contrast these needs against the combined products and services offered by HP and Microsoft. HP consultants work with customers to deliver large and complex implementations in a controlled test environment. The Server and Storage Consolidation Planning program is designed to assist customers to develop and manage an architectural strategy that optimizes Windows 2000 technology.
Not long ago, the words "handheld" and "enterprise" didn't often appear in the same sentence. Handheld computers were personal devices used individually by the occasional executive or employee with specialized functions.
Now, the proliferation of wireless technology has changed the way we work, and more agencies are equipping employees with wireless devices so that they can work on the road and in the field.
This large-scale deployment has created a need for enterprise-level management software. Think of a product such as Computer Associates International Inc.'s Unicenter ServicePlus or Hewlett-Packard Co.'s OpenView, but designed for a fleet of wireless devices instead of clients on a network.
MFormation Technologies Inc. has answered the call with its mFormation Enterprise Manager, a wireless infrastructure management platform. The product manages device deployments from end to end, allowing high levels of control and monitoring.
Information technology managers will be pleased to know that the mFormation Enterprise Manager is completely device- and wireless network-independent: It can manage any mix of devices across any combination of networks anywhere in the world. For example, if your agency's deployment includes Palm Inc. devices for some employees and Research in Motion Ltd.'s (RIM) BlackBerries for others, with some devices operating on a Cingular Wireless Mobitex network and some using Cellular Digital Packet Data, the system can manage all of them simultaneously from one Web-based console.
The level of control is indeed impressive. Thanks to a hidden agent installed on every device, managers can perform a host of actions, including locking the device, sending it a text message and monitoring the loaded applications. Managers can also check network performance with reports in the form of graphs and charts.
With Palm and handheld devices running on certain networks, it's even possible to install or remove applications remotely. The physical location of devices is also easily monitored. A thief could take a device to an out-of-coverage location and secretly dig through its applications, but any activity on the network would be detected.
Adding to its flexibility, the mFormation interface offers role-based access. IT support personnel, for example, can log on with just enough rights to perform their jobs while higher-level access is restricted to managers.
We used the application service provider environment for our testing. MFormation loaned us three RIM BlackBerry devices with working e-mail accounts and device agents preloaded, and they set up an administrative account that we could use to access the Web-based console and manage the devices. The console is accessible from any Web browser.
The graphical user interface won't win any beauty contests, but that hardly matters. After learning just a few basic concepts about the interface's organization and commands, even a novice user can perform most functions without consulting the manual. All functions are clearly labeled and accessible from a few main screens.
To organize the devices in an enterprise, managers can assign them to business-level groups. This way, policies can be set and commands issued by group. All monitoring statistics and reports can also be viewed by group. Likewise, these functions can be carried out for the entire enterprise at once or for individual devices separately.
Command schedules can be preset to carry out certain commands at a specific time or after a specified delay. Again, the flexibility is impressive. Commands can be sent not only by group, but also by network or device type, or according to other parameters, such as to users who have logged on to e-mail in the past two days. An IT manager might, for example, send a message to staffers who are using a certain application to let them know a new version is available.
As with any product that relies on a wireless network, occasionally a network glitch does occur. In a few instances, we had problems sending commands to BlackBerry devices. In one case, a command sent to a device inexplicably remained pending until the next day, when it was manually deleted via the mFormation console. A subsequent attempt went through without a hitch.
In another test, the mFormation server worked properly, but Cingular lost a data packet, which apparently happens on occasion.
The mFormation Enterprise Manager comes with several important security features.
For starters, the Get Location command enables managers to immediately retrieve location information for a device. The information returned includes the street address and identification number of the base station being used, as well as current signal strength and battery level.
The Lock command prevents all access to a device, rendering it unusable. An Unlock command reverses this action. If a device is lost or stolen, its status can quickly be changed to Lost with one mouse click. This also locks the device, but in the interest of securing it as quickly as possible, it bypasses the initialization process that takes place when a Lock command is issued. With one more click, the device status can be changed to Found and its functionality restored.
Managers also have real-time password management control. They can reset a device's password remotely as well as monitor password changes. This could be accompanied by a message to the user containing instructions.
The most drastic security measure is the Zap command, which deletes all the application databases on a device and locks it. This command is not reversible. However, the agent remains on the device so that if it is powered on in an area with network coverage, mFormation can still track and monitor it.
The company has also implemented tight agent/server communication security. First, each device agent is installed with a burnt-in server address such as a Mobitex Access Number or Short Message Service Center gateway address that is used to authenticate the server. The device will reject commands from any other source. The agent can also store a long-term public key for server authentication.
Last year's enterprise strategy, Adaptive Infrastructure, never left the nest - lest it be picked off by IBM's upstaging better-thought-out $10 billion On Demand strategy - so the other day HP - to celebrate the first birthday of its merger with Compaq - took another shot at it and trotted out the Adaptive Enterprise, an exercise distinguished by the longest string of buzzwords ever assembled in one place by a single computer company, a feat unto itself given the competition.
The exercise was also heavy on inflated, if not impossible, promises, hyperbole and borrowing from Sun and IBM, not to mention an insistence that everything necessary to create what HP calls the "agile" enterprise is available now, which it isn't. Far from it, although it claims it used them all in integrating Compaq into the parent company.
HP, which is apparently going to spend $80 million on an ad campaign telling customers to "demand more," is trying to use Adaptive Enterprise to shift itself from being a gears factory into the business process space. Reminiscent of Sun and IBM, it's about offering computing like a utility; and like IBM, HP is directing its message at the boardroom, not the geeks in the data center.
The centerpiece of the scheme is a thing called the Darwin Reference Architecture, a standards-based framework consisting of every standard ever invented that's supposed to increase business and IT integration - so it adapts more quickly and easily to changing needs - and at the same time lowers IT acquisition and operating costs.
Said standards include web services, rich media, UDDI, grids, XML, SOAP, WSDL, VoIP, BPEL, IPF, Linux, Windows, iSCSI. Well, you get the picture.
The principles behind Darwin and the Adaptive Enterprise as a whole are supposed to be simplification, standardization, modularity and integration. Mom, apple pie, and the American flag.
HP has created new services and software updates to its OpenView management software that fit in this Darwinian architecture, which involves tying together best-of-breed third-party technologies - to wit from Microsoft, PeopleSoft, BEA, Oracle, Siebel, SAP, Cisco, and Red Hat - into an efficient platform and support the utility theme. HP's contribution is the design principles.
OpenView, for instance, now has self-healing properties for real-time troubleshooting and automatic fault detection and there's a Virtual Server Environment to monitor and balance HP's Unix boxes against a set of business priorities.
HP has also developed a handy $25,000 two-week Agility Assessment Service that's supposed to measure how quickly companies can adapt their IT infrastructures to cope with changes in business processes. Of course, there may be those skeptics who doubt that agility can be measured, only admired.
Meanwhile, HP got a birthday present from Proctor & Gamble: $3 billion 10-year global contract to manage P&G's IT infrastructure, data center operations, desktop and end user support, networks, applications development and maintenance, the largest managed services agreement HP Services ever got.
