Breaking announcements in printable substances, hardware, and the newest conclusion-use applications at the moment are normal at main 3D printing conferences. focusing on the newest materials designed for additive manufacturing, normal explanations for the way each changed into conceived seemingly include the terms topology optimization, lattice design, and generative design.
besides the fact that children these ideas are well based in an academic sense, their industrial implementation and technical definitions have become the center of attention of huge establishments and startups alike. pushed via stronger half manufacturing freedom and a necessity for productive technology of optimized designs, the design utility world is rising to the problem with utility innovations throughout CAD, CAM, and CAE purposes.
nTopology, Frustum, and ParaMatters are three venture-backed startups that are pushing to redefine how ingredients are designed optimally and effectively for any manufacturing formula.
Interviewing these agencies’ founders offers definitions for generative design, explains how topology and lattice algorithms relate to the concept, and illustrates each founder’s imaginative and prescient for tomorrow’s design and optimization procedure. moreover, a technology trends overview offers context for where these startups and their technologies fit into the broader design application landscape.nTopology designed 3D prints. photo by using Michael Petch.
The definition of generative design
Defining generative design starts with a discuss with to Wikipedia, which offers an Autodesk-stated definition as “a kind discovering method that may mimic nature’s evolutionary strategy to design. it may possibly birth with design dreams after which discover innumerable possible diversifications of an answer to find the gold standard option”.
These innumerable viable permutations can be found to the human user for extra concept generation or screening. besides the fact that children helpful when increasing on the spectrum of design ideas or possible solutions, the engineering value associated with generative design requires more than thought technology. in response to Jesse Coors-Blankenship, CEO and founder of Frustum, “Generative design requires a holistic way of working with indeterminate geometry it is produced for the designer by algorithms somewhat then through the dressmaker manually,”
“The user ought to be able to work this indeterminacy with engineering precision with the intention to be advantageous with generative design.”
In identical style, Michael Bogomolny, Founder and CTO of ParaMatters, says, “I see generative design as an self sufficient vehicle. The automobile is aware of the guidelines of the highway and where I need to go,”
“I envision generative design to be a one click on answer to get a design in a position for printing while preserving all distinct engineering design constraints.”
according to the engineering focus, Bradley Rothenberg, CEO and founder of nTopology, describes generative design as “able to creation, so in that feel the act of engineering is itself “generative” — What pursuits me now is tying together multiple algorithms into a broader computational workflow.”
The startup founders all described generative design with a basic engineering focus, and similarly indicate that it should make the most of all constraints, algorithms, and geometries in presenting a solution. Upon extra elaboration, a massive point of contrast arose between each founder’s definition. particularly, the diploma of involvement the consumer may still have within the generative part of the design process, spanning essentially finished computational autonomy for ParaMatters to algorithm modification and sequence variation for nTopology.
at the same time, generative design in its best incarnation may be defined as:
“an automated and iterative workflow that optimizes statistics inputs from all obtainable quantified engineering and financial constraints to create a computationally validated and manufacturing-competent part or product design.”
As developers try to create best generative design equipment, here three products mirror one of the crucial similarities and changes latest in each founder’s interesting vision for this know-how.each and every startup supplies generative design performance the usage of topology optimization and feature era.
point pro, Generate web and CogniCAD
nTopology’s point seasoned is a platform laptop utility that makes it possible for skilled clients to deploy algorithmic strategies and limits inside a given workflow for much less experienced users to function inside. this adaptability offers clients brought levels of freedom to remedy a given optimization issue with different optimization modules together with lattice era, mechanical performance, and some manufacturing constraints.
Frustum’s Generate web is a cloud-primarily based utility that designs and optimizes components for quite a number manufacturing techniques with developed-in constraints. users benefit from a streamlined usual workflow that optimizes between weight rate reductions by way of lattice buildings and topology optimization, and mechanical efficiency.
ParaMatters’ CogniCAD is additionally a cloud-based utility that designs and optimizes components the use of mechanical efficiency-driven function era in accordance with stress and deformation that informs fatigue issues. The application may additionally additionally use advanced topology optimization, vibrational features, meta-substances (pre-programmed lattices), and a multimaterial option in beta to supply an best outcomes. CogniCAD has an easy workflow that caters in opposition t additively manufactured ingredients.Topology optimization of a 3D printed bone implant via CogniCAD. photograph by the use of Paramatters
The typical topics throughout aspect seasoned, Generate, and CogniCAD generative design utility courses are the use of topology optimization, and using volumetric object representation to generate surfaces as adverse to the usual mesh representations used in widespread CAD software.
Generate and CogniCAD are extra an identical in their positioning as they focus on able-to-manufacture half designs. where element pro aims skilled clients looking to personalize their generative design options via a broader framework, Generate web goals to simplify generative design for a range of manufacturing tactics with weight and mechanical performance tradeoffs. Paramatters also aims to simplify generative design extra above all for additive manufacturing with a extensive optimization function set protecting stress, deformation and vibration considerations, metamaterials, and mesostructures similar to those present in human bone.
these days’s generative design utility items healthy functionally in between ordinary CAD utility and the CAM application that prepares a design file to be manufactured. despite the fact there are CAD and CAM facets present in generative design software these days, the core price proposition is still at the intersection of design and simulation.
characteristic tendencies such as the addition of producing constraints and cloud architectures that assist high efficiency computing are already turning generative design application into an automatic and up to date design option. Future iterations may have manufacturing constraints and specifications further built-in into the software, along with system selected materials statistics to greater optimize throughout engineering and financial considerations.steel 3D printed wrench demonstrating the mix between lattices and topology optimization. image by way of Frustum
The startups discussed listed below are amongst many bigger opponents innovating in CAD, CAM, and CAE software, although none of those larger gamers except for Autodesk present an built-in workflow that makes it possible for designers to take potential of the newest manufacturing approaches purchasable to them.
Algorithmic half design will command an expanding element of the design software market because of decreasing costs for cloud computation and storage combining with multiplied design freedom, and the forthcoming creation of producing statistics sets purchasable to desktop gaining knowledge of. predict big trends from all organizations as they try to capture the velocity and effectivity of generative design for existing users.
searching forward, more and more designers should be digital natives that expect seamless cloud functionality, edition control, computational potential, and entry to principal statistics. The convergence of these traits will flip today’s generative design software from a device into the most efficient decision-making engine for manufacturing the following day’s cars, scientific implants, and plane.

“business intelligence has always been there, however there isn't plenty focus on unstructured statistics. what is sitting to your e-mails, what is sitting in the photographs, to your files and web pages. there is a wealth of suggestions that organizations can look into how they could extract it, analyze it and make some enterprise choices,” spoke of Mohan Krishnan, vice president and popular supervisor, technology consulting and technology services of HP Asia Pacific and Japan.
The announcement became made throughout the primary HP World Tour held in Beijing in June, which changed into attended with the aid of IT experts and journalists from Asia Pacific and Japan.
large facts refers to a large extent of each structured and unstructured suggestions. Krishnan says that once a consumer calls the financial institution for a transaction, the advice is structured however when the client tweets a grievance concerning the service, it is unstructured.
“The total issue about huge records is what I name predictive analysis. That means you expect what will turn up in the future. Do you need to make a bet or do you are looking to analyze the records that you've? So many people have access to facebook and there's a company chance in what they are saying,” Krishnan stated.
“If a bank knows what their valued clientele are buying, they would be in a position to create new capabilities and new choices. same goes with telcos and manufacturing. by examining counsel, it may assist them deliver new streams of profits and new alternatives for enterprise,” he observed.
in the Philippines, the opportunity for large statistics lies in the business technique outsourcing and banking industries, Krishnan mentioned.

Following the world premiere of the first-ever 2019 BMW i8 Roadster at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2017, sales will commence in spring 2018. Simultaneously, the new 2019 BMW i8 Coupe will also be available at certified BMW centers with both models offering LifeDrive vehicle architecture designed for BMW i cars. Price to be announced closer to market launch.
Vehicle concept and driving experience. The BMW i8 has performed the role of sports car of the future with extraordinary success since 2014. The progressively designed 2+2-seater doubles up as an eye-catching object of desire and a technological pioneer. Indeed, the BMW i8 has been the world’s best-selling hybrid sports car since it first hit the roads in 2014 and has collected an array of awards in recognition of its visionary design and trailblazing vehicle concept. The BMW i8’s plug-in hybrid drive system has won the International Engine of the Year Award three years in succession (2015 – 2017) and paved the way for the constantly expanding number of plug-in hybrid models from the BMW and MINI brands.
The aluminum Drive module combines the powertrain, high-voltage battery, suspension, crash system and structural functions, while the Life module takes the form of a passenger cell made out of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). The first-ever BMW i8 Roadster also benefits from a light-weight construction, complete with low center of gravity and even weight distribution. The aerodynamically optimized exterior – with model-specific gullwing doors and a soft-top roof that also displays great visual lightness – is a fine exponent of the signature BMW i design language. The result is a two-seater boasting a distinctive and elegantly silhouette, and delivering an immediate promise of instantaneous power ready to be unleashed.
The BMW i8 Roadster: two-seater with electrically operated soft-top roof and additional on-board storage space. Passengers inside the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster can either enjoy the open sky or a high-quality, all-season fabric soft-top with additional soundproofing. The electrically operated convertible top, opens and closes in less than 16 seconds and while the vehicle is in motion at up to 31 mph.
The BMW i8 Roadster is alone among its rivals in offering owners a fabric soft-top which stows away into a perpendicular position in the rear when opened and therefore takes up very little space. The three segments of the roof fold vertically in a ‘Z’. Additional storage space between the roof box and the seats for the driver and front passenger is around 3.5 ft3 (preliminary figure). In combination with the storage area in the rear, which can accommodate 4.7 ft3 cargo, the rear compartment helps to ensure the open-top version of the plug-in hybrid sports car is also as well equipped as possible for everyday use.
Opening the roof raises the rear window automatically by around 1.9 inches into a comfort position. By raising the rear window, the air flow is guided towards the rear, reducing wind turbulence optimizing the passenger’s experience. The driver can adjust the height of the rear window at the touch of a button to control the impact of the inflowing air as desired.
Intelligent lightweight design and innovative production technology also play a key role in the construction of the soft-top. For example, aluminum elements connecting the roof mechanism with the body of the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster are produced in a new 3D printing process. This manufacturing method for aluminum components breaks new ground in the automotive industry and allows the topologically optimized bracings to be produced in a geometric form, which would not be possible using conventional casting techniques and ensures an optimal balance between component rigidity and weight.
Optimized BMW eDrive technology: more power, increased range; electric driving experience raised another notch. Rigorously developed BMW eDrive technology powers both the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster and new BMW i8 Coupe. The number of driving situations where the electric motor is solely responsible for powering the car has been significantly increased. By contrast, the combustion engine is only brought into play when accelerating hard, and is switched off again far more frequently with a measured driving style. The optimized operating strategy of the intelligent energy management highlights the future-focused character of the new BMW i8 Coupe and ensures that drivers of the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster can enjoy silent open-top driving with zero local emissions.
Underpinning this new level of locally emission-free electric mobility is the updated version of the lithium-ion battery developed for the BMW i8. The high-voltage unit is located centrally in the car’s underbody and its cell capacity is up from 20 to 34 Ah and gross energy capacity from 7.1 to 11.6 kilowatt hours (kWh, net energy capacity: 9.4 kWh). Plus, the cell configuration allows a 12 hp increase in peak output to 141 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, lacing quick sprints on pure-electric power with an even sharper streak of dynamism.
The electric range of the i8 has also been increased. The first-ever BMW i8 Roadster and BMW i8 Coupe can cover up to 18 miles (preliminary) in purely electric driving. And that broadens the reach of all-electric mobility well beyond the city limits.
Design. The BMW i8 is the world’s first sports car to be developed from the outset primarily under the banner of sustainability. Groundbreaking lightweight design, systematic improvement of aerodynamics and advanced plug‑in hybrid technology. The framework for the concept’s implementation was provided by the brand new LifeDrive vehicle architecture for BMW i models, whose horizontally split structure comprising an aluminum chassis and a CFRP passenger cell offers an exceptional degree of design freedom. The visionary styling of the BMW i8 Coupe therefore succeeds in expressing not just the car’s dynamic performance credentials, but also its outstanding efficiency. A string of prestigious accolades, including the iF Design Award and the Red Dot Award, testify to the design’s quality and allure. And the BMW i8 Roadster translates the unmistakable BMW i design language to another vehicle concept, fusing the dynamic proportions of the i8 with signature roadster features to give it a character all of its own.
Their proportions, lines and surface design mark out the BMW i8 Coupe and the BMW i8 Roadster as belonging to a new breed of sports car. A flat hood, visible aerodynamics measures, short overhangs, a long wheelbase, large track widths and an elongated roofline create an aura of dynamism, lightness and efficiency. On an individual level, meanwhile, the BMW i8 Coupe stands out as an extremely sporty 2+2-seater, while the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster exudes the freedom of open-top motoring for two.
The BMW i8 Roadster: emotion-stirring design promises an intense driving experience and unadulterated freedom. The design of the BMW i8 Roadster is awash with individual highlights that radiate elegance. The soft-top roof has a visual lightness to go with its low physical weight and serves as a defining element of the silhouette in reinforcing the road-hugging impression made by the car’s low center of gravity. The body’s dynamic wedge shape can also be best appreciated when viewing the two-seater in profile.
When opened, the BMW i8 Roadster’s broad roof retracts fully into the rear end, lending greater emphasis still to the car’s low-slung silhouette. The CFRP passenger cell’s robust structure means the soft-top could be designed with generous width and so create an amply sized window to the sky. The rear window extends into a comfort position as the roof folds away and can serve as a draught stop in any setting.
The B-pillars of the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster are emblazoned with beautifully made model-specific badges bearing the inscription “Roadster”. A similar logo can be found on the tail of the sporty two-seater.
New exterior paint finishes, exclusive light-alloy wheels. The design cues common to both the new BMW i8 Coupe and first-ever BMW i8 Roadster include the gullwing doors that open forwards and upwards as well as optimized aerodynamics. The low hood, BMW kidney grille, air flap control system, Air Curtains in the front apron, flat underbody, contoured side skirts, “stream flow” lines of the car’s flanks, and air ducts between the rear lights and roof frame allow the air to be guided effectively. The flow of cooling air at the front of each model has now been re-routed. Instead of rushing out through the outlet in the hood, the air escapes at the sides of the car near the wheel arches and into the underbody. This ensures a pleasant cabin temperature is maintained at all times, especially when travelling in the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster with the roof down.
E-Copper metallic and Donington Grey metallic have been added to the choice of exterior paint finishes available for the new BMW i8 Coupe and first-ever BMW i8 Roadster. Both are combined with accents in Frozen Grey metallic.
The first-ever BMW i8 Roadster is equipped as standard with exclusive 20-inch BMW i light-alloy wheels in Radial-spoke style bicolor design with mixed-size tires (Jet Black design optional). Intelligent lightweight design also make an impact here, with each wheel weighing around 2.2 pounds less than the lightest wheels previously available for the BMW i8. In addition to the standard 20-inch light-alloy wheels, customers can choose from another four light-alloy wheel variants with the same dimensions.
The BMW i8 Coupe also includes a model-specific design feature indicating its identity: “Coupe” badging on its B-pillars.
Innovative interior design in a range of new looks. The progressive style of the BMW i8 Coupe and first-ever BMW i8 Roadster also shines through clearly in their interior design. Standard specification for both models includes a sports steering wheel and multifunctional instrument display, plus Giga interior trim comprising full-leather upholstery in Ivory White for the Coupe and Ivory White/Black for the Roadster. Giga interior trim can alternatively be specified in dark Amido for both models and there is also the option of Halo interior trim featuring cloth/leather upholstery in a Carum/Dalbergia color scheme.
New to the portfolio for the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster and new BMW i8 Coupe is Tera World Copper interior trim, a high-end option featuring cloth/leather upholstery in an Amido/E-Copper color scheme.
Powertrain, chassis and body. With its intoxicating blend of advanced BMW eDrive technology, BMW TwinPower Turbo technology internal combustion engine, sophisticated chassis technology, hybrid-specific all-wheel drive and rigorously applied lightweight design measures, the BMW i8 has come to epitomize the future of the Ultimate Driving Machine. Since its market debut in 2014, it has established itself as the world’s highest-selling plug‑in hybrid sports car. It succeeds in melding sports car performance qualities with the sort of fuel economy and emissions usually associated with compact models. The LifeDrive architecture, meanwhile, ensures a perfect distribution of weight.
The new BMW i8 Coupe and first-ever BMW i8 Roadster are powered by a drive duo in the form of a hybrid synchronous electric motor and BMW TwinPower Turbo technology 1,499 cc 3-cylinder gasoline engine (228 hp and 236 lb-ft). The engine’s power is channeled to the rear wheels through a 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, while the electric motor propels the front wheels via a two-speed automatic gearbox. The end result is a hybrid-specific all-wheel-drive system that glues the car to the road.
A refined high-voltage battery and an electric motor with more power. The constant process of development has enhanced the performance capabilities offered by BMW’s eDrive technology. The energy capacity of the latest version of the model-specific lithium-ion battery is far greater, battery cell capacity having increased from 20 to 34 ampere hours (Ah) and gross energy capacity from 7.1 to 11.6 kilowatt hours (kWh, net energy capacity: 9.4 kWh). This advance is rooted primarily in advances made to the battery cell technology, which in turn stem from the BMW Group’s ever-increasing expertise in the field of electrical energy storage.
These extra energy reserves have made it possible to raise the electric motor’s peak output by 12 hp to 141 hp. In typical electric motor fashion, it generates its maximum torque of 184 lb-ft from standstill, which means it is ideally equipped to deliver razor-sharp responses to the slightest movement of the accelerator. The electric motor developed by the BMW Group also stands out with its consistent power delivery up to very high revs.
The battery cells’ higher capacity means that the proportion of all-electric driving can be increased substantially, even in hybrid mode. With the default driving mode engaged, both the new BMW i8 Coupe and first-ever BMW i8 Roadster are capable of pulling away and reaching speeds of up to 65 mph purely on the electric motor’s power, making it possible to drive with zero local emissions. And if the eDrive button is pressed, the all-electric threshold of both models is increased to 75 mph.
The new high-voltage battery benefits the electric range of the two plug-in hybrid sports cars too. The first-ever BMW i8 Roadster and BMW i8 Coupe can cover up to 18 miles in purely electric driving, almost 30 percent more than before (preliminary figures).
Three-cylinder gasoline engine with improved sound and lower emissions. The i8’s combustion engine has also undergone further optimization to ready it for the new Coupe and Roadster. The turbocharged three-cylinder unit featuring direct injection and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing extracts a maximum output of 228 hp from its displacement of just 1.5 liters, plus peak torque of 236 lb-ft. It is pleasantly refined and generates a distinctive soundtrack that now has an even sportier note when its power reserves are called upon.
The system output produced by the electric motor and gasoline engine acting in unison has increased to 369 hp in the new BMW i8 Coupe and first-ever BMW i8 Roadster. The new BMW i8 Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds (preliminary), while the first ever BMW i8 Roadster accelerates in 4.4 seconds (preliminary). Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
Combined fuel economy in everyday driving, both models return fuel economy and emissions figures that undercut those for conventionally powered sports cars with similar outputs by around 50 per cent, yielding approximately 70 MPGe (preliminary figures).
Maximized driving pleasure with intelligent energy management and hybrid-specific all-wheel drive. In hybrid mode, the electric motor provides a power boost to assist the engine when vigorous acceleration is required. The electric motor is also able to recuperate energy and feed it to the high-voltage battery on the overrun and under braking. The gasoline engine’s high-voltage starter-generator can similarly generate additional reserves of electricity, thereby ensuring that sufficient energy is on tap at all times for the electric drive system in the new BMW i8 Coupe and first-ever BMW i8 Roadster.
This blend of dynamism and efficiency is further honed by the intelligent energy management’s proactive function. When the navigation system’s route guidance function is activated, the energy management ensures the electric motor is employed as extensively and as wisely as possible from an efficiency point of view. The system analyses the route in full and prompts the powertrain management to run on purely electric power, particularly over low-speed sections of the journey.
BMW i8 Roadster with model-specific chassis and body features. The high-end chassis technology in the new BMW i8 Coupe and first-ever BMW i8 Roadster is based on a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle, whose aluminum components have been engineered for optimum weight and rigidity using specific design techniques and production processes. Also standard on both models is Dynamic Damper Control. The bespoke tuning of the suspension and damping systems, the specially configured steering characteristics, a firmer roll stabilization set-up and precise tweaks of the DSC parameters together ensure the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster boasts all of the plug-in hybrid sports car’s hallmark handling and performance qualities.
The approach of making systematic use of lightweight design measures has been meticulously adapted to the specific requirements of the Roadster model. The open-top two-seater comes with newly designed frameless gullwing doors made from CFRP with an aluminum outer shell, while the windscreen frame is made entirely from CFRP. This ultra-strong high-tech material is ideally equipped to provide exceptional rigidity, maximizing the car’s occupant protection in case of a roll-over situation. CFRP is also used to manufacture the side skirts with their extra-large cross-section. The skirts are a contributory factor in the body’s stiffness, as are the additional panels in the rear suspension and the specially designed struts for the front and rear axle. Thanks to the high-strength CFRP body, the chassis and body elements specific to the BMW i8 Roadster result in an extremely small weight gain when compared to other open-top models. The unladen weight of the new BMW i8 Roadster stands at 3,513 pounds, just 132 pounds more in approximate terms than that of the new BMW i8 Coupe (preliminary figures).
Controls, equipment, BMW Connected, ConnectedDrive and 360° ELECTRIC. Both the display and control concept and the equipment of the new BMW i8 Coupe and first-ever BMW i8 Roadster serve to enhance their exhilarating sports car feel and the intense hybrid driving experience. As well as its multifunction buttons, the leather sports steering wheel also comes with shift paddles for changing gear manually, while the standard heated seats for the driver and front passenger are electrically adjustable.
Driving Dynamics Control switch and eDrive button provide five driving modes. Drivers will find an eDrive button in the center console alongside the Driving Experience Control switch to allow them to adapt not just the vehicle’s set-up but also the drive system’s operating strategy. This provides a total of five driving modes to choose from: hybrid drive with COMFORT, SPORT or ECO PRO settings and all-electric driving in COMFORT or ECO PRO mode. If the eDrive button is pressed in either COMFORT mode – which strikes an even balance between sporty and efficient characteristics – or ECO PRO mode (designed for particularly fuel-efficient driving), power is provided by the electric motor alone up to a speed of 75 mph. The combustion engine will only cut in automatically if the battery’s energy reserves are nearly fully depleted or the driver summons full power via kickdown.
It is in SPORT mode that the intelligently controlled interaction between electric motor and combustion engine can be experienced at its most intense. Both power units deliver extra-sharp performance, accelerator response is faster and the power boost from the electric motor is maximized. And to keep the battery topped up, SPORT mode also activates maximum energy recuperation on the overrun and under braking. The intelligent energy management’s mode of operation can be visualized by calling up the energy flow graphic in the Control Display via the iDrive menu.
The instrument cluster takes the form of a fully digital multifunctional instrument display, which shows the car’s speed and driving status information in a format and color scheme selected to suit the driving mode engaged. Traditional, orange-colored circular dials appear in SPORT mode, in COMFORT mode, a blue “power meter” display keeps the driver up to speed on what the electric motor is up to, and ECO PRO mode supplements this with an efficiency gauge.
Navigation system Professional and Driving Assistant as standard. The Navigation system Professional, also included as standard, is controlled using the latest iDrive 6.0 operating system, comprising both a Touch Controller on the center console and an 8.8-inch freestanding touch screen Control Display. The main menu is now presented on the screen in the form of horizontally arranged tiles with a live mode. The standard audio system features a 12 speaker 360 W Harman Kardon HiFi system with HD tuner for digital radio reception.
When it comes to driver assistance systems, the BMW i8 Coupe and BMW i8 Roadster are both equipped as standard with a model-specific BMW Head-Up Display. When the driver is shifting gears manually in SPORT mode, this switches to a sport display that adds an rpm readout, gear indicator and Optimum Shift Indicator. Also included as standard are a cruise control system with braking function as well as the Driving Assistant Package including Surround View. This system comprises Frontal Collision warning with City Collision Mitigation Daytime Pedestrian Protection Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear, Automatic Highbeams, Speed Limit Info and Cross Traffic Alert and Side and Top View Cameras.

Home -> PDA Phone and Smartphone Reviews -> Treo 750
Editor's rating (1-5): Discuss this product
Reviewed January 17, 2007 by Lisa Gade, Editor in Chief
As you're likely well aware, Palm Treo smartphones come in two flavors: Palm OS and Window Mobile. The Treo 750 is the third (fourth if you count the European Vodafone release of the Treo 750v separately) Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition device Palm has launched in a year. Palm's Treo line, both Palm and Window Mobile, have been evolutionary rather than revolutionary; a fact underscored by the similarly timed announcement of the very revolutionary Apple iPhone by Apple at Macworld and Cingular at CES in early January 2007. That said, the Treo 750 packs more change and improvement than meets the eye. Having used and reviewed the first Windows Mobile Treo, the 700w, released a year ago by Verizon at CES 2006, then the somewhat improved Sprint version (the Treo 700wx) which added more RAM, the 750 definitely is the most refined and powerful Windows Mobile Treo to date.
Cingular offers the Treo 750 in the US, at a new contract price of $399, making it a tad more expensive than the power-user's Cingular 8525. In Palm's favor are superb one-handed usability, an ever-ready keyboard with no moving parts and many tweaks that make the phone easier to use. In the 8525's favor we have WiFi, a roomier keyboard and a higher resolution display (by 80 pixels). The Treo 750 is a GSM quad band world phone that will work anywhere GSM service is available. It has UMTS 3G on the US and European bands (Palm will release an upgrade in Q1 2007 to up UMTS to HSDPA). Top that off with a miniSD card slot (compatible with memory cards and SD WiFi cards), a 1.3MP camera and Bluetooth 1.2 and you've got the Treo 750.
Can the full-figured Treo compete against the likes of the Samsung BlackJack and T-Mobile Dash MS Smartphones? And can it compete with the more powerful Cingular 8525? We think it can, handily. The Treo, like the 8525 is a Pocket PC with a touch screen, and those who value the added capabilities of that OS will find the Treo more suited than an MS Smartphone which lacks a touch screen and the mobile MS Office suite (MS Smartphones are also somewhat more difficult to customize since they're more locked-down). Though the Cingular 8525 has WiFi, a higher resolution display and some hardware buttons that make one-handed operation somewhat possible; the Treo is smaller, has an ever-ready keyboard and Palm's myriad software customizations that make it the easiest Windows Mobile Pocket PC phone to use. Those of you considering the HP iPAQ hw6945 know who you are: you want an integrated GPS. The iPAQ also adds WiFi to the mix but loses 3G and is larger than the Treo. They both share a 240 x 240 display and fixed keyboard.
Design and Ergonomics
The Treo 750, like the Palm OS Treo 680 recently released by Cingular and Palm, is most recognizably a Treo but it sports a casing re-design that makes it look and feel smaller (more so than it is), weighs 1 ounce less than the Treo 650 and most importantly removes the large stubby antenna found on the Treo 650, Treo 700w and 700wx. Palm tells us that the Treo 750v ("v" stands for Vodafone) was designed to suit Europeans' higher esthetic, and now we in the US can enjoy a bit of Palm's version of high style.
Like all Treos, the 750 feels wonderful in hand, with curves and mass that make you think Palm took a mold of an average sized hand and used that as a starting point for the Treo's casing. Though not miraculously thin like the 0.46" Samsung BlackJack (technology isn't up to fitting the full Pocket PC edition hardware into wafer-thin phones), the 0.8" Treo actually feels more pleasant in hand with no thin, rectilinear edges poking at finger and palm nerves. Clearly though, your pocket will favor the thinner BlackJack, even if your hand does not. The Treo looks and feels solid and well made.
The keyboard is largely unchanged from the Treo 700 line with similar key size, key travel and tactile feedback. The backlit keys measure 9mm wide x 10mm tall and are predominantly black with the number keys in silver for easy dialing. The numbers share keys with letters, so you'll need to hit the Fn key to enter numbers, but the Fn key is sticky (just press it once, you need not hold it down while pressing the desired number key) and with a double-tap of the Fn key you can turn num lock on (the same is true of the shift key). Though the keyboard isn't as roomy as the Cingular 8525's and not up to the venerable BlackBerry 8700's, it is quite usable. The Samsung BlackJack's keys are more widely spaced which gives you more room to type but requires more thumb movement (a matter of personal preference). We had no issues with the keyboard layout other than the colon (:) which has no place on the keyboard. Instead you'll need to press the Alt key, then select it as the first item in a pop-up list of characters and symbols.
The Treo's soft-touch finish (something along the lines of the BlackJack and T-Mobile Dash anti-slip coating) helps keep the Treo in hand. Given how easy it is to let a slick and weighty Treo 700 slip from the hand, we're thrilled with the new surface texture. The Treo is navy blue with a silver display bezel and brushed-metal looking side grips (the Treo is actually made of plastic). With a bit of industrial legedemain, Palm managed to hide the single LED (there is no window in the silver bezel). You won't know it's there until it lights to indicate charging status. Those who despise flashing LEDs indicating phone service and Bluetooth status will be happy to know that the Treo flashes for neither. However, it also doesn't flash to indicate alarms and appointment reminders that have gone off, so you'll need to turn the Treo on and look at the screen to see if you've missed any alarms. Those who hate toothpick-thin, telescoping styli will love the Treo's ample one-piece stylus.
The Treo has Windows Start Menu and OK buttons surrounding the d-pad to improve one-handed operation, but no jog wheel. The call send and end buttons are in standard locations and the device has the usual Windows Mobile softkeys just below the display. On the left side you'll find volume up and down keys along with a user-assignable button that's assigned to the camera by default. A large IR window and the door covering the miniSD slot are on the PDA's right side and the sync and charge ports are on the bottom edge. The ringer on/off slider and the stylus are located up top. The camera lens, self portrait mirror and speakerphone are on the back and the battery lives under a door on the rear. The SIM slot is located under the battery and the soft reset hole in under the miniSD cover. If you must soft reset the Treo, you'll need to remove and re-insert the battery.
Palm's Customization of Windows Mobile
As with prior Windows Mobile Treo Pocket PC phones, Palm has customized the OS in many ways to greatly improve usability. These include Today Screen plugins for Google search, speed dialing (list style and picture-based), a field where you can type the name or number of the person you wish to call (even if you hide the field, this still works when the phone is in the Today Screen) and the right softkey has shortcuts to Contacts, the dial pad, call log, Wireless Manager and settings for the phone, Today Screen and speed dial. You can press Fn and the OK button to lock the phone's buttons and screen, press and hold the OK button to go to the Task Manager and press the Alt key pretty much anywhere to bring up a list of common characters and symbols, and tap on the battery icon at the top of the Today Screen to see the remaining charge percentage. Speed dial allows you to assign any contact to a letter on the keyboard, so you'll press and hold the "d" key to call Doug (or whatever key you choose to assign to Doug). Palm includes MS Voice Command 1.5 with customizations to support Bluetooth headsets .
Phone Features, Data and Reception
The Treo 750 is a world traveler with a GSM radio that will work anywhere in the world GSM service is available. The quad band GSM radio works on the 850/900/1800/1900MHz bands and handles GSM, GPRS and EDGE. The Treo's 3G radio works on the US and European bands (850/1900/2100MHz) and supports UMTS for data rather than the faster HSDPA standard. UMTS tops out at 384k, though you may see faster results when using Cingular's proxy (hardcoded into the registry for IE) in strong service areas such as ours. Palm states that they'll release an upgrade in Q1 2007 that will move the Treo 750 to HSDPA which means speeds from 600-1,000k in strong Cingular 3G coverage areas with a theoretical max of 1.8 Mbps (which you'll never get on a PDA). Until then, two utilities developed for non-HSDPA enabled HTC Hermes devices (not all had HSDPA enabled because they were sold into UMTS-only countries) work to enable HSDPA on the Treo 750. We installed them and are seeing an average of 950k on DSL Reports mobile speed test. For those who don't wish to install these two small programs (SetHSPDA v2 and fit4cat Hermes), UMTS speeds hovering around 400k are pretty pleasant, being 3 to 4 times faster than EDGE and similar to Verizon and Sprint's EVDO speeds on smartphones in our area.
For Internet-related tasks, the Treo 750 has mobile versions of IE and Outlook. Outlook supports multiple email accounts, POP and IMAP protocols, various kinds of authentication and MS Direct Push email thanks to AKU 3.2 (MS Exchange Server 2003 SP2 required). It also ships with a link to get Good Mobile Messaging and you can install 3rd party Windows Mobile compatible browsers such as Opera. You won't be able to install the free Java-based Opera mini unless you download and install a Java VM since the Treo ships with none. We installed a Java VM and were off and running with Google Maps and other Java apps.
The killer application is of course the phone, and the Treo 750 doesn't disappoint. While audio quality wasn't among the best on prior Treo models, the 750 has excellent call quality. Incoming and outgoing voice sound like a land line (in part due to 3G's superior voice codecs) and volume is more than adequate unless you're making a call from the Super Bowl. Reception on 3G is good, and is very similar to the Cingular 8525 (the BlackJack is the ultimate king of RF for 3G at the moment). Reception in GSM (non-3G) areas in very good. The Treo has a rear-firing speakerphone and a 2.5mm stereo headset jack (not proprietary thank goodness) and comes with a stereo earbud headset with inline mic.
Palm has customized the Treo 750 to ensure you need not fiddle around with the device while jogging through the airport or driving a car. MS Voice Command 1.5 with added support for Bluetooth headsets provides true voice recognition (no tags or training required). You can assign a button (we used the side button initially assigned to the camera) to launch Voice Command or press and hold the call button on handsfree Bluetooth headsets to start Voice Command. We tested the Treo with the Plantronics Discovery 640 and this worked perfectly. In fact you can press the headset button then ask the Treo "what is my next appointment" or "what time is it?" and it will tell you over Bluetooth. On-device applications such as Today Screen speed dial and one-touch dialing (press and hold a key you've assigned to a contact ) simplify dialing when not using a Bluetooth headset.
Horsepower and Performance
We've seen Samsung's ARM/XScale compatible processors in quite a few PDA phones in the past year, and Palm has joined the ranks with the Treo 750's 300MHz Samsung SC32442A CPU. We love the strong performance combined with power-savings features of Samsung's mobile processors-- two things that don't usually go together in the world of CPUs. By Windows Mobile 5 standards the Treo 750 is very responsive (likely Palm is using some intelligent caching) with no undo lag opening menus and applications. It opens a 500 contact database quickly and has no problem scrolling quickly. 240 x 240 games aren't abundant, but those games that do support that resolution ran well. Video playback is also good, but we'll cover that later.
Size comparison: the i-mate JAQ3, BlackBerry 8703e, Treo 750, Treo 700p and the Samsung BlackJack
Unlike the first Windows Mobile Treo to market (700w), the Treo 750 has plenty of RAM to run programs-- 64 megs which is standard for Windows Mobile devices. Of that 64 megs, approximately 29 are free after booting and the Treo has 128 megs of flash ROM, of which ~ 60 megs are available for your use as persistent memory that will survive a complete battery drain. For storage expansion the Treo has a miniSD slot (a rarity now that most phones have moved to the annoyingly small MicroSD standard) and can accept cards up to 2 gigs. The slot also supports SDIO and the Treo is compatible with Spectec's miniSD WiFi 802.11b card.
Display and Multimedia
While square screens running at 240 x 240 pixel resolution aren't a power user's dream, they're here to stay for the time being since they easily fit into a device with a fixed keyboard. Found on the HP iPAQ hw6945 and other Windows Mobile Treo models, these screens are easy on the eyes but you do lose 80 pixels in one direction compared to standard 320 x 240 QVGA displays. Perhaps we'll one day see a 320 x 240 landscape display on a Treo, similar to the new i-mate JAQ3 Pocket PC phone, but the drawback is smaller text and graphics as those pixels are crammed into a Treo ansd JAQ3-sized 2.6" LCD. The Treo's transflective touch screen is capable of displaying 65K colors and supports both portrait and landscape modes, though I can't imagine a reason to switch to landscape on a square display. It's quite bright, has good color saturation and is sharp, though it won't strike you as being as sharp as the Cingular 8525 since it doesn't have as many pixels crammed into the same space (higher pixel density creates a sense of of sharpness).
Like all Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC and Smartphones, the Treo comes with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile for MP3, Internet radio and video playback (WMV, ASF and 3GP). You can use 3rd party players and you can stream music from iTunes to the Treo using the bundled (via download link) Avvenu software. Sound through stereo headphones is excellent and sound from the rear-firing speaker is clear. Though the Treo's square screen doesn't offer the perfect aspect ratio for video playback, video does playback very well thanks to an ATI graphics accelerator. We tested the Treo using the excellent free TCPMP .72 beta and our usual test file: "The Chosen" (a BMW Films short flick with Clive Owen) which is a 4:26 minute long, 10 meg MPEG1 file recorded at 320 x 240, 308 kb/s.
Average speed: 477.40%Bench Frame Rate: 114.58Bench. Data Rate: 1.5 Mbit/sOrig. Frame Rate: 24fpsOrig. Data Rate: 310 kbit/s
Those are excellent benchmark results and they beat the Treo 700w and 700wx by 3x! In fact, average speed beats the Cingular 8525 (549%), though the 8525 had a slightly better bench data rate of 1.7 MBit/s. For you non-geeks, what does this mean? The Treo 750 does a great job of playing video and it isn't just a warmed over Treo 700w.
We've already covered some of Palm's customizations and additions, but let's review the standard Windows Mobile software offerings for those who aren't Pocket PC aficionados. All Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Pocket PC Phone Edition devices have touch screens plus handwriting recognition and on-screen keyboards, though you likely won't need the software keyboard and handwriting recognition much thanks to thereof's QWERTY thumb keyboard. They also include Microsoft's Mobile Office suite (view and edit Word and Excel docs, view PowerPoint presentations), Outlook Mobile (and desktop Outlook 2002), Internet Explorer Mobile, Windows Media Player Mobile 10, Terminal Services, Modem Link, Pictures and Videos, Pocket MSN (Hotmail, MSN Messenger), File Explorer, Solitaire, Bubble Breaker, Calculator and support for secure certificates and VPN connections. Outlook on the PDA has calendar, contacts, tasks, notes and email, which you can sync to a Windows desktop running Outlook. Windows Mobile devices sync only to Windows, so Mac users will need to purchase Missing Sync from MarkSpace.
Palm adds their popular threaded SMS application, a wired car kit manager, Keyguard (lock the Treo's buttons with an option to disable the touch screen when in a call), Sounds (an easy way to add ringtones), a Windows desktop Bluetooth plugin, and a Wireless Manager to control the phone and Bluetooth radios. The third party software bundle is quite generous: you get MS Voice Command, Handmark Express, Sprite Backup, Astraware's Dynomite (game), Picsel's PDF viewer and download links for Avvenu and Audible. The Treo 750 is compatible with TeleNav (a subscription navigation service billed by Cingular).
Those of you who've read our Treo 700 series reviews know that we were not fans of the 1.3MP camera in those phones. Happily, the Treo 750 takes much improved images that have good color saturation, not too much noise (even low-light indoor shots are decent, such as the cat photo below) and generally correct color balance. We don't know if Palm changed the actual camera hardware, lens or simply improved image processing but the Treo 750 undeniably takes better photos than our in-house Treo 700p as well as the Treo 700w and 700wx. The Treo 750 can take photos at a maximum of 1280 x1024 pixels and supports a variety of lower resolutions suitable for MMS, email and Caller ID photos. It has normal, burst and timer modes and offers 2x digital zoom. There are three image quality settings and you can tell the Treo to save photos to a miniSD card. There are no special effects or other settings since the Treo actually uses Microsoft's Pictures and Videos application (a standard component of Windows Mobile 5) as a camera application.
The Treo 750 can shoot video with audio in 3GP format at a surprisingly high 30fps. Videos have good color and are very smooth thanks to the high recording frame rate, though they are somewhat blocky. You can turn off audio recording, set resolution to either 352 x 288 (CIF) or 176 x 144 and specify recording length (15 seconds, 30 seconds or unlimited).
Things have improved in the Bluetooth camp too. Past Treo models had famously poor Bluetooth range (except the Treo 680) and sometimes iffy status on DUN (dial up networking). The Treo 750 has absolutely normal Bluetooth range by phone standards, fully supports handsfree profile features and has DUN. Not only that but it has A2DP for stereo through Bluetooth headphones and handles AVRC (as tested with the Plantronics Pulsar 590) for playback control using the headphone buttons. The Treo has a Bluetooth 1.2 radio and supports headset, handsfree, A2DP, DUN, serial port (used by Bluetooth GPS) and file transfer profiles. It played well with our test headsets and a Motorola portable car kit. We noted it got better range with our beloved Plantronics Discovery 640 (that headset doesn't have good range) than other phones we've tested. Overall audio quality over Bluetooth for mono and stereo solutions was very good.
Since the Treo 680 and 750 have been on a size and weight reduction plan, the Treo 750 uses a 1200 mAh Lithium Ion battery, down from the sizeable 1,800 mAh battery used in older Palm Treo smartphones. Thus with moderate use, we had to charge the Treo every other day (push email was not on). If you use push email from 8am to 6pm, expect to charge the Treo nightly or every 1.5 days. Surprisingly the Treo 750 outlasts the Palm OS Treo 680 which lacks power hungry 3G. The Treo ships with a compact world charger (110-240v) and you will need to take it on the road since it doesn't support USB charging (Palm and 3rd party sync n' charge cables for the Treo 700 we tested will only sync, not charge).
No, it's not an earth-shattering Treo, but it's by no means a re-warmed Treo 700wx either. The Treo 750 offers very good performance with a new CPU, an improved camera, enhanced video playback, a more solid Bluetooth implementation in a lighter, slimmer, antenna-less casing. And best of all for Cingular customers, a Windows Mobile Treo is finally available for GSM! While we found some Treo models too quiet (i.e.: the Treo 650) and only average on call quality, the Treo 750 is both loud and land line clear. And being a Treo, it feels absolutely great in hand. All in all, Palm's usability customizations and great hardware design make the Treo 750 an obvious choice for those on the go who crave one-handed operation and ease of use along with the power of Windows Mobile.
Pro: Snappy performance, 3G (though we'll have to wait for the official upgrade from UMTS to the even faster HSDPA flavor of 3G), excellent usability, great form factor and ever-ready keyboard. We like the new anti-slip surface coating and the lack of an external antenna. Bluetooth is solid and the camera takes decent photos as well as video at 30fps. Kudos to Palm for including MS Voice Command with enhancements to support Bluetooth headsets.
Con: The smaller battery means shorter battery life-- though our Treo 750 outlasts our BlackJack, it doesn't last as long as the Cingular 8525. No WiFi built-in, so you'll need to buy a miniSD WiFi card if you're in need. Though for us, 3G is much more important than WiFi and we find ourselves rarely using WiFi on our 8525. The 240 x 240 resolution display means you'll see a bit less on screen and while most applications support that resolution, you'll find games that don't. We hope Palm's next Windows Mobile Treo has a 320 x 240 landscape display.
