HP recently took the lead in server sales from IBM, although there is very little in it. That leap ahead may well be the result of a very busy time for the company since our previous server snapshot more than a year ago. This includes a refresh of the entire Integrity and ProLiant lines, as well as HP making a major play on convergence.Our latest Server Buyer's Guide looks at what the No. 1 server hardware vendor is selling these days.
"HP has invested a lot in systems management and providing single pane of glass management for spanning multiple chip architectures and operating systems," said Dan Olds, an analyst with Gabriel Consulting Group. "This is a compelling and powerful value proposition and is resonating with customers."ProLiant Servers
HP ProLiant servers appear to now be the primary focus of HP. The company owns more than one-third of the x86 server space, well ahead of the competition. According to Olds, HP (NYSE: HPQ) is at around 35 percent in this area, compared to Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) with 21 percent in second spot.
Users have a great deal of choice with the OEM, as it offers dozens of servers that cover the entire x86 gamut. More models are coming out on a monthly basis.
HP's Server Line Up at a Glance
In March, for example, HP added the BL280c, BL2x220c, BL460c, BL490cG6 server blades and the WS460c G6 workstation blade. In addition, rack-optimized servers were added -- the DL160, DL170h, DL180, DL320, DL360 and DL380 G6. The ProLiant ML330 and ML350 G6 tower servers were releases for small business workloads, while the SL160z, SL170z and SL2x170z G6 were designed for scale-out environments.
"Additionally in March, HP announced the next generation of HP ProLiant servers that offer a significant performance boost and enhanced power savings over previous generations, which included the HP ProLiant DL165, DL385 and SL165z G7 servers," said Lorraine Bartlett, vice president of marketing, Business Critical Systems, HP. "The new HP ProLiant G7 servers with AMD Opteron 6100 Series processors increase operational efficiencies."
According to Bartlett, these G7 servers combined with AMD Opteron 6100 series processors deliver a 27 times performance-per-watt increase over earlier models.
The G7 portfolio was again expanded in May with the ProLiant DL360 and DL380 as the new additions. Bartlett said these servers deliver up to a 20-to-1 consolidation ratio, reducing floor space and improving data center capacity.
In June, HP expanded the G7 portfolio yet again with the BL465c, BL685c, BL2x220, BL460c, BL620c and BL680c G7 -- three rackmount systems that include the DL580, DL585 and DL980 G7. These servers are based on Opteron 6100 Series and Intel Xeon 5600/7500 series processors.
Those users who prefer blades or racks, then, have plenty of choice: From simple low-cost models to high-end boxes with all imaginable bells and whistles. Similarly, in the tower category, HP provides a decent range of options. The grid below illustrates the wide range of servers to from which to choose.
Those who want to mix and match ProLiant towers, racks and blades within the data center benefit from HP's Converged Infrastructure portfolio, which is aimed at reducing the price and difficulty of server management by sharing common components across an ProLiant line.
There is also a strong sense of out with the old, in with the new. Many ProLiant G5 servers are being discontinued. These include the DL165 G5, DL185 G5, ML110 G5, ML115 G5, BL2x220 G5, BL460c G5, DL380 G5, DL385 G5 and ML370 G5.
"HP's blade everything strategy has paid off in a big way, and they're still the vendor to beat in this area," said Olds. They've also made the most of their partnerships with both Intel and AMD to offer a very wide range of products."Integrity Servers
According to Olds, however, HP doesn't seem to pay a lot of attention to its Intel Itanium-based Integrity server line. "Their dominance in x86 and blades seems to overshadow the Integrity offerings in terms of marketing focus and investment," he said. "However, HP sells quite a bit of Unix-based gear, typically the second place vendor after the IBM Power brand."
HP is particularly strong in certain segments of the Unix market. HP-UX based systems host more SAP, for example, than either IBM or Oracle (Sun) by a large margin. Olds added that the introduction of the long-delayed Itanium Tukwila processor, a new revisions of the HP-UX operating system and a published roadmap that runs out past five years have given HP's Unix customers a reason to take a look at refreshing their installed base.
Newer servers include Integrity blades, such as the BL860c i2, BL870c i2 and the BL890c i2. Bartlett said they all offer 2.5 times the compute density compared to traditional rack mount servers. These blades use the Intel Itanium 9300 series processor (two to four cores) and come with various amounts of memory. While the BL860c i2 comes with up to 96 GB RAM, the BL890c i2 has up to 384 GB.
But blades aren't the only game in town on Integrity. The rx2800 i2 is a newer two-socket rackmount server aimed at SMBs or small remote deployments, such as branch office applications. It offers expanded memory, I/O and disk capacity in a 2U footprint with eight-core scalability. At the top of the line is the Integrity Superdome 2 that includes a modular, bladed design, common components and standard racks intended to power mission-critical applications.
"HP recently introduced an entirely new design for the Superdome system that emphasizes modularity while preserving the ability to run very large single system images," said Olds. "It's an impressive server, but, typically for HP, seems to be flying under the radar a bit in terms of market awareness."
Some features include an intelligent fault-tolerant Crossbar Fabric that routes data or transactions to the faster, most optimal pathways between blades and I/O. The Superdome boasts power-on-once technology with hot-swappable components, online replaceable crossbars, and the Superdome 2 Analysis Engine for predictive error handling and analysis. It also offers three packages for scale-as-you-grow flexibility, offered in eight-socket, 16-socket and 32-socket configurations.
"For over 10 years HP Integrity servers, including Superdome, have powered some of the world's most demanding, mission-critical environments –- especially in verticals like financial services, manufacturing and distribution, health care, as well as telecommunications," said Bartlett. In my role as HP's CTO, I spend a lot of time pondering questions such as: What will future customers need from their HP products? How do we start the work now to meet those demands?
But there are also bigger, more far-reaching questions that influence how everyone at HP thinks about the work we do and the impact we can have as a company. What will society look like in 30 years? What will be the respective roles of automation and skilled labor? How will Asia's rise impact our business model? How do we create a more sustainable future?
Each of these questions offers an opening into a heady topic with no simple answer. But we must consider them, because they will directly impact how we move forward as a company and a society.
That's why we've formalized our analysis and forecasting process into a body of work we call Megatrends, a systematic effort to identify the global technological, economic and social currents that are influencing how people will live and work around the world. Since 2016, our annual Megatrends report has explored the hidden patterns that will move markets and people.
This body of work has led to a striking realization over the years: We are now witnessing the early stages of a technological, socioeconomic and demographic revolution that will likely lead to a new era for humanity. The signal has only grown stronger with this year's report. People, machines, data and energy are now so deeply connected to each other, that for many but not all in the current world, creating a better future will require finding the balance between them all.
Urbanization unlocks prosperity and new challenges
Let's start with the people that are at the center of this picture. We pored over volumes of socioeconomic data and consulted with leading economists to uncover the trends that our society is most likely to encounter in coming years. Today, just over half of the global population resides in cities, and the UN predicts that number will grow to 68 percent by 2050. The future will be filled with large and mega cities that will each be home to at least 5 million inhabitants. This year, we explored what the economic situation will be like for those urban citizens and those in smaller urban areas, in all places where people will be accruing more disposable income over the next three decades. The answer tells us where tomorrow's markets and talent will be.
The data points to more people moving out of poverty and into the middle class -- particularly in Asia, North America and Europe. Our analysis finds that Asian workers, on average, will have seen their average household disposable income more than triple from 2001 to 2035 in constant 2015 dollars. In cities of all sizes around the world, we expect the average household income to grow by an average of 2 percent annually through 2030. That's a big boost in spending power.
What's driving this urbanization and income rise? Growing economies creating more jobs, especially a constantly growing demand for skilled labor in urban settings.
Yet we already know the high-tech workforce needed to sustain economic growth won't be sufficient to meet the demand for labor. Research shows there will be a global shortage of around 85 million high-skilled workers by 2030. As an extreme example, Singapore is expected to register a stunning labor shortage of 1.1 million people out of a workforce totaling 4 million by 2030.
And because technology is changing so rapidly, those who are already in the skilled workforce need to embrace lifelong education and constantly develop new skills to keep pace. Up to half of IT-sector workers need retraining by 2022 to remain effective. Ironically, as technology creates a skills gap, it can also help close that gap, creating accessible, scalable upskilling opportunities via gamified educational platforms, VR-based training and more.
Automation accelerates productivity and innovation
But bolstering the number of high-skilled workers isn't going to fix the problem alone. Companies are aggressively investing in automation to deal with rising demands and our growing labor shortages. It's possible we'll see the number of tasks that machines perform increasing by 50 percent in coming years.
Automation is a critical component to boosting global economic productivity, shifting labor from routine tasks to higher-skilled and higher-paying jobs, and opening up the middle class to millions of people. This is where the machines and data come in.
Smart machines that can collect data, learn from it and respond are the heart of automation. Every day, more smart machines are coming online, ranging from power generators and manufacturing robots to smart speakers and autonomous cars, and they are starting to communicate with each other at the internet's edges. The lifeblood of this world of sensors and actuators is data, which is central to the evolving rate of AI and machine learning, the move from cloud to edge computing, and the role that software and digital twins will play.
Right now, it takes too long to transmit all the data being generated at the edge to distant cloud servers, process it and then return other data in the form of decisions -- and there already isn't enough bandwidth to do it. That's why engineers are developing powerful, tiny computer processors called Machine Learning Accelerators (MLAs) that can crunch data on the spot much more efficiently, and act on it immediately. This enables services that have resided in the cloud to move down into devices at the edge, what's known as edge computing.
At the same time, the network itself is getting a major upgrade to boost bandwidth and reduce latency. Fifth-generation, or 5G, mobile cell networks will start switching on this year, and while their rollout may take years, the era of ubiquitous wireless broadband will begin. Data transmission and reception across the network will be nearly instantaneous. Edge computing and 5G will dramatically expand opportunities to adopt automation and accelerate the use of edge-driven automation, especially for critical sensing and actuation events where timeliness is critical.
As just one example from our business, HP's giant industrial presses that can rapidly print huge runs of packaging need systems that can monitor for defects. Press-mounted cameras built with powerful machine-learning software could detect print-run issues in real time and give the machine the information it needs to automatically correct itself. But for such capabilities to become reality, we need to build powerful chips that can handle computer vision analysis locally. That's where edge-computing innovation comes in.
The impending commercialization of autonomous vehicles also illustrates the critical importance of edge computing. Picture this: While riding along in one of these robotic cars, a pedestrian holding an umbrella crosses into your path. You'll need the vehicle's sensors to instantly transmit data to stop the car, not send it to a distant server that's running imagery analysis software. Such processing needs to be embedded within the car itself, so it can make decisions without fail and nearly instantly.
Other applications, like autonomous vehicle networking, which lets individual machines communicate with each other and with transportation infrastructure to adjust speed, caravan and efficiently use parking locations, will only become possible with the more robust, flexible and higher bandwidth 5G rollout.
Manufacturing, and work itself, gets a digital upgrade
As our machines are asked to gather more data, make inferences from it and need to complete more complex tasks, they're going to need more advanced operating instructions. To meet demands like those of smart industrial presses and autonomous vehicles, researchers are advancing machine learning so computers can make decisions, not from hard-coded firmware, but from models within the machines that "learn" from data coming from a machine's sensors and make inferences that drive their decisions on how to operate.
This development, called software 2.0, is seeing software-bsed models replace the complex code approach that software engineers have been using for years to write firmware. Software 2.0, in combination with these machine learning models, can produce more robust and flexible solutions to help machines process immense amounts of data and make decisions in more nuanced ways. Along with edge computing, this approach would be much more effective at, for example, helping an autonomous car identify a crossing pedestrian whose head and torso are obstructed by an open umbrella. Before encountering this situation, the software is trained on huge numbers of possible iterations of what a pedestrian looks like. This creates a superfast decision-making loop.
When machines can operate and learn in response to the data they sense and capture, it becomes possible to create virtual models of the machines which enable us to predict, simulate and optimzie their operations in environments before they are there. This concept, called the digital twin, enables virtual machines that precisely mimic their real-life counterparts could dramatically alter the nature of work through virtual prototyping and modeling. Software can run huge cycles of tests on these simulations to understand how an actual object would operate in the real world and make improvements before it's produced.
Companies and other organizations are already starting to deploy digital twin technologies, and the nascent innovation will only become more useful as more data becomes available and models become better at simulating the real world. Manufacturers are testing and improving new microchip designs using virtual models to maximize heat handling. Turbine makers simulate operating machinery to predict when they need maintenance before they break down. Cities from Cambridge to Singapore are ingesting real-world data into simulations to help deliver services to citizens.
Sustainable energy use becomes an imperative
Higher consumption from a growing middle class and the rise of automation will translate to greater energy demand. Tomorrow's societies and the machines that make them possible will require massive amounts of power to survive. This requires more advanced technology and putting energy efficiency in compute and our products, as well as sustainability, at the center of our planning.
Advances like additive manufacturing are doing just that. By building objects through adding material -- instead of the traditional subtractive manufacturing process that cuts objects from blocks of material -- manufacturers and consumers, like airlines, can potentially save huge amounts of raw materials and energy. This method also unlocks new component designs that weren't buildable with subtractive methods. We reviewed one study that concluded additive manufacturing in the aerospace sector could reduce an Airbus A320's weight from more than 93,000 pounds to just over 73,000 pounds. Since one pound of aircraft weight reduction translates to 114 pounds of annual fuel consumption savings, additive manufacturing has the potential to deliver huge benefits to companies, people and the planet.
Innovations like edge computing also fit the bill. It takes a great deal of electricity to transmit huge amounts of data across networks. Keeping computational processing local erases that demand. That's why many start-ups and other companies are developing more capable chips, such as MLAs, that can handle data at the edge and operate at much lower power than the remote server processes they replace in the cloud, or the energy-hungry Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) used today for similar tasks in client computing.
The 5G rollout, meanwhile, will unlock other opportunities for systemic energy conservation. Improved wireless telecommunications will help the Internet of Things achieve what its developers have always envisioned -- smart machines that make up autonomous vehicle fleets, smart city infrastructure and streamlined industrial processes featuring predictive maintenance will allow massive energy efficiency upgrades. Think of a future where robotic cars talk to each other and infrastructure over no-latency wireless networks to eliminate the need for stoplights and maximize parking in crowded cities.
Companies that invest in digital twins to virtualize equipment prototyping and deployment will decrease energy and raw material use while driving up efficiency in the real machines that come from the process. Just imagine a jet engine prototype's digital twin that is tested and improved for operating efficiency, heat management and design that limits vibration before any manufacturing begins. This speeds up production timelines and decreases fuel use and maintenance downtimes once the engine is installed on aircraft. This advance is more sustainable by design. And sustainability is key to creating a future where our technology helps make a better world.
For HP, understanding these sweeping demographic, socioeconomic and technology trends -- and how they relate to one another -- is incredibly important. People, machines, data and energy are all deeply intertwined in our modern world, and profound changes in each will impact all the others. The interplay between them will determine the direction of HP, the global economy and civilization. That's why every one of us needs to pay attention.

The server industry is heading for a shakeup as Dell, Cisco and the original design manufacturing vendors take major market share away from the traditional market leaders Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Oracle.
Worldwide server shipments fell in the first quarter 2013 by 0.7 percent, while revenue fell 5 percent, compared to the first quarter of 2012, according to Gartner, which on Tuesday released its quarterly server sales report.
Dell, as predicted in earlier CRN reports, was the big winner, with total server shipments for the quarter up 2.6 percent and total server revenue up 14.4 percent, bringing the company to within striking distance of No. 1 vendor HP.

However, for sheer growth, the prize this quarter goes to Cisco, which saw server revenue grow by 34.3 percent over last year, and by the server self-build and ODM vendors which saw shipments grow by 34.7 percent and revenue by 34.5 percent, Gartner said.
The self-build and ODM category includes such ODM vendors as Quanta, Wistron Wiwynn and Synnex's Hyve solutions, as well as self-build companies in the cloud infrastructure space such as Facebook and Google.
The share shift comes at a time when the server industry as a whole is experiencing a drop due to three trends, said Jeffrey Hewitt, research vice president at Gartner.
The first is economics. Gartner said that the poor economic condition in Europe took a toll on server sales, which in the first quarter fell 9.6 percent in terms of revenue and 6.8 percent in terms of shipments.
"The server market is typically a trailing indicator of economic conditions," Hewitt said. "Asia-Pacific-Japan is growing the strongest, while the U.S. is showing some signs of growth."
The second trend is the strong growth of virtualization, which is letting businesses run increasingly more virtual machines with increasingly higher performance on ever fewer physical servers, Hewitt said.
The third is outsourcing and the cloud. "Small businesses are looking at what's happening with outsourcing and the cloud, and are saying, 'Hmmm, I gotta look at this,'" he said.
HP is still the largest server vendor in terms of shipments, while IBM keeps its title as the largest server vendor in terms of revenue, Gartner reported.
NEXT: x86 Server Market Dynamics Changing
The biggest part of the market, the x86-based server business, saw server shipments basically flat from last year at 2.3 million units, while revenue for this part of the business rose 1.8 percent.
HP remained the leader of the x86 server business, with a 25.1-percent share of shipments and 29.1-percent share of revenue. However, the company experienced a 15 percent drop in shipments over last year to 576,835 servers, which lead to a 10.9 percent drop in server revenue to 2.6 billion.
Dell's x86 server shipments, on the other hand, rose 2.6 percent to 516,355 units, pushing revenue for the quarter 14.4 percent to $2.1 billion.
IBM maintained its third-place position in the x86 server market with shipments of 212,516 million units, down 13.6 percent over last year. That equaled about $1.2 billion in revenue, down 9.1 percent. Should IBM's reported sale of part of its x86 server business to China-based Lenovo prove true, IBM could drop out of the top five x86 server vendors.
Cisco is the No. 4 x86 server vendor in terms of revenue, which rose a big 34.3 percent over last year to $450 million. However, the fourth spot in terms of shipments was taken by the self-build and ODM server vendors whose cloud and Internet infrastructure business caused their shipments to rise 34.7 percent to 167,200 units.
"We're seeing increasing competition from Cisco," Gartner's Hewitt said. "They're in every data center in the world. Offering Cisco servers is, and I really hate to use the analogy, as easy as asking, 'Do you want fries with that?' But they're also executing. Cisco is working with storage vendors EMC and NetApp."
The self-build and ODM vendors also took the No. 5 position with revenue of $434 million, up 34.5 percent over last year. Sales of competing servers from Dell and HP are included in those vendors' numbers, Hewitt said. "Dell has been selling to companies like Microsoft with scalable data centers and is used to high-volume market," he said.
HP's server sales are down in part because of a reorganization of its server business, Hewitt said. "HP has set the expectations that it is time to go forward and to get some market traction," he said.
NEXT: RISC/Itanium Server Market Continues To Plummet
Meanwhile, the market for RISC and Itanium-based servers continues to plummet.
Gartner estimated RISC/Itanium server shipments for the first quarter of 27,973 units, down 38.8 percent over last year. Revenue for those servers fell 35.8 percent to $1.4 billion.
IBM is still the leader in this part of the market despite an 18.9 percent drop in shipments and a 32.3-percent drop in revenue. Oracle saw its shipments dive by 60.4 percent to 7,459 units, with revenue falling 38.3 percent. HP's shipments fell 39.0 percent, with revenue falling 39.6 percent.
Rich Baldwin, CIO and chief strategy officer at Nth Generation Computing, a San Diego-based solution provider and HP partner, said the drop in HP server sales is really just a blip on the radar, and that HP is in position to strengthen its server business.
"It's true the industry is changing," Baldwin said. "I see the cloud taking share. But I also see Meg [Whitman, HP's CEO,] making the right changes and empowering her people. Moral at HP is high."
HP sales have had to contend with strong pricing competition from Dell, and HP is responding, Baldwin said. In addition, he said, Whitman has committed her company to win against Dell in the server market.
"HP is telling us, 'We're not going to lose on price,'" he said. "Some people are going to buy on price today, but HP is doing what it takes to respond."
While Dell's server sales are up, Dell's profits continue to bleed, Baldwin said. "Sure, you can grab share with lower profits, but that's not a sustainable business model," he said.
Gartner's Hewitt is not convinced that Dell is getting market share just by ignoring profits. "I see Dell's ASPs [average selling prices] growing. They're selling a viable server for virtualization. And they're selling in new geographies."
In the RISC/Itanium market, HP's Superdome and other Itanium-based servers risk becoming irrelevant despite HP's court victory vs. Oracle over Oracle's decision to stop developing software for HP's Itanium servers, Baldwin said.
"We are seeing big customers who buy Superdome servers placing fewer orders," Baldwin said. "And those servers are priced at around a million dollars. However, things are moving to industry-standard servers. HP's HP's Gen8 servers are doing well. In fact, they're doing so well that people don't need to buy as many. So the people who were buying Superdomes and now switching to ProLiant DL980s. Price for the DL980s are a magnitude of order less than Superdomes, but people buy multiple DL980s."
HP declined to discuss its falling server shipments and sales.
However, HP responded to CRN requests for more information with an email which read, "HP continues to be the No. 1 worldwide server leader for 17 years and now 68 quarters. As a leader in defining next-generation computing platforms for decades. HP recently unveiled the world’s first commercially available HP Moonshot system, delivering compelling new infrastructure economics by using up to 89 percent less energy, 80 percent less space and costing less than 77 percent compared to traditional servers."
