    GRANITE CITY — “Hellboy” took a back seat to punctuality and kindness Thursday morning, as about 75 business, industry and government officials came out for the premiere of a locally-produced video on soft skills.

    “Building Blocks For Success: Your Choices, Your Career, Your Future” came out of a partnership between the Chamber of Commerce of Southwestern Madison County and Madison County Employment & Training Department.

    Soft skills, sometimes referred to as “essential skills,” are learned habits like punctuality, dependability, and according to some of the presenters, kindness.

    “A lot of people are looking for that personable, kind, considerate individual to advance their company,” said Dan Buck, managing partner of Big Sports Properties.

    He was one of 14 business leaders who talked on specific subjects ranging from punctuality and communication to adaptability and making good personal choices.

    The video was first shown at a Madison-Bond Workforce Innovation Board meeting in Wood River, and then presented at a national conference of the National Association of Workforce Boards in Washington, D.C. before Thursday’s showing at the Granite City Cine. It was in Theater 2, where the marquee noted that “Hellboy” was normally the featured film.

    “We just decided that everybody talks about the lack of soft skills,” said Rosemarie Brown, executive director of the Chamber. “We decided we need to do something about it. We don’t teach soft skills to our younger generation.”

    Production took several months.

    The video is introduced by NAWB President and CEO Ronald Painter, one of the reasons it was first shown at the group’s national conference.

    He was quickly followed by James Glik, vice president of the Granite City-based Glik Stores.

    “First impressions are very important,” he said, with bullet points about a firm handshake, personal appearance, punctuality and the need to stay focused.

    Other presenters included Ed Cunningham, president and CEO of Gateway Regional Medical Center; Steve Faust, business development/diversity coordinator of Icon Mechanical; Kathy Federico, executive manager of Jack Schmitt Chevrolet; Curtis Francois, president and CEO of Gateway Motorsports Park; Jerry Knoyle, refinery manager of Phillips 66; Richard Mark, president and CEO of Ameren Illinois; Michael Patton, general manager of U.S. Steel Corp.; Randall Pembrook, chancellor of SIUE; Jane Saale, president and CEO of Cope Plastics Inc.; and Dennis Wilmsmeyer, executive director of America’s Central Port.

    Buck closed the video with a discussion about personal decisions, much of it related to online activity.

    “Don’t post anything online you don’t want your mother to see,” he said during the video.

    Afterward, he continued to discuss that.

    “I think today’s society is so open book,” he said after the premiere. “Everything you say and do and communicate online is forever, and I think kids don’t often realize that.”

    He noted that some of that information can “isolate” people from job opportunities.

    “If it’s out there, it’s out there for everybody, including future employers,” he said.

    He also talked about the larger picture, where companies are more concerned about the type of employees they are hiring, rather than skills or experience.

    “What prospective employees or prospective employees need to realize is good companies are looking to create culture,” he said. “They’re not just looking to create a product or service; they’re looking to create a culture that can retain employees. You have to surround yourself with people who are thoughtful, who are considerate, who are good team players, who are kind because that’s going to ultimately impact everybody around them.

    “If they don’t have those qualities, forget your job skills, forget your experience,” he added. “If you don’t fit the cultural goals of that company you won’t be hired.”

    The video will be made available to business groups, schools and other community groups.

    “We hope to give this to every business that might be able to utilize it,” Brown said. “It’s 24 minutes long. Most companies are not going to use the full 24 minutes, but they can break it down in segments. If it’s communications they need some help with, or punctuality, they can break it down and use it the way they want.”

    The video was funded through an $8,000 grant through MCET.

    They are also planning the next video project, according to Paul Wellhausen, vice president of SCF Lewis and Clark Marine, Chamber Foundation Board president and WIB vice chair.

    ”I don’t know how long it will take us, because this one took us a year to get this one done,” Wellhausen said.

    Wellhausen said the next video would be about life from an employee’s perspective. He said many studies have been done on what an employee feels is the most important thing to them in their careers “Many of us from the business standpoint on the other side of life — the managerial side —always comes to the fact its salaries that are most important,” he said. “Spoiler alert — it is not! We want to show in our next video what it’s going to take to keep people growing productively in our companies.”
