informationIBM Modernizes Domino business App Platform
IBM has modernized Domino, its business app platform with roots in the Lotus Notes ecosystem that debuted in 1989.
as soon as primarily customary because the server-facet phase of Lotus Notes, Domino is a multi-faceted platform that offers app construction -- using the rapid-software-building strategy -- and greater.
In revamping the 29-12 months-old platform, IBM has greater cloud support, mobile utility development, analytics and boosted the collaboration capabilities that were a mainstay of Lotus Notes, which became IBM Notes in a 1995 acquisition.
Two of essentially the most extremely good modernizations within the new IBM Domino v10 are mobile app construction capabilities and the embody of node.js.
The better cellular development functionality is available in the new IBM Domino mobile Apps, which is being previewed as a beta for which developers can register. Furthering the IBM/Apple business relationship, the providing lets builders create Apple iPad company apps. "IBM Domino also replicates data between the server and native version of your purposes, so your team will also be productive even without network connectivity," the business stated.
an additional new feature is the potential for developers to call any relaxation APIs from Domino functions, allowing the means, for examples, so as to add Google Maps functionality, pull in Salesforce consumer records or leverage IBM's Watson capabilities.
the brand new Domino v10 stems from a building contract IBM entered into with HCL applied sciences a yr ago.
David Ramel is the editor of visual Studio journal.
IBM introduced closing night that it's selling the ultimate components from its 1995 acquisition of Lotus to Indian firm HCL for $1.8 billion.
IBM paid $3.5 billion for Lotus back within the day. The huge items here are Lotus Notes, Domino and Portal. These had been a huge part of IBM’s commercial enterprise company for a long time, but final yr huge Blue all started to draw back, selling the construction part to HCL, while protecting control of sales and advertising.
This announcement marks the conclusion of the road for IBM involvement. With the building of the platform out of its handle, and in want of money after spending $34 billion for purple Hat, in all probability IBM quite simply decided it now not made experience to preserve any a part of this in-condominium.
As for HCL, it sees a chance to proceed to build the Notes/Domino company, and it’s seizing it with this buy. “The significant-scale deployments of those items supply us with a pretty good chance to attain and serve heaps of international agencies throughout a big range of industries and markets,” C Vijayakumar, president and CEO at HCL applied sciences, referred to in a statement announcing the deal.
Alan Lepofsky, an analyst at Constellation research who maintains close watch on the commercial enterprise collaboration area, says the sale might symbolize a fresh beginning for software that IBM hasn’t definitely been paying close attention to for some time. “HCL is much more interested in Notes/Domino than IBM has been for a decade. they are investing closely, trying to rejuvenate the brand,” Lepofsky told TechCrunch.
while this software may consider lengthy in the tooth, Notes and Domino are nonetheless in use in many corners of the enterprise, and here is especially true in EMEA (Europe, center East and Africa) and AP (Asia Pacific), Lepofsky referred to.
He brought that IBM seems to be absolutely exiting the collaboration space with this sale. “It looks that IBM is finished with collaboration, out of the video game,” he mentioned.
This flow makes sense for IBM, which is moving in a different direction as it develops its cloud enterprise. The pink Hat acquisition in October, in particular, shows that the business wants to include private and hybrid cloud deployments, and older software like Lotus Notes and Domino don’t really play a role in that world.
The deal, which is field to regulatory approval processes, is expected to shut within the center of subsequent yr.

IBM hasn’t precisely been knocking the cowl off the ball recently when it involves the Domino family of products working on IBM i, or any platform for that count. however when IBM and its new development associate HCL finally unveil Domino 10 to the realm on October 9, it could be the beginning of a good comeback story.
That’s the prediction of Domino advisor Kim Greene, who has been working with the software on the IBM i platform for decades. Greene has been intently observing activities unfold due to the fact that HCL technologies partnered with IBM to improve Domino and connected items closing October, and in accordance with her, issues really couldn’t be going an awful lot better.
“Domino is not lifeless,” Greene tells IT Jungle. “It’s alive, and extraordinary functionally is coming in edition 10, and that they’re planning element releases after that in addition to plotting out version 11. There’s a ton of center of attention and power.”
issues have been searching downright dismal for IBM i Domino retail outlets final September, earlier than HCL technologies stepped into the picture. There hadn’t been a tremendous unencumber in nearly a decade, considering the fact that edition 8.5 shipped, and IBM gave mixed messages about assist on IBM i. Rumors concerning the feasible loss of life of now not simply Domino, but Domino on IBM i, were circulating. IBM’s emphasis on the cloud was ill-received, and a lot of Domino customers migrated to different programs, despite the fact Greene says most of those were Domino stores running on windows.
but because of the infusion of energy that HCL has brought – as well as a extra enlightened standpoint on the rely from IBM – the longer term for Domino as an entire (and Domino on IBM i specially) seems shiny once more.
“They’re crystal clear that IBM HCL supports IBM i for Domino, Sametime, and vacationer going forward,” says Greene, who is primarily based close Rochester, Minnesota. “It’s a firm commitment. There’s not a ‘smartly, we’ll wait and notice.’ They’re working challenging to handle that and making sure that people be aware of that it's fully supported.”
Greene become one of about 60 Domino business luminaries who were selected to attend an HCL manufacturing unit tour in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, this July, which oddly ample featured a “Charlie and the Chocolate factory” theme to it. Greene says new IBM’s new Domino exec, Andrew Mandy, tracked her right down to discuss Domino on IBM i.
“He principally requested to satisfy with me,” says Greene, the principle of Kim Greene Consulting. “He said, ‘I’d like to be mindful the IBM i improved and remember what we need to do to attain the market and ensure we’re getting the note out that Domino, Sametime, and visitor are completely supported on IBM i. They’re in reality wanting to be sure that be aware gets out adequately.”
The first rate work over the past 12 months goes beyond the messaging and optics. in keeping with Greene, edition 10 brings a cornucopia of advantageous new points – including assist for Node.js – that should put Domino returned on the map when it involves constructing and operating web and cellular functions.
“Domino 10 goes to blow the doorways away for low-code building,” she says. “You not must be trained a proprietary technology similar to Xpages to do your mobile and internet application development. Node.js is basically large in the trade, so including the Node.js commercial enterprise framework to Domino unleashes a new era of development for the platform. which you can discover lots of builders that recognize [Node.js]. And it’s no longer that complex to be taught the [Domino] API set.”
There are also the self-curative capabilities of automatic cluster database symmetry and the automated database restoration function so one can automate holding NSF and DAOS content synchronized in a cluster and restore and change damaged or missing NSFs and NLOs between servers. It’s very standard for Domino clients to have missing pieces within the document-oriented database, and with Domino 10, fixing this is a good deal easier. The Notes client has additionally been up-to-date, and traveler and Sametime are slated for enhancements. (IBM Connections, the other piece of IBM’s Domino puzzle, changed into now not part of the contend with HCL and its future isn't certain.)
“as soon as Domino 10 comes out and purchasers see it, it’s going to be like, holy wow,” Greene says. “in case you take Domino 6, 7, 8, and 9 and mixed them collectively, it doesn’t even hardly contact 10. It’s an amazingly large unlock.”
There are other alterations happening that carry the potentialities for even more compelling points to enter the pipelines because HCL and IBM have developed a client advocacy program that allows for Domino shoppers of any dimension to meet without delay with the Domino developers.
“a person like myself who's a company companion can usher in a customer and meet without delay with the technical americans,” Greene says. “They find out what is it that you just need, and they hear. They wish to be sure that what they enhance makes experience and is some thing that people want. They’re no longer after simply the huge large monster purchasers.”
purchasers can also have a direct influence on future Domino points during the Domino2025 Product concepts Lab, the place they could put up their product request and vote on ideas. This lets the smaller Domino shops have their voices heard when it comes to product ideas, not just the large groups.
here’s a further positive sign on Domino on IBM i: HCL and IBM want to hire greater Domino IBM i developers who can support construct functionality for the IBM i platform, Greene says. they'd be a part of a Domino team that feels reinvigorated with a brand new sense of aim, she says.
“What I locate definitely miraculous is the Domino builders are only jazzed,” she says. “They’re attending to do the issues they desired to do for the final seven to eight years. It’s just like the handcuffs came off and they’re in a position to get in there and do the things they know should be completed, as a result of they’ve always listened to their valued clientele and companions. They most likely need to make their product better. if you don’t make it greater, you don’t promote it. all of them get it.”
Greene is in fact happy in regards to the trade of route that has took place with the platform that she has committed an excellent a part of her knowledgeable profession to serving (she has currently began working with MongoDB, which is a document-oriented NoSQL databases that in many ways is corresponding to Domino. certainly, IBM and HCL have taken to calling Domino a NoSQL platform).
however, there's one caveat to all the respectable news on Domino in commonplace, and Domino on IBM i principally. whereas Domino version 10 will ship for home windows and Linux systems within the fourth quarter, the version of Domino 10 that supports IBM i will be able to take a short time longer. There’s no longer even a beta edition of the code obtainable to are trying.
“We’re now not getting it right away,” she says, “but we’re getting it basically quickly.”

In the highly amplified world of information technology, the chatter about what’s next almost always drowns out the talk about what the majority of companies are capable of doing to help their businesses today. Innovation makes the news, but in the real world innovation isn’t the extreme sport that it’s often portrayed. Real innovation is results oriented. If you want to know the reality of IT departments running Lotus software on the IBM i platform, talk with some average companies.
There’s a great deal of innovation going on if you are willing to put innovation in perspective with where a given company has been and where it is going. Being evolutionary has always been more popular than being revolutionary. There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, there are many good reasons for it. Keep in mind that in some instances, the pace of evolution is quite brisk. Other times, it’s excruciatingly slow.
Whatever your preconceived notions are about companies that run Lotus Domino on the IBM i platform, let these four examples either reinforce your thinking or open your eyes to what life is like in this environment.
Gabriele Spaszewski — Dachser GmbH & Co. KG
Dachser is one of Europe’s leading logistics companies. For years it has run its business on IBM AS/400s, iSeries, System i, and now Power Systems with IBM i. And for as long as there has been Lotus Notes and Domino, Dachser has depended on that combination of servers and software to handle workflow and a substantial load of business communications with deep integration to its home-grown transport management software. It’s had opportunities to migrate from these systems, but has chosen not to.
There’s a strong connection between the IBM i platform and Lotus software users, but it’s a difficult one to assign any numbers. I know for a fact it’s hard to find an IBMer who will quantify this connection. That’s just the way it goes in the IBM i server business these days. But coming out of the annual Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Florida, three weeks ago, with its emphasis on Lotus as the leading edge of social business, I looked for some customers who would tell me what they were up to.
Dachser has a centralized Lotus environment on IBM i. It also has an experienced, well-educated staff to make it work well and the willingness to innovate.
The main mail server, a Power6-based Power 570, hosts 11,300 registered users in 240 branches and includes mail files in 11 languages. That equates to approximately 400,000 emails routed per day with an average mail delivery time of less than 1 second.
Those 11,000-plus users are in the processing of moving from Lotus Notes 7.0.1 on Citrix Presentation Server 4 to Notes 8.5.1 on XenApp 5. And soon after, there’s a plan to upgrade the servers to 8.5.2. The Notes database houses more than 200 document libraries and more than 100 in-house developed Lotus Notes applications that range from a simple dictionary to a complex CRM system that is accessed by close to 1,000 employees each day.
Three additional IBM i servers are set up for specific duties: one for Lotus Sametime integrated chat, one for a third-party content management system, and one for a portion of the CRM system.
Apart from the in-house developed apps, third-party products are used for group calendaring, fax software, and data transfer and synchronization between Lotus Domino and supported external systems.
The only pieces that don’t run on IBM i are the servers accessed by BlackBerry mobile users, which IBM did not design to run on IBM i.
“We are lucky that we have a lot of iSeries know-how in our company,” says Gabriele Spaszewski, team leader of Lotus Notes administration at Dachser in an email from Lotusphere. “They really know their job and they help us tailoring the OS so that it fits our needs. This is absolutely necessary if you plan to run Domino on iSeries, because unfortunately there aren’t a lot of people around knowing how to handle Domino on iSeries–you have a hard time finding some experts.”
Bob Laing — Independent Contractor
As an independent contractor in western New York, Bob Laing works with more than a dozen IBM i shops that run Domino and a few that run Domino on Windows. His view is a microcosm of the Domino on IBM i landscape. His clients are primarily manufacturers, but with a couple of insurance companies also in the mix. Most have an IBM i history that includes the iSeries, the AS/400, and the System/36 and System/38 eras.
The IT shops Laing supports vary in size from 10 users up to 500 users. He is the IT staff at small shops, while the larger companies have IT staffs in the range of 15 to 20 people, where his Domino expertise and IBM software/hardware skills (hardware installations, OS upgrades, PTF installations, and performance tuning) supplements the full-time personnel.
Most of his customers are current on OS and software upgrades, but are operating at a fairly basic feature/function level with little custom tweaking and performance tuning. They’ve been running this way for years, preferring the stability and the manageability that Domino on IBM i offers to the hoopla of social business and cloud computing, which are little more than curiosities at this point.
“I just went through a project where three Windows servers were consolidated to an existing iSeries,” Laing says. “The only required tuning involved the overnight backups. Domino runs great on iSeries and the box manages the memory it uses, the disk space it uses, and it can be tweaked–but I have never seen that done locally. I’ve often seen shops consolidating from multiple iSeries to one iSeries because you no longer need multiple machines to get the needed level of performance.”
“Leveraging the social aspects of the Lotus software line is not a high priority. Most shops are doing traditional email and traditional client-based applications. I’d say less than 25 percent of the shops are just now getting into Web-enabling their 10-to-15-year-old Notes applications.”
In his slice of the customer base, he sees a handful using HA solutions and Domino clustering and several are looking into making use of mobile applications. The obstacle, on more than one occasion, has been mobile apps required to run on Windows servers. These are shops that are leery of bringing in more Windows servers. The preferred workaround, for now, is using mail forwarding to get information to smartphones.
There is a parallel to traditional email and traditional client-based applications. It is traditional skills.
“I see a skills vacuum for people who possess both legacy skills and modern skills,” Laing says. “There are a lot of RPG programmers with skills that should be updated, but for various reasons they aren’t going to learn modern techniques. The same can be said for a lot of Domino developers. They have been doing the same thing for 10 years, and as technology evolves, they don’t evolve as well.”
Regardless, Laing says, “In my neck of the woods there is a healthy install of Domino on iSeries. I don’t anticipate it changing by more shops migrating to the iSeries or migrating away from the iSeries.”
Rick Davis — Frisbie Memorial Hospital
In March 2001, a single Domino R5 server was deployed at this Rochester, New Hampshire, hospital. There were 51 registered users. By the time Rick Davis joined the IT staff in 2008, the user list had expanded to approximately 500, with about 350 of those using the Notes client and 150 using the browser-based iNotes. The number of users continued to grow, and today there are 258 iNotes users and 383 using the Notes client. The server is running Domino 8.5.1 and there’s an upgrade to 8.5.1 in progress for the clients. There are plans to roll out Lotus Traveler (for mobile apps) in the near future and the use of Sametime (instant messaging, voice over IP, and audio-video conferencing) is in the “under consideration” phase.
Davis is a one-man IT staff. He handles administration duties and some development chores. On some platforms it would be ridiculous to think it could be a one-person job. Davis does get some assistance.
He says contracting with a Domino hosting service has been a great help to the hospital, which was searching for a way to securely deliver information to providers “outside the network.” The hosting service was the key to secure information replication.
At the same time, the hospital has increased the number of Notes applications that electronically track and document many processes that were previously paper-based. Those applications include coverage calendars, variance reporting, HIPAA violation tracking, key and badge requests, surveys, change requests, network management and many more. Davis points out that the managers now have accurate data for planning and evaluation purposes.
A high availability system is also under way. It includes a second iSeries box and a second Domino server clustered with the existing production server. Fail over testing has been scheduled so upgrades of the OS, processors, and memory in the current production server can be accomplished while maintaining business continuity.
The only problem area that Davis revealed was an ongoing issue with the client upgrade process.
“Over the years there has been no defined install process. Or perhaps there was, but it changed every six weeks,” he says. “We’re finding components in folders and places we never anticipated. This has required a bit more ‘hands-on’ than we would have liked.”
Davis says the bond that connects Domino and the IBM i is very strong, but he stops short of saying the two will remain forever linked.
“Both Domino and most of the non-Domino medical applications run on the iSeries,” Davis says. “As we continue to grow and stress the capacity of the iSeries, the option to move Domino to another platform will always be under consideration. But for the foreseeable future, Domino will remain on the iSeries and the iSeries will remain the production server platform.”
Eric A. Jewett — McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital
In most cases where IBM i is the operating system of choice for Domino, core business applications are running on that platform. It began that way at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Ohio, but the facility is in the process of migrating its main hospital system to Linux. In the short term, that will have no impact on a decision to move Domino off the IBM i platform.
Because the hospital makes use of a multi-partitioned box, it has realized many advantages–specifically, separate partitions for email, WebSphere Portal, and a test environment for both WebSphere and Domino.
“We went from two Windows servers to a multiple LPAR for Domino,” Jewett says. “And at that same time, we moved to Domino 6.5.”
That was a bit of a rough road–the Domino upgrades of that era were notoriously ugly–and it required some help from a business partner to smooth the transition. But as Jewett says, “Once we got through that, we never looked back. We now have Sametime and Quikr running on the iSeries, and another application server as well. The only Intel Domino server in this mix is for BlackBerry (only runs on Windows). Given the choice, we probably would be running that on iSeries, too.”
In the LPAR environment, Jewett can run multiple releases of Domino, which is handy for testing new applications. The test environments include pretty much everything that’s in the production environment. And it allows regression testing while making Domino upgrades.
“Currently we have two different Domino releases,” Jewett says. But there have been times–because of add-in packages and questions of compatibility–we’ve had three releases running at one time.”
The hospital is up to date with Domino 8.5.2 for everything that’s capable of running on it.
The majority of users–the line of business staffers–have access to browser-based applications. Jewett says, “A lot of newer and more sophisticated apps have been built for browsers, but the supervisory staff still relies primarily on applications running on the Notes client especially when accessing older departmental databases. Some composites application development is also in the mix.
Jewett describes his job as being mostly focused on the admin side of things. His affinity for the platform is clear.
“The fact that Domino on the i has been tremendously stable has been a great benefit. Once it is up and running, it stays running and we have very few issues,” he says. Although he claims his development skills are a bit stale, he wants to tackle the modernization of some of the client-based apps.
“It’s not been a high priority to this point because of limited time,” is the familiar refrain Jewett evokes. “The top of the priority list is generally taking care of things that are broken as is the case when dealing with older applications. There are things that we’d like to move over to the browser and take advantage of new features. The time to work on those projects isn’t there right now.”
The lease on the hospital’s current iSeries will soon expire. Jewett says there’s no consideration given to leaving the platform.
“We will be scaling down our hardware buy because there’s a terabyte of disk space or more that is tied up in the hospital system, which is no longer needed on the i. But the platform has been very stable and the licensing model is not conducive to switching to individual Linux or Windows servers. Besides, managing that workload [on the Linux or Windows side] would not be something that I could add to my duties.”

This chapter focuses on best practices and design patterns for XPages Mobile Application Development. So even if you are familiar with building mobile applications with XPages, this chapter contains some discussion that you will find interesting. This chapter is from the book
The mobile features from the XPages Extension Library were promoted into the core XPages runtime in Domino 9.0. This reflects the importance of mobile support in application development as mobile devices (phones and tablets) move to outsell desktop systems and are becoming the norm for how people access web applications. XPages has implemented a Mobile Web Development strategy—that is, it uses web technologies to provide mobile access to your applications. Mobile devices feature powerful web browsers; however, the web interface you have built for desktop clients just won’t cut it for mobile clients. If you have ever accessed the full version of a website from a mobile device, you will have experienced first-hand the type of problems encountered when there is no mobile version of a site. These include
The XPages Extension Library book provides an introductory description of the XPages mobile controls and the pattern to be used to develop a Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD) mobile sample application. The approach this chapter takes is to focus on best practices and design patterns for XPages Mobile Application Development. So even if you are familiar with building mobile applications with XPages, this chapter contains some discussion that you will find interesting. While writing the second edition of this book, Domino 9.0.1 had just been released. It includes some important enhancements for mobile developers, which will be covered in this chapter. For an excellent description of the best practices for Mobile Web Applications, visit www.w3.org/TR/mwabp/. Some of the best practices outlined in this document are referred to later in the chapter. Be sure to download the chp14ed2.nsf file provided online for this book to run through the exercises throughout this chapter. You can access these files at www.ibmpressbooks.com/title/9780133373370.
As I write this, I’m using my home wireless network—so now I can enter the URL for this page into the Safari browser on my iPhone, and I can see the page rendered there. The User Agent string displayed isMozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 6_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWeb- Kit/536.26 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/6.0 Mobile/ 10B143 Safari/8536.25
Figure 14.1 shows how the page displays on an iPhone.
Figure 14.1 iPhone User Agent
Straight away I can see problems:
The first thing to know is that you don’t need a device to get started with Mobile Application Development. There are a number of alternative options to testing on a real device:
Most of the demonstrations in this chapter use the technique of overriding the User Agent your desktop browser sends with each request. User Agent spoofing doesn’t provide 100 percent fidelity with the actual device but is a quick way to get your application built before you begin testing on real devices. The remainder of this chapter uses the Safari and Chrome browsers to emulate Apple and Android devices, respectively.Safari Browser
The Windows versions of the Safari browser are available from the Apple support site. The WebKit engine used by the Safari for Windows browser is similar to the one on the Apple iPhone and iPad, so this browser is a good option for basic emulation of the Apple mobile devices. Use the following steps to override the User Agent string sent by the browser:
Figure 14.2 shows the Safari User Agent choices. You can now select one of these. If you access the XPage in the Safari browser, the page displays the appropriate User Agent string.
Figure 14.2 Safari User Agent choices
For example, I selected Safari iOS 4.3.3—iPhone, and the XPage displayed the following User Agent:Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/ 8J2 Safari/6533.18.5 Chrome Browser
The Chrome browser provides similar functionality as follows:
Figure 14.3 shows the Chrome developer tools Overrides tab. You can override the User Agent and also other settings like the device metrics and orientation. The device metrics and orientation and useful for giving you that immediate feedback on how your page will be rendered on the device.Firefox Browser
There is an add-on for FireFox called User Agent Switcher (addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-switcher/), which provides the equivalent functionality. One nice feature of this add-on includes the capability to define your own User Agent string.User Agent Device Detection
Given the large number of devices in use and that new devices come to the market frequently, this type of coding can become complex. The best practice for mobile applications is to use broader device classification to simplify the process of adapting your content. For example, you might want to generate different content for mobile phones versus tablet devices. In Domino 9.0.1, a new managed bean called the deviceBean has been added to the XPages runtime to simplify this process and allow you to implement a device classification strategy.Device Bean
Figure 14.4 shows the values that are displayed when accessing this page with the User Agent set to that of an iPad.
Now we have an easy to use technique to identify that a mobile or tablet device is accessing our application we can use this information to adapt the presentation of our application to a form that is suitable for the device being used. The design pattern used to present content suitable for use in mobile applications is the Single Page Application pattern and this is the topic for the next section.

A busy week for Red Hat. Of course there was the release of Red Hat Linux 7, covered in this week's distributions page. Akopia Interchange will be included with the Deluxe edition and a trial version of Computer Associates' ARCserveIT will ship with the Professional Edition.
Red Hat also announced the "Red Hat Network" subscription service at about the same time. The "Red Hat Network" is an Internet-based service which allows Red Hat to provide support and service via the Internet. The company also announced that the service also works for embedded customers.
Other companies announcing support for Red Hat Linux 7 and Red Hat Network include Computer Associates, IBM Corporation, Lotus, Novell and Tivoli.
Red Hat has put out another set of announcements. It seems that Samsung has awarded them a "million dollar contract" to port the GNUpro tools to Samsung's processors. Red Hat has also announced its "RedBoot" embedded debugging/bootstrap tool, along with the EL/IX "Level I compatibility layer" for eCos.
Red Hat also announced a couple of partnerships, this one with Interactive Objects to develop a new digital audio device, which will be based on Red Hat's eCos, and this one with Jabber.com the purports to "make it easy for developers of embedded Linux applications to add real-time messaging and XML routing to their applications."
A busy week for Lineo. Lineo has sent out an announcement for uClinux 2.4, based on the 2.4 pre-release kernel series. uClinux is a version of the kernel tweaked to work on systems that lack a memory management unit.
The company has run embedded Linux on a custom FPGA core. Open source cores are already available including the ESA LEON processor. By utilizing FPGAs, it is now possible to fully simulate both the hardware and software prior to production.
There are new partnerships with Dia Semicon Systems and Kanematsu Semiconductor Corporation, both of Japan. Lineo hopes to advance the presence of Linux-based solutions in equipment including cell phones, set top boxes, and global positioning.
They announced a deal with ACCESS Co to provides the NetFront embedded browser for Embedix.
Metrowerks, a subsidiary of Motorola, has announced its intent to invest $22.5 million in Lineo. That money will buy 3 million shares of the company.
Finally, there is a partnership with Samsung in Korea. "'We intend to leverage Lineo's technical expertise and its dedicated focus on embedded systems technology to push the frontiers of embedded device innovation', said Young Won Park, executive director of planning, Samsung Electronics."
LinuxOne is back. A company called International Mercantile Corp., which does business as Micromatix.net has announced its intention to merge with LinuxOne and adopt LinuxOne's name. However, they are getting the announcement out early, given that "the parties have not settled upon terms of the merger." LinuxOne, it seems, is a "developer of embedded Linux thin client systems" these days.
In a separate announcement Micromatix.net, LinuxOne and Concierge Inc. unveiled plans to develop a file server targeted to the B2B server market.
Concierge announced a joint venture agreement with LinuxOne "to coordinate the companies' efforts in several strategic markets." That's about as specific as it gets, however.
Also Patrick Flaherty, executive vice president of Concierge Inc., will join the board of directors of LinuxOne.
See last week's "this week in history" column for some more background on LinuxOne.
BSDi to deliver packaged BSD system. BSDi has announced its intent to distribute the new "BSD Desktop Edition," which will be available at large retailers throughout the U.S. It's based on FreeBSD 4.1, and will cost $130. Availability is in October.
BSDi is not limiting itself to software, however; the company has also announced a new 1U rackmount server product (the "iXtreme") which can be had with either BSD or Linux.
Software is bundled with hardware companies through LinuxBoxen.com. LinuxBoxen.com has put out a press release plugging its new e-commerce site. Their angle is that with just about any piece of hardware you buy you also get a custom CD with Linux driver software for that hardware and "popular Linux software titles related to the product."
Timpanogas to demonstrate M2FS on Linux at Networld+Interop. The Timpanogas Research Group has announced that it will be demonstrating its "M-Squared Clustered NetWare File System" product at the Networld + Interop conference.
NuSphere ships MySQL distribution. NuSphere has announced the availability of "NuSphere MySQL," a boxed product with the MySQL database, along with Apache, PHP, and Perl. It bills it as "the first packaged software product for the open source database market." Price is $79.
Trolltech, Opera, and PalmPalm team up in Asian wireless market. Opera Software, PalmPalm Technology Inc., and Trolltech announced the formation of a strategic alliance for the Asian wireless Linux market. The three companies will jointly develop the "Linux Total Solution for Wireless Internet Appliance" using Opera's "Opera for Linux" Web browser, Trolltech's "Qt/Embedded", integrated with PalmPalm's "Tynux", a Linux distribution optimized for the wireless Internet.
Trolltech also announced a partnership with the Korean firm MiziResearch. Mizi will help Trolltech with its Asian marketing, and will include Qt/Embedded with its "LINUETTE Linux" embedded distribution.
Sun releases Grid Engine 5.2. Sun has announced the open source release of its "Grid Engine" product - a loose clustering package oriented toward making use of idle desktop systems. It currently only runs on Solaris. It's also currently binary-only, despite the "open source" claims - the source will become available in December under "an industry-accepted open source license." More information is available on Sun's Grid Engine page.
Sun announces plans to establish accessibility lab. Sun has announced that it plans to build a laboratory aimed at developing technology for people with disabilities. They plan to use GNOME as the base of their efforts.Open Source Products Unless specified, license is unverified. Commercial Products for Linux
