they are saying decent things come to people that wait. The IBM i community has waited over 10 years for a new free up of Domino and Notes, and they were rewarded closing week when IBM announced version 10 is now attainable on IBM i.
Domino and Notes 10 is the primary principal free up of the server part of the business collaboration platform given that Domino eight.5 became released approach again in 2008 (edition 9 was a minor liberate). The future of the platform changed into up within the air for a long time, and a lot of people who have dedicated a bit of their careers to engaged on it have been in doubt no matter if IBM would continue to develop it.
At one factor in the early 2000s, the iSeries became the 2nd greatest server platform for Domino (the server part of what become the Notes-Domino platform, and which now IBM is asking the Domino and Notes Platform), trailing best home windows NT. a variety of IBM i shops ran their e-mail servers on the Notes and Domino software, primarily after IBM nixed OfficeVision/400. the primary committed AS/four hundred desktop, you are going to be aware, turned into the yellow-striped “Bumblebee” offering, which was a success enough for IBM to present further dedicated servers.
As Domino and Notes received new performance – together with social media, cell interfaces, and swift utility development capabilities – many IBM i shops stayed with it, in spite of the fact that they didn’t make the most of the brand new functions. while the numbers are surely down from their early 2000s peak, anecdotal proof says there’s still a considerable put in base of Domino on IBM i clients.
Domino’s path to redemption all started within the fall of 2017, when IBM enlisted the support of HCL technologies to co-improve Domino, Notes, and linked products, similar to Sametime, tourist, and Verse. The organizations hosted the Domino2025 Jam experience to generate hobby among loyal shoppers and solicit fresh ideas for brand new elements in a impending version 10 unencumber.
That version 10 unencumber shipped for home windows, Linux, and other mainstream OSes in 2018, bringing a number of new facets, corresponding to help for Node.js for growing new Domino/Notes apps, disposing of the should be taught Xpages, and new self-healing capabilities for clustered deployments, amongst other facets.
while the more desirable Domino group was popping champagne to have a good time the beginning of Domino and Notes 10, the IBM i crowd become left striking for a bit of. The way forward for Domino and Notes on IBM i – which traditionally has constituted a huge percentage of the Domino and Notes put in base – nonetheless turned into no longer cemented in location with a birth date.
The suspense become popped remaining week when IBM introduced that Domino 10.0.1 and tourist 10.0.1.1 on IBM i version 7.2 and seven.three became available on February 5. The information turned into welcomed by Kim Greene, who has made a career as a Domino on IBM i developer and consultant at Kim Greene Consulting.
“i'm hoping you're as excited as i'm to get this exceptional, feature wealthy, self-healing liberate attainable on the hardware platform this is most synonymous with Domino, the IBM i,” she wrote on her Domino Diva weblog ultimate week. “It’s built-in, comfy, scalable, and extremely available.”
The fact that IBM i 7.2 become supported together with IBM i 7.three changed into a particularly good piece of information, Greene wrote. “The releases supported are: 7.2, 7.3, and seven.4 (when it turns into available),” she wrote. “The massive relief is that 7.2 is supported, whew!”
there have been several IBM i-specific enhancements delivered with Domino 10.0.1, in response to Greene, including a new characteristic to simplify the administration of sunlight hours discount rates Time. With this release, Domino will default to *TIMEZONE if you happen to configure a new server, she says. prior to now, it become ordinary for administrators to misconfigure the equipment. It’s “lengthy overdue,” she writes.
an additional configuration gotcha that has been smoothed over with the brand new release has to do with changing the JVM configuration. The default JVM is the 32-bit JVM eight, however some Domino on IBM i users may additionally need to use the sixty four-bit JVM eight unlock in its place. thanks to new variables introduced to the setup, it’s now more straightforward to move between 32-bit and sixty four-bit JVMs, in line with Greene. Domino 10.0.1 will also now turns MEMCHECK on through default, that will aid when admins are debugging courses.
There are also adjustments to the default library the place the licensed application executables deploy. “With libraries having a highest size of ten characters, the nomenclature of QDOMINO8xx and QDOMINO9xx no longer works with edition 10.x,” writes Greene, who’s the major at Kim Greene Consulting. “for this reason the library constitution changes to QDOM100001 for edition 10.0.1.”
Domino 10.0.1 is purchasable in English. a gaggle 1 language pack is obtainable that brings assist for
German, Spanish, Italian, French, Brazilian Portuguese, eastern, Korean, simplified chinese language, and conventional chinese. IBM has additionally put collectively a webpage explaining what’s new in Domino 10.0.1 for IBM i.connected studies

HCL applied sciences pays IBM $1.8 billion, with the deal expected to close in mid-2019. in addition to Notes and Domino, HCL is buying a number of different commercial enterprise purposes, together with: Appscan for at ease software development, BigFix for comfortable machine management, Unica (on-premises) for advertising automation, Commerce (on-premises) for omni-channel eCommerce, Portal (on-premises) for digital event, and Connections for workstream collaboration.
"We consider the time is appropriate to divest these choose collaboration, advertising and commerce software assets, which can be more and more delivered as standalone products," John Kelly, IBM senior vice chairman, Cognitive options and research, wrote in a media advisory. " at the identical time, we consider these products are a robust strategic fit for HCL, and that HCL is well placed to force innovation and growth for his or her purchasers."
IBM has more and more been getting into cloud and artificial intelligence over the last 4 years, and has constructed up different belongings that it'll focal point on.applications
lots of the applications being offered to HCL had been at first bought with the aid of IBM from other vendors.
IBM received Lotus software, maker of Notes and Domino, in 1995 for $3.5 billion, even though the Lotus company wasn't dropped by way of IBM unless 2012.
AppScan which is now being bought to HCL, become as soon as the cornerstone of the IBM Rational software portfolio. IBM obtained the AppScan product portfolio as part of the acquisition of safety vendor Watchfire in June 2007.
BigFix turned into bought by way of IBM to become part of its Tivoli operations division in July 2010, while Unica was acquired via IBM in August 2010 for $480 million.HCL technologies
HCL technologies is based in Noida, India, and positions itself as a digital transformation enterprise. HCL and IBM had already been partnering on lots of the bought application assets.

Sean Michael Kerner is a senior editor at EnterpriseAppsToday and InternetNews.com. observe him on Twitter @TechJournalist.
IBM introduced last nighttime that it is selling the last accessories from its 1995 acquisition of Lotus to Indian firm HCL for $1.eight billion.
IBM paid $3.5 billion for Lotus again within the day. The huge items here are Lotus Notes, Domino and Portal. These had been a big part of IBM’s enterprise company for a very long time, however final 12 months large Blue began to pull away, promoting the construction half to HCL, while protecting handle of revenue and marketing.
This announcement marks the conclusion of the line for IBM involvement. With the development of the platform out of its control, and in need of cash after spending $34 billion for pink Hat, possibly IBM conveniently decided it no longer made experience to hold any part of this in-house.
As for HCL, it sees an opportunity to continue to construct the Notes/Domino company, and it’s seizing it with this buy. “The colossal-scale deployments of those products provide us with a superb opportunity to reach and serve heaps of global firms across a wide range of industries and markets,” C Vijayakumar, president and CEO at HCL technologies, noted in a press release announcing the deal.
Alan Lepofsky, an analyst at Constellation research who keeps close watch on the business collaboration area, says the sale could represent a fresh delivery for utility that IBM hasn’t basically been paying shut attention to for some time. “HCL is much more attracted to Notes/Domino than IBM has been for a decade. they are investing heavily, trying to rejuvenate the company,” Lepofsky instructed TechCrunch.
whereas this software might also believe long within the teeth, Notes and Domino are nonetheless in use in many corners of the commercial enterprise, and this is very true in EMEA (Europe, center East and Africa) and AP (Asia Pacific), Lepofsky pointed out.
He introduced that IBM looks to be absolutely exiting the collaboration space with this sale. “It appears that IBM is executed with collaboration, out of the online game,” he noted.
This movement makes feel for IBM, which is relocating in a distinct path because it develops its cloud enterprise. The crimson Hat acquisition in October, in selected, indicates that the business desires to embody deepest and hybrid cloud deployments, and older application like Lotus Notes and Domino don’t basically play a role in that world.
The deal, which is field to regulatory approval strategies, is expected to close in the middle of next yr.

Great news for IBM i shops: IBM will enable Traveler, the email and messaging server for mobile devices, to run on the IBM i operating system as part of the forthcoming Notes/Domino version 9.0 platform, the company has announced. Big Blue also said that, with the launch of Notes/Domino 9.0 Social Edition in the first quarter of 2013, it will no longer use the Lotus name, marking the end of the 20-year-old, sunny yellow brand.
IBM takes a tremendous amount of flack for its seemingly endless re-branding exercises, and at least some of it is well deserved. IBM’s marketers did botch the 2008 name change from System i to . . . whatever the platform is called today (IBM i for Power Systems isn’t a name; it’s a phrase). And Lotus Notes/Domino users still smart over the attempt to kill Lotus back in 2005 and replace it with Workplace; the name Lotus was soon back in use–until now, anyway.
But this re-branding may be smarter, and may keep the name Lotus in the grave for good. For starters, the old Lotus concept of collaboration among users has been usurped and surpassed by social media. IBM is embedding social media tools–such as the “like” button, in-line comments, easy file sharing, following “friends,” and the relentless focus on mobile devices–into the old Lotus product to take collaboration to new levels, and to keep the product relevant to millennials who expect business software to (sorta, kinda) work like Facebook.
IBM had originally planned for this next release of Notes/Domino–in private beta since the 2012 Lotusphere show last January–to be called version 8.5.4. (There still will be a version 8.5.4 release, but it won’t have any features, IBM says.) If the release number represents improvement, then the new release is, like, one one-hundredth better than the version 8.5.3 release it’s replacing. It sounds more like a service pack than something you might want to buy for your business.
But this next release brings a wealth of new capabilities, social and otherwise, that are designed to help people work together more effectively. Ed Brill, director for social business and collaboration solutions at IBM and the Notes/Domino product manager, realized it would be folly to bury it as an obscure “dot” release, so it was wisely moved up to version 9.0.
In his blog Brill writes: “A version number increment is designed to do several things: create buzz in the market; . . . convey vendor confidence in the product and its value; indicate longevity of the product; and signal the delta in new features and capabilities. Thus, it only makes sense to call a version that adds embedded experiences, a modernized user interface, new mail and calendar features, the Notes browser plug-in, SAML support, Traveler support for Windows Phone 7.5/8.0 devices and on the IBM i operating system, new XPages features, and more. . . . 9.0.”
But why stop there? Version 9.0 presented the perfect opportunity complete the transformation of Notes/Domino into an “official” IBM Software product, which has been going on for a couple of years. The user interface with Notes/Domino 9.0 Social Edition (what some call just “Social Edition”) now resembles other IBM Software products. The yellow is gone, in favor of IBM blue.
The challenge for IBM is how to use new social media tools in the context of Notes/Domino, which is used by 50,000 businesses worldwide. “How do you keep that investment in Notes/Domino relevant as you move forward to becoming a social business?” Brill asked in a November 13 webcast announcing version 9.0 “This ideal of contextual collaboration is really realized in the forthcoming version of Notes/Domino.”
IBM has gone all-in with social media with Notes/Domino version 9.0, as this release brings various social media tools to bear on the day-to-day tasks that people do within Notes/Domino. Average workers spend 25 percent of their days in their email inboxes, playing “whack-a-mole” in response to problems, Brill says.
To that end, Social Edition brings big changes to email. From their Notes and iNotes email inboxes, users can now share documents, “follow” people, “like” things, and make comments. They can drag and drop files, and approve requests from others. It looks a lot like Facebook, with a blue corporate hue. “The point is, you can see that within messaging,” said Notes and iNotes program director Scott Souder during the webcast: “We’re injecting social into messaging, and messaging right back into social.”
The other big “like” from IT Jungle with Notes/Domino 9.0 Social Edition is support for Traveler running on the IBM i operating system. Traveler is a push email program that enables users to access their email on mobile devices, including the iPhone, Android devices, Blackberry, and Windows Phone.
Previously Traveler only ran on Windows and Linux servers. That meant that any IBM i Notes/Domino customer had to run and manage a separate Windows or Linux server–or really, a pair of them to provide the required level of reliability–if they wanted to push email from their IBM i-based Domino server out to Blackberrys, iPhones, and Android phones. That is a giant hassle for anybody who has invested in Domino on the IBM i platform, which is actually a good number of people.
The announcement redeemed the work of Steve Pitcher, who spearheaded a campaign to get more native IBM i support with products in the Notes/Domino stack, particularly the newer social-enabled ones. “I’m extremely excited and grateful that IBM intends to support IBM Traveler as part of Notes and Domino 9.0,” Pitcher told IT Jungle via email. “I would imagine the rest of the IBM i and Power Systems community are as ecstatic as I am to be able to consolidate yet another workload on IBM i, further simplifying and strengthening our environments.”
Pitcher says the support for the upcoming Blackberry 10 mobile OS in Notes/Domino 9.0 will hopefully allow him to unplug two Windows servers that are used to run Blackberry Enterprise Server at Scotsburn Dairy, the Nova Scotia company where Pitcher works as a systems administrator. There is still some uncertainty in what will be supported (such as that it appears that legacy Blackberry devices will not be supported in Traveler). “Hopefully that info will be cleared up soon,” he says. “If that’s truly the case, I can personally kill two Windows servers with one stone.”
Now that Traveler is coming to IBM i, that leaves two Notes/Domino products left on Pitcher’s Christmas list for IBM i, including IBM Connections and Sametime Mobile Manager. Over the past year, Pitcher has enthusiastically thrown his energy into mobilizing the IBM i community over the lack of support for these products. Going forward, it sounds like Pitcher going to take a quieter, more tactful approach to achieve his goals.
Pitcher is not claiming credit for anything IBM has or hasn’t done. But his actions certainly seem to have helped get the point across that it would be a shame to bypass IBM i with the latest social media and Web 2.0 technologies in Notes/Domino, and for that the IBM i community should be grateful.

Before delving into the inner workings of the OSGi console, it is best to briefly explain OSGi. OSGi stands for Open Services Gateway initiative framework. This framework allows software to be written and executed as independent components. In OSGi-speak, these components are referred to as bundles. OSGi is used in a wide range of applications, from client programs such as Eclipse and IBM Lotus Notes, to mobile phones, to server applications such as IBM Lotus Domino. As a result of their modular nature, OSGi bundles can be started, stopped, and debugged on an individual basis, without the need for stopping or restarting the entire platform. Both the Domino server and the Notes client use Eclipse’s implementation of OSGi (Equinox) as their OSGi runtime platform.
OSGi was added to the Domino platform in release 8.5.2. As a result, in Domino 8.5.2, the XPages runtime was repackaged to run as OSGi bundles (instead of just a regular collection of Java JARS), also referred to as Eclipse plug-ins.
The OSGi console allows for the input of commands that the OSGi platform then performs. The platform posts the results of such commands back to the console. The OSGi platform itself has a whole host of commands that can simplify the troubleshooting of problems. The OSGi console can assist developers in developing XPages controls and applications, as well as assisting support personnel in diagnosing runtime issues. Developers who extend the XPages runtime by creating libraries will find the OSGi console commands to be a particularly powerful tool in analyzing problems. The OSGi console is of particular use when the developer/administrator needs to know whether individual plug-ins (or sets of plug-ins) are loading correctly or which version of a plug-in is in use.
As mentioned earlier, OSGi is embedded within both the Notes client and the Domino server. Depending on where your XPages application is running (whether on the client or the server), your method of accessing the OSGi console will vary. We start by explaining how to access the OSGi console on the Domino server.
OSGi is embedded within the HTTP task on the Domino server, as a result, the OSGi console is started automatically whenever the HTTP task is started. OSGi console commands are routed to the OSGi console via the HTTP task. That is, when entering an OSGi console command on the Domino server, the user must tell the HTTP task to route the specified command to the OSGi console—for example:tell http osgi <<command>>
Here, <<command>> is the name of the OSGi console command. Any OSGi command can be executed using the preceding syntax.
When it comes to OSGi commands, every developer and administrator should know several rudimentary commands. These commands can be your “go to” commands when problems arise—say, when you suspect bundle loading might be a factor. Even when you do not think that bundle loading is the problem, it is often best to first confirm that the bundle is actually loaded before proceeding with other debugging techniques.
Table 3.2 lists some of the more commonly used OSGi commands that are available to use for diagnosing plug-in issues on the Domino server (and also the Notes client). In Table 3.2, bundle-symbolic-name is referenced extensively. This is the name by which the OSGi platform references bundles. bundle-symbolic-name correlates directly to the Bundle-SymbolicName manifest header, often referred to as the plug-in name.Table 3.2. OSGi Console Commands
tell http osgi diag <bundle-symbolic-name>
Diagnoses the status of the bundle whose name is provided. Determines whether the bundle is resolved and, if not, states why the bundle is not resolved.
tell http osgi ss <bundle-symbolic-name>
Lists the status of all bundles in the system. Optionally, a symbolic name or a symbolic name prefix can be provided to obtain the status of a particular bundle or a subset of bundles.
tell http osgi start <bundle-symbolic-name>
Starts the bundle with the specified symbolic name.
tell http osgi stop <bundle-symbolic-name>
Stops the bundle with the specified symbolic name.
tell http osgi b <bundle-symbolic-name>
Prints metadata relating to the specified bundle.
tell http osgi headers <bundle-symbolic-name>
Lists the OSGi headers for the specified bundle.
tell http osgi help
Lists all the OSGi command available on the server, along with some text describing each command.
All the commands listed in Table 3.2 can be entered via the Domino server console, with the results of such commands being printed back to the console, as illustrated in Figure 3.4.
Figure 3.4. Running an OSGi command on the Domino Server Console
All the commands referenced in Table 3.2 can alternatively take the bundle id as a parameter (instead of the bundle-symbolic-name). The bundle id is a numeric ID that the OSGi runtime assigns to the bundle during platform initialization. The ID might vary from instance to instance of the platform, but users might find it easier to input than having to enter the entire bundle symbolic name. Examples of how to determine and use the bundle id are given later in this chapter.
Rarely does a single OSGi console command answer all the questions on why a plug-in is not loading or operating as expected. The following sections explain in greater detail how you can use each of these commands and the results you can expect to see from executing such commands.diag <bundle-symbolic-name>
This is one of the most valuable commands in your arsenal and will likely be the one you’ll use most frequently when diagnosing issues. You can use this command to determine whether a bundle is resolved within the OSGi platform. The status returned by this command will be one of the following:
If No unresolved constraints is the returned status, it suggests that the system has recognized the bundle and that all dependencies of the bundle are satisfied. When an Unresolved constraint status is returned, it suggests that one or more bundles or packages that the bundle requires are missing or cannot be loaded. It is worth noting here that a bundle might still fail to start even though the OSGi console reports that the bundle has been resolved. If a bundle fails to start and is resolved, some code in the bundle’s activator likely is failing (throwing an exception).
Sample usage:tell http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.core
Listing 3.8 shows the typical output of running the diag command against the com.ibm.xsp.core plug-in.Listing 3.8. Result of Running the diag Command Against a Specific Bundle—Successful Case > tell http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.core 10/17/2011 09:43:14 PM initial@reference:file:../../shared/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp. core_126.96.36.19910629-1645/ 10/17/2011 09:43:14 PM No unresolved constraints.
In this case, the diag command reports that there were No unresolved constraints against the entered bundle symbolic name—in other words, the system recognizes the given bundle. Upon closer examination, the user can obtain further information about the bundle in question. It can determine where the bundle being used by the platform is installed, and the platform-assigned bundle id can also be obtained.
From reading the console output, the user can see that the bundle is installed to ../../shared/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp.core_188.8.131.5210629-1645. The location specified is relative to the osgi/rcp/eclipse directory, which is a child of the Domino program directory. In this case, the console output indicates that the plug-in is installed at: <domino program directory>/osgi/shared/eclipse/plugins.
Finally, the output states the platform-assigned bundle id for the specified bundle. 119 is the id assigned to this bundle in this example. As stated previously, the OSGi commands listed here can use the bundle id interchangeably. In this example, executing the following command has identical output to that in Listing 3.8.
Sample usage:tell http osgi diag 119
Listing 3.9 shows sample output of running the diag command in an unsuccessful scenario.Listing 3.9. Result of Running the diag Command Against a Specific Bundle—Error Case > tell http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM update@../../../data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/com. ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt_184.108.40.206108111413.jar 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM Direct constraints which are unresolved: 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM Missing host com.ibm.xsp.extlib_0.0.0.
In Listing 3.9, you can see that the OSGi platform reports that the bundle in question is not resolved as a result of a missing dependency. We can see from the console output that the OSGi platform has actually found the bundle that we are looking for (com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt), but as one of the bundles that com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt depends on is not resolved, the com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt bundle does not get resolved itself. Looking a little more closely at the console output, we can determine the following:
The bundle com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt is installed at ../../../data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt_220.127.116.11108111413.jar. We now know that this path is relative to the <domino program directory>/osgi/rcp/eclipse directory. Hence, we can deduce that com.ibm.extlib.sbt is installed at the <domino program directory>/data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/ directory.
The OSGi platform–assigned bundle id for this bundle is 116.
One other tidbit of information can be extracted from the console output, in this case. The final line of the output tells us that the host is missing:Missing host com.ibm.xsp.extlib_0.0.0
This tells us that the bundle we are looking for (com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt) is, in fact, a plug-in fragment, and the unresolved constraint (com.ibm.xsp.extlib) is the host plug-in.ss, ss <bundle-symbolic-name>, or ss <bundle-name-prefix>
Similar to the diag command, this command quickly determines the status of a particular bundle—or all the bundles installed in the platform. Users can optionally specify a bundle name or a bundle name prefix to get the status of specific bundles. The returned status shows the bundle id, state, and bundle name of all bundles. In many situations, this command is just as useful as the diag command because it also reports the status of a bundle. This command does not tell the user why a particular bundle is not loading, but it does tell the user the state of a bundle.
Sample usage:tell http osgi ss
Listing 3.10 shows the result of running the ss command without any parameters.Listing 3.10. Listing 3.10 lists a subset of the information that displays when this command is run in a normal server environment. However, the listing does show all the information needed to understand the output of the command.
The command outputs several important pieces of information about each bundle:

Similar to Listing 3.10, Listing 3.11 shows the results of executing the ss command, only this time the command is passed a bundle symbolic name as a parameter. The ss command finds all bundles on the system that either start with the parameter or have a bundle symbolic name that is the same as the parameter. Listing 3.11 lists all the bundles, along with their bundle id and state.
Table 3.3 lists all the possible states of an OSGi bundle.Table 3.3. OSGi Bundle States
The bundle is uninstalled and is unusable.
The bundle has been installed, but the platform has not yet resolved it.
The bundle has been resolved and is in a position to be started.Note that it is still possible for the bundle to fail to start, even though it has been resolved by the environment.
Similar to RESOLVED, the platform has resolved the bundle and is in a position to be started. The bundle is not yet ACTIVE because it has been configured (via its bundle manifest) to be initialized lazily–that is, only when another ACTIVE bundle references the bundle will it be activated.
The bundle is in the process of starting. Either another bundle has specifically caused the bundle to start (by referring to a class within the bundle) or the user has manually started the bundle via the console. Rarely is a bundle in this state because it is transient.
The bundle is in the process of shutting down. Similar to STARTING, a bundle rarely is in this state.
The bundle is running within the OSGi platform.
Developers and administrators should be aware that, on the Domino server, the state of a bundle is not persisted from one session to the next—that is, after the HTTP task is restarted, any bundles that were started manually in the previous session must be started again. Luckily, the ss command has an argument for filtering all bundles in a given state. The ss command can filter the bundles based on their state, by appending -s [state] to the command syntax.
Sample usage:tell http osgi ss -s active
Figure 3.5 shows the output of running the ss command with the -s active argument.
Figure 3.5. Result of running the ss command in the Domino server consolestart <bundle-symbolic-name>
This command requests that the platform manually start the specified bundle. Calling this command does not guarantee that the specified bundle will be started. An exception can still occur during bundle initialization that would cause the bundle initialization to fail. Performing an ss command after the start command reports the status of the bundle. This command is helpful when a new bundle has been installed on the server, but the administrator or developer is not in a position to restart the HTTP task to start the new bundle.
Sample usage:tell http osgi start com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt
Figure 3.6 shows that, by running a combination of the ss and start commands, a bundle can be started and its state can be verified.
Figure 3.6. Result of running the start and ss commands in the consolestop <bundle-symbolic-name>
This command tells the platform to stop the specified bundle. Users should be careful when calling this on a production environment. In some cases, it might not be possible for the platform to stop the bundle. If this is the case, the reason will be printed to the console.
Sample usage:tell http osgi stop com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt
Figure 3.7 shows how running a combination of the ss and stop command stops a bundle and verifies its state.
Figure 3.7. Result of running the start and ss commands in the consoleb <bundle-symbolic-name>
This command prints all metadata relating to the specified bundle. The metadata includes imported packages, required bundles, exported packages, bundle location, and so on. This command is useful when the developer needs to quickly verify that the bundle loaded by the platform has the meta information that the developer believes it has.
Sample usage:tell http osgi b com.ibm.xsp.extlib
Listing 3.12 shows a subset of the output from running the b command against a specified bundle.Listing 3.12. This command causes the OSGi header information for the specified bundle to be printed to the console. This command is convenient for checking information such as the packages that a specific bundle exports or the bundles that the specified bundle depends upon. All the information stored in the bundle’s manifest.mf file is printed to the console.

At Lotusphere, Lotus announced a road map through 2007 that emphasizes the integration of Domino and WebSphere-based services. At the heart of the plan is a strong commitment to a Workplace client technology and WebSphere Portal, which should open debates in every organization about the future of client and portal strategies.
META Trend: Throughout 2004, organizational productivity strategies will drive the integration of knowledge and human capital management efforts into a holistic program to improve workplace performance and innovation (WPI). Focusing on the connections of people to teams, communities, process, and information in evolving workplaces will become a vital discipline for adaptive organizations by 2005. Knowledge management methods and practices will become critical for blending business processes and social networks to maximize enterprise productivity and drive competitive advantage through 2008.
After years of conflicting messages about the relationship between Domino and WebSphere-based content and collaboration services, IBM has settled on a clear and coherent strategy for the long-term evolution of the two platforms. Domino will be a participating server in the IBM Workplace strategy, supplying content and applications within the Workplace environment. The intention is to have common authentication, LDAP directory services, backup, and hygiene services across Domino and WebSphere-based servers. The goal is to evolve Domino customers to Workplace at their own pace, where Domino applications increasingly become integrated with Workplace services, and new development and collaboration services are hosted on WebSphere platforms. However, IBM’s goal is to entice Workplace customers to adopt the entire WebSphere Portal (WP) Server platform. To this end, IBM announced a bundle of all Workplace modules, plus the WebSphere Portal Server Enable edition for $400/seat, which will drop to less than $200/seat in large-volume deals. With the purchase of WP licenses, firms will have access to the entire portal framework to create custom applications and have the use of extensive portlet and middleware libraries that come bundled with WP. The IBM On Demand Workplace strategy espouses an industry-specific, role-based work environment, where the enterprise portal extends to employees, customers, partners, and suppliers. Central to IBM’s value proposition are WebSphere Portal, Lotus Workplace, and IBM Global Services offerings. IBM views WP as the focal point for capturing a considerable part of organizations’ knowledge worker (KW) infrastructure, putting the onus on firms to plan long-term KW strategies prior to committing to the IBM Workplace strategy.
The most important news coming out of Lotusphere was the planned rich-client technology for Workplace and WP. The Workplace client code will be based on open source components emerging from the Eclipse project, which started its life as an integrated development environment platform, and has since been devoted to developing a rich-client platform. Eclipse clients will incorporate the Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi), which enables the loading/unloading of service agents without the need to restart the client, creating a flexible and dynamic environment. Lotus has contributed multiple components to the client effort (e.g., system-tray integration, generalized status bar, workbench themes, multiview instancing). To this base of open source components, IBM will add Workplace-specific extensions such as component provisioning, data replication (based on SyncML), Web Services for Remote Portals (WSRP) consumers, and a J2EE client container. IBM will use the Informix-heritage Cloudscape database as the offline repository for Workplace content. By supporting the Eclipse rich-client project, IBM hopes to deliver a “smart client” framework that alleviates many desktop management concerns (e.g., configuration, patch), as client-side components are cached and managed in a stateless manner (functionality that Microsoft will not deliver until Longhorn 2006+). Workplace clients will support the native user interface model of any platform it runs on (e.g., Windows XP Linux, Longhorn), promising more options for clients in terms of their end-user platform strategies, smart clients, and operational management. IBM intends to push automatic provisioning, update, and maintenance to broaden corporate appeal of the Workplace client. IBM will use Workplace as a poster child for Eclipse-sourced clients, and will attempt to build industry support (via ISVs), positioning it as a “portal on the desktop.” We expect IBM to add pluggable productivity tools (e.g., editors) and connectors to Microsoft Office. The first use of the Workplace client technology will be in Workplace Messaging 2.0 (3Q04), for which it will provide offline e-mail support as well as enhanced security and S/MIME encryption. Replication of the Cloudscape store will be via SyncML. In addition, the client technology will be coupled with a Workplace document management package, which will use a pluggable editor to enable users to import, edit, and save documents. With Domino 8.0, the Workplace client will use Notes client plug-in components to enable Domino applications to be run in a Workplace client. IBM also revealed short- and long-term changes to Domino. Such changes underscore that the primary development strategy IBM is following with Domino is to add capabilities that will smooth integration with the WebSphere strategy at the expense of any groundbreaking functionality improvements to the core Domino platform. IBM will strive to create operational efficiencies for Domino via scalability and management improvements and make some application refinements (e.g., presence-enabling Notes, embedded instant messaging).
Domino 6.51. Released in January 2004, Domino 6.51 includes instant messaging at no additional cost (for those on a maintenance plan), reflecting IBM’s desire to build a large installed base of IM customers to both block Microsoft’s attempts to penetrate Domino accounts with its own Live Communication Server, and to demonstrate the value of embedded presence and IM. Lotus already set the stage for IM integration with Version 6.5, which automatically launches IM in the Notes client and displays presence information on names exposed in the Domino directory. Decision makers should examine the pros and the cons of using the Notes client as the only method for users to obtain IM services. Sametime Connect (a separate IM client) retains some functionality not found within the embedded tool, and users may appreciate a loosely coupled IM model, rather than having IM available only within the Notes application. Domino 6.51 also includes better Outlook integration with the Domino server, a service that Lotus has struggled with over the years. With virtually no uptake in the market, Lotus continues to view an opportunity to maintain Domino e-mail servers in place by enabling the use of the popular Microsoft e-mail client. Functionality dropout (e.g., free and busy calendar lookup) and sluggish performance had been barriers to adoption. Domino 6.51 also contains some scalability and performance enhancements on the server side as well as administration enhancements. As a major step forward in its effort to integrate Domino with Workplace, Lotus introduced Domino Web Application Portlet (DWAP), which enables Web-based Domino applications or data to be deployed as JSR-168 and WSRP portlets for consumption in a compliant portal framework such as WebSphere Portal. Using Domino Designer, developers will take existing Domino applications, convert them to Web applications, and then configure them for DWAP support.
Domino 7.0. Version 7.0 of Domino is scheduled for a 1H05 release. It will offer optional native implementation of DB2 (substituting for .NSF), as well as external access to DB2 in a three-tier architecture model. Although IBM is touting Web service support for this release, it will still require developers to manually add Web service support for applications. We suspect that Web service support for Domino has now been largely bypassed in support of the DWAP portlet architecture. Domino Version 7.0 also promises a much-needed 50% boost in per-server Domino Web Access scalability. Domino 7.0 also promises some administration enhancements, including domainwide views and better agent and application administration. Native Java debugging, better smart-upgrade features, and client-lockdown facilities are part of this release. In this version, Domino Designer has the ability to blend collaboration services (e.g., IM, Web conferencing) into Domino access and expose .NSF data to DB2 via DB2 Access Views. IBM will also release a common mail portlet, which will provide a consistent user experience against both the Domino and the Workplace Messaging back ends.
Domino 8.0. Lotus has disclosed little about this release, which is expected in 1H06, but the main attraction will be the release of the integrated Workplace/Notes client previously referenced. We also expect integration between various Workplace and Domino components such as calendaring (via ICAL) for base-level interoperability and IM (via a SIP to VP gateway). All firms must ascertain the appropriate path forward with an integrated KW strategy. For Domino shops, decisions must be made about commitments to Domino, Domino and Workplace components, or Domino and a full-blown commitment to the WebSphere Portal strategy. Decisions will hinge on infrastructure plans (e.g., directory, database), application development directions, application portfolios (e.g., SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle), and content management and portal plans.
Bottom Line: Domino organizations should begin ascertaining Domino upgrade/migration strategies, choosing between full WebSphere portal support, Domino-only, or Domino and Workplace integration. Upgrade/migration strategies must be part of overall knowledge worker infrastructure plans.
Business Impact: Closely aligning content and collaboration strategies with corporate infrastructure strategies will yield operational and functional efficiencies, leading to competitive advantages.
