The energy systems enterprise continues to develop, and that is decent news for all IBM i shops, exceptionally for those of us who actively desire for there to be boisterous competitors in server processors and methods structure. It comes as no surprise that we consider massive Blue still has plenty to present when it involves engineering methods that give actual differentiation in the market. the continued increase of energy programs – preserving the happiness of the significant IBM i and AIX consumer bases and increasing the Linux base – is what is required for IBM to proceed to make the heavy investments in processor and equipment design that it has accomplished seeing that launching the vigour architecture again in February 1990.
IBM has finished a bit of rejiggering in its monetary reporting segments as it prepares to absorb open supply software massive crimson Hat, which it provided to acquire for $34 billion final fall, into its organization sometime in the 2d half of this year. This rejiggering became additionally carried out as IBM is making ready to promote the Domino collaboration utility and a number of on premises advertising functions to HCL, sells off its ultimate advertising and marketing purposes to Centerbridge, and has simply achieved selling off its Seterus loan servicing company to Cooper group. in the first quarter, these corporations represented around $417 million in revenues, so this time next yr, when those groups are long past, the Q1 2019 numbers can be that plenty lessen when checked out from a continuing operations perspective.
The decent news is that purple Hat is a $3 billion (annual) utility company growing to be at 25 percent or so, and its numbers will snap in and greater than make up the difference. As part of the reporting section rejiggering, IBM merged its cloud application and so-referred to as cognitive application into one neighborhood – cognitive capacity database, analytics, and transaction processing structures – and also merged its safety services with its security utility. The latter makes good feel. I feel it's a stretch to name databases, transaction monitors, quite a few middleware, and such “cognitive” however IBM has to are attempting to shape some form of rejuvenation story that Wall street will purchase – as do all IT vendors that have been round for so long as large Blue has been.
in the first quarter resulted in March, IBM’s complete revenues were $18.18 billion, down four.7 p.c, and the company posted web profits of $1.fifty nine billion, down 5.2 p.c. IBM is generating a whole lot of money, however nothing like a hyperscaler does, and entire the quarter with $18.14 billion in cash and securities, roughly equivalent to that first quarter of profits. IBM is building up its battle chest to pay for that red Hat deal, and is selling those application units above to lift funds to pay off pink Hat shareholders, who have given the acquisition the eco-friendly mild. (Regulators in the united states, Europe, and China have yet to weigh in, however they are going to.)
IBM’s systems community, which peddles gadget z and vigor techniques servers in addition to storage arrays and software and working systems for these contraptions, had sales of $1.33 billion to reseller companions and conclusion users, down eleven.5 %, with another $163 million offered to different IBM businesses and divisions, up 6.5 percent yr on 12 months. complete systems earnings came to $1.49 billion, down 9.8 p.c. We estimate that inside these figures, IBM offered about $907 million in systems hardware (including up server and storage hardware) externally, down sixteen p.c, and working equipment earnings got here in at $428 million, down 2 p.c. We reckon that gross profits for all of methods group have been round $628 million, but due to ongoing investments, pricing power in the server market in generic, larger element costs, an destructive mix of gadget z mainframe revenue, and funding in future system z15 and Power10 processors, IBM booked a pretax loss of $202 million in the standard systems enterprise. That’s really the same level of pre-tax loss IBM had within the 12 months-in the past length. the primary quarter is all the time a nasty one for IBM’s profitability in techniques, so here's nothing new, and over the course of a full year, large Blue makes cash.
Jim Kavanaugh, IBM’s chief economic officer, said on a name with Wall street analysts ultimate week that the amazing U.S. dollar has as soon as once more supplied a headwind that diminishes the impact of foreign places sales as offers in euro, ponds, yen, renminbi, and other currencies convert into fewer U.S. dollars than they'd have a 12 months in the past. For IBM ordinary, if you measured its boom at regular forex, it is simply down 0.9 %, compared to the four.7 % decline as suggested. For the mainframe, the as GAAP profits as mentioned was down 39 percent within the quarter, and virtually the same at down 38 % at steady forex, whereas for power programs the as-mentioned earnings have been up 6 p.c but had been up 9 percent at steady foreign money. IBM’s storage revenue within techniques group fell eleven p.c at constant currency however 13 % as pronounced. operating programs revenues, which comprises perpetual licenses for IBM i, AIX, and Linux but a much bigger chunk that is for month-to-month licenses for the equipment z application stack, rose by using 2 % as suggested however increased by using 5 % at constant foreign money.
As we remind you once in a while, the element to accept as true with for IBM as an entire is barely how huge its true programs company is, if you happen to add in all the application, technical aid, consulting, outsourcing, and financing that the enterprise does for its gadget z and energy methods traces. We take a stab at estimating this each quarter, and this time around, in Q1 2019, we reckon that this actual techniques enterprise had revenue of $5.ninety five billion, up four.7 percent, and that its gross profits have been around $three.forty two billion, up 12.6 p.c. (None of this contains IBM’s public cloud revenues, which we could argue belong in here, or its database or application utility, which you might add on.)
this way of looking at issues makes IBM seem as effective in programs as it definitely is, as antagonistic to so-Nineteen Nineties-meets-the-2010s approach that IBM talks about itself. To be reasonable, IBM can best focus on itself in a method that it's measuring itself, and readability has now not constantly been the exact purpose of fiscal reporting. just ample readability to preserve investors and regulators satisfied is the precise aim because too plenty tips may cause more complications for a publicly traded business than no longer satisfactory. In any event, this precise programs enterprise groundwork represents about a 3rd of the company’s revenues and about forty percent of its gross gains, counting on the quarter.
That brings us to energy techniques, the iron upon which IBM i runs. here's the sixth consecutive quarter that the energy systems company line grew, and the push of Linux on power is paying off, exceptionally within the HPC house. SAP HANA in-reminiscence processing, and a number of styles of statistics analytics, mainly the form that makes use of machine researching with GPU acceleration to deliver the practicing for neural networks. The Power9 upgrade cycle for valued clientele working big workloads on Oracle 11g and 12c in addition to IBM Db2 databases is also assisting, specifically on the high end of the vigor line. “both the excessive end and entry degree choices posted amazing growth this quarter as consumers proceed to adopt this new technology,” Kavanaugh said in reference to income of power-based iron.
but vigour-primarily based storage revenue, like the excessive conclusion DS8800 disk arrays, took it on the chin just a little in Q1 2019, and that became due to the downdraft in the mainframe market, which is due in the main to the fact that the gadget z14 is within the seventh quarter of its lifestyles. it might appear that IBM needs a new generation of mainframes (presumably the equipment z15), however that doubtless received’t ensue except 2021 or so, when the Power10 chips are additionally expected to be put into as a minimum two exascale-classification supercomputers and also be spread throughout the greater typical vigour techniques line.
in line with our profits model for vigor server sales and storage revenue according to vigor iron (like the DS collection), right here is how we believe the quarter mapped out compared to those because the great Recession began in 2009:
the first quarters for 2017, 2018, and 2019 have been trending upwards, despite the fact a little, and would have regarded even more suitable had storage hardware revenue not taken a 13 percent dive. just so you don’t should squint your eyes there, we suppose that IBM had $302 million in power techniques earnings – once again, together with servers in accordance with power processors as well as a component of the storage array hardware earnings that come from issues just like the DS series – up 3.eight percent. This does not have in mind sales of operating programs for vigour iron or income of energy equipment to IBM’s outsourcing purchasers. That could have added notably to the earnings circulation from energy, but we don't have any way of guessing how a whole lot that may be. We lately went out on a limb to are attempting to reckon these numbers for all of 2018, and that is about as far as we believe comfy doing.connected reviews

Tenable Network Security recently added support for the IBM i OS with Nessus Scanner, a tool that analyzes server and network systems for security holes and lax configuration settings. The new plug-ins will enable IBM i shops to do one of two things: discover shortcomings in their security configurations, or document their adherence to IBM‘s security standards for the purpose of regulatory compliance.
Tenable claims that Nessus is the world’s most widely deployed vulnerability and configuration assessment product, and that it has become the de facto standard tool in its class among security professionals, network penetration testing teams, and auditors. While such claims may be difficult to prove, there’s no doubt that Nessus has been widely deployed, and, with 50,000 checks performed via plug-ins, that it casts a very wide net.
The addition of IBM i support makes that net just a little wider. “We had a lot of customers and prospects who have iSeries and need to cover that with assessments,” says Dale Gardner, product marketing manager for Tenable. “We’re all about being comprehensive.”
Gardner says Tenable has developed half-a-dozen IBM i plug-ins that examine 40 security attributes on the servers, including security level, audit level, and various password settings. Nessus follows IBM recommendations on security configuration settings, and any detected discrepancies, insecure configurations, or policy violations automatically trigger administrator alerts.
The Nessus Scanner can now detect vulnerabilities and poor security configurations in the IBM i platform.
Regulatory compliance, specifically the Payment Cardholder Industry (PCI) security standards, is driving the need for the additional rigmarole and automated configuration assessments. “A lot of people have their iSeries locked down pretty well, but they have to prove it,” Gardner says.
Tenable sells several other security tools, including the Passive Vulnerability Scanner (PVS), which continuously monitors IP addresses for traffic that’s out of place, and the Log Correlation Engine (LTE), which pulls information from multiple sources, including Nessus, PVS, and Syslog entries from network devices, to do vulnerability and attack correlation.
There is also Security Center, a visualization tool that allows users to build dashboards and reports based on information in Nessus, PVS, and LTE. Getting security-related information from a wide variety of data sources increases the chances of preventing a security incident, at worst, or even just failing a security audit.
Tenable also funds its own security research department that looks out for the latest vulnerabilities, Internet threats, and compliance standards. This security research is used to continually update Nessus and other products to allow them to detect the latest threats. Gardner says it’s possible that there will be some research put into IBM i vulnerability discovery.
Tenable was founded 10 years ago, and has its headquarters in Columbia, Maryland. One of its co-founders is Ron Gula, its current CEO and CTO. According to the bio on the Tenable website, Gula started his information security career at the National Security Agency (NSA) conducting penetration tests of government networks and performing advanced vulnerability research. The other co-founders are Renaud Deraison, the original developer of Nessus and currently Tenable’s chief research officer (CRO); and Jack Huffard, who heads up business development, sales, and marketing as Tenable’s president and COO.
Nessus 5.0 is available now. Downloads are free, and businesses are charged $1,200 per year for the update feed. For more information and downloads, see the vendor’s website at www.tenable.com

Mission Critical Twenty years ago open systems was the battle cry that shook the absurdly profitable proprietary mainframe and minicomputer markets.
The proliferation of powerful and less costly x64-based systems that can run Solaris, Linux or Windows is making more than a few Unix shops think the unthinkable: migrating away from Unix for their mission-critical workloads.
The dot-com crash was the last hoorah for Unix systems. Unix machines accounted for nearly half of worldwide server revenues, shipments ran at about 75,000 units per quarter and revenues were about $2.5bn per quarter.Hit for six
Shipments and revenues took a hit in the recession that ran from 2001 through 2003, and Unix also vendors suffered in the slump of 2008-9.
Unix now represents about 20 per cent of worldwide server sales. In the first quarter of 2011, according to statistics from Gartner, Risc/Itanium server sales where Unix is the primary operating system started heading back towards 50,000 units and revenues hit $2.6bn. The Unix market has rebounded to where it was after the dot-com crash.
Meanwhile, the Windows and Linux markets have surged, driving about two and a half times as much revenue and accounting for the bulk of the two million or so servers that get shipped in a quarter.
And even as Unix has recovered, the market is adopting Windows and Linux at a feverish pace, predominantly on Xeon and Opteron server platforms.
The same economic and technical pressure that Unix put on proprietary systems is not letting up on Itanium and Risc servers. Organisations look at their data centres and see the big cheques going out to IBM, Oracle and HP, the three remaining commercial Unix suppliers, and start asking a lot of questions about the alternatives.
At the start of the Unix revolution, the processors and system components in Unix machines were leaps and bounds ahead of what x86 server makers could deliver in terms of capacity and reliability. A Unix system was a safe bet.
So safe, in fact, that when the dotcom bubble started to inflate in the late 1990s a Sun Microsystems Sparc server and an Oracle database were the default platforms for Web 1.0 startups – a fact that made Sun and Oracle stinking rich and IBM and HP envious.
HP may have moved from PA-Risc processors to Itanium chips from Intel, but Integrity machines are still seen as more expensive than x64-based alternatives running the same workloads. Itanium is, for all economic purposes, no better (or worse) than a Risc processor.
The pace of change for Risc and Itanium processors has slowed a little in the past decade and enhancements have been coming to x64 processors from Intel and AMD. The x64 processors have grown up, with 64-bit memory addressing and a slew of reliability features that previously were part of only mainframe or Risc/Itanium systems.
The expanded set of machine check architecture features with the Westmere-EX Xeon E7 processors announced in April are an example of such RAS enhancements.Salute the kernel
Perhaps more importantly, Windows and Linux, the operating systems favored on x64 platforms in the data centre, have also improved greatly over the past decade in terms of reliability and scalability.
The kernels have been tweaked to support SMP and Numa scaling, and have real-time options for applications where low-latency is the primary desirable characteristic (think hedge fund trading systems).
These latest Windows and Linux platforms also sport virtualisation hypervisors that can stand toe-to-toe with virtualisation technologies created more than a decade ago for Unix systems.
The evolution of x64 hardware and the continuing improvements in Windows and Linux mean Unix shops can contemplate moving off their Risc/Itanium iron. But the higher prices for hardware, software and support on Unix platforms is what actually makes a certain percentage of them actually go through the process.Quick calculator
Over the past two decades, I have developed a rule of thumb for the back-office, transaction processing workloads that mainframes, proprietary minicomputer and Unix machines have tended to run.
Here's the rule: for any given workload, if a Windows or Linux stack running on an x64 server costs a certain amount, then to drive the same workload on a Risc/Itanium Unix machine will cost roughly twice as much, and a proprietary mid-range or mainframe box with the same capacity will cost twice as much as the Unix alternative.
The relative prices depend on workloads: mainframes do better on batch serial workloads for which they have been tuned, and that is why they drive about $4bn in revenues today.
And Risc/Itanium machines have offered memory, CPU and I/O bandwidth that was not available in x64-based systems, and that is why they continue to drive another $15bn in revenues worldwide.
Not only is the hardware more expensive per unit of capacity, but so is the software. Take Oracle's processor core factoring scheme for its database and middleware software, for example. If you go with per-processor core pricing, you count up the cores and then multiply by a scaling factor to come up with the price.
On Oracle's own Sparc T3 processors, the scaling factor is 0.25 per core, which means you get a software licence at a quarter of list price; software support for databases and middleware is 20 per cent of that price per year on top of that.
The Sparc Ts have lots of fairly wimpy cores and Oracle is trying to compensate for that. On Sparc64-VI and Sparc64-VII processors and early IBM Power and HP PA-Risc chips, the scaling factor is 0.75 per core, so you get a bit of a price break, and on the new Sparc64-VII+ processors from Fujitsu and Oracle the scaling is 0.5 per core, the same as for Xeon and Opteron processors.
But if you want to use an IBM Power6 or Power7 chip, a System z mainframe or an Intel Itanium 9300 chip, you pay full price per core.
If you think it should cost the same to run Oracle software on any machine, you are not alone. But IBM would not agree with you.Risc assessment
IBM has its own processor value unit software pricing scheme which is used for on-premise machines as well as for Amazon's EC2 and IBM's own SmartCloud clouds.
IBM's pricing scheme gives 50 per cent price break on Opteron and early Xeon processors, and a 30 per cent price break on newer Xeon 5600 and 7500 processors.
However, the fatter Xeon 7500 and E7 processors are priced the same as IBM's own Power6 and Power7 processors, as well as Oracle/Fujitsu UltraSparc and Sparc64 processors and Intel's Itanium chips.
Why do mainframe and Unix vendors charge more for their systems? Because they can
And in many cases, Power6, Power7 and Xeon 7500 and E7 processors have software costing the same per core as IBM's System z machines, which is 20 per cent over the standard price.
Why do mainframe and Unix vendors charge more for their systems? Because they can. Companies that have coded a trillion line of mainframe code are not about to save a few million or even tens of millions of dollars on a migration to Unix, Windows or Linux systems and incur billions of dollars of risk.
Organisations that have Unix skills are similarly unwilling to move to a new server architecture and operating system at the same time (although if they are using packaged software and migrating to a new version, this kind of transition can be done less painfully than actually porting home-grown applications from a Unix box to a Windows or Linux system).Staying power
The other factor that helps Unix systems persist in the data centre is the competition from the big three system vendors – IBM, Oracle and HP – and between the two big database and middleware providers, Oracle and IBM.
Those comparisons outlined above are vendor list prices and where two or more vendors are brought in to compete, they can drop significantly. Sometimes a discounted Unix system can come down to the same price as an x64-based system of equivalent performance and capacity.
An x64-vendor pushing Windows or Linux alternatives has to push even lower to win the deal, and there just isn't as much room for price cutting. The competition in the Unix space makes it a healthier market, much as the mainframe racket was when Amdahl and Hitachi were grinding away at Big Blue in the 80s and early 90s.
The secret is to get a collection of Intel, AMD, Oracle, IBM and HP coffee cups and make sure vendors see that theirs is missing when they come a-calling.
And the most important thing is to move your workloads off Unix systems only when, and if, it makes sense for your company, not for the vendor pushing x64 alternatives.
It is always easier to start software projects on a new platform than to try to move an older system to a new platform. If you want to save money and grief, this is probably the best way to do it.
The easiest thing to do, however, is compute on the platforms you know how to run best. More than any sticker on a shiny new server, that will determine your real costs over the long haul. ®

No more pencils. No more books. No more teachers’ dirty looks. Why so modest? Why not just get rid of teachers altogether? It is seldom presented so bluntly, but that’s the general thinking of a fledgling movement called Minimally Invasive Education, which prefers technology to teachers. As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. Given what educators are grappling with these days, the prospect of escaping the classroom may seem like a blessing.
We have been tossing educators into the fray for several thousand years with tolerable results. But the world is changing faster than the president’s commitment to Social Security and the old model is no longer working–for anybody.
Why silicon-based rather than carbon-based education?
In retrospect, the die was probably cast when Socrates was executed for corrupting the minds of Athenian youth. He was undoubtedly not the first to be punished for questioning orthodoxy, but at least his students weren’t chucking spears at him. These days, everywhere we look, teachers are under attack–by their students as well as their employers. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 127,120 teachers in the K-12 arena were physically attacked at school during the 2007-2008 school year. Another 222,460 were threatened.
When they are not actually getting assaulted in some way by psychotic teenagers, their pay is being linked to mandatory testing, their unions are being assailed, and they are savaged by politicians, accused of budget-busting greed for the great unpardonable sin of having a pension.
Beyond the threat of violence, the push for austerity, coupled with a punishing economy, combined to erode educational effectiveness. On the one hand, teachers are mandated to do more with less. On the other, the stress of parents pushed into crisis by joblessness and an economy sucked dry by deregulation, filters down to their children. A mind under constant stress relies on the reptilian brain for fight, flight, or freeze responses. When a threat is perceived, the reasoning parts of the brain are essentially shut down in order to respond to the immediate danger. It’s probable that children under the pressures of poverty or violence or family disintegration respond to testing as just another threat. And poor performance ratchets up the pressure, which only amps up the threat and manifests in a further lack of resourcefulness. The traditional teaching model is producing a lot of students who just want to escape.
Small wonder that in the past decade, diagnoses of ADHD increased by 41 percent. Are children less focused, are teachers more boring? Who knows? But when you have to drug kids just so they’ll listen, something has gone terribly wrong.
Software teaches year-round and is cheaper and easier to replicate than competent teachers.
Hard as teachers may try, whatever they are doing is not working very well. Compared to children in the rest of the developed world (particularly in Asia), our kids are lagging further and further behind. Corporations are becoming increasingly desperate for math and science competence, and are airing commercials urging America to solve the problem by investing in teachers.
But in these times of shrinking budgets, that’s problematic. Austerity advocates howl at paying decent salaries to people who get the summer off, not to mention two weeks at Christmas, a week in the spring, and all those oxymoronic in-service days when no actual teaching goes on. Add to that the cost of the huge educational bureaucracy in Washington, plus state administrators, school buildings, busses, cafeterias, and mountains of support staff, none of which actually educate anyone, and critics wonder why we need to keep doing the same thing if we’re not getting different results.
There is an alternative, say the technologists, and it resides in the cloud and in the children.
Education is still largely based on memorization and recall, all made less necessary by computers. Having knowledge is not as important as knowing how to find it when you need it. Open learning proponents imagine a shift to self-guided cloud-based education, with students supported by mentors instead of teachers. It is not so much that our educational system is broken, argues Sugata Mitra, professor of educational technology at Newcastle University in England, it is that it has become obsolete.
Our current system dates back some 300 years to the heady days of the British Empire. It was Britain’s answer to the problem of running a global enterprise prior to the invention of phones or computers. Computing functions, says Mitra, were provided by hordes of people, educated to be obedient bureaucrats, each identically trained, each able to be posted anywhere in the world. This one-size-fits-all model, still popular with the standardized testing crowd, has little relevance in a world brimming with choice and amplified by technology.
Mitra conducted a series of telling experiments that became known as Hole in the Wall. He installed computers in kiosks imbedded in stone walls, in some of the poorest slums in India for children to use as they wished. And then he left them alone. This is what Mitra calls “minimally invasive education.”
These kids had no English skills, and no computer skills, but in short order they became computer literate; every bit as capable, says Mitra, as a secretary in the West. They taught themselves enough English to use email, chat, and navigate search engines. In several months, they could search the Internet for answers to questions. Their math and science scores improved, and they were able to answer test questions that would normally be asked of older students. And perhaps most valuable, they were able “to form independent opinions and detect indoctrination.” Corporations won’t like that.
Mitra found, however, that minimal human guidance was helpful. So he enlisted mentors. They didn’t need to be knowledgeable, just friendly and caring. Whom better than grandmothers? He put an ad in a British paper asking grandmothers to donate a few hours a week mentoring kids. They were to listen, offer encouragement, and perhaps ask a pointed question or two, but the essential learning process remained self-organized and self-directed.
The model proved so successful that, to date, eight other nations have–to varying degrees–adopted the Minimally Invasive Education model, including Switzerland. And while it would be difficult to impose this model on kids who are accustomed to abandoning any thought of learning once the bell rings, a new generation is being groomed to take full advantage of self-directed learning.
Software developers are producing thousands of educational (and entertaining) applications for toddlers. Hanna Rosin, writing in The Atlantic, says that touch-screen technology was the “game changer.” To a child in diapers, the causal relationship between operating a mouse and getting a desired result was a bridge too far. But any kid can swipe a finger. Rosin quotes technology writer Marc Prensky, who calls these kids “digital natives,” children who grow up comfortable and fluent with technology. Later in life, when they find something they’re interested in or passionate about, they will already have developed all the skills and habits to be self-directed.
Combine this minimally invasive approach to learning with an internship program for real life experience (in case you’re wondering, eBay, Facebook, and Google on average pay more than $6,000 per month for interns), and you have a low cost, high yield education system that gives students the freedom to pursue subjects that actually inspire them. And a system that also transforms teaching.
Most adults are certainly appreciative of the teachers who have touched their lives. But, truth be told, very few were truly memorable. A child could probably find more inspiration from several hours of TED Talks than from a month of classroom talks. Maybe we love the concept of teachers more than the actual teachers we’ve had. What many of us longed for, but couldn’t articulate, was mentorship, which we often didn’t find until we entered the workforce.
Perhaps the grand possibility embedded in the minimally invasive/mentorship model is that educators could transcend teaching and, in Robert Frost’s words, become awakeners.
