youngsters I’ve been assisting Macs because they came out in 1984 (when i was in high faculty), I haven’t obtained any “formal” working towards. It has by and large been gaining knowledge of by using doing, analyzing the occasional ebook and now of route, TheAppleBlog. Does formal certification really make a difference as a technician? You inform me.advertisement
these days I got into an argument with a vendor that come what may idea a technician who first begun repairing Macs sixth months in the past trumped my 25 years event. Did certification make this adult a higher technician? Having done rather a bit of hiring myself, I’ve too commonly discovered that certification only verifies your skill to take a examine and might no longer have bearing within the true world.
Now that the market has modified and everyone seems to be competing for scarce materials, possibly a certification would be an extra facet? What’s the company strategy for independent Mac technicians looking greater? The reply took lots of analysis — even Apple wasn’t able to reply my questions — so gain knowledge of from my journey.
credit goes to each Brian best of BestMacs and Doug Hanley of MacTEK practicing, as a result of without them I wouldn’t consider the alphabet soup of ACSP, ACMT, ACTC, ACSA, AASP, ACN and greater. Didn’t we all become Mac clients to avoid mysterious terms? As lots of you recognize, the ease of the Apple consumer interface is equalled simplest by using the frustration of attempting to have in mind Apple’s certifications classes. finding out this direction turned into a whole lot harder than any video game I’ve ever performed, but a “video game” could be the surest metaphor to describe the technique. The online game
You start the “video game” as a prevalent Mac user. The three worlds you’ll generally see in the online game are IT, professional Apps, and income. As an IT grownup might be you've got expertise, probably you don’t. Nothing stops you from effectively repairing Macs on your personal, until you do things that primarily void the assurance and you get caught doing so. You do not have permission per se from Apple to work on Macs. Many individuals are happy at this degree amassing cash one after the other, however that you could’t proceed any further except you get a certification — the key that unlocks the next stage in the game.
the primary certification most go for is Apple licensed support professional (ACSP) which was known as an Apple licensed help Desk specialist (ACHDS). This certifies your skill to keep in mind the working device and is earned based on the OS version. therefore, you are an Apple certified guide expert in 10.5 (or quickly 10.6). every OS requires certification, however your certification doesn't expire. hence, when you are a ACHDS in 10.three, which you can call yourself licensed with out knowing 10.5 in any respect. Your can take the verify with out working towards (many do), self-study via materials from Peachpit, or attend an teacher-lead direction at an Apple licensed practicing core (AATC). MacTek is a type of centers. You’ll take the verify at a Prometric checking out middle and pay round $200. The examine takes about 90 minutes or so and also you get the results automatically.Apple Consultants network
whereas certification is the skill, the conclusion you can be achieving for is the skill to be a part of the Apple Consultants community (ACN). becoming a member of the ACN requires any Apple certification, such because the ACSP discussed above, or any variety of other certifications (described under, notwithstanding one supply says no longer all certifications are valid, so watch out). holding with the video video game analogy, the ACN is like an entire new area of the video online game you want to explore, but the boss that must be defeated first is Apple, and your weapon is a certification!
After getting a certification you could then apply to be part of the ACN. The application price is $60 and the exact payment to be part of is $395 as a sole proprietor. the complete necessities are here. You’ll get a lot of advantages reminiscent of product discounts as neatly as the capability to community with other Macintosh consultants. As an ACN, Apple save personnel can also hand out your card to customers within the store. Now your business can actually expand as each Apple shop consumer is a potential customer for you.
ACN membership is incredible and many live at this level of the “online game” the usage of the ACN membership as a multiplier for his or her earnings. despite the fact, you nonetheless can’t do hardware repairs under guarantee nor order Apple materials. As with the video online game, you’re caught at this degree unless you explore further and try to defeat the next boss. Apple always controls the rules. settle for it as a part of the online game. Fail to settle for it and you’ll get slapped returned to the beginning of the video game sooner than that you can click on the home button.Server Administration Certification
From this aspect, you've got a couple instructions that you could go. that you can focus on repair and repair, otherwise you can focal point on server or superior software administration (many folks will do each). i'll focus on the server administration certifications and the hardware functions certifications. that you can consider of every of those as two separate worlds in the video game. that you may choose one or the other, or discover them both.
the primary stage server administration certification is a different 4-letter acronym: ACTC: Apple certified Technical Coordinator. in addition to passing the verify for ACSP, you’ll face the Server essentials verify. This extends your workstation advantage to servers. an even greater stage of certification within the server realm is an ACSA — Apple certified techniques Administrator. For the ACSA, you’ll need to pass 4 checks: Server necessities, directory functions, Deployment, and Mobility and security for 10.6 (or advanced equipment Administration for 10.5).
Apple additionally presents the ACMA (Apple licensed Media Administrator) which contains Server necessities, Xsan, last reduce Server and as an option, assist necessities, Deployment, listing services, or last reduce degree 1. other certifications don't seem to be necessarily IT connected and are application-focused. That’s a realm I’m no longer exploring as we chose the IT track at the beginning of the video game.Hardware restoration Certification
moving on from server administration to specific Apple hardware restore, the primary certification you're going to earn is the Apple licensed Macintosh Technician (ACMT), formerly the Apple licensed moveable Technician (ACPT) and Apple certified laptop Technician (ACDT). This certification capability you are theoretically qualified to do warranty repairs on Apple Macintosh machine. The potential required for ACMT are those of hardware fix and application troubleshooting. You don’t need an ACSP to be an ACMT, but many americans earn both. The educational procedure for hardware restoration is extra severe and it’s less possible you’ll circulate the examine devoid of some training. At this degree, that you can also go to an AATC and pay about $four,800 for each the hardware and application features of the course, or your should buy self-examine materials from Apple called “Apple Care Technician practicing” for $299.Apple approved service provider
comparable to how passing the ACSP allows you to join the Apple Consultants community, passing the ACMT lets you enter the realm of an Apple approved carrier company (AASP). You may additionally not automatically become one though, and only AASP’s get compensation from Apple for assurance work. however, being an ACMT is terribly beneficial in case you want to get a job as an AASP. You may also also practice to do warranty repairs for your higher organization of over 50 Macs by way of the Self-carrier application. if you need to advance to being able to do assurance repairs for any one, you’ll face that equal boss once again, Apple. note that becoming an ACMT will now not always earn you any longer funds than an ACSA or ACTC. facing the subsequent boss may well be too costly and too restricting, but when you do desire the subsequent degree, read on.
attending to that AASP degree is truly the last level of the video game. You’ll should have an ACMT on staff and follow stricter requirements than joining the Apple Consultants network. commonly you’ll want a real shop front and never be a one-person operation. Apple promises exceptions (doesn’t each online game have cheat codes?), but don’t count on it. after getting your AASP you can be listed with Apple as a service provider and get reimbursed for warranty repairs.
So I’ve loaded the game and pressed birth. Is certification worth it? What about ACN or AASP? Which practising may still i go for? Is teacher lead practising value it? Any training carriers inclined to sponsor me? What in regards to the self-analyze courses? Share with me your experiences in the game and let’s improve a definitive guide including “cheat codes.”Apple-approved businesses

Apple's 2018 iPad pros pack greater power than nearly anyone will ever want.
on every occasion I get a new gadget to overview, I are trying to focal point on its standout points and use them to their fullest to get a deeper realizing of the product's strengths and weaknesses.
With the iPhone XR, it above all got here down to the screen and never having a secondary camera, so we shot all the product photographs for the review with one other iPhone XR to look if I’d leave out the iPhone XS’s more desirable screen and greater versatile digital camera (spoiler: no).
For Apple’s new iPad execs (2018), I did my most desirable to use my 12.9-inch assessment unit to do every little thing a client could use it for — things like drawing, modifying video, writing, analyzing, looking at videos, listening to song, enjoying 3D video games, and then trying to do as a lot of these things concurrently like you may on a computing device or desktop desktop.
How a whole lot of a “actual” computer adventure can you get with the brand new iPad pros is what i wanted to know. Can it at last substitute a computing device the manner a floor pro can? The answer: might be, kinda, sorta.
There’s no doubt the new iPad execs, with their spankin’ boxier design and slimmer bezels, are eye-catching slabs of glass; Face identification is astounding, they’re even more effective than any iOS machine or competing pills, and they can do some seriously outstanding issues with the right apps.
however the capsules are hampered by the equal boundaries of previous iPads (professional or not): iOS on an iPad still isn’t as powerful for standard work as a MacBook operating macOS. That would not, despite the fact, suggest the iPad professional's strengths are not greater than its weaknesses, notwithstanding.
which you can multitask with elements like opening two or three apps at the equal time, but with the way they’re designed to work, it’s slower than a normal windowed-app experience on a Mac or pc. i like having a touchscreen to faucet and scroll, however I long for a mouse after I need extra precision when i'm doing things like scrubbing through a timeline in a video editing app.
And as vastly greater because the new Apple Pencil is with its potential to magnetically clip onto the iPad professional and wirelessly cost it, and as wonderful because the smart Keyboard Folio’s two perspective positions are, they can charge further, and they're no longer necessarily always a higher change for a tried and actual keyboard (with respectable key trip) and responsive trackpad.
For definite kinds of creative professionals who will get pleasure from the iPad professional’s computer-classification performance, the iPad execs paired with an Apple Pencil are well price the excessive price tag — the eleven-inch starts at $799 and the 12.9-inch begins at $999, respectively, with none add-ons — to free up a new sort of artistic and cellular productiveness.
the brand new iPad pro impressed me to need to do more, to make more, to “think distinctive” similar to the original Mac did when I sat down in front of its all-in-one design, boxy mouse, and drew in MacPaint for the very first time.
but if you’re simply planning to use the iPad professional to watch video clips, browse social media, or play mild games like candy Crush, its capabilities will be wasted, and any older or more affordable iPad or cheaper brand of pill will do.
remember to best get a new iPad pro if you’re gonna be pushing its power. in any other case it’s like getting a sports motor vehicle and under no circumstances using sooner than 35 mph — individuals will ooh and ahh at your bright new factor, but you’ll return home feeling empty every time.
All-new design and Liquid Retina monitor
now not given that the iPad Air has the iPad bought such an enormous design overhaul that it changes everything about Apple’s pill. From the second I touched the new iPad pros right after their announcement, I knew this was the iPad’s very own iPhone X moment.
On the eleven-inch iPad professional, Apple’s extended the monitor dimension (up from 10.5 inches) while conserving practically the identical footprint as the historic model. The iPad seasoned I’ve been trying out, the 12.9-inch one, is the tablet that feels the most tangibly new.
The bezels are slim because the 11-inch and equal on all four aspects, nonetheless it’s so a whole lot less difficult to address on your palms. with out a major “forehead” and “chin” bezels, the 12.9-inch no longer feels like a breakfast tray for those who grab it in landscape. In portrait mode, the aspect bezels are still an inexpensive thickness for your thumbs without difficulty to relaxation on.
each iPad execs are thinner — the thinnest iOS instruments ever — at 0.23 inches (5.9mm) thick, however there’s no flex to them at all. i tried bending my assessment unit with a moderate volume of pressure and it remained inflexible.
The eleven-inch weighs the same 1.03 pounds as the 10.5-inch iPad seasoned, however the 12.9-inch mannequin is 0.10 pounds lighter. It’s no longer some thing you should definitely note, however psychologically since the total device is smaller and thinner it someway appears an awful lot lighter than it in fact is.
In space grey (there’s no other colour for these new iPad professionals), the capsules and their flat sides seem like powerful work shows — not your typical lean-again gadget for binging Netflix. combined with the rounded corners of the Liquid Retina screen, whatever Apple tells me became developed first for the iPad professionals but launched with the iPhone XR first, the modern industrial design is both futuristic yet familiar.
The screen itself is arguably Apple’s greatest liquid crystal display in a device ever, even better than the iPhone XR’s screen personally. while it lacks any kind of 3D contact pressure sensitivity or Haptic touch vibrational remarks, the Liquid Retina monitor remains wonderful from all viewing angles. not to mention, it’s in fact vivid, the colours are wealthy, and the resolution (2,732 x 2,048) is beyond sharp. Its merchandising function, which ramps the reveal refresh expense from 24Hz (for things like studying) the entire means up to 120Hz (for things like scrolling and gaming) is a characteristic of the iPad professionals that I desire the iPhones had.
eye-catching because the monitors are, Apple might have went extra. the brand new iPad pro displays don’t help HDR and as good because the liquid crystal display is, it’s no OLED. It’s no longer a deal-breaker via any ability, but each time I watched Netflix videos with letterboxing (the black bars above and under the content), I cried a little inner that the display wasn’t OLED so that the bars could be as black because the bezels as an alternative of darkish grey.
An OLED reveal with HDR guide would have pushed up the cost even more, however would have made the heftier cost tag greater justifiable.
The relaxation of the iPad pro is pure Apple refinement. The buttons are flatter, but they’re no much less tactile. The quad speakers are physically smaller, however they’re actually a bit bit louder and producer wider and clearer sound. There’s no headphone jack (like you didn’t see that coming?) and that i don’t basically mind on account that AirPods are so, so first rate and decent wireless headphones can be in any price range from $25-$500. if you’re now not down with instant, grab a USB-C-to-headphone-jack dongle from Apple for $9.
Tucked into the good bezel (in portrait mode) is a TrueDepth digicam system. identical to on iPhone X, XS, XS Max, and XR, the digital camera device residences the front-dealing with FaceTime digicam, infrared digicam, dot projector, flood illuminators, and different sensors just like the proximity and ambient light sensors, and a microphone.
It’s super superior camera tech, but right here’s what you should recognize: It supports Face identification in any orientation (portrait, landscape, and even some angles in between), it permits Animoji and Memoji (also respectable for the use of these throughout FaceTime video calls), and it takes selfies (more on that later).
Animoji and Memoji
setting up Face identity
It’s mighty incredible Apple was able to get Face identification to work in any orientation and equally baffling why the iPhone X, XS, and XR can’t unlock in any orientation apart from portrait. It’s not best — I still received some Face id unencumber fails at some angles or if my hand turned into overlaying the TrueDepth digicam system (iOS warns you in case you’re blockading it) — however basically it successfully worked extra times than on my iPhone XS.
The luddites will bemoan the loss of contact identity (even if it’s inaccurate and false that it’s less cozy than Face identification), but I didn’t pass over it one bit. I’ve moved on to Face identification and most effective those who have never used it is going to never take into account how a good deal greater it's for things like unlocking the device, authenticating Apple Pay purchases, and coming into saved passwords.
The largest change anyway the design and Face identification is the USB-C port. sure, my friend, Apple has killed the Lightning port on an iOS device for the first time.
Switching from Lightning to USB-C potential your entire latest cables gained’t work and also you’ll need to buy new ones if you don’t already own some, however the merits of the widespread port are price the swap.
For one, the brand new iPad pros can can charge the use of the equal USB-C cable and energy adapter as the ones that come with any of Apple’s MacBooks (that encompass the MacBook, MacBook execs, and the brand new MacBook Air). Hurray for less crap to trip with!
one more reason USB-C’s more versatile than Lightning: It’s less difficult to join the iPad pros to an exterior display screen (up to 5K decision) and to accessories like a DSLR camera. just by using altering the port, Apple’s very nearly made the iPad pros more like a computer laptop than previous iPads have ever been.
As an awful lot as I hate dongles, it’s so remarkable to not should buy a different Lightning-to-USB dongle to connect with down load photographs from my SD cards without delay to the pictures app. I used the same add-ons i take advantage of for my 12-inch MacBook: an SD card reader plugged into a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter that came with an historical Pixel cell, and voilà, downloaded all my pictures without needing to spend a further penny.
not to mention, with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, the new iPad pro’s have USB-PD (power beginning) and might cost yet another equipment like an iPhone at 7.5 watts. I mean, bumming a can charge off an iPad seasoned is a very good purpose to select an iPad professional to deliver with you on a flight instead of a MacBook.
The possibilities with USB-C are countless… if Apple builds around it. presently, critical accessories that might make the iPad pros greater desktop-like corresponding to hard drives and USB flash drives do nothing if you happen to plug them into the pills. without a Finder or suitable file equipment, there’s just no strategy to study the info on these storage instruments.
It in reality appears like a no-brainer for the information app to be capable of do this and i’m praying Apple adds assist for external storage drives in an upcoming iOS 12 update or iOS 13.
APPLE PENCIL + wise KEYBOARD
The worst component about pills designed as desktop replacements is their hidden fees. As if the pill itself isn’t already costly sufficient, the accessories — necessities to get essentially the most out of it — cost extra and add to the price.
For the iPad execs, the additional prices are for the Apple Pencil and sensible Keyboard Folio. The 2d-era Apple Pencil has been redesigned with a few improvements and as a result prices $129 ($30 greater than the fashioned).
no matter if you settle the updates are worth another $30 is your choice, but I suppose they are. Would I actually have preferred the identical $100 cost? Of route i might have considering that the Pencil’s already expensive ample, but hear me out.
With the new Apple Pencil, Apple’s addressed two of the normal’s chief complaints: storing it and charging it. the brand new Pencil has a matte finish that’s now more convenient to dangle for your fingers primarily in the event that they’re sweaty. New is a flat aspect that’s decent for 2 things: no longer rolling off the desk (sure!) and magnetically attaching to the aspect of the iPad pro.
Magnetically clipping it to the iPad pro additionally connects the brand new Pencil and instant prices it on the identical time. In a briefing for the new iPad execs, Apple showed me a gutted edition of the brand new Pencil and the tightly-packed magnets and components in the slim writing and drawing instrument. It’s a fabulous engineering feat little question.
the brand new Apple Pencil also helps gesture controls. as an example, if you’re doodling within the Notes app, you could double-faucet on the aspect of the pencil and it’ll swap from ink to the eraser (or change it to toggle between existing and final device used, or exhibit the colour palette). different apps can customise the faucet gesture to something they want. In a demo at the iPad pro’s announcement, we saw Photoshop use it to zoom in on an image. It’s a valuable addition and that i in reality hope builders get enjoyable with it like might be use for gaming or whatever.
past these changes, the brand new Apple Pencil’s the same responsive stylus as the old one. The tip’s pinpoint genuine and there’s very nearly no lag when dragging it across the iPad professional’s monitor.
no matter if it’s drawing (enjoyable fact: the entire animations during this assessment had been drawn by way of Mashable’s proficient senior illustrator Bob Al-Greene the use of the new iPad pro, Apple Pencil, and Procreate app) or splitting video clips in Adobe foremost Rush CC or iMovie, the Apple Pencil’s so versatile for growing things on the iPad execs it’s virtually a ought to-purchase accent.
there's one bad piece of news: the first-gen Apple Pencil doesn’t work with the brand new iPad pros and the brand new Apple Pencil received’t work with older iPad execs.
The different ought to-have accent that makes the iPad professional extra like a desktop is the wise Keyboard Folio ($179 for the eleven-inch and $199 for the 12.9-inch).
The keyboard’s generally the equal with the identical liquid-resistant lined keys. So if you didn’t just like the previous sensible Keyboard you doubtless won’t just like the new ones. Me? i love that the keyboards have greater go back and forth than the “butterfly switch” keyboards in all the MacBooks. I wish the Keyboard Folio’s keys were backlit, but i will be able to touch classification so isn’t an important biggie.
I do must credit score Apple for improving “lapability”. compared to the outdated wise Keyboard, the new one has two angles to position the iPad professional and makes for more comfy viewing angles with the set in your lap or on a desk.
I also like that the Keyboard Folio protects the total backside and magnetically clicks into place on the iPad professional using over a hundred magnets embedded into the tablet’s aluminum backside.
Apple’s keyboard is respectable, however I discovered myself wishing it had a trackpad like on the floor pro’s contact Keyboard. i do know that you would be able to touch the iPad’s display and perhaps Apple thinks the Pencil is an outstanding satisfactory mouse substitute, however’s less demanding to have a cursor input at keyboard level as an alternative of having to reach up and tap with a finger, or the Pencil, or use a two-finger gesture on the screen to name up a cursor once I’m doing things like typing heaps of words (like this evaluation which I wrote about a 3rd on an iPad pro earlier than going back to my MacBook pro since it became less difficult to multitask).
The insane vigor is true
I don’t even be aware of the place to begin with the new iPad professional’s efficiency. The A12X Bionic chip powering the tablets is this kind of monster and up to now forward of every other competing cellular chip that it’s most likely time to cease classifying it as mobile silicon.
When the common iPad pro launched in 2015 with A9X chip, Apple touted its energy as akin to computing device performance and our personal exams verified the speed.
Three years later, the new iPad professionals take performance to yet another level. The 7-nanometer A12X Bionic’s based on the A12 Bionic interior of the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR and although they’re an identical, the A12X Bionic is significantly greater powerful due to its 8-core design versus the 6-cores in A12 Bionic.
Apple says the chip is up to 35 percent quicker on single-core and as much as ninety percent quicker on multi-core strategies. I broke out the authentic Geekbench four to verify both claims.
using the general of three CPU checks, the new iPad seasoned scored 5,027 on single-core and 18,050 on multi-core in comparison to the 2017 iPad pro’s three,964 single-core and 9,529 multi-core scores. That makes the new iPad pros 27 % sooner on single-core and 89 percent faster on multi-core — all inside Apple’s claims.
As I’ve said time and again once more, synthetic benchmarks like these CPU rankings give you an idea of where the brand new iPads professional rank in comparison to other instruments. however what you in fact wish to be aware of is what sort of tangible performance you could get from such power and may it really make a difference on your work.
i will’t communicate for every type of person’s needs, however i will let you know modifying video on the go isn't easy. Ask any video producer and they’ll advocate the usage of a beefy computing device with a discrete images processor, particularly in case you’re crunching 4K video files, and rendering loads of transitions and results, and many others.
The extra powerful your CPU and GPU, the faster video clips will render and export. So I put the iPad professional’s to the task.
the use of Adobe most efficient Rush CC, I created a 3-minute lengthy undertaking file such as 5 4K video clips (fascinated with an iPhone XR for our XR review), tossed in a title on the entrance and a “Subscribe” card on the conclusion, delivered three video clip transitions (two dissolves and one dip-to-white), and colour-graded two clips each and every with one filter preset.
The entire assignment weighed in at 179MB and despite the fact I had hoped to export the video in 4K, the highest settings that you can export in Rush CC on mobile is 1080p at 30 fps. considering the fact that the videos were shot at 24 fps, I chosen settings for 1080p and 24 fps, after which hit the export button.
I did this on multiples iOS gadgets working iOS 12.1 and took the ordinary of three exports checks and right here’s what I bought (don’t fret, all contraptions had been charged to 100% and remained plugged in to stay away from any type of performance throttling from depleted battery health:
I additionally did the export check on my MacBook operating the newest edition of macOS Mojave and a surface pro operating the latest version of windows 10 pro:
Breaking down the numbers, the brand new iPad seasoned exported the video fifty six % faster than closing-gen iPad professional, and 711 percent faster than a 4-yr-old iPad Air 2, and 115 % faster than the iPhone X.
The efficiency hole is smaller in comparison to the iPhone XS — the new iPad seasoned exported the video 35 p.c sooner — but nonetheless quicker. The time saved from looking ahead to an export to be comprehensive is time that will also be put towards importing or doing something else.
much more nuts is the iPad seasoned’s performance in comparison to laptops. It exported the video 124 p.c sooner than my 2015 12-inch MacBook and 804 % faster than a 2017 surface pro and even the brand new 2018 MacBook Air.
These are preliminary performance exams, too. It’s up to developers to optimize their apps to faucet into the A12X Bionic’s insane energy so it’s very possible stronger code could suggest even quicker performance.
lots of the apps I demonstrated equivalent to Rush CC, Lightroom CC, Procreate, and others weren’t optimized for the the iPad professional’s screen decision (you’ll comprehend because they don’t fill out the whole monitor), however I expect them to be up-to-date on the day of the pills’ liberate or presently after.
The A12X Bionic’s uncooked vigour makes everything on iOS (and i mean everything) believe faster. captivating 3D video games like Asphalt 9 and Fortnite run smooth and infrequently with any framerate considerations. It’s very telling when Fortnite at “high” photos settings is playable at 30 fps, but a 2017 top-of-the-line 2017 15-inch MacBook seasoned with discrete snap shots can barely load it with out lag.
Battery lifestyles is additionally as superb as on old iPads. Apple advertises "up to 10 hours" for combined usage and that i obtained just about exactly that for reading, enjoying some games, watchings lots of YouTube and Netflix, and typing out a few of this overview. extra intensive apps like Rush CC and iMovie will drain your battery quicker, so keep that in intellect. however even nevertheless, I nevertheless bought round 7-8 hours whereas working with professional-level apps.
iOS 12 on iPad professional is, well… iOS 12. With iOS 11, Apple gave the iPad execs a a great deal-crucial productivity increase that more suitable used the higher displays. features like Slide Over, which means that you can open a 3rd app on appropriate of two break up-display apps, drag-and-drop, a dock that holds greater apps, screenshot annotations in Notes, and the data app narrowed the hole between an iPad seasoned and, say, a floor seasoned or a Chromebook, but now not by using a great deal.
while there are an entire bunch of latest facets in iOS 12 (see our full evaluate here), most of them can be found on both iPhone and iOS with very few of them being iPad-simplest. It’s satisfactory to look the stocks and Voice Memos app ultimately on the iPad, and the more advantageous versions of Apple information, Apple Books (previously iBooks), and Apple song present on iPad, but I’d like to see Apple rethink not just these apps, but iOS as a whole for the iPad.
certain, iOS 12 uses the new gestures first introduced with the iPhone X (brief swipe from the domestic bar to return to the homescreen, swipe up towards the core to bring up all your recent apps, and swipe up from the top left and right corners to convey down notifications and the control core), all of that are very convenient to get used to, but simple 2-in-1 laptop things like cursor guide, or keyboard shortcuts, or actual windowed-apps are either nonexistent or nonetheless not yet available in lots of apps.
I’m aware that iOS is a completely distinctive approach of doing things in comparison to macOS and windows 10 and that i don’t understand what’s the most reliable solution to make it more like these computer working programs with out compromising its lightness. All i do know is the extra Apple maintains cramming in so an awful lot vigor into the iPad seasoned, the more I desire it could do extra macOS issues.
iOS 13’s nonetheless a 12 months’s out, however I strongly suppose Apple must revamp iOS for the iPad professional to truly make the hardware more compelling.
No equipment overview is comprehensive without any sort of digital camera assessments. An iPad’s no iPhone, which means you’re now not gonna be using it to take many pictures or video clips.
So it’s no longer definitely disappointing to look the iPad pro’s get a little of a digicam downgrade. The rear digital camera’s nevertheless a 12-megapixel shooter, but Apple’s changed it from a six-factor lens to a 5-point lens and removed optical photograph stabilization.
i used to be upset originally — you always want a higher digital camera in each new product — however after listening to Apple’s clarification and pondering concerning the variety of times I’ve used my iPads for capturing pictures, I understood the alternate.
One: Most americans don’t use their iPad cameras and after they do, it’s commonly for things like taking photographs of notes or documents or scanning QR codes. And two: since the iPad pro is so thin and the place of the digital camera now needs to sit in the back of the reveal (the digital camera on the old-gen iPad pros sat within the house inside the true bezel), Apple needed to redesign the camera to fit in the aluminum case.
if you’re scanning documents, then no huge loss. but if you’re within the minority and do shoot together with your iPad, you’re gonna notice some loss in sharpness from shaky hands.
iPad pro (2018)
iPad seasoned (2017)
On the vibrant facet (pun meant), the iPad pro cameras take photos with wise HDR, which raises the dynamic range and brings out the shadows and highlights.
iPad pro (2018)
iPad pro (2017)
Selfies, however, get a couple more alternate options. here’s how an everyday selfie compares:
iPad seasoned (2018)
iPad seasoned (2017)
And right here’s Portrait mode and the 4 diverse studio lights outcomes:
Stage mild Mono
Portrait mode is just purchasable on the entrance-facing digital camera. Why can’t the iPad pro’s single-rear camera shoot portrait mode shots the use of the Neural Engine and computer getting to know to isolate backgrounds like on the iPhone XR? Apple wouldn’t say and even inform me if it’s anything that can be brought later in a utility replace.
And if you’re shooting video (extra vigor to you in case you wanna be the subsequent Martin Scorsese taking pictures with a tablet), the iPad execs shoot 4K at 30 or 60 fps. old iPads might simplest list at 30 fps.
Enabling the following day's creators and creations
the use of the the 12.9-inch iPad pro for the last week, I stored asking myself: who're these potent new tablets for?
and i saved coming lower back to the artistic expert — the niche consumer who is willing to exchange the way they’re used to doing things on a computing device or computing device — and not the mainstream person. which you can of direction purchase an iPad pro as a result of maybe you ought to have the newest and gold standard Apple device and it’ll be a great consumption pill, but you wouldn’t be getting your money’s value.
It’s difficult to persuade people who have already dependent a way of working to create with new equipment and in a distinct manner. It in fact felt bizarre originally for me to edit a video via basically “drawing” with it the use of an Apple Pencil with the iPad pro laid flat on a desk instead of on a monitor parallel to my face. but after just a few hours doing issues in this new method, it felt herbal. engaged on a video felt new and the lightbulbs were going off in my head like they haven’t in ages.
This actual closeness with digital content introduction is a paradigm shift from mouse and keyboard. On a desktop or desktop, you click on issues and it feels mechanical and inhuman. With an iPad professional, you’re touching the glass with your fingers, you’re slicing clips or drawing traces with the Pencil, and you’re feeling the words as you class them out on a keyboard and touching them on the screen should you fix typos.
"the new iPad execs are best high priced if you buy one and don’t create issues with it."
It’s such an intimate creation technique that it made me recognise that Apple’s now not in simple terms making an attempt to trade my or your historical habits. Apple’s not making an attempt to make the iPad seasoned a laptop alternative since the machine is never one. It’s making an attempt to do anything bigger: invent a brand new means of creating for a new generation that isn't certain to the old computing legal guidelines of clicking a mouse.
For the following day’s creators, growing on iPad execs may be ordinary. The iPad pros have already got the power to make and design the prosperous and remarkable visual and audio content for the following day. The equipment, devices, and apps are not any diverse than when creators shifted from analog to digital with the creation of personal computers a long time in the past.
similar to with the long-established Mac, the new iPad pros are made for creators who will gladly embody the expenses because it makes issues so a whole lot less demanding and quicker. the new iPad pros are best expensive if you buy one and don’t create things with it. in any other case, they’re a steal for any person who wants the long run, nowadays.

FRESNO, Calif. — The federal government had finally called her back to work after 35 days, but now Vicki Ibarra wondered how she could afford to get there. Her used sedan had been repossessed by the bank a few days earlier. The family minivan had a faulty engine and barely any gas. Her Internet had been cut off a month into the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, so she used a friend’s wireless password to log into her bank account. There was $0.38 left in checking and $7.80 in savings, the sum total of 16 years at the IRS.
“This is like disappearing into quicksand,” she said to her friend, Ernie Delgado. “Even once I get back at work, how am I supposed to dig out?”
“You need to start asking for help,” he said.
“Who?” she said. “How? That’s never been me.”
Ibarra, 45, had built her adult life on the principle of self-sufficiency — raising two children by herself, adopting her teenage niece, devoting her career to a government job because it promised meaningful work and 9-to-5 dependability. The salary was modest at about $35,000 a year, so she often stayed late to work overtime. Even when her credit cards were maxed out, she’d been able to make at least the minimum payments. Even if she sometimes needed an extension on her rent, she’d spent 25 years in the same two-bedroom house, where a small sign was posted on a bedroom wall: “Get up and go get it!”
That was the person she had been right up until the government shutdown began at 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 22, forcing her to miss one paycheck and then another, leaving her with no income for the first time since she turned 18. Ibarra had been told once during an IRS training that about 60 percent of American taxpayers live paycheck to paycheck and that 40 percent are unable to afford a $400 emergency. Her first emergency had been the missed car payment, which forced her lease into default because she was already behind. Next went her cable. Then came two unpaid credit cards bills and a rent check that was almost three weeks overdue.
She’d tried to fend off bill collectors by selling some of her furniture and asking strangers for help in an online fundraiser. “I’ve always been an independent lady who never needed any help,” she’d written. “I don’t know what to do.”
The one thing she hadn’t done yet was ask for money from her friends or family members, several of whom had come to rely on her. She was still helping to support her adult daughter, who had a new baby. She often cooked big meals and then delivered to-go packages to her friends and siblings. “I’m taking it from you at the IRS, so I might as well give some back,” she liked to tell them. Now she took out her phone and started writing a text message to one of her old friends.
“You know I’m proud, so it kills me to ask you this,” she wrote, and then deleted it.
“This shutdown has me hurting. Any way you can help?” she wrote, and deleted it again.
“Let’s catch up sometime!” she wrote finally, before hitting send.
She went into her bedroom to choose her outfits for the upcoming week, laying out possibilities on a blowup mattress. She’d sold her bed to a friend a month earlier, after she heard President Trump say the shutdown would last until Congress paid for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, whether that took months or a year. Ibarra’s own financial margin had usually been measured down to the hour even before the shutdown — making payments up against deadlines, borrowing from one credit card to pay down another, spending exactly what she earned to cover essentials for her son and her niece. It was a high-wire act that unfolded each two-week pay cycle, and she was able to pull it off because of the predictability of her government job. Every other Wednesday, she could count on about $900 being deposited into her bank account after deductions, so she could pay down her debts before catastrophe came.
She picked out earrings for the next morning and set her alarm. Her co-workers sometimes joked that she was the perfect fit for the detail-oriented IRS, always at her desk with a cup of coffee five minutes before her shift began. She spent her workdays checking line items in strangers’ tax returns and then brought that meticulousness back home, keeping spreadsheets of her own finances and a binder of laminated certificates commemorating her “loyal government service” for five, 10, and then 15 years.
Her cellphone rang and she answered it. “Hey, you got my text?” she said, and then her friend said he had just read about the end of the shutdown.
“So I guess this is congratulations,” he told her. “They actually made a deal? You’re getting paid back for all of this?”
She thought about telling him how her back pay, whenever it arrived, would cover less than half of what she now owed in overdue payments and late charges. She thought about telling him how the deal in fact only promised federal funding for the next three weeks, at which point she could be out of work again. She thought about all of the things she had already forfeited to the shutdown, and how much she’d always valued being able to provide for herself.
“Yep, it’s over,” she told her friend. “I’m back at work tomorrow. It’s the best kind of news.”
“So you’re okay then? You’re making it?”
“I hung in,” she said. “You know me. I’m a go-getter.”
She awoke the next morning at 5:30. She straightened her hair, drained the last $7.80 in her savings account to buy gas, and made it to work five minutes before her shift. She ate a packed lunch from a food bank, stayed after work for a voluntary training session, and then came back home to find more bills waiting in her mailbox.
She owed her cellphone company $190. The bank was giving her nine more days to pay $3,200 for her car — the accumulation of missed payments, late penalties, interest and repossession charges. If she failed to pay, the bank would resell her car to someone else and charge her the difference in price, possibly as much as $10,000.
“We are hoping to be able to work with you as a loyal, long-standing government employee,” one letter read.
She had first applied to work at the IRS because she believed the words “government employee” would give her clearance into a different kind of life. She’d gotten pregnant with her daughter during high school, dropped out, and then gone back a few years later to earn a degree. She worked as a bartender, a waitress, and a secretary before a relative gave her an application for the IRS. “Trade your job for a career,” it read. “Use your talents to serve the American public and fund our future. You really can help make our nation a better place.”
It had taken her a few tries to get hired, first for seasonal work and then full-time. She had risen from data entry clerk all the way up to tax code instructor. The IRS had needed someone to relocate to Texas, so she agreed to move for six months. A boss suggested she learn more about IT, so she enrolled in college classes at night, until the fatigue of 15-hour days culminated in a series of minor strokes that required her to wear a heart monitor at her desk.
Her friends sometimes told her she was sacrificing too much for an $18-an-hour job, but she considered it an investment. She was committed to the government, and the government was committed to her. It was a contract that came with sick leave, decent dental coverage and the likelihood of promotion. She decorated her home with tiny American flags and small posters testifying to the value of commitment and hard work.
“Work from your heart. Love what you do.”
“Loyalty is always rewarded.”
She had never cared either way about politics, or whether there was a concrete wall or a steel barrier or metal slats or nothing at all along the U.S.-Mexico border, but she admired President Trump for his business savvy. She believed he was a tough negotiator, but lately she felt like collateral in one of his deals. “I’m sure that the people that are on the receiving end will make adjustments,” he had said, and she was thinking about how many more adjustments she needed to make when her 15-year-old son walked into her bedroom one afternoon, fidgeting with a tennis ball and looking concerned.
“How real is that?” he asked.
“Not real yet,” she said, even though she’d already visited a low-income housing project a few miles away, a squat green apartment complex where three bedrooms went for $600.
“Seriously,” he said. “I just want to know.”
His baby handprints were cemented on their front porch next to hers, “Baby Johnny, 8-4-05.” He had never lived anyplace else.
“I’m not planning on going anywhere,” she told him, and then she gave him a hug and waved him out of the room. She watched him walk away and took out her cellphone.
“Hey,” she wrote to an ex-boyfriend. “I need a huge favor. Can I borrow some $?”
The ex-boyfriend said he already owed money on his back taxes. A cousin said she was between jobs. Another relative said she’d just invested all of her extra cash in a house.
“I hate to even ask you for this,” Ibarra texted to friends, again and again, until she’d made her way through most of the contacts in her phone, none of whom had $3,000 to spare. She put in an application for part-time work at a store near her house. She sent a few blind Facebook messages to celebrities asking for help. The bank called and left automated messages on her phone saying she had eight days left before it sold her car. Seven days. Five.
She awoke one morning with her alarm at 5:30 and decided to do what she had rarely done: call her manager to tell him she would be late. “I know we’re back at work, but I’m still dealing with the fallout from not working,” she said.
The day before, she had received $1,900 in back pay, which she planned to put toward rent, cable TV and her phone. That still left her with overdue credit card payments and $3,200 for the car. She printed out a few of her recent pay stubs and a statement of her remaining debts. Then she compiled everything into a folder and drove to the bank to apply for a loan.
“So I guess this is your rainy day,” a banker said, leading her to a desk with two chairs. She handed him the pay stubs from the folder. She told him about her 16 years at the IRS, the shutdown, and her repossessed car.
“We’ve had four or five people coming in every day because of the shutdown,” he said. “Let’s see if we can help.”
“Oh, thank you,” she said. She sat back in her chair and waited while he typed into his computer. “What are your interest rates?” she asked.
“It all depends on your credit,” he said.
She winced and reached into her folder for another piece of paper, this one with her credit score in bold: 540. She handed it to him. He glanced at it and then looked back at his computer. “Okay,” he said.
“Just so you know, that number isn’t really me,” she said. “I used to be way up in the 700s, always had real good credit, but then with this whole shutdown one unpaid bill started piling into the next.”
The banker was still looking at the computer.
“I’m not trying to make up excuses,” she said. “I’m just saying, that number is giving you the wrong idea. This isn’t me. I’m a go-getter. I’m a single mother. I usually take care of everything myself.”
“Right, but this is your score,” the banker said. He gestured back to the number in bold, and she nodded.
“No problem,” he said. “We can still do an application and see what comes back.”
“But I’m not going to qualify, right?” she said.
“We can’t really say.”
“But probably not.”
“No,” he said. “I’m sorry. Probably not.”
“So what am I supposed to do?” she asked, her voice rising an octave, the frustration building, eye shadow smudging on her cheeks as her sentences collided. “I can’t even. . . . I’ve been working nonstop, and then it’s just. . . . Can’t you see this isn’t my fault? How am I supposed to prepare for something that’s —”
He reached across the desk and lightly touched her arm. “Look. There are other options,” he said, and he pointed down the street, in the direction of a sprawling shopping center with three payday lenders. She collected her papers off his desk, left the bank and drove a half mile down the road, parking in front of a neon green billboard that read: “Instant Cash Today!”
She sat in the parking lot for a few moments, staring into a storefront. A security guard stood watch at the door. A house painter with white smudges across his jeans spoke to an employee seated behind thick glass. Ibarra could see a poster on the wall advertising a 200 percent annual rate on loans, and she took out a piece of paper and ran through some quick calculations. If she borrowed $3,000, she figured she would have to pay back at least $6,000 over the next year — an extra $500 monthly she couldn’t afford, especially with another potential shutdown just days away.
“Bring us your problems,” read a sign inside the store, and at the moment, she could think of nowhere else to take them. This was how far she had fallen after a 35-day shutdown. She wondered how much worse it would become if the government shut down again.
“Out of one crisis and into another,” she said. Then she touched up her makeup in the rearview mirror, grabbed the spreadsheet of her debts and headed toward the door.
We’ve all heard stories of the perfect Craigslist find—no, not the one from the Casual Encounters section that you’re afraid to take home to mom—about the car your buddy has always wanted and claims he got it for not much more than the cost of a set of tires for a modern car. Well, in the case of Joe Seeno and the shoebox Nova SS he’s always wanted, that’s exactly what happened.
“I happened to be looking at Novas on Craigslist one afternoon in February 2017, and stumbled across this ad for a 1963 Nova SS,” he says. “There were a few photos of a disassembled car with no engine, transmission, or front clip. The ad was posted for about 10 minutes. I called the guy and asked him to hold the car for me. I grabbed a trailer, front body dollies, and made the three-hour drive to Penngrove, California.”
After inspecting the car and realizing that it had the correct X on the body tag, the right SS trim holes all over the body, and the correct dash trim and gauges, he made the deal. Even though the interior and front clip were gone, the rest of the parts were stashed—fenders, hood, grille, bumpers, and glass—and came with the car. After exchanging $1,000 for the title, he bolted his body dollies to the chassis, loaded everything up, and rolled out.
But at the time he was building a ’71 C10 pick-’em-up truck, so he took the Nova home and covered it up while he finished the truck. All the while, he was collecting Nova parts when and where he could.
“I bought a set of restored side trim pieces, found the correct SS bucket seats, and bought a TCI Pro Touring front clip. I already had a 355 small-block and I picked up a T-56 six-speed trans from a ’95 Camaro,” he says. Once the C10 project was completed, the plumber from Granite Bay, California, dragged the Nova to the work area and stripped the many layers of paint that had accumulated over the years, then reassembled the entire car—using the parts that came with it along with all of the others he had purchased to finish it—and drove it for a few months to make sure all of the bits and pieces worked properly.
Are you exhausted yet? Hearing about the time and effort and sweat equity that went into Joe’s rebuild process, we sure are—but we’re just getting to the good stuff!
“In January 2018, I stripped the car back down, doing the bodywork and straightening all of the gaps for the doors, fenders, hood, and decklid. And I blocked the car for days,” says Joe. Nobody likes blocking, but it’s a necessary evil, and Joe shows no aversion to hard work. He completed this entire project from top to bottom and front to back. To get the body lines perfect, the front end of the car was removed and he worked the firewall to get it just right, welding up all of the extra holes in the process. The factory harness hole was closed off; he made a custom piece to weld in around the steering column to clean up that area and even filled all of the spot welds on the firewall before painting it and the cowl sides.
The front fenders and trunk lid were painted off the car, and the body and doors were last in the queue. The body panels are covered in base-clear Torch Red Matrix pigment, a color clearly designed to catch the eye. A 2-inch steel cowl hood from Auto Metal Direct completes the car’s exterior appearance modifications. “I cut and buffed the front fenders so I could install the trim before installing the fenders, then cut and buffed the rest of the car,” he says.
With about eight weeks to completion, he placed an order for a set of custom Schott Octane wheels, which measure 18x8 all around, with 4.75-inch front and 5.25-inch rear backspace settings. All of the stainless trim was shipped out to have the dents removed and a complete polishing process completed. The entire car was reassembled with new gaskets and seals.
With the body refinishing complete, he turned to the engine. The 355 was completely torn down, whereupon he painted the block, bought a new Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap intake, Holley Avenger carb, Comp Cams hydraulic cam and roller rockers, and MSD Pro Billet distributor among other goodies designed to help the SS run as strong as it looks. On top of the block rests a set of Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum cylinder heads, and 10.5:1 compression provides the pop. A 7-quart oil pan, Melling high-volume oil pump, double-roller timing chain, and three-row aluminum radiator complete the essentials.
Ceramic-coated 1 3/4-inch headers lead into a 2.5-inch aluminized cross-pipe. From there, the exhaust gases exit through a set of Flowmaster Super 44 mufflers to provide that classic muscle car sound. The TCI front clip includes a set of 2-inch drop spindles, tubular A-arms, 300-lb/in springs, and adjustable shocks. GM front brakes with 11-inch rotors help to stop the car from speed. In the rear, he retained the traditional OE leaf-spring arrangement but with a set of 2-inch lowering blocks to get the car to sit just right. For now, he left the stock drum brakes in place, but we suspect that will change soon enough. A 10-bolt rear with fresh 3.73:1 gears and a Positraction differential to maximize grip found its way under the car. Lastly, he welded a set of subframe connectors in place. His plan is to eventually put a four-link rear suspension underneath the car to optimize its performance even more.
Inside the car, all of the stock components like seats and door panels are covered in black vinyl, with a new cut-pile ACC carpet covering the floor. Of course, Joe installed it all. Although these photos show stock gauges, they have since been replaced with Dakota Digital VHX instrumentation for an updated, modern look and performance. The transmission is controlled by a Hurst shifter, which is topped off with a Pistol Grip handle. He even went so far as to have a custom billet aluminum parking brake handle manufactured to finish off the interior’s appearance just so.
The entire project, with the exception of powdercoating, polishing, and other small tasks of the sort, was completed by Joe Seeno and his own two hands. Over the course of a year—and with the never-ending support from his wife, Ashley, who didn’t complain when he spent every night working on it over that time period—he’s built a Nova SS that any Chevy lover would be proud to own.
“I couldn’t believe the deal I got on this car. It was a shell and a box of parts,” he says. We can’t believe the deal either, and we can’t believe what he turned it into with a ton of hard work and careful planning. Bravo!

Although I’ve been supporting Macs since they came out in 1984 (when I was in high school), I haven’t received any “formal” training. It has mostly been learning by doing, reading the occasional book and now of course, TheAppleBlog. Does formal certification really make a difference as a technician? You tell me.Advertisement
Recently I got into an argument with a vendor that somehow thought a technician who first started repairing Macs sixth months ago trumped my 25 years experience. Did certification make this person a better technician? Having done quite a bit of hiring myself, I’ve too often found that certification only verifies your ability to take a test and may not have bearing in the real world.
Now that the market has changed and everyone seems to be competing for scarce resources, perhaps a certification would be an additional edge? What’s the business strategy for independent Mac technicians wanting more? The answer took a lot of research — even Apple wasn’t able to answer my questions — so learn from my journey.
Credit goes to both Brian Best of BestMacs and Doug Hanley of MacTEK Training, because without them I wouldn’t understand the alphabet soup of ACSP, ACMT, ACTC, ACSA, AASP, ACN and more. Didn’t we all become Mac users to avoid mysterious terms? As many of you know, the ease of the Apple user interface is equalled only by the frustration of trying to understand Apple’s certifications programs. Figuring out this path was much harder than any video game I’ve ever played, but a “game” may be the best metaphor to describe the process. The Game
You begin the “game” as a general Mac user. The three worlds you’ll generally see in the game are IT, Pro Apps, and Sales. As an IT person maybe you have skills, maybe you don’t. Nothing stops you from simply repairing Macs on your own, unless you do things that specifically void the warranty and you get caught doing so. You do not need permission per se from Apple to work on Macs. Many folks are happy at this level collecting coins one by one, but you can’t proceed any further unless you get a certification — the key that unlocks the next level in the game.
The first certification most go for is Apple Certified Support Professional (ACSP) which used to be known as an Apple Certified Help Desk Specialist (ACHDS). This certifies your ability to understand the operating system and is earned based on the OS version. Therefore, you are an Apple Certified Support Professional in 10.5 (or soon 10.6). Each OS requires certification, but your certification does not expire. Therefore, if you are a ACHDS in 10.3, you can call yourself certified without understanding 10.5 at all. Your can take the test without training (many do), self-study via materials from Peachpit, or attend an instructor-lead course at an Apple Authorized Training Center (AATC). MacTek is one of those centers. You’ll take the test at a Prometric testing center and pay around $200. The test takes about 90 minutes or so and you get the results immediately.Apple Consultants Network
While certification is the means, the end you may be reaching for is the ability to join the Apple Consultants Network (ACN). Joining the ACN requires any Apple certification, such as the ACSP discussed above, or any number of other certifications (described below, though one source says not all certifications are valid, so beware). Keeping with the video game analogy, the ACN is like an entire new area of the video game you want to explore, but the boss that must be defeated first is Apple, and your weapon is a certification!
After getting a certification you can then apply to join the ACN. The application fee is $60 and the actual fee to join is $395 as a sole proprietor. The full requirements are here. You’ll get lots of benefits such as product discounts as well as the ability to network with other Macintosh consultants. As an ACN, Apple store employees may hand out your card to customers in the store. Now your business can really expand as every Apple store customer is a potential customer for you.
ACN membership is great and many stay at this level of the “game” using the ACN membership as a multiplier for their income. However, you still can’t do hardware repairs under warranty nor order Apple parts. As with the video game, you’re stuck at this level unless you explore further and try to defeat the next boss. Apple always controls the rules. Accept it as part of the game. Fail to accept it and you’ll get slapped back to the beginning of the game quicker than you can click the home button.Server Administration Certification
From this point, you have a couple directions you can go. You can focus on repair and service, or you can focus on server or advanced software administration (many folks will do both). I will discuss the server administration certifications and the hardware services certifications. You can think of each of these as two separate worlds in the game. You can choose one or the other, or explore them both.
The first level server administration certification is another 4-letter acronym: ACTC: Apple Certified Technical Coordinator. In addition to passing the test for ACSP, you’ll face the Server Essentials test. This extends your workstation abilities to servers. An even higher level of certification within the server realm is an ACSA — Apple Certified Systems Administrator. For the ACSA, you’ll need to pass four tests: Server Essentials, Directory Services, Deployment, and Mobility and Security for 10.6 (or Advanced System Administration for 10.5).
Apple also offers the ACMA (Apple Certified Media Administrator) which includes Server Essentials, Xsan, Final Cut Server and as an option, Support Essentials, Deployment, Directory Services, or Final Cut Level 1. Other certifications are not necessarily IT related and are software-focused. That’s a realm I’m not exploring as we chose the IT track at the beginning of the game.Hardware Repair Certification
Moving on from server administration to actual Apple hardware repair, the primary certification you will earn is the Apple Certified Macintosh Technician (ACMT), formerly the Apple Certified Portable Technician (ACPT) and Apple Certified Desktop Technician (ACDT). This certification means you are theoretically qualified to do warranty repairs on Apple Macintosh equipment. The skills required for ACMT are those of hardware repair and software troubleshooting. You don’t need an ACSP to be an ACMT, but many people earn both. The educational process for hardware repair is more intense and it’s less likely you’ll pass the test without some training. At this level, you can also go to an AATC and pay about $4,800 for both the hardware and software aspects of the course, or your can purchase self-study materials from Apple called “Apple Care Technician Training” for $299.Apple Authorized Service Provider
Similar to how passing the ACSP allows you to join the Apple Consultants Network, passing the ACMT allows you to enter the realm of an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). You may not automatically become one though, and only AASP’s get reimbursement from Apple for warranty work. However, being an ACMT is very helpful if you want to get a job as an AASP. You may also apply to do warranty repairs for your larger organization of over 50 Macs via the Self-Service program. If you want to advance to being able to do warranty repairs for anyone, you’ll face that same boss again, Apple. Note that becoming an ACMT will not necessarily earn you any more money than an ACSA or ACTC. Facing the next boss may be too expensive and too restricting, but if you do want the next level, read on.
Getting to that AASP level is really the final level of the game. You’ll need to have an ACMT on staff and follow stricter requirements than joining the Apple Consultants Network. Generally you’ll need a real store front and not be a one-person operation. Apple grants exceptions (doesn’t every game have cheat codes?), but don’t count on it. Once you have your AASP you can be listed with Apple as a service provider and get reimbursed for warranty repairs.
So I’ve loaded the game and pressed Start. Is certification worth it? What about ACN or AASP? Which training should I go for? Is instructor lead training worth it? Any training vendors willing to sponsor me? What about the self-study programs? Share with me your experiences in the game and let’s develop a definitive guide including “cheat codes.”Apple-authorized Organizations
ACN (Apple Consultants Network)What it is: Network on Apple professionals, receives discounts and assistance from Apple, and can be referred from Apple retail stores.Requirements: Any certification.
