notice taking apps for Mac are a enjoyable class to analyze on account of the diversity of alternatives in the marketplace. There are apps like Evernote which aim to be an “everything” bucket and apps like SimpleNote that simplest deal with simple textual content notes. then you definately have apps like endure and Apple Notes which purpose to are living someplace in the core. When i'm looking for the most effective be aware-taking app for the Mac, i'm trying to find a few various things: sync to iOS (and internet if feasible), convenient to add new notes, and straightforward to lookup existing notes. I’ve used dozens of apps through the years, and i have opinions on what a observe-taking app for Mac should appear to be for my use circumstances. lots of the apps present free trials, so i advise you to verify all of them out. I’ll run through a few of the apps, after which I’ll help you figure out which can be the most useful word-taking app that you can are attempting.
When taking a look at macOS word-taking apps, your needs may additionally appear greatly diverse from what you’ll want on iPhone and iPad. On the iPhone, velocity of starting a new observe could take priority. On the iPad, handwriting integration with Apple Pencil might take precedence.
When searching on the foremost observe-taking app for the Mac, the components which are important for me are: capability to prepare in folders/tags, pace of search, and ease of adding new notes from different apps. in response to the event I’ve had with word-taking apps for the Mac, I got here up with six incredible alternatives reckoning on what’s vital to you.Evernote
Evernote is a type of apps I variety of don’t be aware now not present. It at the beginning launched in 2008 as an internet service and has added valued clientele to pretty tons every platform over the years. It’s an ideal example of the everything bucket. that you could load the rest you desire into Evernote, and it will sync it far and wide else you employ Evernote.
I used to hate Evernote, after which I loved Evernote. My issue with Evernote has an awful lot less to do with Evernote, but greater than there are just greater polished alternate options. I believe like OneNote is a stronger every thing bucket, and Apple Notes is built into each Mac and iOS gadget. Evernote isn’t dangerous, however I just don’t adore it. For me, it’s just a provider that stayed stagnant whereas others around it advanced. One factor of Evernote that’s in reality well done is its internet clipper for saving counsel from webpages.
Evernote presents a free version, however i'd suggest the paid upgrade in case you plan on the usage of it. It’s $eight per 30 days or $70 per yr. Upgrading receives you 10 GB of month-to-month uploads, offline notebooks, ahead emails into Evernote, and automated OCR scanning of your documents.
Evernote may also be downloaded for free on the Mac App save.Apple Notes
Apple Notes is built into every new Mac, and your storage is blanketed along with your iCloud account (5GB for free of charge). It has some pleasant integrations constructed into macOS where you could add Safari items right to Notes. Like Evernote, you could add textual content, info, photographs, and extra to notes. you could organize notes in folders (and subfolders), nevertheless it does lack the skill to create new notes by means of e mail like Evernote. That characteristic alone makes me consider Evernote once in a while.
Is Apple’s Notes perfect? No, however it’s complicated to see the place it gained’t healthy the needs of most people. if you have a little bit primary notice needs, then Apple Notes will probably be just right for you. The cost of storage is developed into the charge of iCloud, so you can create heaps of notes with pictures, information, and so on. with out worrying about operating out of space.endure
undergo is a familiar observe taking app for macOS (and iOS) with an easy design, colossal function set, and robust sync. It reminds me of Apple Notes on steroids. undergo appears very akin to Notes.app, nevertheless it includes a lot of features Apple decided not to build in. a few of them are Markdown support, observe linking (linking to different notes), diverse issues, export to word, hashtag company, and greater.
in case you actually are looking to like Apple Notes, however simply doesn’t do somewhat satisfactory that you can be regarded the most efficient observe-taking app for Mac, then i would try undergo. It’s convenient to be taught the basics, nevertheless it can do a great deal when you spend a while with it.
bear is a free app, however a $15/year subscription unlocks sync between your entire devices, over a dozen topics, and export alternatives.
bear can also be downloaded without charge on the Mac App save.OneNote
On the Mac, Microsoft office has gotten a lot more advantageous in fresh years. The group at Microsoft has spent extra time and resources making the apps consider more native to macOS versus simply an affordable home windows port.
OneNote is a kind of apps that you just probably have to your computer but could have under no circumstances opened. It’s actually really first rate, notwithstanding. It’s a lot more effective than bear or Apple Notes, and it’s extra based on the category of app Evernote tries to be. it could sync essentially the rest, and it means that you can prepare it in very nearly any method you desire. in case you work at a company this is heavy into the Microsoft ecosystem (and also you use a Mac), i'd no longer hesitate to recommend OneNote to you because the premier be aware-taking for the Mac.
OneNote can be downloaded on the Mac App save.Simplenote
Simplenote is yet another one of those apps that I bought years ago on iPhone before Automattic purchased it. For a very long time, there wasn’t a macOS version. clients may use SimpleNote on iOS after which an app like Notational speed on macOS.
evaluating Simplenote to anything like Evernote or OneNote doesn’t seem to be appropriate as they're absolutely distinctive. Simplenote lets you collaborate with others, supports Markdown, and makes use of tags to arrange. It’s all about undeniable text, although. in case you want anything to aid pictures, handwriting, etc, you’ll must appear in other places. but if you want a undeniable textual content be aware-taking app for Mac, i might test it out.
SimpleNote is a free app on the Mac App shop.Notational pace
i discussed Notational velocity with Simplenote, and it’s an additional app make sure you take a look at. it might probably sync with Dropbox or the Simplenote API so that you can entry your notes on iOS. It’s a less complicated version of Simplenote, and it feels extra native to macOS. Notational speed excels at velocity and search. if you have tons of of notes that you are looking to be in a position to form via at once, then you’ll need to supply it a try (it’s open source).
Notational velocity can also be downloaded for gratis.Wrap-up
When looking for the most effective notice-taking app on the Mac, you really want to decide what kind of be aware-taking app you need to use. if you want whatever for simply undeniable textual content notes, examine our Simplenote or Notational pace. if you want whatever for notes, images, PDFs, and so on then take a look at Evernote or OneNote. in case you desire some thing within the center, i would go together with Apple Notes.

featureThe next edition of Mac OS X will deliver an up-to-date version of iChat capable of logging into Yahoo IM debts, presenting an superior experience when the use of assorted accounts, and adding internet page sharing in iChat Theater. The fragmented world of IM
iChat, Apple's bundled rapid messenger app that developed from origins as an intention chat customer to being a video-enabled IM customer supporting the open XMPP/Jabber protocol, now adds help for a 3rd IM protocol: Yahoo IM.
in contrast to email, which all providers aid by the use of usual necessities, IM has lengthy been partitioned into proprietary solos, with AOL, ICQ, Skype, Yahoo and Microsoft MSN/are living Messenger all the usage of their personal closed programs for text and video chat (Apple's .Mac/MobileMe carrier uses AOL's IM server, and AOL gives an SMS gateway that makes it possible for iChat users to send SMS messages to cell numbers).
Yahoo and Microsoft announced a chat-most effective gateway between their capabilities, as did AOL and ICQ (AOL except lately owned ICQ). In other instances youngsters, any individual who wants to change messages with clients on distinct programs ought to use a multiprotocol chat client and create separate money owed for each carrier. on the other hand, you could configure your personal gateway server or use an external gateway that logs into your account on an additional service to schlepp IM messages between the incompatible account kinds.
Mac OS X Lion's iChat 6 now adds help Yahoo IM, youngsters the carrier looks to most effective assist text chats, no longer Yahoo audio or video chats. on account of the chat gateway between Yahoo and MSN, this should still permit iChat users to attain both populations of chat accounts, besides existing guide for Jabber/Gmail IM and video chat and AOL/ICQ/MobileMe IM and video chat. although, while the Lion iChat customer does work with Yahoo money owed, the gateway between the Yahoo and MSN doesn't definitely seem to work.
Evolution of iChat
starting with iChat AV in 2003, Apple delivered guide for SIP, requisites primarily based video chat. The next yr, AOL delivered compatible video chat in its AOL IM client for windows, permitting Mac and home windows clients to video chat using the goal community.
Alongside the liberate of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, Apple shipped a brand new version of iChat with assist for the open XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, in the beginning named Jabber), enabling iChat to work with both intention and open customers together with Apple's own iChat Server in Mac OS X Server and later, Google's GTalk carrier. iChat's Bonjour chat among native users on the same community also makes use of XMPP.
In Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Apple integrated aid for VNC reveal sharing, allowing users to share their laptop remotely as a video chat over both the XMPP or aim protocols. Apple additionally launched iChat Theater, which might share a photo, video, or any document supported with the aid of quick look over a video chat (beneath).
Third birthday celebration guide for tapping into these aspects changed into additionally introduced to a brand new quick Message framework.
On page 2 of 2: New in iChat 6, iChat vs FaceTime.
the new Apple MacBook seasoned provides the all new contact Bar with contact identity while additionally giving us an normal thinner and lighter design than the old MacBook professional. unluckily, the latest MacBook professional suffers from comparatively susceptible battery existence, negative keyboard design, and a scarcity of ports.
although Apple updates the MacBook professional on a beautiful commonplace time table these refreshes tend to be moderate spec bumps as newer processors turn into purchasable. The remaining time Apple made a “enormous” redecorate to the MacBook pro become back in 2012 with the introduction of the primary technology Retina reveal. Over the remaining four years we’ve seen a wide array of notebooks with ultra HD and 4K shows, so it was time for Apple to offer customers anything new.
originally glance the brand new MacBook seasoned doesn’t seem to have changed that a whole lot, but you directly beginning to prefer up the transformations in the design as you look closer. the brand new MacBook pro has a redesigned unibody aluminum chassis it's considerably thinner and lighter than the old technology. The 13-inch mannequin that we’re reviewing here weighs in at simply 3.02 pounds and it’s just 14.9mm thick. this is additionally the primary MacBook seasoned obtainable space grey. in case you’re curious concerning the 15-inch MacBook pro, that measures 15.5mm thick and is 14 % thinner than the historical 15-inch MacBook pro.
Open the screen lid and you’ll start to in reality notice the adjustments. The trackpad has grown significantly and now takes up a enormous proportion of what was once the palm leisure or wrist leisure area under the keyboard. The touchpad is so massive that you simply’ll basically certainly touch it every time you classification. thankfully, Apple’s contact rejection application works nearly completely and we not ever had a significant problem with cursor stream or clicks as we typed.
Of path, the design alternate that has grabbed the most headlines is the brand new touch Bar discovered simply above the keyboard. here is practically a narrow capacitive touch screen that shows loads of diverse controls based on the app that you simply’re using or the customized preset that you’ve chosen. The contact Bar additionally has an integrated touch identity fingerprint scanner that no longer simplest works to replace your passwords but also works with Apple Pay to simplify on-line purchases. We’ll speak greater concerning the touch Bar later during this evaluation.
nonetheless, if you set aside the novelty of having a thin touchscreen above the keyboard then Apple mostly seems to be standing nevertheless when it comes to the design whereas options like the Dell XPS 13, HP Spectre X360 and Lenovo Yoga 710 are making giant advancements to their designs with each new era.Apple MacBook seasoned Ports and lines
The MacBook seasoned has traditionally delivered an improved preference of ports and contours than a daily MacBook. This time the brand new MacBook pro has extra ports … but no longer a better selection of ports. Apple naturally believes that USB category-C (USB-C) and Thunderbolt 3 are the entire ports that you simply’ll need aside from a single combination headphone/mic/headset audio jack. There’s no developed-in reminiscence card reader for photographers or movie makers, no good sized USB ports, no Ethernet port, no HDMI and never even a mini DisplayPort. USB-C is even used for vigor, which capacity any of the 4 ports will also be used to can charge the MacBook professional. One unintentionally humorous design alternative is that iPhones do not ship with USB-C to lights cables … so there is not any technique to connect an Apple iPhone to the Apple MacBook professional until you by an adapter dongle.
One different merchandise of observe right here is that since USB category-C is now used to deliver energy there is not any extra iconic “MagSafe” energy adapter. reckoning on who you are that can be a very good component or a nasty element. ordinary tourists are sometimes reminded of the benefit of the MagSafe each time somebody trips over your vigour twine in a crowded airport or coffee shop and the energy adapter is safely unplugged as a substitute of being violently ripped out of your MacBook. On the flip facet, you won’t should fret about a minor pull for your vigour twine fighting your battery from charging. in my view, i would fairly have a MagSafe energy adapter and know that my laptop and/or power adapter cable received’t be damaged if a person journeys over my energy cord.Apple MacBook pro reveal and speakers
The 13.three-inch Retina reveal in our evaluate unit of the MacBook professional facets a monitor decision of 2500 x 1600 pixels (227 ppi), meaning it’s the equal decision as remaining year’s MacBook seasoned. The massive change comes in phrases of the screen backlight; this Retina screen has a optimum brightness of 500 nits, making it an mind-blowing 67 % brighter than the outdated era MacBook pro.
furthermore, Apple claims that this monitor promises a 25 p.c wider colour gamut that now comprises the P3 colour house; that won’t matter for informal users however concerns if colour administration is vital to your work (photographers, videographers, print managers, and so forth.). general buyers may no longer observe the delicate change between two diverse colours of orange, however refined adjustments in colors are extremely important in case you’re modifying a whole bunch of wedding photographs for a client’s album or you should colour match a new baseball group emblem with the team uniforms.
If the visuals aren’t sufficient to provoke you then the audio simply might seal the deal. Apple absolutely transformed the stereo speakers resting below the skinny speaker grilles on either facet of the keyboard. These speakers are not only completely located to direct sound up and toward the user, however they deliver twice the dynamic latitude and 58 % extra quantity. in short, the built-in audio system produce sounds which are chiefly loud and clear. We heard no obtrusive distortion or crackling in music tracks or within the audio from streaming video capabilities like Netflix and Amazon best. We constantly imply that Audiophiles use a fine set of headphones or exterior audio system, but we believe secure in asserting that most individuals could be very satisfied with the sound coming from these developed-in stereo speakers.Apple MacBook pro Keyboard, contact Bar and Touchpad
Apple keyboards have turn into anything of a technological icon over the ultimate twenty years, and the newest keyboards are somewhat entertaining due to their extraordinarily shallow key motion with just about zero physical commute in the keys as you press down. no matter if or no longer the keyboard on the MacBook seasoned believe decent to you is dependent upon the way you class. contact typists who category with a light-weight press will consider sufficient remarks for accurate typing, however but when you’re somebody used to greater traditional mechanical switches on computer or gaming keyboards you then’ll find the shallow key move very irritating. regardless of the restricted key trip the particular person keys make extra noise than what we customarily hear from home windows PCs with flat keyboards. We wouldn’t say the MacBook pro keyboard is “loud” however the key motion is extra substantive than the keys on the Dell XPS 13.
the new touch Bar discovered without delay above the keyboard appears impressive, but Apple engineers naturally didn’t pay attention to the diverse home windows notebooks which have used identical touch strips in previous years … as a result of these identical error are repeated here. For starters, the contact Bar is too close the correct row of keys and it’s a long way too convenient to press the touch Bar for those who’re just trying to press a bunch key or the backspace key. now not handiest that, but changing the traditional row of feature keys with the contact Bar potential that you would be able to’t use common keyboard shortcuts. one of the vital buttons available in the contact Bar are greater handy, such because the ship mail button, but having general characteristic keys would nevertheless be quicker.
thankfully, you've got the alternative of customizing the touch Bar shortcuts so that you can change the order, add, or get rid of any shortcut within the touch Bar by the use of the View menu on the computing device. That also potential you can customize the manner you exchange settings that could continuously be a part of the traditional row of function keys. that you could trade quantity through urgent the quantity icon and swiping left or right on the volume slider otherwise you can set the volume by means of pressing the arrow key and the quantity button. briefly, you've got custom controls however no longer always “better” controls. Having dedicated quantity buttons within the feature row is more straightforward and quicker.
The an awful lot-hyped contact identification fingerprint scanner is built into the energy button on the right facet of the contact Bar. while the potential to cozy your laptop together with your fingerprint is extraordinarily effective, windows PCs had been using fingerprint scanners for greater than a decade. more to the aspect, the contact identification sensor is no more correct than any fingerprint sensor and the area for the contact identification sensor within the contact Bar is “inconvenient” to assert the least. We discovered it very effortless to press the backspace button accidentally when using touch identity … and we could always classification a password in much less time than it took for contact identity to respect our fingerprint and free up the MacBook professional. Having Apple Pay built-in into touch id makes online shopping less difficult, however most effective in case you’re the usage of the Safari browser while browsing. We’re also now not sure why Apple handiest lets you register three fingerprints with contact id on the MacBook pro when the iPhone can register five distinctive fingerprints.
most likely the largest alternate to the brand new MacBook pro aside from the contact Bar is the extremely huge touchpad observed beneath the keyboard. This touchpad is forty six percent greater than the force contact trackpad on the previous 13-inch mannequin. similar to the previous drive touch models, this force touch trackpad is a proprietary “clickpad” vogue contact surface that makes you consider like you’re clicking a button, when definitely the touchpad surface is a fixed piece of glass with a vibrating haptic engine under. This allows Apple to make the laptop thinner and gives more space interior the computing device chassis for a larger battery or different gadget components. that you can use force-delicate force touch gestures to preview links in the Safari browser, preview data in Finder or speedy-ahead videos in iTunes. That referred to, most americans will simply be happy to have a massive touchpad for general multi-contact gestures like “pinch” and “pull” for zooming or two-finger scrolling of pages.Apple MacBook professional performance
The 13-inch MacBook seasoned is powered via your option of twin-core models of Intel sixth-generation Core i5 or i7 processors. In different phrases, the MacBook pro is working CPUs that are a full technology at the back of the latest home windows PCs. invariably when an oem releases a new product with older hardware that capability engineers have invested extra time in making sure that the hardware provides the most suitable performance with the most appropriate battery existence and the lessen cost CPUs translate into much less expensive fees for buyers. alas, neither of those are the case with the MacBook professional. The $1799 price tag is excessively excessive considering that we’re speakme about older processor expertise and the battery lifestyles is frankly bad by way of modern necessities; extra on that later in the review.
Our review unit comes with a 256GB PCIe-primarily based SSD, 8GB of 2133MHz LPDDR3 RAM and a 2.9GHz Core i5-6267U processor with rapid boost up to three.3GHz. The Intel Iris snap shots 550 is the integrated graphics unit of the sixth technology Skylake processors and is roughly corresponding to older entry-stage committed photographs just like the Nvidia GeForce 930M. in the event you spend $1799 for a laptop with the note “professional” in the title you are expecting a power apartment. That’s now not what you’re getting right here. Intel firstly launched the Core i5-6267U lower back in late 2015. bound, this CPU handles word processing, image enhancing, and even simple video transcoding simply, however we’re nonetheless speaking a few twin-core processor this is more than a year historical in a “new” computing device being sold at a premium expense point.
typical consumers will no doubt find the gadget efficiency is more than astonishing, in particular considering the fact that the PCIe SSD delivers extremely fast records transfer speeds and helps the MacBook pro feel “snappy” despite the older hardware interior. still, in case you’re a young entrepreneur attempting to edit hours of 4K video photos or handle complex monetary number crunching for a multi-million-greenback client you'll possible find the MacBook professional struggles to get the job accomplished.Apple MacBook professional Benchmarks
wPrime 32M processor efficiency consequences listed in seconds (lessen rankings point out greater efficiency):
Geekbench three (32-bit) Multi-core performance Benchmark outcomes (greater ratings indicate more suitable performance):
Geekbench 3 (32-bit) Single-core efficiency Benchmark effects (bigger rankings point out improved efficiency):Apple MacBook pro Battery lifestyles
Apple MacBooks have historically offered miraculous battery life that constantly exceeds what we customarily see from windows-based mostly PCs thanks to the indisputable fact that MacBooks and macOS are developed to work together from the birth; the group developing macOS knows the place they deserve to make adjustments to the code to reduce vigor consumption with the aid of the hardware, and the hardware crew knows what equipment substances the OS must get work finished. The fruits has been brilliant battery life … previously.
Apple formally claims that the new MacBook pro will deliver “as much as 10 hours” of battery existence whereas connected to Wi-Fi, but we couldn’t get greater than about six hours of battery existence out of this notebook even once we reduced the monitor brightness to the minimum environment. The “time remaining” estimate that seems in the touch Bar after you press the battery icon fluctuates far more wildly than any old MacBook we’ve reviewed in recent memory. We’re now not certain if this is as a result of the drastically brighter backlight in the new Retina monitor or the manner that the Intel processors scale power up and down based on present undertaking necessities … or if there's a bigger difficulty with power administration internal the latest MacBook professional collection.
As we organized this overview for publication Apple released a brand new replace to macOS Sierra (10.12.2) which in reality eliminates the “time closing” estimate from the new MacBook seasoned. We ran a number of new battery existence tests and there's no clear improvement in battery lifestyles. at the time of this writing Apple looks to have fixed the concern with terrible battery existence and a wildly fluctuating battery existence indicator by way of eliminating the visual indication of your final battery lifestyles. That’s not what our editors call a “repair” but that’s the closest thing to an answer that Apple has offered so far.
on the conclusion of the day we will’t break out the sensation that Apple engineers have forgotten whatever that used to be simple to Apple items; the idea that controls may still be intuitive and believe “natural.” while which you can argue that the visible symbols on the contact Bar are extra intuitive than the static symbols printed on old-common characteristic keys, they’re very nearly nothing “herbal” about the use of the touch Bar. contact identification and Apple Pay integration is a constructive component, but we believe contact identification would have felt extra intuitive and herbal if it become constructed into the gigantic touchpad or a committed fingerprint scanner next to the touchpad.
mix our frustrations with the touch Bar with weak battery life, hardware from 2015, limited ports and no SD card reader and the Apple MacBook pro feels less like a “knowledgeable” tool and greater like an overpriced MacBook. it truly is most likely the biggest failing of this computer; the MacBook pro line is supposed to be feature-packed and exceptionally advanced to the normal MacBook since it’s designed for working gurus. This isn’t purported to be a glorified family unit pc … but this is precisely what the MacBook pro has develop into.
you can’t connect any of the average company peripherals to the MacBook professional except you buy the crucial USB type-C adapters, you can’t transfer pictures or video from reminiscence playing cards without a compatible exterior card reader, that you can’t use standard keyboard shortcuts for generic apps like Adobe artistic Cloud or Microsoft office, and to add insult to damage you get less battery life right here than what you get in a less expensive MacBook.
The things that make the brand new MacBook pro appealing are the things that casual users hunting for a family unit laptop could like; a good looking monitor, good audio system, snappy typical performance, and a design that’s thinner and lighter than the previous MacBook professional. in short, Apple made a just a little improved MacBook … and a worse MacBook professional.

Once you’ve got your Mac prepped, make sure to check out our review of OS X Mountain Lion.
Apple is set to launch Mac OS X 10.8 “Mountain Lion” this week, adding a spate of new features to its desktop operating system—many of which are borrowed and adapted from its even more widely-used iOS mobile operating system. With Mountain Lion, Mac OS X is getting things like Game Center, Messages, Notification Center, one-step sharing to services like Twitter and Flickr, and (eventually) integrated Facebook support. Mountain Lion also picks up new security features to help keep things like the Flashback botnet from happening again, deepens integration with Apple’s iCloud services, and offers built-in dictation so users enter text into almost any app just by speaking.
Apple is also upping its upgrade game with Mountain Lion: it’ll be available as a download from the Mac App store for just $19.99 — pretty much the lowest price ever charged for a mainstream commercial desktop operating system.
But is there a catch? What do Mac users need to know before they upgrade to Mountain Lion?Is your Mac compatibile?
The first question, of course, is “Can my Mac run Mountain Lion?” The basic answer is that if you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion” or Mac OX 10.6 “Snow Leopard,” the answer is probably yes. If you’re running an older Mac with Mac OS 10.5 “Leopard” or Mac OS X 10.4 “Tiger,” the answer is maybe…and your path to Mountain Lion will probably be at bit complicated.
Here’s the deal. Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion requires a Mac with at least an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, an “advanced” graphics processor, and (since Mountain Lion is 64-bit through and through) a logic board that can support a 64-bit kernel. In practice, this means the following Macs support Mountain Lion:
This list omits some older MacBook Pros, iMacs, and Mac Pro models that can have compatible processors and run a 64-bit kernel. Although it has not been officially confirmed by Apple, the reason is widely believed to be that drivers for the graphics systems in those older set-ups are all 32-bit. Mountain Lion will not load 32-bit kernel extensions…even if they’re graphics drivers.
Not sure which Mac model you have? If you’re running Lion, click the “More Info” button in “About this Mac,” available in the Apple menu: your model description appears right at the top of the “Overview” panel. The same command works in Snow Leopard and earlier, but you want the “Model Identifier” field, which will say something like “MacBookPro4,1.” (Treat the comma as a decimal point.) For Mac minis, MacBook Pros, and Mac Pros (and Xserves, just in case you have one) you need a machine that’s “3.1” or greater. For MacBook Airs, you want “2.1” or greater, for plain-old MacBooks you want “5.1” or greater, and for iMacs you want “7.1” or greater. If your number is lower than that…Mountain Lion not for you.
These hardware requirements are the most complicated Apple has had for an operating system in years.
What else do you need? Mountain Lion officially requires a minimum of 2 GB of RAM; though, we really can’t recommend trying to use Mountain Lion effectively on less than 4 GB of RAM. Similarly, Apple says you’ll need a minimum of 8 GB of free disk space to install Mountain Lion. We’d recommend having at least double that amount. How to get Mountain Lion
As with Mac OS X 10.7 before it, Apple isn’t making Mountain Lion available on DVD: customers will have to get it online from the Mac App Store. Although it will be priced at $19.99, it will be a mammoth download in the neighborhood of 4 GB. If you’ve got a comparatively low-bandwidth connection to the Internet, the download could take many, many hours: set aside some time, or (if your Mac’s portable) maybe relocate someplace with tons of bandwidth for the basic download.
So here’s another gotcha: users can only get to the App Store if they have Mac OS X 10.6.8 or newer, an Apple ID, and either App Store credit or payment information (like a credit card) on file. If you’re running any version of Mac OS X 10.6, you can upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 for free using software update: again, the process might take a while, but when you’re done you’ll have access to the App Store.
If you’re running Mac OS X 10.5 or earlier (and have a compatible Mac—see above!) your official route to Mountain Lion is to buy a DVD copy of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (still available from Apple for $29.99), install that, then connect to the App Store and pay an additional $19.99 to install Mountain Lion. However, before you do that, you’ll want to make sure the software you need everyday can run on Mountain Lion — and get upgrades or find alternative solutions if it can’t make the transition.
By default, Mountain Lion installs in place over Mac OS 10.6.8 or 10.7 — you don’t need to boot from a separate drive or media to perform an installation. However, users can perform a clean install of Mountain Lion to an empty disk — that’s particularly handy if you want a totally fresh start, and the installer includes a File Transfer utility to move your existing media, documents, settings, and files from you current Mac OS X installation over to the Mountain Lion clean install. A clean install lets you run disk utility and other checks before you install Mountain Lion; however, it also erases the target disk — so don’t do it without complete backups!Make a bootable backup before installing Mountain Lion!
Before installing Mountain Lion, make a bootable duplicate of your existing Mac OS X system to a separate hard drive or partition. That way if anything goes wrong, you can always get your Mac back to its current state.
A bootable backup is not the same as the incremental backups offered by backup systems like Apple’s own Time Machine. A bootable backup basically copies everything on your existing Mac OS X boot volume to another device (we really recommend using a separate external hard drive for this). If push comes to shove, you can then boot your Mac using that external device, and copy your working system back to your Mac if anything goes wrong. It’s a snapshot backup, but it’s a fantastic safety net if anything goes wrong.
Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t provide a great way to create bootable backup disks. Your best best are the venerable SuperDuper ($28, but with a free clone-only mode) and Carbon Copy Cloner (30-day trial, now $30 leading up to Mountain Lion with licenses). Depending on your device, making a full copy of your boot drive may take some time (FireWire is faster than USB 2, USB 3 faster still, and Thunderbolt fastest of all) but there’s really no better safety net.
Once you’ve made a bootable backup, test it. Connect the drive, restart your Mac and hold down the Option key. The Mac will display a list of valid bootable volumes. Select your backup and make sure your Mac boots from its normally. A bootable backup isn’t much good to you if it doesn’t boot.Check your software
This is more of an issue if you’re upgrading from Mac OS X 10.6 or earlier, but before upgrading to Mountain Lion, you should check to see if your everyday software will work correctly with Mountain Lion. If you’re already using Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, you shouldn’t have many problems: although some applications will issue upgrades to take advantage of new Mountain Lion features or to work with Apple’s new sandbox security, for the most part Lion-friendly applications will work with Mountain Lion.
For Mac OS X 10.6 the situation isn’t so clear. Mac OS X 10.6 included Rosetta, an emulator that enabled Macs with Intel processors to run software originally built for Macs with PowerPC processors. Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard” was the last version of Mac OS X that could be installed on PowerPC Macs, but thanks to Rosetta, Intel-based Macs could run most software written for PowerPC machines. Rosetta was great: for the most part, the apps just ran like you’d expect: no muss, no fuss.
For better or (I would argue) worse, Apple ditched Rosetta in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, meaning Macs running Lion can’t run PowerPC software at all. If you’re planning to upgrade from Mac OS X 10.6 or earlier, you should check your software to see if it can run on Intel processors.
The program will churn for a few moments while it scours your disk for software, then present a list. It will find an astonishing number of applications. Key applications from Apple (Mail, iTunes, Safari, etc.) will all be updated with Mountain Lion, but you should look for other applications that you rely on, paying attention to the “Kind” column. If the entry says “Intel” or “Universal,” the app should run under Mountain Lion. If it says “PowerPC” or (gasp!) “Classic,” the software will not run under Mountain Lion. You will need to find an upgrade or replacement for that application.
You should evaluate the compatibility of your software before installing Mountain Lion. After all, once you upgrade, it’s too late: if you need to get something done immediately, but the app you need doesn’t work, you’re between a rock and a hard place. (You did make that bootable backup before you upgraded, right? Right?!)
Where do people most trip up with older Mac software?Software Workaround Microsoft Office 2004 Microsoft Office 2008 (no Visual Basic) or 2011 (with Visual Basic); other alternatives include Open Office and Apple’s own Pages and Numbers. Quicken 2007 and earlier After a long wait, Intuit finally released a version of Quicken 2007 for Lion; they also offer Quicken Essentials. Neither offers feature parity with the Windows version of Quicken. Several other financial management programs are available for Mac OS X; whether any are appropriate or true Quicken replacements depends on users’ situations. AppleWorks Check out Apple’s own Pages and Numbers for word processing and spreadsheet needs; OpenOffice and Microsoft Office are also available, although neither offers database or drawing tools. For databases, maybe look at FileMaker or Bento. Adobe Photoshop CS2or older Adobe Photoshop CS3 was the first to support Intel Macs. Upgrades are available to Photoshop CS6; many folks can get by with Photoshop elements or apps like Pixelmator. Utilities and games Check with developer to see if Intel/Mountain Lion versions are available. One particular gotcha is AppleScript scripts: many can simply be recompiled for Intel-based Macs using the Script Editor, but others rely on scripting extensions (OSAXen) that haven’t been updated to run on Intel Macs or Lion. Do you use FileVault?
Many Mac users (particularly MacBook users) use FileVault, a security feature that encrypts either a user’s data or a full disk so users’ data is secure in the event a device is lost or stolen. FileVault 1 that debuted with Mac OS X 10.3 Panther merely encrypted the contents of a user’s home folder. Mac OS X 10.7 Lion substantially improved this security option with FileVault 2, which encrypts the entire disk.
But here’s the thing: if you were using FileVault 1 under Snow Leopard or earlier, you could still be using it under Lion or Mountain Lion: Mac OS X would actually be running FileVault 2 on top of FileVault 1. If you’re upgrading from Snow Leopard or earlier, we recommend turning off FileVault right before you upgrade, then turning on the much-better FileVault 2 once the upgrade is complete.Check your software and services
Finally, once you’ve checked all your software, made your bootable backup (you did do that, right? And tested it?), you should note some of your settings and credentials to make the upgrade process easier:
AppleID: Make sure you have your AppleID(s) and passwords handy, and give some thought to how (and if) you want to take advantage of iCloud services. You’ll need an AppleID to purchase Mountain Lion in the first place, but you’ll also need it for using any iCloud services — and Apple is increasingly putting iCloud at the center of both the Mac OS X and iOS universes. With Mountain Lion users still can’t merge AppleIDs — that’s a much larger issue that Apple will have to deal with — but users will need their credentials to authorize media and app purchases.
Social media credentials: Mountain Lion has integrated support for Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, and Vimeo: if you plan to use those services, get your credentials together so you can set up Mountain Lion to use them.
Sharing and firewall settings: When you upgrade to Mountain Lion, you may find that it turns off certain sharing and access features — we’re not sure why, but in our testing the reversions are always err on the side of being more secure rather than less secure. Open System Preferences and note your settings for things like screen sharing, file sharing, printer sharing, etc. You may need to turn those back on after installing Mountain Lion. Similarly, if you’ve made configuration changes to Mac OS X’s built-in firewall, make a note of them and make sure they’re still intact in Mountain Lion. That’s It!
For most users — particularly folks running Mac OS X Lion — the process of upgrading to Mountain Lion should be pretty painless. (You did made that bootable backup, right?) The most complicated scenarios are for folks who skipped Lion and are now considering Mountain Lion. The good news is that a broad range of Apple’s recent Macs will support Mountain Lion just fine; the bad news is that it may be a little more complicated for those folks to get to Mountain Lion.
For folks running Mac OS X 10.5 or earlier, the simplest solution may actually be to buy a new Mac with Mountain Lion pre-installed — not coincidently, that’s exactly what Apple hopes some users will choose. That scenario might also be the best of both worlds: all your old software running exactly as you like, and a new, fast system will all the latest bells and whistles.
In October of 2010, Apple held a media briefing at its Cupertino campus. It called the event Back to the Mac, and one of the key pieces of news was the first public showing of OS X 10.7 Lion, an upgrade to its Mac operating system. Lion was the first version of OS X to reflect the influence of iOS, the software on the iPhone and iPad: It brought a bunch of iOS features “back to the Mac,” including an App Store, a full-screen mode, and FaceTime video chat.
It was a big idea. Too big, it turns out, to fit into one upgrade.
Today, Apple is unveiling OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, its first major update to the Mac’s software since Lion. As its name suggests, it feels like a continuation of Lion–one that borrows even more features from iOS. It also ties Apple’s two operating systems more tightly together through iCloud, Apple’s service for storing documents and other data on the Net. The overall emphasis on iOS influence and iCloud integration is so overwhelming that Apple could have called this upgrade “Lion Part II” or “Lion iCloud Edition.”
As usual with new operating systems, Mountain Lion is getting its first wave of publicity long before it’s ready for consumers to buy. Apple is spilling the beans now because it’s releasing a preview version for developers today. It says it plans to finish the software by the summer, which would let it release the update–via its Mac App Store–roughly a year after Lion shipped in July 2011. That’s a rapid turn-around time by operating-system standards: Lion appeared 23 months after its predecessor, Snow Leopard.
Apple recently briefed me on the new features and loaned me a MacBook Air loaded with a beta version of Mountain Lion. I’ve been test-driving for the past week. It’s a tad glitchy and is missing some features, so it’s too early to render a decisive verdict. But it works well enough that I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the fully-baked version later this year.
The first big thing you’ll notice about Mountain Lion is–well, it’s the fact that you probably won’t instantly notice anything big. Despite the profusion of new features borrowed from iOS, Apple has left the venerable basics of OS X’s user interface pretty much alone, including the desktop, the Dock and windows. (It’s a strikingly different approach from Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8, which demotes the classic Windows look and feel in favor of a radical new one based on Windows Phone 7’s Metro interface.)
Dig into Apple’s upgrade, however, and you’ll discover new signs of iOS’s influence lurking everywhere.
None of them are more obvious than Notification Center, a consistent, centralized mechanism for calling your attention to things going on in applications other than the one you’re using. A notification can pop up momentarily in the upper right-hand corner of the screen to remind you about a meeting scheduled in your calendar, for instance, or to alert you to an incoming e-mail or instant message. Swipe with two fingers along the touchpad’s right edge, and you can summon a scrolling list of all the notifications that have been displayed recently. Except for the fact that everything sits on the right hand of the display rather than the top, it’s all very much like the notification system that Apple introduced in iOS5. And it should be particularly useful when you’re working in a program’s full-screen mode and don’t want to leave it in order to keep tabs on other apps.
Now, centralized notifications in OS X aren’t a wholly new idea: Many third-party OS X apps already use an excellent open-source system called Growl. Apple’s take on the concept is slicker than Growl, though, and if it ends up being supported by more programs, it’ll be an even bigger boon.
From the moment that Apple announced the first iPhone in 2007, I assumed that it would eventually bring iChat, the Mac’s instant-messaging software, to the iPhone. It still hasn’t. But with Mountain Lion it achieves a similar effect by replacing iChat with Messages, the iPhone/iPad messaging app that debuted in iOS 5. And you don’t need to wait for Mountain Lion’s general availability to try it out: Apple has already released a public beta for Lion.
Like iChat, OS X’s Messages works on the AIM, Yahoo, and Google Talk networks, so you can send messages to pals the same way you always did. But if your friends have a Mac, an iPhone or an iPad, you can send them iMessages–Apple’s free, industrial-strength text messages which support group messaging, photos and videos.
iMessages don’t involve traditional buddy lists: You just begin typing the recipient’s name, and Messages finds it among your OS X contacts. If the person you’re messaging has a Mac, an iPhone and an iPad, the iMessage will show up on all of them. You or your friend can even begin a conversation via Messages on one device, then switch to a different one in mid-discussion.

In this corner, weighing in at 50 million users, and five years’ growth under its belt, the filer from Manila-er, the forest that counts all its trees, the synchronized, syncopated master of all it shares, Droooooopbox! And, in this corner, the Mountain Viewmaster, the original 800-pound gorilla, the only thing that scares Steve Ballmer while he sleeps, a giant among search engines, Goooooooglllleee! When these online storage sluggers come out fighting, will there be a knockout, or just a bloody match?
Dropbox may have years on Google Drive, but it’s a relatively small firm, even though it stores massive amounts of data. Google is an old-timer by Web standards, but new to the storage world, having launched Google Drive after nearly six years of its rumored near-term arrival. Google has docs; Dropbox has moxy. Which fits your needs better?
Let’s put the two in the ring and see how they contend, shall we?The weigh-in
Google Drive and Dropbox offer the same basic features. Both services provide desktop synchronization of items in a single anointed folder across multiple computers using cloud storage to both copy and provide Web-accessible copies of files. Both require the installation of a background app to handle keeping files up to date among computers.
Google supports Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and 10.7 (Lion); Dropbox goes all the way back to 10.4 (Tiger) through 10.7. Google also offers support for Windows XP, Vista, and 7, but, strangely, no Linux support yet. Dropbox handles the same Windows versions plus Windows 2003, and two popular flavors of Linux (Ubuntu and Fedora Core).
Google includes 5GB of storage in free accounts, and outmuscles Dropbox there, which offers just 2GB for users who don’t pay. However, Dropbox has a nifty countermove: users who take advantage of its new image upload feature get 500MB added for the first photos uploaded, up to 3GB additional (a total of 5GB). Dropbox also adds 500MB of storage for each referred user who signs up free or paid service. Combined photo and referral storage for free accounts maxes out at 18GB (initial 2GB plus 16GB added).
If you need more storage, both services let you pay for it without taking you to the mat. Google charges from $2.49 for 25GB of storage up to $799.99 per month for 16TB of storage. (Gmail storage also increases from 10GB to 25GB.) Dropbox’s paid tiers for individuals are 50GB for $9.99 per month or $99 per year and 100GB for $19.99 per month or $199 per year. Paid accounts can add up to 32GB through referrals. Business service, called Dropbox for Teams, includes 1TB of storage and is $795 per year for five users; additional users are $125 per year and add 200GB per storage each.Round 1: Desktop sync
Google Drive's preferences allows selective syncing, and control over how Google Docs items are copied and editable. The most important part of these storage systems is how well the desktop applications let you completely forget about synchronization. You shouldn’t have to manage desktop sync, and both Google and Dropbox achieve this goal.
Both services set up a folder named after the service which is a duplicate of your storage on their central cloud-based systems, and which you can also view via their Web apps (see Round 2: Web Access). On every computer with which you have registered the same account, all files constantly update to the latest available version in the same folder hierarchy. Both Google and Dropbox let you selectively sync on each computer, too, choosing specific files to keep up to date.
Dropbox offers a contextual menu for selecting actions in the Finder for files and folders. All actions take a user to the Web site, however, to carry out the task.
In testing, Google and Dropbox seem to handle sync equally well. Both show the status of copying to let you know both on a file and folder level (via tiny symbols attached to icons) and through a system menu bar item whether copying is under way. Google’s only funny tic is that it uses its own horsey icons for native Google Docs formats, such as .gdoc for a word-processing file and .gsheet for spreadsheets. (Those files may only be edited in the Web app; they can be viewed but not edited offline in the Chrome browser.)
Dropbox offers contextual menu support that seems better than it is. Control-click any file or folder in the Dropbox folder, and (except in special Photos and Public folders) three items appear: Browse on Dropbox Website, Get Link, and Share This Folder (for folders) or View Previous Versions (for files). However, all of those links merely take you to the correct spot on Dropbox’s site, rather than carrying out an action on the Desktop. Google avoids that by omitting a contextual menu altogether.
If you have the need to sync exceedingly large files, Google caps files to 1GB, while Dropbox lets you fill your folder entirely with a single file up to your maximum storage size.
After the bell: Evenly matched, neither service even worked up much of a sweat at core competencies.Round 2: Web access
The Dropbox Web app offers fluid access to the synced copies of items in the Dropbox folder.Google should come out swinging in this round, because Google Drive is an evolution of its Google Docs Web apps, which set the standard for Web-based interaction. And, in fact, once Google Drive is available for your Google account and you enable it, the Docs tab disappears and is replaced with Drive. The approach remains generally the same, with a file list in the center, folders at left, and settings in the upper right.
You can preview several types of files in Google Drive’s Web app, including images, PDF files, Microsoft Office formats, plain text, and HTML, and edit any Google Docs files. Dropbox doesn’t preview or allow editing any file types. (You can preview publicly shared files, but not yet files you’re browsing in your own account; see Round 3: Sharing.)
Google Drive has a full-featured set of controls in the Web app, which is no surprise given its evolution from and integration with Google Docs.
Both firms put the app in Web app, though, by letting you drag and drop files right into the file list in a browser. Google requires either a Java add-on or the Chrome browser to add files, but adding files in this manner didn’t work during my testing. Dropbox also supposedly allows dragging folders, but all the folders I tried generated errors. You can also drag and drop files and folder in the file list to reorganize them. That’s a lot of footwork without any action.
Because both services require accounts for collaborative sharing (in which files and folders can be edited, and are synced instead of downloaded), the Web view is useful for colleagues who don’t want to download and install desktop sync to have access to needed files.
After the bell: Sluggers started out the round strong, but were staggering by the end. Chugging water before Round 3.Round 3: Sharing
The sharing options for Google Drive offers quite a bit of granularity, including what permissions each users have, and whether a file is private, obscured-but-public (not searchable from Google's index), or fully public (added to Google's index).
No person is an island, and most of us likely need to exchange files with others in a group or as a one-time forward. Instead of using email and remote file servers, sync providers can let you share privately or publicly. Both of our pugilists have a variety of sharing methods, including a recent revamp from Dropbox.
Right-click a file in Google Drive or click the drop-down menu next to a folder to reveal the share option. Google has three options for sharing: public (and thus searchable), link only (must have a link to access), and private. For each kind of sharing, and for individual users in a private item, an item or folder can be set to allow view only, comment only, or editing.
Dropbox separates out private and public sharing. Files and folders may be selected to share. Click a link icon to the right of any file or folder, and Dropbox creates a public link that can be used by any recipient or discovered that includes a view-only preview for many document and media types. Click the Sharing icon at the top of the file view to walk through an assistant to pick a folder (not single files) to share. Only Dropbox accountholders can access shared folders, and the contents of folders are always modifiable by all invitees.
Dropbox has a stripped-down approach to collaborative sharing, with every shared participant having full read, write, add, and delete privileges.
But, wait, Google has landed punches on Dropbox in the storage plexus. That’s gotta hurt. Google opted to exclude the size of shared files folders from your total storage quota. Dropbox, in contrast, adds the full size of all folders shared to the rest of your storage. It’s strange, because those files are only stored once, as Dropbox uses de-duplication on its servers, keeping a single master copy (plus backups) even for files that occur a million times in user folders and across non-shared accounts.
After the bell: Google landed body blows in this round, and Dropbox is staggering, but still on its feet.Round 4: Old versions and deleted files
In Dropbox, select a file in the Finder, choose Dropbox -> View Previous Versions from the contextual menu, and a list of revisions is available from which to pick a version to restore in the Web app.
Another advantage of saving to a folder that syncs all changes back to a central warehouse is that such a service can keep every update as a separately retrievable version. Such “version control” or “version tracking” can be useful when you need to scroll back through time and recover lost changes or even a lost file.
Right-click on a file (not a folder) in Dropbox, and choose Previous Versions. A list of versions in reverse chronological order, with the name of the person who edited a file (useful for shared files) as well as the ID of the computer on which that revision was made. You can click a Preview icon (magnifying glass) to download an earlier version, or click the radio button and then the Restore button to have the item in all sync folders replaced by the selected version.
Google Drive only provides version history for Google Docs files, and only within the Web app.
Dropbox starts doing a little close work here, chopping away at Google’s defense, in that Google Drive stores revisions, but has two separate ways to access them based on file type, and doesn’t allow a simple restore. Control-click a file and select Manage Revisions for a file that’s not using Google Docs. A display shows revisions, but you have to click an earlier version to download it: you can’t automatically replace the version in your sync folder with a previous revision. For a Google Docs file, click the file, and then from the menu, choose See Reversion History, which allows you to compare visually different revisions in the document window.
Google stores 30 days of versions and up to 100 revisions per file, counting storage against your quota, while Dropbox keeps unlimited revisions for up to 30 days and doesn’t calculate their size. (Revisions are only the incremental differences between two files, and may be tiny for text files and other documents.) Dropbox also offers Pack Rat, which stores unlimited versions forever, but only for paid individual ($40 per year extra) and business accounts (always on and included).
Oh, and Dropbox snuck in under Google’s guard, and got in two uppercuts over deleted files. First blow is that Google uses a Trash folder to manage deleted files, and counts them against your storage quota. And another to the chin: when the trash is emptied in Google Drive, the file is gone for good. Dropbox doesn’t count deleted files, and you can restore any deleted file from the previous 30 days with a free account. Pack Rat for paid accounts allows permanent retention of deleted files. (Deleting files forever requires a visit to the Web app, clicking to show deleted files, and then selecting those you want to purge.)
After the bell: Dropbox came back in slugging, and managing to stagger Google, which is looking like the fight is nearly gone before the final round.Round 5: Mobile apps
The iOS Dropbox app allows previewing a folder full of pictures, as well as uploading photos and video stored on the device.
Ringside pundits were expecting a K.O. by the final round, but Google managed to refresh itself between rounds—the company has a new iOS version of Google Drive alongside its existing Android one. Dropbox has long offered an iOS app, and has Android and BlackBerry versions as well. Both apps can view formats native on the iOS, like Word and PDF, and send files to other apps to view or edit.
But Dropbox lands blows against Google Drive, with its evolution of the app from a hard-to-use browser of files to one that allows the display of photo gallery, a simple tap to store locally, a single screen Open In option, and straightforward uploading methods for photos and videos from an iPhone. Google allows viewing and modifying settings for existing users of shared folders, but Dropbox offers a single tap way to create a public link for sharing.
After the bell: Judges award the bout to Dropbox on points. Google slumps in its corner saying, “I could have been a container.”The decision
Google Drive for iOS allows previewing documents and changing settings for existing users of shared folders, but lacks upload features, and requires extra screen views and taps to open in another app or store a local copy.
Google Drive has only two advantages over Dropbox: a greater variety of sharing options, and online editing of its own document types and previews of many others. But for core syncing and version control features, Dropbox comes out on top as the current all-round champion.
Editor's note: Updated on 7/5/12. This article originally omitted that Dropbox paid individual accounts must pay $40 per year to enable Pack Rat retention of deleted and older versions of files past 30 days. It also said that files in Dropbox could never be deleted permanently with Pack Rat enabled, but a manual operation via the Web app can drop files from Dropbox's backups.
