Wi-Fi is the de facto "seal of interoperability" for IEEE 802.11b-compliant excessive rate wireless LAN items. IEEE 802.11b is an business ordinary for wireless networking products, and Apple has been a pioneer in its adoption with the building of AirPort cards and base stations.
A member of WECA (the instant Ethernet Compatibility Alliance), Apple has obtained Wi-Fi certification for its AirPort products. besides the fact that children, besides the fact that Apple adopted 802.11b early and coined the time period AirPort, the expertise is via no skill particular to the Mac. Macs and PCs can talk during the equal entry features the usage of 802.11b-compliant instant playing cards and interfaces.
because the adoption of instant native area networks (WLANs) continues to grow, many companies are the usage of instant as a straightforward and cost-effective technique to expand the attain of community connectivity to company, brief places and legacy laptop programs as a way to avoid the excessive can charge of leasing strains or laying cable, according to Rob Karnbach, options line company manager, LAN Infrastructure Division, 3Com's business Networks company. 3Com's new 11Mbps wireless LAN Workgroup Bridge presents "quick and within your means" wired-to-wireless bridging for any Ethernet-enabled equipment to any Wi-Fi certified wireless LAN infrastructure, he spoke of.
by way of connecting the new 3Com instant Workgroup Bridge to a hub, agencies can gain instant connectivity for as much as 4 Ethernet-enabled instruments -- together with very own computer systems, printers, phones and web home equipment. The Workgroup Bridge offers groups a value-discount rates when in comparison to the use of general Wi-Fi licensed adapters to wirelessly connect each gadget, Karnbach said. through the use of the bridge with 3Com's NBX networked telephony equipment, agencies can deploy a completely managed voice and records community wirelessly, he introduced.
"This answer is greatest to educational institutions -- from k-12 to bigger schooling," Karnback noted. "The Workgroup Bridge enables faculties to join Macintosh computers and legacy PCs to the instant community. It also works neatly for transportable lecture rooms where effortless installation and suppleness are crucial."
The 3Com 11Mbps instant LAN Workgroup Bridge has an inside internet server designed to make it easy to configure, computer screen and manipulate in the community or remotely the usage of a web browser or other general-based equipment. To give protection to consumers' assistance, the 3Com Bridge helps each forty-bit Wired equal privateness (WEP) and 128-bit shared key encryption. The instant bridge is also clear to virtual deepest network protocols, the usage of a different encapsulation protocol to prevent conflicts with other tunneling protocols.
The 3Com eleven Mbps wireless LAN Workgroup Bridge offers a safety function known as Dynamic safety link. When used with 3Com's eleven Mbps wireless LAN solutions, Dynamic security link helps "username/password" security and 128-bit encryption. not like WEP, this protection mechanism gives every user a different key, and adjustments that key with every session, making it an awful lot harder to break, Karnback talked about.
interested users can order the 3Com eleven Mbps instant LAN Workgroup Bridge now -- it is anticipated to ship international in January. The product has an inventory rate of US$349.

WECA says the unified aid of this common will facilitate the quick deployment and adoption of those products to be sure international, broadband, wireless connectivity throughout the commercial enterprise, small office, public entry and residential markets.

EUC with HCI: Why It concerns
Datamation studies the Cisco certification software is expanding into the wireless area with the addition of two new specialist titles: Cisco instant LAN help specialist and Cisco instant LAN Design specialist:
"both titles show talents of radio applied sciences linked to WLAN 802.eleven requisites, WLAN topologies and purposes, product configuration, WLAN protection methods, simple antenna theory, and additional subject matters."
competitors is just getting more challenging for Cisco as it continues to extend in 30 or so new markets whereas trying to keep increase in its core routing and switching organizations.
In FY 2010, Cisco's fourth quarter effects have been disappointing, as turned into the enterprise's outlook for its current fiscal 2011 first quarter. on the equal time, competitors with predominant avid gamers in its core and adjacent markets is heating up.
Google's 10 toughest competitors
Which gamers? below is our checklist of Cisco's 10 toughest competitors in a handful of its key markets, reminiscent of video, information middle and collaboration.
Cisco vs. Juniper
Juniper took one-third of Cisco's share in core routing shortly after coming onto the scene in 1997. The enterprise remains Cisco's one and handiest rival in core internet routing with a 30% share of the $643 million market within the 2nd quarter, in line with Dell'Oro community. And the two corporations seek to one up every other with every announcement of a much better speed, better density gadget. current entries during this race are Cisco's currently-introduced CRS-three and Juniper's 250Gbps per slot ASICs for its T sequence systems.
Juniper is also Cisco's closest competitor in a number of protection markets, including the $2 billion VPN hardware and utility market, and within the $7 billion universal security market, which contains firewalls, VPNs, unified risk management and intrusion detection and prevention systems, in keeping with IDC. Juniper gained a large presence in firewall/VPN programs with its 2004 acquisition of NetScreen.
Cisco vs. Alcatel-Lucent
Juniper is also an adversary in provider side routing but so too is Alcatel-Lucent. Alcatel-Lucent and Juniper take turns trading the No. 2 place in area routing, the place Ethernet carrier delivery is a key requirement for applications akin to IPTV, Ethernet VPNs and mobile backhaul. both businesses are concentrated on Cisco's aged 7600 sequence and new ASR 9000 routers as their key aggressive pursuits. Cisco's capabilities is its monstrous installed base – 43% of the $1.34 billion market within the second quarter, in line with Dell'Oro. Alcatel-Lucent's challenging that and looking to develop past its 19% share with terabit ASICs for its carrier Router 7750 optimized for site visitors administration and processing of IPTV, WebTV, cellular backhaul and company VPN site visitors; and 100Gbps Ethernet interfaces for the aspect router.
prior this month, Alcatel-Lucent even made some noise within the business switching market with a 5Tbps OmniSwitch with 10/40/100G Ethernet aid that takes goal at the business core – and Cisco.
Cisco vs. HP
With a 72% share of the $16 billion market in 2009, Cisco is dominant in Ethernet switching. it could be hard to pinpoint a rival in a market where Cisco is almost unmatched. Yet HP is most active and vocal in taking up Cisco in enterprise switching. At 10% share, HP is the No. 2 dealer, thanks in enormous half to its $2.7 billion acquisition of 3Com earlier this 12 months.
It verbally challenges Cisco each probability it gets at trade indicates and conferences. regardless of its dominant lead, Cisco isn't standing pat. The company continues to unveil new platforms and raise latest ones, all optimized for three key strategic markets: video, virtualization and collaboration.
Former partners HP and Cisco are also fitting bitter facts center rivals. HP might also have drawn first blood by means of pledging to revive its ProCurve networking division after Mark Hurd grew to become CEO in 2007. Then Cisco invaded HP's, and IBM's, common turf with the aid of popping out with its own blade and rack mount data core servers. HP spoke back by using acquiring 3Com to raise its change market share and standard networking portfolio, after which bashing Cisco at each public possibility. eventually, Cisco vanquished HP as a reseller; and HP banished Cisco from its statistics centers.
Cisco vs. Aruba
similar to switching, Cisco has a detailed-to-dominant place in instant LANs with a 58% share of the $1.6 billion market in 2009. Aruba's subsequent with 9%. although that gap is mammoth, Aruba offers Cisco all it might probably tackle in North the us sales, where it had a more robust percent penetration in the U.S. than Cisco had within the 2d quarter of this year. Aruba is notably mighty in larger schooling, healthcare and other business verticals, and is outpacing Cisco in 802.11n penetration, in response to Dell'Oro community. And over the final 4 quarters, Aruba's market share has grown from 8.7% to eleven.9% while Cisco's has declined from 60.7% to fifty four.8%. not that Aruba is the only beneficiary of that decline but it undoubtedly played a number one role.
however Cisco lately got here out with an "entry stage" 802.11n access element that could support enhance its share of that certain market. And it took pains to take the ache out of 11n deployments.
meanwhile Aruba's been lining up correct-shelf OEM partners, like Dell; and expanding into new markets through acquisition.
Cisco vs. Polycom
Cisco's all in favour of video, noting – by its personal research -- that it's going to exceed ninety one% of international purchaser IP traffic by 2014.this will force sales of switches and routers on the again end of provider company networks to address all that hefty site visitors. On the entrance end? Cisco rolled out TelePresence virtual conferencing programs for the business and home, and purchased both Pure Digital, the maker of Flip pocket video cameras, and Polycom rival Tandberg to fill out the low-end and mid-range business videoconferencing portfolio. Tandberg turned into the market chief on videoconeferencing, so now Cisco is with a roughly 40% share of a $2 billion market, in accordance with Wainhouse analysis.
Polycom is rarely taking this mendacity down: it aligned itself with Cisco opponents IBM and Juniper to drive sales of its personal videoconferencing techniques along with IBM servers and storage techniques, and Juniper routers.
Productwise, Cisco and Polycom fit up pretty evenly, with convention room- and office-sized, and private Telepresence and videoconferencing methods, and linked machine and applications. Cisco currently debuted a house TelePresence equipment referred to as Umi to work with consumer HDTVs however its cost is being criticized. can you see me now?
Cisco vs. Avaya
Unified communications and collaboration are hot target markets for Cisco, possibly the most strategic after its core routing and switching organizations. however while Cisco plays in scores of markets with an additional 30 or so adjacent ones in its attractions, Avaya's sole raison d’etre is UC and collaboration. certainly, Avaya and Cisco are Nos. 1 and a pair of in commercial enterprise telephony, in accordance with Dell'Oro group, with 17% and 14.6% shares, respectively, of the $12 billion market in 2009. The agencies had been early entrants and decade-long rivals in IP PBXs and handsets.
essentially the most contemporary battlefield for the two is pill computer systems tailor-made primarily for business collaboration and unified communications. Avaya added Flare closing month, a cellular/dockable 11.6-inch touchscreen pill that supports hi-def video, and Avaya's unified communications utility for pulling collectively advert hoc meetings, including hi-def conferences. Cisco's Cius is a 7-inch dockable or cell touchscreen that additionally helps Cisco's unified communications application and telepresence systems. each Cius and Flare run the Android operating equipment which allows both to assist a wealth of latest or without difficulty developed functions. Flare demonstrates that Avaya will no longer take kindly to any share positive factors in its one and handiest market from a decided and aggressive behemoth that performs in tens of others.
Cisco vs. Microsoft
Microsoft and Cisco are in that gray enviornment known as "coopetition." They compete and collaborate on unified communications. After Microsoft entered into the creative Communications Alliance with Nortel in 2006, Microsoft and Cisco mentioned their intentions to continue working collectively as well as compete.
but after Nortel imploded and the ICA died, Microsoft took its UC partnership to Cisco's chief switching and records core rival HP. The businesses pledged to fund the effort with $a hundred and eighty million and announced it to the realm all the way through an HP keynote at the Interop conference within the spring of 2009. As part of the partnership, both will collaborate on product construction round Microsoft's SharePoint, alternate, OCS and HP's ProCurve networking hardware, as well as interoperability between OCS conferencing capabilities and HP's Halo Telepresence audio visual and conferencing know-how.
Cisco vs. determine element
Cisco is much and away the main seller within the $7 billion normal network security market – which comprises firewall/VPN, unified threat administration, intrusion detection and prevention, and standalone VPNs, according to IDC. The enterprise leads in each and every market except for unified threat management. however in the greatest sub-segment – the $2.6 billion firewall/VPN hardware and software market – CheckPoint isn't any.2.
CheckPoint is a pioneer in stateful inspection firewalls and, like Avaya and unified communications, is focused completely on the protection business with products dedicated to firewalling, VPNs, unified danger administration and intrusion prevention. Cisco also has standalone home equipment committed for these projects, but also integrates lots of these capabilities into the operating equipment utility of its routers and switches, which are ubiquitous during the internet and enterprise networks.
Cisco vs. IBM
IBM has been getting tighter with Cisco opponents Juniper and Brocade ever given that Cisco set its attractions on facts center servers and virtualization, an opportunity that Cisco says is $350 billion yearly. IBM is OEMing switches and routers from each companies and, notwithstanding much quieter than HP, distancing itself from Cisco at each possibility.
IBM received blade change expert BLADE community technologies which competes with Cisco for information core switching mind- and market share; and next 12 months will unveil the "Stratus" information middle material architecture with Juniper to compete at once with Cisco's Unified cloth for the facts core.
Cisco rolled out the so-called Unified Computing gadget a yr-and-a-half ago, which is supposed to re-architect legacy facts facilities by consolidating servers, switching, virtualization and storage entry. Cisco has offered united statesto 1,seven hundred valued clientele so far. Cisco also rolled out Ethernet switches committed to facts middle fabric switching two years in the past with the Nexus line. Nexus is now on an annualized run cost of $2 billion. over the last two years, Cisco has also enhanced current Catalyst switches with 10G modules and virtualization guide for data middle purposes, and has tightly aligned itself with storage titan EMC and virtualization utility specialist VMware to speed up the adoption of Cisco products into the statistics core.
Cisco vs. Brocade
Brocade and Cisco are 1 and a couple of, respectively, in Fibre Channel storage-enviornment networks. Brocade has the lion's share of the Fibre Channel SAN market at sixty four% and Cisco's trying to take the business to Fibre Channel-over-Ethernet, a converged SAN/LAN switching textile stylish on Ethernet switches – a neighborhood the place Cisco is dominant.
Brocade's not absolutely resisting the circulation to Ethernet: the enterprise acquired Cisco competitor Foundry Networks for Ethernet switching in order to combine its own FCoE development and converged facts middle textile. Brocade also these days proposed a unified facts center fabric structure, referred to as Brocade One, as an alternative to these from Cisco and IBM/Juniper.
having said that, Brocade continues to invest in, strengthen and aggressively market its native Fibre Channel know-how to its deep installed base and cash cow. Cisco entered the Fibre Channel SAN company in 2002 and, after at the start taking half of the modular SAN change market in 2007, has fallen to 36% share of the $843 million market in 2009, according to Dell'Oro. In that point, Brocade's share rose from 50% in 2007 to its existing sixty four%, based on Dell'Oro.join the community World communities on facebook and LinkedIn to touch upon themes which are correct of intellect.

Cisco is changing its DNA from a hardware company to a software, service-centric leader with the launch of its new Digital Network Architecture on Wednesday, setting the stage for a new enterprise networking sales motion for its 70,000 channel partners.
"For Cisco, who had really a consistent approach for networking for the better part of 25 years or longer, this is a departure from a hardware-centric model," said Brian Ortbals, vice president of Advanced Technology at World Wide Technology, a St. Louis-based solution provider and Cisco Gold partner ranked No. 11 in CRN's 2015 Solution Provider 500 list. "This is going to create such huge services opportunity for partners, and it's going to reinforce the value of Cisco software proposition and leadership in that space."
Robert Soderbery, senior vice president of Cisco's Enterprise Products and Solutions, said every Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) will eventually become an expert at selling the new digital architecture.
[Related: CRN's Cisco Partner Summit 2016 Coverage ]
"We are absolutely going to change the DNA of the channel," said Soderbery, in an interview with CRN.
Digital Network Architecture (DNA) is an open, software-driven, service-centric solution based on automation, virtualization, analytics, managed services and open APIs that is aimed at enabling digital business. DNA is delivered within the Cisco One Software family and includes a new automation platform and applications, an array of cloud-based management services, and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) targeting the enterprise.
The San Jose, Calif.-based networking giant has been lecturing for years about digitization and businesses transitioning to the digital age. DNA appears to be Cisco's answer to digitization and shedding the notion that Cisco is still a hardware-centric company, according to WWT's Ortbals.
With DNA, Ortbals said, Cisco has recognized what customers are demanding in the market.
"Customers are looking for new methods to be able to create simplicity in management to deliver services more quickly, to create more automation and ultimately one of the best upsides with the overall model is the ability to gain insight and manage more readily the security compliance of an environment," said Ortbals.
DNA also opens the door for new opportunities involving the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) market, which WWT is having more conversations about in 2016, he said.
"IoT creates new network traffic demand and new opportunities to do analytics at the edge, and the legacy model is not [conducive] to those types of customer requirements today, at least not easily. So they're allowing for new technologies to help provide solutions to those changing customer requirements," Ortbals said.
New technology inside DNA unveiled at Cisco Partner Summit in San Diego on Wednesday includes an automation platform, APIC-EM, which consists of a new version of Cisco's enterprise controller retooled for greater scale and resiliency, with a broad set of network services and device support. The platform has been deployed in more than 160 customer environments running up to 4,000 devices from a single instance, according to Cisco.
The digital architecture also consists of policy services including an enhanced Cisco Intelligent WAN (IWAN) and a new Easy Quality of Service (QoS) that enables the network to update QoS settings consistently across the network in real time. Another service is Plug and Play, a cloud-based deployment service that sits on routers and switches talking directly to the network controller, which reduces deployment time from weeks to days, according to Soderbery.
"We believe automation and APIC-EM is so compelling, we want every customer and ever partner to take advantage of it. So we're distributing that completely free -- the platform and the base automation services are free," said Soderbery.
Cisco also revealed Enterprise NFV, which decouples hardware from software. Cisco's NFV provides a full software stack including the virtualization infrastructure software, the virtualized network functions (VNFs) and orchestration services to enable branch office service virtualization. The infrastructure software can be hosted on Cisco UCS (Unified Computing System) and eventually for x86 hardware. VNFs include routing, firewall, WAN optimization and wireless LAN services, and will be expanded to additional Cisco and third-party VNFs.
"Being able to virtualize your functions and run them in the cloud or on industry-standard hardware platforms has really been a service provider conversation -- we're now making it an enterprise conversation," said Soderbery. "Its an enterprise NFV as a package solution for enterprises that want of take advantage of NFV."
The final new technology launched around DNA is CMX (Connected Mobile Experiences) Cloud, a cloud-based management service for Cisco wireless infrastructures that allows customers to take advantage of location and presence analytics to provide businesses with insights and personalized engagement.
Nirav Sheth, senior director for Cisco's Americas Partner Organization, said DNA is giving channel partners the tools to become a digital leader for customers and a way to accelerate an install-based refresh. He said Cisco is also driving closer alignment between its internal sales teams and partners around DNA.
"Looking holistically, it's an opportunity for our partners to go deeper with their customers, to have more upfront professional services, there's recurring revenue opportunities and an opportunity for our partners to accelerate because they're going to be in lockstep with their Cisco sales team," said Sheth, in an interview with CRN.
DNA also complements Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) technology by extending the policy-driven approach and software strategy throughout the entire network -- from the campus to the branch, wired to wireless, and the core to the edge, said Soderbery.
Worldwide spending on digital transformation technologies will grow to $2.1 trillion in 2019, with a CAGR of 17 percent, according to a recent report by market researcher IDC. Cisco plans to put its channel community on the front end of the transformation with DNA, said Soderbery.
"Partners are moving to the line of business or the digital conversation. … They're not just technology providers, but solution providers for managed services," said Soderbery. "I can't imagine anyone being able to compete with us."
Cisco is changing its certification strategy to have more focus around DNA in order to make every CCIE and CCNA a software specialist. DNA will be included in many Cisco incentive programs including VIP (Value Incentive Program), according to the company.
"We fully expect that every single partner driving enterprise networking is going to be on this DNA journey with us," said Sheth.
U.S. Department of Defense tactical networking and command post programs widely acknowledge the critical need to improve mobility. The current state-of-the-art for tent-based command posts requires hours of setup, which includes thousands of feet of copper wiring that delay network availability, resulting in a dangerous lack of situational awareness for commanders.
Currently, troops who jump from one location to another typically do so in phases. Tent infrastructure, generators, network servers and satellite links going up first followed by the running of cables to provide the local area network (LAN) command post support. This process translates to long delays in the availability of command-and-control (C2) information services, which can in turn lead to increased vulnerability of people and their systems.
Small form factor, rugged equipment required for mobility
Defensive postures of the past operated in a much more stationary battlefield environment and it was simply assumed that communications would be limited as war fighters moved from position to position. Today, technology advancements by adversaries demand that war fighters have the same secure communications experience while on the move as they do at-the-halt. Communications solutions must be delivered in a smaller form factor — whether to fit in a backpack of a dismounted soldier or integrated into Humvee.
And, the fight does not stop just because you are moving. Not only do dismounted soldiers need communications mobility, but so does the network infrastructure to support them. This is why defense forces require networking on-the-move (NOTM) capabilities. On-the-move means communications and network infrastructure packaged into a small form factor (SFF) ruggedized to adapt to mobility over any terrain and are reliable in the face of unanticipated adverse conditions.
Data-center style 19” rack mount equipment is becoming obsolete as new generations of equipment designed for tactical/expeditionary use become available with enterprise-grade networking and security technologies. Complete suites of virtualized cybersecurity, encryption, network access control, and key management are now available in small form factor for Wi-Fi and LTE access in the tactical environment.
Higher reliance on controlled unclassified information transport for tactical data
The majority of information systems war fighters use in theater provide access to controlled unclassified information (CUI) previously known as sensitive but unclassified (SBU). The problem is significant portions of critical tactical information is classified, causing access challenges for the majority of war fighters who are not cleared for access to secret information. The DoD is working on policies and procedures to downscope certain types (or portions) of classified information in an effort to expand access by policy.

Organizations will have better situational awareness when more tactical information is available to uncleared war fighters. It will enable entirely new modes of communication when paired with widespread wireless access technologies at the edge of the network. Maneuvers and tactics will improve.
Security for wireless: Beyond your local electronics superstore
A significant inhibitor of the widespread deployment of Wi-Fi and LTE in the tactical setting has been the complex and extensive security requirements associated with transmitting information over commercial radio types. Wireless tactical CUI networks are subject to complex DoD security regulations similar to those in the enterprise. The two primary regulations are DoDI 8420.01 (for CUI Wi-Fi) and the DISA Remote Teleworker/VPN guidelines and security technical implementation guides (STIGs).
DoDI 8420.01 specifically deals with the component selection, certification, and configuration requirements for Wi-Fi components. The DISA VPN STIGs cover the requirements for encryption and security over other untrusted networks including LTE, commercial ISPs, or non-government owned Wi-Fi (e.g., hotel and coffee shop Wi-Fi).
At a high level, transmitting CUI over these types of networks must use equipment and infrastructure that conform to these DoD requirements. A summary of key components required under these guidelines include:
In the past, deploying the suite of technology above in a tactical setting was prohibitively large in size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-c), as well as overwhelming the limited supply of advanced IT operators in the field. However, new solutions available today have overcome these challenges through the use of small form factor equipment.
Network virtualized DoD-ready secure wireless on small form factor
A key innovation adopted from enterprise best practices is the incorporation of server virtualization. This technology initially enabled enterprises to run multiple server software packages on a single hardware server platform. It quickly inspired network and cybersecurity companies to make their technology available on virtualized appliances. The result is that entire suites of wireless and cybersecurity technologies such as the ones listed above may be installed and run on a single server.
Virtualization combined with increasingly powerful server systems available in small form factor rugged packages delivers entire new suites of virtualized DoD-ready wireless and cybersecurity solutions in systems as small as a paperback book weighing under 3 pounds.
The last piece of the puzzle: Manageability of WLAN and cyber at the edge
One complexity remains in the deployment of DoD-ready tactical Wi-Fi and LTE: manageability. The new suites of integrated technology above will be composed of heterogeneous technology in the form of software and virtualized network functions from multiple commercial vendors. The solution will be complex with many feature sets to meet interoperability and cybersecurity requirements for DoD systems. It will require a level of training and expertise for operation and maintenance that far exceeds available specialists.
To address this final issue, organizations should consider emerging software management technology that consolidates the management plane of these systems into a “single pane of glass” regardless of the type of underlying technology or vendor. The most advanced software solutions today can run in hybrid or remote modes to further address the lack of trained specialists in the field. The management system can provide full control at remote, higher-echelons that can be staffed with a limited number of advanced technical experts, providing assistance across large numbers of remote, fielded systems.
2019, the year of wireless CUI?
CUI is top of mind across DoD right now to shore up information security. In October 2018, then-Secretary of Defense Mattis issued a memorandum establishing the “Protecting Critical Technology Task Force.” The memo, undertaken in response to the loss of CUI, notably includes defense contractors, as it is these contractor-owned information systems used for classified and controlled unclassified information. The memo states that, “Working with our partners in the defense industry and research enterprise, we must ensure the integrity and security of our classified information, CUI, and key data.”
It is unsurprising that attention has turned to tactical settings where secure transmission of information over Wi-Fi and LTE is critical to supporting war-fighter mobility. The confluence of technology advances and use cases described above indicate the time is right to move to widespread adoption of wireless LAN technologies for DoD. There is a critical need to improve mobility, and the wireless, cybersecurity and server, and communications management technologies have advanced to the point of being ready to meet the need.
