IBM is set to launch a analysis center within the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo concentrated on construction of options around synthetic intelligence.
The AI middle will be the first Latin American institution of IBM's AI Horizons network. It will be collectively run via the enterprise and the São Paulo analysis foundation (FAPESP) to pursue "a disruptive research software", with the competencies to "promote paradigm shifts in AI."
The mission for the core can be to create deeper abilities across the know-how and to improve applications that may also be of benefit to the industry. Sectors in an effort to doubtlessly improvement from the analysis core include agribusiness, financial services and healthcare.
"In its well-nigh 10-12 months heritage, IBM Brazil's research laboratory has been on the forefront of advances in AI research and collaborates with the expertise ecosystem within the country, promotion integration amongst researchers, students, groups and groups," says Ulysses Mello, director at IBM analysis Brazil.
"We intend to work on a fair superior collaboration with researchers from everywhere, promotion skills switch to clear up existing and valuable complications of our society."
Over the next ten years, the facility acquire $20 million in funding, coming from each businesses and academic companies that may also join the initiative as partners.
a young has been launched via FAPESP to attract companions for the center. Proposals could be submitted by way of particular person research corporations or consortia led via research agencies affiliated to universities or analysis institutes in the state of São Paulo.
Areas the new middle is attracted to consist of natural Language Processing and deep learning, industrial functions for AI and the acceleration of AI-primarily based programs that can method analyzing, processing and interacting in Portuguese. it's expected that the chosen initiatives should be introduced in April.
based on the analysis foundation, teams worried with the center may still be sufficiently professional and capable of carry out research that may stand out internationally and also interact with the education sector.
The center's scope will cover tasks with the general public and privates sectors and also facilitate the introduction of new businesses that should be capable of turn the consequences of the research into products and services.
Free software will keep psychology from the Replication disaster.
"examine exhibits that loads of psychology research in reality is barely 'psycho-babble'".—The unbiased.
Psychology changed forever on the August 27, 2015. For the previous 4 years, the 270 psychologists of the Open Science Collaboration had been quietly re-running 100 published psychology experiments. Now, ultimately, they were able to share their findings. The consequences were surprising. under half of the re-run experiments had labored.
When someone tries to re-run an scan, and it does not work, we call this a failure to copy. Scientists had time-honored about screw ups to copy for a while, nevertheless it become simplest somewhat currently that the extent of the issue grew to be apparent. Now, a virtually existential disaster loomed. That disaster even received a reputation: the Replication crisis. quickly, people began asking the same questions about other areas of science. frequently, they obtained identical solutions. most effective half of effects in economics replicated. In pre-scientific cancer studies, it changed into worse; simplest 11% replicated.Open Science
clearly, whatever thing needed to be achieved. One choice would were to conclude that psychology, economics and ingredients of drugs could not be studied scientifically. perhaps those constituents of the universe had been no longer lawful in any significant method? if so, you isn't shocked if two researchers did the same factor and acquired diverse consequences.
however, perhaps diverse researchers got distinctive outcomes as a result of they have been doing different things. In most circumstances, it wasn't possible to tell no matter if you'd run the test the exact same means because the common authors. This turned into because all you needed to go on became the journal article—a short summary of the strategies used and results got. in case you desired more aspect, you might, in conception, request it from the authors. however, we might already typical for a decade that this approach turned into seriously broken—in about 70% of circumstances, information requests ended in failure.
Even when the authors despatched you their records, it regularly failed to support that a great deal. one of the vital general complications changed into that in the event you re-analysed their facts, you ended up with distinct solutions to it! This became out to be fairly usual, because most descriptions of facts analyses supplied in journal articles are incomplete and ambiguous. What you actually vital became the normal authors' source code—an unambiguous and complete record of every records processing step they took, from the raw facts info, to the graphs and records in the closing record. In Psychology in 2015, you pretty much never might get this.
in case you did eventually have the ability to replicate the authors' evaluation, may you be assured that their results had been actual? no longer necessarily. most likely they proven handiest just a few americans, who have been no longer specifically representative of the inhabitants as an entire. during this case, you might wish to re-run the experiment yourself, testing much more people. Or possibly the problem changed into no longer with their analysis, or their facts, however with the formulation in which they gathered their records. For the final 20 years, psychology experiments generally have worried desktop-based checking out. So, for terribly many experiments, there's an entire and unambiguous specification of the methods used—the supply code for the testing application. but in 2015, this pretty much not ever was publicly available both.
In different phrases, psychology analysis at first of the Replication disaster was like closed-source application. You had to take the authors' conclusions thoroughly on trust, within the same way you must believe that closed-supply application performs as described. There practically was no solution to audit analysis accurately, since you couldn't access the source code on which the experiment became based—the checking out utility, the uncooked facts and the evaluation scripts.
A growing variety of scientists felt this needed to alternate. The year earlier than, in 2014, I had examine Stephen Levy's Hackers, and from there, I went on to read greater about Richard Stallman, Eric S. Raymond and Linus Torvalds. For me, it changed into a revelation. The Free and Open source utility group, I felt, confirmed how science may well be diverse. The pervasiveness of Linux confirmed that tens of heaps of people with distinctive views and goals might collaborate on a complex mission for the usual first rate. just as critical, they may achieve this devoid of necessarily even having to love each other all of the time. That turned into good news for science. Discussions between lecturers can get...neatly, let's just say "heated".
So, within the equal manner that computing has its advocates of open-source application, psychology and other sciences all started gaining advocates for Open Science. The phrase Open Science had been coined back in 1998 by way of Steve Mann, however once the Replication crisis hit psychology, a lot more of us all started to sit down up and take note. Early on, the Centre for Open Science, a non-earnings company started in 2013, had set up the Open Science Framework (OSF). The OSF is a web-primarily based public repository for experiment-linked statistics and code. or not it's built absolutely from free and open-supply utility.
As recognition of the Replication disaster grew, peer reviewers all started insisting that records and code be made publicly available. Peer overview in research is somewhat like a code evaluation in IT. Scientists send their articles to a journal for consideration. The journal sends the article out to experts in the box for comment, and the work is authorised for ebook simplest when the journal editor thinks these feedback had been appropriately addressed. In 2015, Richard Morey and colleagues began the Peer Reviewers' Openness Initiative, a statement that they might now not advocate any paper for book until it met definite basic necessities of open science. within three years, more than 500 peer reviewers in psychology had signed that statement.Open structures and R
there is nonetheless one fundamental difficulty to remedy. Publishing your scientific supply code is simple for open science, nevertheless it's not satisfactory. For thoroughly open science, you also want the structures on which that code runs to be open. with out open structures, the future usability of open-source code is in danger. for example, there changed into a time when many experiments in psychology had been written in Microsoft visual primary 6 or in Hypercard. both were closed-source structures, and neither are now supported by means of their companies. It just isn't perfect to have the everlasting archival records of science rendered unusable during this way. Equally, or not it's slim sort of Open Science, if best people who can manage to pay for to buy a selected piece of proprietary software are in a position to access it. All journal articles posted in psychology on account that around 1997 are in PDF layout. educational libraries would not tolerate these archival info being in a proprietary layout comparable to DOCX. we will and must follow the same requisites of openness to the structures on which we base our research.
Psychology has a long history of the usage of closed-supply structures, possibly most exceptionally the proprietary data evaluation application SPSS. SPSS initially changed into launched in 1968, and it changed into obtained with the aid of IBM in 2010. Bizarrely, SPSS is any such closed platform, present versions can not even open SPSS output information in the event that they were generated before 2007! even though it's still probably the most used information analysis utility in psychology, its use has been declining steeply on account that 2009. What's been taking over the slack?
In tremendous half, it be R. R is a GNU mission, and so it be free software launched beneath the GNU common Public Licence. it works great beneath Linux, however it also works simply satisfactory on home windows and Mac OS too. R is a very long-standing mission with amazing group support. R is also supported with the aid of principal tech organizations, including Microsoft, who preserve the Microsoft R application network.
R is an implementation of the statistical language S, developed at Bell Labs almost immediately after UNIX, and inspired by using Scheme (a dialect of Lisp). within the Nineties, Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman, on the tuition of Auckland, began to enhance R as an open-source implementation of S. R reached edition 1.0 in 2000. In 2004, the R basis released R 2.0 and began its annual overseas convention: _useR!_. In 2009, R got its personal committed journal (The R Journal). In 2011, RStudio launched a computing device and internet-primarily based IDE for R. using R via RStudio is the finest option for most new clients, although it also works well with Emacs and Vim. The present foremost free up of R landed in 2013, and there are element releases about each six months.
I first begun the usage of R, on a Mac, in 2012. That became two years earlier than i might heard of the idea of Free software, and it became about three years earlier than I ran Linux always. So, my option to circulation from SPSS to R changed into not on philosophical grounds. It additionally became before the Replication disaster, so I failed to change for Open Science reasons either. I started using R because it became just enhanced than SPSS—plenty more suitable. Scientists spend round eighty% of their analysis time on pre-processing—getting the statistics into a structure the place they could observe statistical assessments. R is beautifully first rate at pre-processing, and or not it's actually much more suitable than the most usual option in psychology, which is to pre-procedure in Microsoft Excel. records processing in Excel is infamously error-susceptible. as an example, one in five experiments in genetics have been screwed up by means of Excel. one more instance: the case for the united kingdom govt's policy of financial austerity was in accordance with an Excel screw up.
one more wonderful reason for the use of R is that each one analyses take the variety of scripts. So, when you've got completed your analysis completely in R, you have already got a full, reproducible record of your evaluation direction. any individual with an online connection can down load R and reproduce your analysis the use of your script. This capability we will achieve the aim of wholly open, reproducible science truly readily with R. This contrasts with the way psychologists specifically use SPSS, which is thru a point-and-click interface. or not it's a fairly standard experience that scientists struggle to breed their own SPSS-primarily based evaluation after a 3-month delay. I struggled with this problem myself for years. although i used to be at all times able to reproduce my own analyses eventually, it frequently took as lengthy to achieve this because it had the first time round. because I moved to R, reproducing my own analyses has turn into as simple as re-running the R script. It additionally ability that now each member of my lab and any person else I work with can share and audit each different's analyses with ease. in lots of cases, that audit procedure radically improves the analysis.
a 3rd thing that makes R so brilliant is that the core language is supplemented through greater than 13,000 applications mirrored worldwide on the complete R Archive community (CRAN). each evaluation or graph that you can suppose of is obtainable as a free utility equipment on CRAN. there is even a equipment to draw graphs within the fashion of the xkcd cartoons or in the shade schemes of Wes Anderson films! in fact, or not it's so comprehensive, in 2013 the authors of SPSS provided users with the potential to load R packages within SPSS. Their in-condominium team simply could not sustain with the breadth and depth of evaluation strategies obtainable in R.
R's ability to keep up with the newest options in facts evaluation has been critical in addressing the Replication disaster. here is because one of the vital causes of the disaster turned into psychology's reliance on out-dated and easily misinterpreted statistical thoughts. together, those concepts are known as Null hypothesis value trying out, and that they have been developed in the early 20th century before the introduction of low cost, high-vigor computing. today, we increasingly use more computationally intensive but enhanced strategies, in keeping with Bayes theorem and Monte Carlo strategies. New techniques develop into attainable in R years before they're in SPSS. for instance, in 2010, Jon Kruschke published a textbook on how to do Bayesian evaluation in R. It wasn't except 2017 that SPSS supported Bayesian analyses.teaching R
For greater than twenty years, instructing facts in psychology has been synonymous with educating people the way to use SPSS. despite the fact, right through the closing few years, a number of universities have switched to R, and a lot of greater are seeing that it. One concern about this exchange became that psychology college students would find R more durable to be taught than SPSS, and that they would like it less. This turns out to be incorrect. In pioneering work by using Dale Barr and colleagues at Glasgow school, psychology undergraduates have been taught each SPSS and R. They then bought to choose which software to use of their closing assessments. around two-thirds of the students chose R. those that chose R additionally scored greater on the exam. They also scored reduce on a common measure of records anxiety. At Plymouth university, new entrants to our Psychology levels are actually simply taught R, with SPSS faraway from the curriculum totally. we have now seen an increase in what our students can achieve in records, while preserving excessive tiers of pupil satisfaction.
one of the crucial side benefits of this trade, for the R challenge, is that psychologists are usually rather good at writing documentation. Andy container's textbook, Discovering records, tons-praised with the aid of Psychology undergraduates, has had an R edition considering that 2012. greater recently, academics have started establishing teaching materials which are as open as R is. as an example, my own instructing substances, research strategies in R, aimed at first-12 months psychology undergraduates, are available beneath a creative Commons Licence. simply adequate R, written by using Ben Whalley and geared toward postgraduate college students, is purchasable under the same licence.Open Science in R: an illustration
In my lab at Plymouth tuition, we work on the psychology of studying, reminiscence and choice making. in lots of circumstances, the theories we are testing are expressed in the sort of computer models. as an example, one of the crucial basic theories of how we learn to community objects into categories (canines, cats, bagels and so forth) is referred to as ALCOVE. This thought takes the sort of a neural community model, which makes predictions about how people will classify objects. We compare these predictions to facts from actual people making those selections and consider the model on that groundwork.
traditionally, this computational modelling facet to psychology has been fairly closed-supply. These models of the mind, which might be moderately complicated courses, customarily are released handiest as a set of mathematical equations with some explanatory text. The code required to reproduce the consequences pronounced is seldom thoroughly posted. The outcomes is that it will possibly take a number of days to several months to breed the results of those computing device models. The period of time this wastes is giant.
beginning in 2016, our lab determined to do something about this challenge. chiefly, we launched an R kit referred to as catlearn, brief for fashions of CATegorization and getting to know. in the existing edition, launched in July 2018, we now have implemented nine diverse models. like several R programs, the code is open source. The equipment also contains archives of the total code for simulations of selected experiments and the records units for those experiments. We're beginning to build a neighborhood around the globe, with people in the u . s . a ., UK, Germany and Switzerland all having contributed code. or not it's a really wonderful time, and that i'm eager for the free up of version 0.7 later this 12 months. if you need to make a contribution, we'd like to hear from you—we desperately want more first rate programmers. Prior event of psychology is not simple.A final idea
The Replication disaster might were one of the crucial most efficient things ever to occur to psychology. It grew to be a catalyst for a whole lot-mandatory change to our scientific tactics. If we can build 21st-century psychology on the concepts of Open Science, I believe top notch and enduring discoveries wait for us. those future successes will owe a great deal to the pioneering illustration of the Free and Open-supply software community. Thanks in increase, Linux Journal readers!materials

IRAP January 1997 Status ReportNEW PROJECTS UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN INSTRUCTIONAL ENVIRONMENT (UMIE)
A role for UMIE technical lead has been posted. Once hired, this person will work with other technical staff and service providers on campus, design the UMIE infrastructure, and work with ITD operations to specify the operational needs of UMIE.
During phase 1 of the UMIE project, we are going to be working on 5 sub-projects. We are moving ahead on implementation of three of them, while doing planning for the others.
Course home page templates:
Mike Nowak is planning to meet with Carol Kamm (ITD Web Services), Brian Vaughan, and Ellen Vaughan to coordinate this project with work already done for U-M Online.
University Course Catalog:
A timeline for this project has been developed, with a pilot catalog to be ready during Spring 1997, and a full production version ready by September 1, 1997.
Mike Nowak is planning to meet with John Gohsman and Pat Jones from the M-Pathways project to coordinate this effort. Mike is also planning to work with ITD Customer Relationship Managers (CRMs) as well as school data stewards to collect data for the catalog.
Electronic submission of reserve requests:
This project is in the planning phase.
Mike Nowak is working with Heidi Weise (LS&A) and Barbara MacAdam (Library) to identify and meet with faculty who will be teaching courses that will pilot the use of UMIE services during Fall 1997. Pilot use will include the use of instructional software from the ITD Office of Instructional Technology as well as the electronic reserve system of the Library.
This project is still in the planning phase.
Faculty Advisory Committee --
Dr. Carl Berger and Dr. Tom Greene from the Academic Computing Advisory Committee (ACAC) met with the provost to discuss funding and the formation of the faculty advisory group on 30 January 1997.
Mike Nowak met with Dean Frost (School of Information) to discuss involvement of SI faculty in the UMIE project as well as the UMIE faculty advisory committee.
Competitive Analysis --
Mike Nowak is working with Academic Information Processes to plan a workshop on web-based course management and delivery systems at the end of February. This is a CIC-wide effort, sponsored by U-M and Penn State.
User Needs Analysis --
This activity is in process.
Working with University of Michigan Computing Environment (UMCE) services --
Mike Nowak met with Tom Knox at OIT to discuss integration of the IFS Tools software with UMIE.
Working with other service providers --
Mike Nowak and others at OIT met with LS&A to discuss migration of existing PC-based instruction to the World Wide Web. Running special Macintosh servers to serve HyperCard stacks and using OIT's web framework were discussed. Heidi Weise, Mike Nowak, and Marc Siskin from the Language Resource Center (LRC) met to go over the technical requirements of the applications being considered for conversion.
The UMIE web site is now open at http://www.umich.edu/~umie/(MN)UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ON-LINE (UMOL) - project number 8064
Subscriber count: as of January 31507(an increase of 79 from December) paid
Communication and Content:
Direct communication with subscribers -- both voice and email -- has been steadily increasing. In January, UMOL had 80 subscriber and potential subscriber-initiated email dialogues. Of those, 40 were one-time interactions; the other 40 were continuing email conversations with additional questions asked and answered. Many involved interruption-of- service or questions about how to configure a custom U-M Online package. Some of those were forwarded to online.consulting or 4-HELP. Two were a little farther out -- one asking how to get his grandfather's student records (from late 19th century) and one letting us know that a former U-M student is now Miss Michigan. In our continuing efforts to ensure customer satisfaction, UMOL staffers made house calls (in Ann Arbor) to resolve particularly troublesome problems. UMOL seems to be attracting non- traditional subscribers who require additional, or different, types and kinds of support. In order to develop a support strategy -- documentation, training opportunities, and related materials -- UMOL staff met with 4-HELP consultants, and the ITD Education group to discuss and plan methods. A Saturday training session for new subscribers, taught by the ITD Education group, will be piloted in March.
In part, as a response to the newly-identified needs of the UMOL subscriber base, a major revision to the UMOL User Guide and Installation Instructions is underway. In order to move forward quickly, an evening working retreat was held on January 15 with representatives from the web team, the technical writing group, the graphics group, and the UMOL core team. The revisions will result in a single document that serves as both Installation Guide and User Guide. The printed material will map to information on the UMOL web site.
UMOL content coordinators are working with Andy Shaindlin of the Alumni Association Alumni Education group and Bill Hennessey of the Museum of Art. UMOL will provide secure web space for an online version of a seminar -- to be netcast via RealAudio -- and special exhibit of Alumni owned art that will be held at the Art Museum. The seminar titled "Aspects in Collecting" will be held on March 22. Assuming there is sustained interest, the web exhibit will remain in place for twelve months.
Another Alumni Association project, porting of the existing alumni mentoring service, AlumNet, from a desk top data base, File Maker Pro, to ORACLE and providing a web interface that will be deployed on the UMOL web site is being discussed.
Due to concerns that past releases do not cover netcasting, the historic speeches that had been available via RealAudio at the UMOL web site have been removed. UMOL staff are working with the General Councils office to obtain releases from the estates of the speakers. For UMOL's future needs, the General Councils office is assisting UMOL with the creation of a permission form that covers the internet.
Beginning Feb. 9, UMOL plans to offer WCBN's special Sunday night version of Cafe International radio show on the UMOL site. Since the program is required listening for a music class, netcasting will provide students the option of listening to the material at their convenience. In conjunction with providing the radio program, UMOL staff have drafted instructions for students of the class on how to subscribe to UMOL, obtain RealAudio software, and find the RealAudio shows on the UMOL site. At UMOL's request, 4-HELP has agreed to provide end-user support for the RealAudio Player.
Discussions with WCBN about netcasting via RealAudio or other locally- produced programming are underway.
Infrastructure and Technical:
Planning continues to provide the infrastructure for audio netcasting, via RealAudio, as a production service to the campus community.
Implementation plans for the IBM Advantis networking option remain on schedule, an early '97 rollout continues to appear feasible.
The UMOL software kit for the Windows 3.1 platform is under development.
The UMOL personal web page service has been deployed.
A UMOL subscriber catalog, based on X.500 -- with fields viewable only to fellow subscribers, is under development.
Due to the failure of the Accounting and Billing System, the Accounts Office has been unable to process 100 UMOL applications.
Becky Spaly, formerly an interim team member, has accepted a position with the UMOL project as a Content Coordinator.
Monthly statistics can be found at http://www.umonline.umich.edu/stats/
UM Online core team: Carrie Edlund, Linda Green, Becky Spaly, Brian Vaughan, Ellen Vaughan (project leader)(EV)CAMPAIGN FOR MICHIGAN PROJECTS DAC REPORTING (9940)
Given the resignation of the lead developer on this project, there has been some mad scrambling within ITD this month to proceed with work on the DAC Reporting dataset. Alice Tseng is now the main developer and Mike Polley has been designated to monitor the weekly loads on the production server (which continues to be loaded weekly and used as the basis for ongoing EIS training in various units on campus). Crisis assistance is generously being provided by two former DAC developers who now work in DBAS. A very concerted and energetic effort by all of these people during the past two weeks has resulted in considerable progress in terms of resolving and correcting data problems discovered by the Development Office in the production environment, adding user-developed queries to the test GQL diagram in preparation for a canned query demo on 02/12/97, and further enhancing the dataset on the development server (Oradev continues to be loaded once a month as an environment for housing and testing these enhancements). Current enhancements include adding fields to the dataset and the first phase of a gift summary table. Enhancements next on the list include further work on gift summary tables, reorganizing the GQL diagram, and creating a second limited access GQL diagram for Alumni Relations.(PB)THE FEDERATION
Indexing of Elsevier Science CDs continues. There are some issues with the quality of the materials we are receiving. Some changes to the processing scripts were made as temporary work arounds.
A second prototype for the MOA system is up and working, using the OpenText search engine and a more realistic viewing script.
We did some further refining of the requirements for the Elsevier authorization and accounting system.(SB)MUSEUM EDUCATIONAL SITE LICENSE (MESL) PROJECT
The MESL implementation is part of our overall digital library development effort which is a collaborative undertaking of the Information Technology Division, the School of Information, and the University Library. This report focuses on the MESL effort in ITD.
Deployment of security for the MESL Web space has been delayed due to complex differences between the development environment and the production environment. Deployment is now scheduled for Monday, February 3rd. See the December/January reports from the "Web Security Project" for more information.
The Proxima 4100Z projector and PowerBook 5300 purchased for use in Tappan Hall have been configured and are in use. Library and History of Art staff involved in managing the equipment were trained on setup and use. Professor Diane Kirkpatrick, the primary user, is able to setup the equipment easily on her own.
Students in Diane Kirkpatrick's History of Art 773 course are successfully working with the the MESL Web site, as well as with GET. Some students have built Web pages for class assignments with links directly to MESL images. Larger projects are in the planning stages.
Dr. Howard Besser, at UC-Berkeley, is arranging to have some of his students analyze the various MESL implementations at participating institutions. The feedback should be interesting and valuable.
The MESL cross-institutional technical report is in a structured format prepared as part of the Mellon Grant and will be completed in February. It will thoroughly describe UM's technical implementation of MESL.
MESL ITD Team: John Weise, Zoe Gurevich, Gail Lift, Patrick Furlong, Sandy Colombo(JW)CORE JOURNALS PROJECT
The Core Journals project is a partnership with UMI deploying around 1000 core journal titles in all disciplines in image format, linking them with Wilson Indexes in MIRLYN and putting in place the necessary structure for printing, accounting, and billing.
The Core Journals service became unavailable when ABS (Accounting and Billing system) went down Sunday, January 26. It was made available Thursday January 30 allowing printing to the ITD printers.January 1997 Core Journal Statistics Total Articles Requested 2226 Total Successful Prints 2070 Total Pages Printed 14199 Average Article size (pages) 6.85 Total Unsuccessful attempts 156 Test printing (i.e. printer=none) 0
(NG)WEB SECURITY PROJECT
The Web Security cross-task project was formed around mid-July to coordinate efforts in developing and designing the authentication and authorization schemes for Web systems on Campus.
KLP version 1.2 (encrypts all POST variables sent to the server) for WIN32, WIN16, AIX, and Solaris clients was ready by January 8, 1997. The server side testing was done on the MESL development machine (job.itd.umich.edu).
The MESL production server (mesl.itd.umich.edu) supports (as of Feb 3, 1997) PWS (Private Web Space) and KLP V1.2 (Kerberos Local Proxy) authentication schemes. Actually, there are 3 servers running simultaneously on the MESL production server. The primary server supports PWS authentication and authorization model. The secondary server supports KLP V1.2 authentication and authorization model. The tertiary server is accessible by a small number of IP addresses. This is so project participants (leaders, implementors) at other MESL institutions can try our system.
We had an informal meeting with a member of the LSA Information Technology unit to discuss the authentication and authorization schemes.
Some members of the WSP team attended 2-day Big 10 DCE meeting in East Lansing to get an update on Inter-CIC Authentication and Authorization Project (ICAAP), and some related topics.(ZG)DATA ACCESS/DELIVERY DATA ACCESS (9444)
The financial, payroll, Official Third Week Count, CRAS, procurement, and Human Resource datasets are stable and have undergone no modifications this month. Loads of student data to both the production and development servers occur according to the published schedule and the data is available on a production basis, but since load processing remains unacceptably time-consuming, it is still undergoing assessment for efficiency. Canned queries developed by LS&A for more general university use have been added to the Human Resource (HR) GQL diagram this month and are currently being tested by members of the Personnel Data Subgroup. Work has also been conducted on tuning the HR tables. A Macintosh version of the access/compliance application (for central office tracking of requests for access, attendance at training, signing of compliance forms, etc.) has been developed. The application, both on its Windows and Macintosh platforms, is soon to be deployed in the central offices. The Data Availability Plan (DAPC) is still on hiatus until plans for the evolution of the U-M data warehouse in light of M-Pathways implementation become clearer. Preparation for the first scheduled annual upgrade of GQL on campus is still underway, although there have been delays due to compatibility problems between various versions of SQL*Net and GQL. A proposal for additional funding for Data Access for this fiscal year is being requested from the PMLT to complete performance tuning of the student and Human Resource datasets, to improve the student data load process, and to complete rollout of the access/compliance application.ORACLE CAMPUS-WIDE LICENSING AGREEMENT
Serving as ITD representative on university-wide committee to renew UM's campus-wide licensing agreement with Oracle Corporation (current agreement expires in August) and on the negotiation team with Oracle as the representative for central administrative usage of Oracle. Gathered some preliminary information on the scope of the use of Oracle in ITD and of non-buy-in-unit use of Oracle by ITD customers. Met once so far with the university-wide committee (01/17/97) and once with the negotiation team (01/14/97). Next steps include determination of the comprehensiveness of the brainstormed list of Oracle products required on campus and review/discussion of Oracle's "first pass" at a pricing agreement.(PB)INFORMATION SERVICES GOPHERBLUE (9039)
Updating Gopher space to delete defunct areas or add messages with pointers to Web URLs where appropriate is being coordinated.

Student transcript order entry system (STUTOES): The database administration group reported a two-week delay in setting up the production server (PC01) which is critical to our move to production process of STUTOES. We have been waiting for this new server because it will give us automatic archiving of the data to insure no orders will be lost when released to the students. It is reported that it will be much faster than current servers. In addition to this delay, five new Crystal reports were defined by the Registrar's Office which are currently in progress. Several coding problems were resolved in the month of January, one of which was the truncation of the data stream when sent to the Oracle server. Our plan is to move the scripts, code and table data as soon as the PC01 server is available and then do volume testing. We have three people assigned to this task. Because of the above-mentioned delays, this project may not move to production until late February or early March. The team has also been working on a CUMREC paper. The first draft was submitted in December and accepted for presentation under the category of "The Great Migration". We received the CUMREC committee's comments and are currently working on the finial copy due February 28th.
General support and maintenance of Wolverine Access: The Office of the Registrar has implemented the full-featured version of Wolverine Access on the public access machines located in the lobby of LS&A. This required installing the secure version of Netscape, which takes advantage of the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. Students will now be able to access Financial Aid information and the new STUTOES system, coming soon. Because of the decrease in MacClient (Mandarin) usage -- it accounts for a small fraction of hits to the WA page -- those statistics are no longer included in the chart above. We will be phasing out the MacClient version of Wolverine Access within the next few months. A notification will be put on the WA site to inform the students they will need to use a secure web browser soon.
Production IMS experienced problems causing WA to be unavailable for a short period of time during the first part of the month. Additional connectivity problems with the South Switch on January 28th prevented any connections to the WA server. WA was down for about an hour. Network Systems located a dead interface card and a replacement was put into place by Wednesday of that week.(MP)WEB SERVICES

Product pricing, customer definition, marketing strategy, and product roll-out are under development for COW (web-based conferencing).
Web Browsers> Brian: Trying to determine Netscape licensing status, what products are included, etc. We would like Netscape 3.0 to be officially supported by ITD.
Web Editors> Becky, Brian: We are seriously looking at the following packages -- Claris Homepage, Netscape Navigator Gold, Microsoft Frontpage. A suite of tests for each package is under development (Becky, Brian, Sandy W., Bret, and Scott).(CK)U-M GATEWAY SUPPORT
David Richtmyer at the Library is working on high-level category/taxonomy definition for revamping catalog/index. Liz Shaw, a new staff member at the library, has been assigned to work with us to develop the interface to OpenText. We have determined that OpenText will accomplish both the catalog and web site indexing functions, but may need to run on separate servers (the site indexing function on our server, most likely).
We are collaborating with News & Info Services and Campus Info Centers to develop two new campus-wide content areas -- a departmental directory, and a Web-based events calendar (the current calendar is in gopher).
This month, we linked 10 new resources to the Gateway pages and also added them to the searchable catalog, and made numerous corrections and updates.
The statistics pattern for January is interesting, with a peak in mid-month and less traffic later. We believe this may indicate that our traffic is being limited by the network bottleneck at Merit.
Gateway statistics for January (see www.umich.edu/admin/ for details) --Personal server 25,300,166 requests 476,202 Mbytes transferred Departmental servers 6,610,504 requests 66,996 Mbytes transferred

The main purpose of the GPCC team is to further the mission of U-M's Information Technology Division by developing and deploying a group of high-quality, large-scale, high-performance computing solutions (including appropriate infrastructure).
General Information: IRAP met with Operations Management and revised their Memorandi of Understanding (MOUs). GPCC saved over $76,000 per year in our production and development budgets.
January brought about some team changes: Paul Alukal is leaving the team for a system administration position at MCIT (the Medical Center Information Technology group, which provides IT services for the U-M Medical Center). His last day is Friday, January 31, 1997. Melody Alfather decided to step down as team leader, but will remain on the team in a technical capacity. The open team leader position has been posted internally. There will also be a technical position posted as soon as GPCC works out the details. GPCC is also looking to hire an additional student (temporary employee). Chuck Lever's MPathways responsibilities are also shifting so that he will be more available for Login team projects.ITD LOGIN SERVICE (Project 10001)
Usage: Planning and implementation is underway to address short and long-term capacity needs. Ultra Enterprise 1 model 170s are on order to replace the current Sparc 20s which provide the Login service. We expect to receive the equipment before March, and deploy it over the next few months. We are attempting also to replace our Sparc 5 administrative machines with Ultra Enterprise 1 model 140s.
The IFS password file now contains 64,859 entries. The login service has more than 64,000 subscribers. We support an average of 1850-1950 concurrent users between the hours of 2 and 5 PM. Our evening peak is almost 1000 concurrent users. Our customers log in at a rate higher than 250 users per minute during our peak periods. This month we saw a peak single-machine usage of 173 concurrent users.
New Features: Because sendmail is a continuing security problem, we are deploying a new mail delivery system which will greatly improve the security of our login service. Deployment of phase I began over Winter break, and has been completed. Phase II is being tested now on one machine in the Login pool. We also recently deployed a program that prevents "buffer overflow attacks" -- when a malicious user attempts to write machine instructions onto a program's stack by taking advantage of a programming error. These two changes should significantly reduce our security vulnerabilities.
"Sufficient balance required" was implemented on schedule and correctly. Our customers were automatically notified of the reason for denial of service and were given actions to take in order to remedy the situation. As a side effect, we've greatly reduced our pts request rate on the IFS team's protection database server.
Technical Achievements: The latest "patches" release of AFS 3.4a is now available to us, and we have begun quality assurance testing and roll-out. This release contains many bug-fixes, including a fix for recent problems caused by users who overflow their quota with files larger than our AFS client caches.
A new version of Kiosk is being developed that will allow us to use lightweight curses-based clients or commands run from a script to update the contents of Kiosk. We also deployed a "Message Of The Day" manager which automatically expires messages in our MOTDs.
We are testing a new set of patches for Solaris 2.5.1 that we hope will make our services even more stable.
We've been exploring Oracle and Lotus Notes to handle our databasing and collaboration needs. Currently, Oracle is running on one of our test machines, and we have several Notes databases that help us track changes and problems, and focus our planning process. During January, some of these databases were made available on our team's home page.ITD STATISTICS AND COMPUTATION SERVICE (Project 10006)
Usage: On January 1, we replaced the final remaining Sparc 1000 with an Ultra 1 Model 170. This machine, which is now the basis for the service, has been adequately handling our usage, which is usually about 15 concurrent users during the day running a mix of SPSS, SAS, pine, and Fortran programs. Removing the Sparc 1000s from production saved operational expenses. We are currently looking for buyers for the decommissioned Sparc 1000s.
Discrepancies between our pts groups (which controls access to the Statistics service), and the ABS database (which controls subscription fee charging) were resolved as of December 16. ABS subscriptions and access to the service were in synch, but we've learned that they are growing disparate again - the ABS subscription team told us they've identified a spot in the code that could be causing the discrepancy when a user's uniqname changes (for example, if a user changes her name because of a marriage).
GPCC is still trying to work with ESRI to get our problem with the "arc" software resolved. Arc works on the Workstations at NUBS and Angell, but not on the Statistics & Computation Service server machine (stat.itd.umich.edu). ESRI has been in communciation with our team.
New Features: We are continuing to work with ITD marketing research and communications to actively market this service. Brochures were mailed to faculty in late December, advertising that it only takes "one-call" to get a class signed up for the service. Representatives of various parts of ITD are scheduled to get together soon to discuss where it makes sense to ask customers to call for "one-call" subscriptions and other class-setup services in the future. Lynne Liston is driving this initiative.
We've received a number of requests for MATLAB and WAVELET, and have ordered them for the service. We are starting off with a 5-concurrent-user floating license for MATLAB and it's sub-applications WAVELET, and SIGNAL PROCESSING. We've also ordered the re-license of HLM2/3 for our service.
We're considering adding a couple of new applications to the service: Gauss, Gaussian94, and Applix have been nominated. ScholarPac licensing terms will change this month, so talks are under way with Aaron Landy to determine our financial and software impact. Fortran90 will be added to the service when the new ScholarPac arrives (Aaron said it's due in February now, pushed back from January).
Sandy Colombo is driving an initiative to create a UMIE-like document to describe a "Research Computing Environmen" at UM; the Statistics and Computation Service will prove to be an integral part of this RCE, at least for a subset of the market.
We are also becoming active participants in an effort to deploy a campus-wide GIS infrastructure at U-M. GIS white papers are available from GPCC.
Technical Achievements: See ITD Login Service above.
Another upgrade has been approved for the ITD Statistics and Computation service. The machine to replace the current Ultra 170 will be an Ultra Enterprise 2 model 200 and has been ordered. The new machine has a pair of 200Mhz 64bit CPUs and a significant amount of data and instruction cache. We also hope to explore DLT cartridge drives and RAID options to add significant amounts of local disk storage to this machine.WORKSTATIONS AT NUBS AND ANGELL COURTYARD COMPUTING RESOURCE SITES
New Features: IRAP met with Operations Management and revised their Memorandi of Understanding (MOUs). The costs for the Workstations at NUBs and Angell are split between the Login and Stat budgets. Workstation hardware is paid for from the production Login budget until the remaining depreciation payments for the Sparc 1000 disappear from the Stat budget, at which time the workstation hardware will be charged against the Stat budget. Applications development and licensing fees are paid for from the Stat budget at present.
GPCC supports 6 Sun Ultras at NUBS and 3 at Angell Courtyard (specifically, they are Ultra 1-170s), and 1 Ultra at CSCAR (Ultra 1-140). Access to these machines is restricted to those who are subscribed to the ITD Statistics and Computation Service. We did not receive much griping about this restriction, which took place on January 6, 1997. Those who use the Statistics and Computation Service have mentioned that there are always machines available for them to use now.
Technical Achievements: See ITD Login Service above.
Over the last two months, we've fixed a problem with our X login software that was causing our users to power-cycle the workstations to recover the console login prompt. Most of our machines have been up for almost 55 days. This was a significant service reliability problem for us, and we have finally solved it.ITD POWERADMIN SERVICE
Usage: This pilot service currently supports 55 machines (including the Login Service machines). We expect several new customers this month and next, including MESL and UM Online.
Currently, only the Solaris platform is available. The creation of an AIX distribution has been planned and the team is awaiting equipment in order to begin. Future visions include an NT platform (maybe in 1998).
IRAP of PD&D met with Operations Management and created a deal where IRAP still pays about $2,500 for system administration support for their Solaris machines, but of that $2500, OM gets about $500 and GPCC gets $2000. GPCC will train more than one OM resource in how to manage PowerAdmin tasks. This arrangement is a win for both PD&D and OM: OM gets to administer Solaris machines uniformly and with significantly less effort, and PD&D gets standardized and secure Solaris machines in a much shorter timeframe than previously.
New Features: Name changed in January from the "Template Service" to the "PowerAdmin Service". New pricing.
Technical Achievements: See ITD Login Service above.
