Fifteen-year-old Adsoftware has developed a fleet-management system and logistics package, Airpack, that fulfils European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and FAA airworthiness standards. Airpack has full links to Boeing Airplane Health Management (AHM) and Airbus products, along with an electronic flight bag (EFB). Its six modules are: Airtime for fleet management, Airstock for inventory control, Airdoc for document management, Airuser for security, Airstat for reliability and Airwork for time tracking. Technical features include component tracking, labor-hour tracking, maintenance scheduling and service bulletins. Airpack's target market is midsized airlines, helicopter operators, MRO providers and continuing airworthiness management organizations (CAMO). Airpack, built on dot.net technology, is Microsoft Windows-ready, Web-enabled and multilanguage. Training can be done in five days, the company says. CAMP tracks these changes and applies them to aircraft to assist maintenance planning. Its Inventory Control increases efficiency and streamlines cradle-to-grave part management in a hosted, web-based application that allows customers access to the system without special software, the company says. With 25 years of experience, Cimber Air Data now offers Amicos Next Generation (NG), an affordable solution with almost all functions required for managing maintenance, the company says. NG also collects financial data for management reporting and interfacing with other applications such as finance, operations and ERPs. Version 1.0 of NG has been released with a state-of-art user interface, a key performance indicator (KPI) dashboard, workflow management and case-building. An advanced PDF print engine enables automatic import and formatting of work cards from the aircraft OEM and PDF printing or emailing of documents. For smaller operators, NG can be delivered with components preconfigured to run a virtual machine on one server. NG uses a Java graphical user interface, SQL programming and the latest Oracle database. It also does long- and short-term planning for preventive, reactive and condition-based maintenance and manages schedules, optimizes resources and generates KPIs, the company says Maximo plans inventories to meet maintenance demand, manages vendor contracts and supports purchase, lease, rental, warranty, rate, master, blanket and user-defined contracts. Swiss AviationSoftware offers AMOS, a comprehensive, fully integrated software package that manages maintenance, engineering and logistics requirements of modern airlines and MRO providers by fulfilling demanding airworthiness standards. AMOS has core modules for material management, maintenance and engineering, component maintenance, maintenance planning and control, quality assurance, financial management and interfaces. More than 110 airlines, airline groups and MRO providers use AMOS. The software is written in pure Java and is fully web-enabled. As Swiss AviationSoftware is 100% owned by Swiss International Air Lines, AMOS is the only major MRO software developed by an airline. The company has concentrated on MRO software for two decades, and none of its customers has ever replaced AMOS with another MRO software, the company states. Tata Consultancy Services developed its MRO solution Swift in collaboration with British Airways. Swift is a fully integrated solution offering maintenance engineering, line maintenance, heavy maintenance, engine/component maintenance and supply chain management with seamless integration to back-end finance and human resources, the company says. Swift runs on top of SAP's Netweaver platform, and it is mobile and e-enabled for integration with OEM tools such as Boeing's aircraft health-monitoring (AHM) system on the 787 and Airbus's Airman aircraft maintenance analysis application on the A380. The two-year-old Swift's customers include British Airways and Garuda Indonesia Airlines. www.tcs.com
Tracware makes AeroTrac, a process-control software designed to seamlessly integrate the technical, commercial, financial and logistical business processes within an aviation MRO organization. AeroTrac includes aircraft maintenance and planning, engine and component MRO and piece-part processing, design and manufacture, including aircraft modification and parts distribution. It is used by organizations that manage their own fleets or offer third-party maintenance services. AeroTrac incorporates inventory and commercial functions and links to accounting solutions for all financial transactions. AeroTrac is used at more than 50 sites globally. The target market is small to medium-sized MROs of airframes, engines and components, operators, regional airlines and corporations. All sites use a version of AeroTrac developed from a single-source code, so there is no bespoke functionality. TracWare can rapidly develop and deploy new functionalities, according to the company. AeroTrac uses a Microsoft SQL Server database combined with a Visual Basic front-end application. A Microsoft dot.net version (3.0) is under development. www.tracware.co.uk
Trax makes Trax Maintenance, a fully integrated maintenance management software that allows information flow between modules. Functionalities include order and inventory management; engineering, including maintenance program, long- and short-term planning for aircraft, materials, manpower and slots; production control, including shop-floor data capture; support shops; technical records; reliability analysis; technical library management; digital document management; component sales; quality-assurance auditing, training and qualification management; financial management system integration; accounts payable matching and ground-support equipment module. About 120 customers worldwide now use Trax. The software uses an Oracle database for the servers, and the clients are Windows-based for the desktop version and open platform, for example iOS, Windows or Linux, for mobile technology. Ultramain offers Ultramain, a mature maintenance and engineering software. Used by airlines worldwide, Ultramain provides comprehensive integrated support for airline technical, flight and cabin organizations. The software has served airlines for more than 20 years with incremental product growth, the company states. Ultramain functions include maintenance planning and scheduling, base maintenance, capacity modeling, budgeting and powerplant management. Volartec makes Alkym Management & Control System for Aircraft Maintenance. Alkym is a totally integrated, commercial, off-the-shelf maintenance-management software product that effectively and efficiently manages information flow within its different modules. It is a complete and flexible solution developed for the aviation industry allowing for technical operation to be managed productively, the company says. With more 15 years of aviation experience, Volartec has established Alkym as a highly functional but affordable system. Functionalities include maintenance control, planning, engineering, reliability, purchasing and repairs, human resources, quality assurance, inventory, receiving and shipping, sales, technical library, system configuration, Production Kiosk, Alkym Queries.net, Alkym M-Transfer and Alkym M-Files. Alkym uses dot.net and SQL and now serves 40 customers. Short implementation time, typically six weeks, and low cost make it attractive to small and medium-sized airlines. www.volartec.aero
One of the most significant drivers for server virtualization implementation is IT shops' ability to make server deployment and configuration faster and more efficient. According to 2008 research by Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) speeding server provisioning was the second highest reason for using server virtualization, topped only by server consolidation.
In this tip, we discuss how virtual systems management tools can speed virtual machine (VM) migration and deployment and ease compliance, monitoring, and other management hassles.
Faster virtual machine deployment
Recent EMA research looked at several key performance indicators (KPIs) for virtual system deployment and what helps drive the best performers in each KPI. Two of the most important KPIs we measured were new virtual machine (VM) deployment time and VM migration time.
Among respondents, the best performers could provision a new VM -- from the initial request to final handover to the requestor -- in less than 30 minutes. With sophisticated virtual machine provisioning, VM templates and other management tools, this seems easy. But to maintain audit control and compliance, prevent VM sprawl, and ensure efficient use of hardware and software resources, strict standards must be applied to all new VMs. So it is more difficult to do deploy new VMs properly than it might seem. Indeed, the average deployment time was between two and five hours.
The best performers were likely to use discovery and inventory management software (such as BDNA Insight or Hyperic HQ Enterprise), which allows administrators to quickly (and even automatically) locate available servers, hosts, and software licenses for new deployments without breaching compliance obligations or rummaging through remote terminals, virtualization control consoles, server and VM logs, and asset spreadsheets.
These IT shops were also much more likely to use operating system provisioning software such as BMC BladeLogic Operations Manager and IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager. After all, not every image can be cloned, and sometimes a completely new image must be provisioned. Automated virtual machine provisioning is fast and generally error-free, and -- when cloning isn't suitable (especially for broader automated processes) -- it will certainly speed deployment.
Interestingly, the use of patch distribution software, such as VMware vCenter Update Manager or Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), also sped deployment. This is especially important if you do not regularly patch individual 'golden' images -- you can include patch management agents in the base images so patch updates run automatically at VM startup, shortening the time between startup and delivering a fully patched machine.
Faster virtual machine migration Contrary to commonly held belief -- and vendor hype -- VM migration is not always a rapid and automatic process. Although the median VM migration time in EMA's research is actually two to five hours, the top 10% of virtual enterprises can migrate a VM in less than 30 minutes, and many do so even more quickly.
These best performers were significantly more likely to use virtual machine management technologies such as VMware VMotion and Citrix XenMotion. Such tools make migration a no-brainer and faster than any manual process by far, with no perceivable downtime.
Even so, not all VM migration will (or can) be fully automated. This explains why best performers were much more likely to be using automation solutions for OS and application provisioning such as Altiris Server Management Suite and HP Server Automation (download PDF). Automatic OS and application provisioning will shorten the time from initial VM allocation to full production when clones will not do the job.
Integration capabilitiesUsing virtual systems management (VSM) tools that integrate across multiple areas also improves VM deployment times, according to EMA's research.
The greatest benefit appears to come from VSM tools that operate across both physical and virtual environments. This helps not just with racking and stacking of new equipment (even virtual infrastructures need new hardware now and then) but also with tracking licenses, provisioning software and applying updates across the entire enterprise, allowing faster workflow from request to handover for a new server environment.
The next best outcome is associated with integrated virtual host and guest management. When you integrate provisioning of new virtual host resource pools with cloning and deployment of new VMs, it takes more manual steps out of the deployment process, again speeding up the workflow from request to handover.
Finally, integrated management for all the virtualization technologies in use also helps improve deployment times. Provisioning resources such as servers, storage or network all from one screen (and with one skill set) speeds up deployment by allowing a single administrator to complete the whole job, without delays from other departments searching for resources to do the work.
VSM: No silver bulletOf course, as with other VSM capabilities, these outcomes are not magical. The tools themselves won't make the difference; they must be applied judiciously, to address specific problems, and alongside often-needed changes in people and process. Other methods can improve deployment times -- such enterprise-wide software licenses that save the time wasted in procuring new licenses for each new VM.
But EMA research has found the approaches to VSM outlined here have clear benefits in terms of faster virtual server deployment and migration and they should certainly be considered as part of a broader VSM strategy.
