final week, like loads of you, I think about, I watched the State of the Union and tried to determine what changed into actual and what changed into fiction. Tied into a few of the reside-streamed press truth-checking streams, I found that the feedback validating or invalidating what the president referred to got here in to date after the comment turned into made that it will were more suitable to pass the speech and wait until the following day when the speak and the remarks have been more suitable matched.
Even then, it wasn't linear, it became just collections of comments that had been biased either for or towards the speak. this is now not fact -- it's just intellect-numbing pablum for those on both the left or appropriate who truly don't need to consider. i admire to make up my own intellect not have a bunch of individuals on either aspect who definitely are commenting from the sidelines force me into their increasingly delusional world view.
This week IBM think takes location in San Francisco, and some of the classes that will be coated is its challenge Debater. What makes this AI project entertaining is that it melds human interplay with deep getting to know to create a extremely diverse kind of answer that would be uniquely advantageous to each litigation and politics. It might make the courtroom gadget plenty fairer, and it also might make it far more complicated for a flesh presser or biased media outlet to confuse or deceive us.
On this present day earlier than IBM consider, i may explain how this new hybrid AI platform that IBM is showcasing may make politics and litigation more really useful after which close with my manufactured from the week. This week it is the new Dell XPS 13 in Frost White, which makes an wonderful observation with design, portability, materials and technology.making a Hybrid AI
considered one of IBM's pleasing positions, which really just isn't wonderful, is that AI expertise should be used to raise instead of replace people. There are lot of causes for this. probably the most compelling for me is that if robots take over everything, who is going to buy stuff? No, wait, possibly probably the most compelling is that in IBM's world we are not out of date, and the possibility of becoming obsolete as a race is some thing i would hope more of us might wrap our heads around.
Now we do have the concept of the singularity, wherein man and computer become inseparable, however this is not likely in my lifetime. If it were to arrive early, i'm pretty bound it will end my lifestyles, so an alternative path could be enormously extra appealing.
considering most AIs, even those designed to work with americans, are created mostly as remoted standalone programs that might, with a flip of a change, not need their human operators, a different approach is needed to address this human obsolescence issue.IBM's task Debater
This brings us to IBM's project Debater. This revolutionary method uses a mix of crowdsourcing and deep researching AI to come up with whatever far greater than both component can also be on my own. task Debater uses the crowdsource mannequin to define the quality of an argument, which then is used to educate the deep getting to know AI engine and optimize what is originally a debate response.
This blends the AI's affinity for records and numbers, the purpose a part of the answer, to the human subjective view of quality. In an important case, what you get is potentially a self-evolving determination equipment more desirable in a position to face up to problems like confirmation bias, and make reality-primarily based selections that are not devoid of feeling and humanity.
once again, taking a look at this ideally, it might be a blend of purpose and subjective determination criteria, still in line with established records, that is focused on human defined super outcomes.
The foundation of the movie collection Terminator would be a show off of an purpose AI-driven future devoid of the human facets that challenge Debater brings to the table. Of route, the world we at the moment reside in is defined by using an excess of subjective determination methods which are focused extra on repute and seeming correct than on being right. both extreme would not bode neatly for our survival. The State of the Union
In observing the State of the Union, I accompanied three problems with attempting to evaluate the veracity of the information. One changed into that the fact checkers could not sustain. Two, that they had three classes of response, "right, wrong, misleading," and essentially the most standard, deceptive, was at all times nuanced poor, which made the media insurance seem biased. Three, the response from the Democrats had little to do with the specific speak (now not a shock, considering that it changed into written before the event and the speaker did not watch the tackle). This closing is like staring at a debate between two people who can not hear every other's positions. It became less a true response and extra a "seem, I too can be on television!"
What mission Debater does is use americans to set up the satisfactory of arguments on either side of an argument to get to the strongest arguments. individuals in the crowdsourced pool vote only on the arguments they consider, in order that they don't compromise the outcome because of preset biases.
this is able to permit a true-time score of the arguments on both sides earlier than the address. as an example, let's take the wall. The strongest argument for it is probably going the discount of criminals coming into the U.S. The most powerful argument in opposition t it's that spending cash on enhancing current border protection and capabilities just like the Coast defend would have a enhanced impact on unlawful immigration and boost the probability of catching the criminals on the border. both positions could be backed by way of validated facts to support the audience pick the better facet.
So, while hearing the president speak, an observer would see both the strongest argument for his place on the wall and the strongest argument in opposition t, and then could kind an opinion on which place to support. in contrast to the media, or either side of the argument, these can be impartial and truth-based.
I do suppose that this implementation doubtless would force using this tool in the determination-making feeding the State of the Union and that smarter presidents, not wanting to look foolish on television, would use it to set their positions in the first vicinity. if they did not, we would have the goal tools critical to identify their incompetence and the need to get rid of them from office.
it's my view that this may significantly restoration the current world political manner, which is at the moment more about what the left or right need, and fewer about doing what is appropriate.
One other factor that an AI may add is a ranking of the arguments based on our interesting cases. for instance, an AI could, and increasingly possible does, comprehend greater about you than you find out about yourself.
We regularly do not realize that the positions we take are towards our own most suitable hobbies, as a result of we are convinced to take our positions through charismatic individuals who don't even be aware of us, not to mention have our ultimate pursuits at coronary heart. This might support fuel a far better bipartisan approach in government, because it should be greater exciting to us if whatever is to our benefit than if it is a left or right theory.
This would not enhance government alone -- it may have a large effective have an effect on on litigation.extra constructive Litigation
When i used to be observing the FTC/Qualcomm case a few weeks again, i used to be struck with what a tricky job the decide had, which become made extra complex for the reason that the FTC could not seem to location its proof into any type of determination matrix.
A decide typically desires to do a superb job and attain the correct decision, however here's at pass-applications with the individuals providing their cases, who wish to herd a choose to a decision favoring their facet. during this variety of a case, both sides typically consists of groups of attorneys, and there is just one choose, which makes it virtually inconceivable for the judge to look through the smoke. It looks extra seemingly that judges will end up figuring out the case on some thing apart from the records in proof.
What the criminal career has is miles of documented arguments and positions, together with information over which facet prevailed and at what level. In impact, a good deal of the crowdsourcing a part of the trouble is cooked -- it simply needs to be fed into the AI in order that a judge can get a true-time sense of no matter if what is being argued is each according to the evidence and consistent with case legislations and priority.
It now not most effective would force both felony groups to up their game, however additionally would give the choose with a near superpower in terms of selecting the alterations between records and fabrications. in brief, it doubtlessly would flip a process it is often greater efficiency art than the rest into whatever that might be way more prone to verify guilt or innocence accurately. it will especially benefit those that are overmatched by way of their opponents when it comes to supplies.
IBM's Watson had the felony career as an initial target. This application no longer only could be extraordinarily potent but also would increase significantly the integrity of the prison procedure. IBM says that its suppose convention is ready changing the realm. This year, with project Debater, that looks rather correct.Wrapping Up
discovering how you can use the subjective advantage we now have while improving the outcome with the aid of making certain that these selections have an effective goal basis would improvement the area. From the proliferation of nuclear weapons, to wars, to what to do about global warming, the suitable blend of human/computing device could make the area a stronger vicinity to live. It could make our products more advantageous focused, and our governments greater responsive and fewer prone to get us killed.
these effects become increasingly viable as more groups study out-of-the-box strategies like undertaking Debater, and the world shifts from being about us vs. them to being pretty much making issues measurably improved over time. we now have lot of things that want fixing. AI is each part of the difficulty and a major part of the answer, and project Debater is on the latter direction. For these going to IBM believe this week, i may see you there.
The Dell XPS line is Dell's corresponding to GM's Cadillac or Ford's Lincoln. it is a premium line still at the desirable end of budget friendly, which specializes in design, nice and event over pure efficiency, rate or sturdiness.
the line came about, a lot like Microsoft's floor line, as a counter to Apple's MacBook, however as Apple's pastime in PCs waned, it has shifted to greater of a standout product by itself merits and less of a MacBook clone.
The XPS 13 Dell sent me changed into surest in Frost White. With an Intel Core 7 processor, alluring 4K reveal, 512-GB NVMe SSD, and windows 10 professional, it prices simply over US$2K. Battery life should still be well over 10 hours, and it has a small pocketable colour-matching vigor provide, so I should not have to raise a backpack and i nevertheless have numerous battery existence. (My very own aim is to not must lug my heavy backpack everyplace i'm going.)
probably the most alterations this year is the monitor bezels are smaller, and the digicam has been moved from the backside of the monitor to the suitable, which potential it is rarely pretty much as good at focusing the individuals you're video conferencing with on the state of your nostril hair grooming (whatever thing i am not going to miss).
With three thunderbolt/charging USB ports, it might probably support up to two additional 4K monitors (many people have begun to go back and forth with one or two small moveable displays so we can better work on the street), and it has a biometric vigour button that fires the desktop up and ensures the grownup the usage of it is you.
At round 2.7 pounds, this is a light computing device, and its Frost White color (I usually desire dark hues like black) is transforming into on me, because it feels like it came from the white science fiction future portrayed in lots of videos. (it could seem impressively decent in an advanced weapons or bio lab.)
With a ninety % recyclable design, it's also exceedingly green, which is further supported by way of a Bronze EPEAT rating for sustainability. It has Dell's fantastic Cinema solution for looking at tv and films, which would be far more advantageous if Amazon would ultimately enable us to download and watch top films on a computer (it is where most of my video library is).
briefly, the XPS 13 is a different show off from Dell that blends design and efficiency into whatever thing you will also be proud to see in your desk, and it's my manufactured from the week.

UNITED nations, Feb eleven 2019 (IPS) - The United countries– as soon as facetiously described as an institution whose bloated forms strikes at the leisured pace of a paralytic snail — is incessantly zooming into the container of fast-paced, reducing-side digital expertise the place humans might also one day get replaced with machines and robots.
is that this a glimpse into a far off future or a far-fetched fable?
The technological improvements presently being experimented at the UN encompass synthetic intelligence (AI), desktop-learning, e-translations (involving the UN’s six legitimate languages where machines are taking up from people) and robotics.
The United countries says it has also been using unarmed and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, in peacekeeping operations, “assisting to increase our situational focus and to enhance our means to protect civilians”.
At a joint assembly of the UN’s financial and Social Council (ECOSOC) and its economic and Social Committee, a robot named Sophia had an interactive session final yr with Deputy Secretary-customary Amina J. Mohammed.
among the many technological improvements being delivered on earth physique, and primarily within the UN’s E-conference functions, is the use of eLUNa –electronic Languages United countries — “a computer translation interface exceptionally developed for the interpretation of UN files.”
What distinguishes eLUNa from commercial CAT (desktop-Assisted Translation) tools is that it turned into developed completely via the United international locations and is primarily geared in opposition t the wants and dealing strategies of UN language gurus, says the UN.
anyway the UN headquarters in new york, the spreading eLUNa community includes the UN office in Geneva (UNOG), the UN workplace in Vienna (UNOV), the UN office in Nairobi (UNON) and the economic and Social commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) based mostly in Beirut.
Secretary-normal Antonio Guterres says the breakthrough has been introduced on with the aid of a mixture of computing energy, robotics, massive statistics and synthetic intelligence—whilst they generate revolutions in healthcare, transport and manufacturing worldwide.
“i am convinced that these new capacities can support raise millions of americans out of poverty, obtain the Sustainable construction desires (SDGs) and permit constructing countries to leapfrog into a higher future,” he expected ultimate 12 months.
Addressing the government heads of some 31 UN groups remaining November, Guterres singled out one of the challenges emanating from international mega trends and technological advancements in four distinct areas — synthetic intelligence; cyberspace; biotechnology; and the have an effect on of technological applications on peace and safety — “in an effort to selecting particular entry points for UN engagement and to investigate focal point areas the place the UN system can add price.”
He talked about, he's working with colleagues all the way through the complete UN gadget to verify “how our company can enhanced harness the advantages and handle the hazards of latest applied sciences, and how the United international locations itself could make better use of innovation.”
Christopher Fabian, principal Adviser within the office of global Innovation on the UN’s infants’s company UNICEF, one of the vital organizations making headway in AI, instructed IPS that UNICEF is the usage of computing device researching and synthetic Intelligence (ML/AI) for both programmatic and operational applications.
according to the “ideas of Digital building,” the corporation promotes applications and construction of machine researching and artificial Intelligence with equity at their core, no matter if through fair and open working towards sets or via discussions on algorithmic equity and counsel poverty, he added.
for instance, he mentioned, UNICEF is developing Magic container, a collaborative platform that is made possible in the course of the contributions of deepest sector companions corresponding to Telefonica, Google, IBM, Amadeus and pink Hat, which share their records and knowledge for public good.
through harnessing precise-time statistics generated by the private sector, UNICEF can gain vital insights into the needs of inclined populations, and make more informed choices about how to make investments its components to respond to catastrophe, epidemics and other challenges, said Fabian.
in addition, UNICEF, via its task Fund, the primary monetary car of its form in the United nations, collaborates with innovators on the ground in UNICEF programme nations to construct and test new solutions on the pace required to sustain with the unexpectedly evolving challenges dealing with toddlers.
The venture Fund turned into launched through UNICEF in 2016 — a $17.9 million investment fund — applying lessons learned over 8+ years, undertaking the advanced work of helping to determine and grow innovations for children.
The UNICEF project Fund makes $50–100K early stage investments in technologies — together with information science and AI — for infants, developed through UNICEF nation offices or groups in UNICEF programme countries.
with the aid of proposing bendy funding to early-stage innovators, it permits UNICEF to right now determine, fund and grow open-supply know-how solutions that display competencies to positively influence the lives of inclined children, declared Fabian.
in the meantime, Guterres noted new technologies could raise the protection of peace and safety, together with disarmament and non-proliferation goals, by using providing new equipment and augmenting existing ones.
for instance, he stated, using shared ledger know-how comparable to Blockchain in nuclear safeguards, or computing device discovering in multilateral disarmament verification — because the comprehensive Nuclear-look at various-Ban Treaty organization is pioneering.
Excerpts from an interview with UNICEF’s Christopher Fabian:
IPS: what's the upside and draw back of automation– and certainly at UNICEF? Is attaining effectivity a key criterion?
Fabian: AI can help UNICEF in a couple of methods — from deep studying algorithms that can learn underlying patterns in satellite imagery to map every faculty on this planet, to predictive models that can support us keep away from the unfold of ailments. These type of options can support improve the reach and effectivity of programmes within the field as well as optimize the allocation of the scarce materials.
youngsters, challenges are many. First, is the inability of exceptional practising sets. facts around the most vulnerable populations is commonly scarce and inaccurate. As a collective, we need to birth placing extra substances towards collecting facts from the floor, to validate latest data, and to debias these datasets.
however what happens as soon as we've distinctive, respectable satisfactory datasets? We nonetheless should maintain working together to ensure that the statistics is used to build fair, inclusive algorithms. At UNICEF, we should be sure that we're a part of the conversations happening globally, so that we will convey the voice of children, in particular probably the most susceptible, to the table.
As one of the most efforts to mitigate these risks, UNICEF is a founding companion of the Partnership on AI to benefit americans and Society – and a member of several Working agencies including the ‘reasonable, transparent and dependable AI’ and the ‘AI, Labor and economic system’-. The partnership was established to examine and formulate most beneficial practices on AI technologies, to advance the general public’s figuring out of AI and its influences on americans and society.
IPS: To the better of your expertise, is UNICEF the simplest — or probably the most few UN corporations –on the path to digitized, extremely-automated operations?
Fabian: Initiatives around the use of large statistics, AI, blockchain and different digital innovations are being piloted in several UN corporations and programmes — and infrequently through joint collaborations among them.
in an effort to promote the sharing of these experiences and learn from each and every other’s successes and screw ups, UNICEF co-funded, at the side of the world meals Programme (WFP), the UN Innovation network — an off-the-cuff, collaborative community of UN innovators attracted to sharing their capabilities and journey with others to advertise and improve innovation in the UN device.
in a similar fashion, frontier technologies and digitalization are one of the main priorities of the Secretary popular. To toughen digital cooperation and boost proposals among governments, the inner most sector, civil society, international agencies, academia, technical group and other significant stakeholders within the digital space, the high-stage Panel for Digital Cooperation changed into set.
The Panel is expected to raise recognition about the transformative impact of digital applied sciences across society and the economic system, and make contributions to the broader public debate on a way to make certain a secure and inclusive digital future for all, deliberating vital human rights norms.
IPS: Kai-fu Lee, writer of “AI Superpowers” and a longtime tech executive, is quoted by using the long island instances as saying that AI will dispose of forty percent of the realm’s jobs within 15 years? And a report by way of the realm financial forum (WEF), which met in Davos remaining month, has estimated that 1.37 million laborers may be displaced via automation within the next decade. what's your prediction for UNICEF?
Fabian: in accordance with fresh experiences, between 75 million and 375 million worker's (3 to 14% of the world body of workers) will deserve to change occupational classes by 2030 if automation happens at a medium-to-speedy expense. in a similar fashion, in keeping with World financial forum, 65% of little ones coming into faculty nowadays, can have jobs that don’t exist yet. This capability that notwithstanding many roles will disappear, many new ones will be created.
although, there is a robust evidence of expertise mismatch between younger people and employers; younger americans are not learning the competencies they need to get jobs. If we manage to keep in mind the abilities necessary for the way forward for jobs and are in a position to alter schooling programs hence, toddlers and youth may be more resilient to automation and greater organized for the longer term.
considered one of UNICEF’s efforts during this front is suggestions poverty, an initiative that aims at ensuring that every child has access to the correct suggestions, possibility and choice.
further info — UNICEF technology AI stats (i.e. stats UNICEF predicts/works with):
IPS: Do you suppose the merits of AI at UNICEF will eventually spillover — and main via illustration — into the UN secretariat and different UN corporations?
Fabian: similar to question 3 (vis a vis UN Innovation network and high stage Panel on Digital Cooperation). we're working with/through both businesses and spot aid for the benefits of AI (and a focus paid to making a choice on and mitigating risks) growing.

synthetic intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live our lives; it's everywhere and here to reside. The ideas of synthetic intelligence all started on the pages of science fiction, which delivered us to the inspiration of wise robots. With the invention of electronic digital computer systems within the early 1940s the pursuit of AI turned into made feasible. The time period itself changed into coined at a convention at Dartmouth in the summer of 1956, where scientists gathered to talk about how to application computer systems to resolve complications with the potential of a human. AI flourished for the subsequent two many years and optimism was excessive that we would quickly have machines with the general intelligence of a typical human. many of us will don't forget HAL 9000 from the movie 2001: a space Odyssey. but the computer systems then were with ease now not effective satisfactory to store the quantity of information required or procedure it as quickly as essential so AI remained basically hype. however by way of the conclusion of the 20th century computing vigor and speed had superior to the element where AI can be realized, marked by means of such demonstrations as IBM’s Deep Blue beating Gary Kasparov at chess.
Gregory Carmichael (photograph: special to the click-Citizen)
Now we live on the earth of huge facts the place we have the skill to bring together and system big quantities of information, enabling distinctive realizations of artificial intelligence functions. AI is used to customise suggestions for movies, classify pictures to improve search engine efficiency, and supply dresser counsel. it's additionally enabling driverless automobiles, detecting ailments, maintaining flora and fauna, and helping HR departments in hiring and firing.
it is so pervasive that it is tough to distinguish actual from artificial. Is that voice on the cell making the reservation, answering my client service question, or offering healthcare counsel, precise or a Chatbot? Is that video of the president making a speech real or a Deepfake? it's getting tougher to inform.
but AI is right here to dwell and the traces will turn into much more blurred in the future. what's going to life be like with a digital group of workers, where more and more jobs are replaced by using machines and humans intermingle with robots in the workplace and the home? there's already the want in warehouses the usage of gigantic numbers of robots to have the human personnel identify themselves as “i'm not a robotic” with a view to steer clear of accidents. And child-sitting robots exist already.
Our relationship with sensible machines is also fitting blurred. these days we don’t simply fall in love through our phones. The 2013 film Her explored a relationship between man and laptop where Joaquin Phoenix falls in love along with his desktop's extremely advanced working equipment. lately a trainer in Japan married an anime hologram, giving new meaning to the time period digital relationship.
AI is changing the manner we reside, work, and play. but how can we be certain that the know-how is fair and ethical? be a part of us on February 12 for WorldCanvass: artificial Intelligence, the place a group of UI school and business leaders within the fields of engineering, expertise, schooling, medication, and enterprise will talk about the present impact of AI and what they see on the horizon. The software, which is free and open to the public, takes place at MERGE, 136 South Dubuque highway, Iowa city, from 5:30-7 p.m. All are invited to a pre-demonstrate reception from 5-5:30 p.m. additionally, the college of Iowa Informatics Initiative has organized an all-day symposium on artificial Intelligence on Friday, February 15, 2019 at the CPHB Atrium, 1st ground. This adventure is free and open to the general public. (See https://uiowa.edu/informaticsshowcase/ for additional particulars).
Gregory Carmichael is a professor in the UI department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and the director of the UI Informatics Initiative.

There have been a few attempts to create autonomous house robots which can carry out everyday chores like folding our clothes. A new robot created by Japanese company Mira Robotics puts a slightly different spin on things, however. They have developed a robot called Ugo, designed to help carry out a variety of household chores. The catch? That it’s remotely controlled by a teleoperator. In other words, it’s a bit like hiring a housekeeper with the difference that they never physically visit your home, but rather remote control a robot for a few hours each week.
This isn’t the first telepresence robot that we’ve covered. Telepresence robots have been used to make it possible for people to unwell kids to attend school — and even graduation ceremonies. Japan, meanwhile, recently tested an unusual cafe concept where diners were served by robot waiters operated remotely by paralyzed individuals, who controlled the robots from their own homes.
In the case of the Ugo robots, each bot is equipped with three cameras, a microphone, speaker, Wi-Fi, and LTE connectivity. While it’s quite limited in its movement (it can’t climb stairs, which will mean installing a ramp if you want it to freely move about your home), it does appear to be quite dextrous. As seen in the video up top, tasks that it is capable of include folding items of clothing, hanging up wet clothes, and potentially more.
According to a report from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Spectrum, the business plan for Ugo is that customers will rent it on a monthly basis for between $180 and $225 per month. Customers will then book in human operators to carry out work tasks for however many hours per week they need it. It’s not clear whether this cost will be included in the rental price or if it will be extra. The human operator will log in to teleoperate your robot for the number of hours or task required, before disconnecting again at the end. Long-term, the company hopes to start exploring autonomous actions on the part of the robots as well.
There’s no exact timeline for when all of this will be available to customers around the world. However, Mira supposedly plans for beta testing to begin in the near future. Full-scale deployment is hoped to begin sometime in 2020.

If you want an easy project to complete in a day or so, or something to introduce kids to the world of robots and electronics, make this light-following robot your weekend project. The concept is very simple, and could be built in an infinite number of ways, with parts that you may already have on hand. For now, though, I’ll tell you exactly how I made mine.Materials needed: Tools needed: Electronics assembly
I’ll first discuss the electronic circuit of the device, then explain how it’s actually assembled, as this can be done in a variety of ways. As shown in the above schematic, the positive side of the stacked batteries (connected in series for 6V) are wired to one side of each of the 6 LDRs. Three of these LDRs are arranged on the left side of the robot, and the non-battery lead of each is connected to the right motor. The other three LDRs are arranged on the right side, and the non-battery lead is connected to the left motor. The motor leads not connected to LDRs are applied to the negative battery connection, completing a circuit.
RELATED: Slipping into this ‘skin’ turns any object into a robot
The setup acts in such a way that when light is shined on the left LDR array, resistance to the right motor is lowered, and thus power is applied. This causes the motor to spin forward on the right side, turning it towards the light shining on the left array. The opposite effect will apply with the other three right LDRS and left motor, and if light is shined equally on both sides, the robot will travel forward. If either motor turns backwards, swap the battery and LDR leads.Mechanical Setup
To get these components to look like an actual moving robot, I first put a ½ inch slot in a piece of medium-density fiberboard with my milling machine, where the tiny motors could reside. A router or tablesaw could also be used for this task, if you’ve got it. I then used a 2¾-inch hole saw to cut out a circular assembly that would form the robot’s body with the slot in the middle. Finally, I traced the shape of a CR2032 batteries in the MDF behind the slot, and cut a rough cavity for the CR2032 batteries.
From here, I used the perf board to lay out the circuit, then arranged the wires so that when it’s attached to the MDF body with hot glue, the batteries are sandwiched between the + and – wires to supply power. (The wire was stripped back and rolled around the insulation.) The motors were held on with a combination of hot glue and the glued perf board, and wheels were drilled out to a diameter that could be pressed directly onto the gearmotors.
While this setup did work, in retrospect it would be easier to simply purchase a 6V coin cell holder with leads already available for a solid connection, especially if you don’t have a board lying around. Hot glue—even more hot glue, that is—could then be used to keep everything in place.
This is how I made the ‘bot shown in the video below. You could copy my methods step-by-step, create a 3D printed or otherwise carefully designed version, or simply start the build with the tools and materials at your disposal and see where it leads. As long as you can get the wheels to roll the device around, you’ll have something entertaining that follows a flashlight beam. You can make your frame out of wood, plastic, cardboard, or other readily-available materials.

FALMOUTH, England (Reuters) - Can robots be creative? British gallery owner Aidan Meller hopes to go some way towards answering that question with Ai-Da, who her makers say will be able to draw people from sight with a pencil in her bionic hand.
Meller is overseeing the final stages of her construction by engineers at Cornwall-based Engineered Arts.
He calls Ai-Da - named after British mathematician and computer pioneer Ada Lovelace - the world’s first “AI ultra-realistic robot artist”, and his ambition is for her to perform like her human equivalents.
“She’s going to actually be drawing and we’re hoping to then build technology for her to paint,” Meller said after seeing Ai-Da’s prosthetic head being carefully brought to life by specialists individually attaching hairs to form her eyebrows.
“But also as a performance artist she’ll be able to engage with audiences and actually get messages across; asking those questions about technology today.”
Her skeletal robotic head may stand disembodied on a workbench, but her movements are very much alive.
Cameras in each of her eyeballs recognize human features - she will make eye contact and follow you around the room, opening and closing her mouth as you do. Get too close and she’ll back away, blinking, as if in shock.
Ai-Da’s makers say she will have a “RoboThespian” body with expressive movements and she will talk and answer questions.
“There’s AI (artificial intelligence) running in the computer vision that allows the robot to track faces to recognize facial features and to mimic your expression,” said Marcus Hold, Design & Production Engineer at Engineered Arts.Slideshow (6 Images)
Ai-Da’s makers are using “Mesmer” life-like robot technology for her head, and once finished she will have a mixed race appearance with long dark hair, silicone skin and 3D printed teeth and gums.
“(Mesmer) brings together the development of software mechanics and electronics to produce a lifelike face with lifelike gestures in a small human sized package,” Hold said.
Ai-Da will present her inaugural exhibition “Unsecured Futures” in May at the University of Oxford, and her sketches will go on display in London in November.
