Data Storage EquipmentContinues to Invest in Storage Innovation to Help Clients Speed Delivery of Data for New Workloads
ARMONK, N.Y., Oct. 7 - IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced innovative new storage systems that are optimized for workloads such as transaction processing and real-time analytics, reflecting the company's $6 billion annual investment in R&D.
Among the new products is a midrange disk storage system, called the IBM Storwize V7000, designed to efficiently and cost effectively manage the torrent of data flowing into companies so it can be swiftly delivered for such workloads as transaction processing -- like the growing volume of transactions completed from the Web and mobile and embedded devices.
The IBM Storwize V7000 system can help simplify administrative tasks such as set up and management. The new system can reduce storage rack space by up to 67% when compared with competitive offerings, allowing room for clients' future growth (1). It also includes a highly-integrated set of advanced software for storage efficiency that frees clients from buying piece-parts or making trade-offs between price and capability.
Demand for storage capacity worldwide will continue to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 49.8 percent from 2009-2014, according to IDC (2). Businesses are struggling with the volume and evolving nature of the data they're already collecting. They're under tremendous pressure to turn this data into insight, and grappling with how they're going to store and secure it all. IBM continues to develop innovative storage technologies, using its significant R&D spending to help clients not only manage data proliferation, but harness data to create insights for competitive advantages.
The new storage systems IBM is announcing today build on other storage innovations from IBM -- driven by billions of dollars spent on R&D and strategic storage acquisitions. They include technologies that can eliminate the need to repeatedly make copies of the same data; scale-out storage technologies to support growth -- particularly of unstructured data like video and photos -- and high-performance workloads like cloud computing; and technologies to place the most critical data on fast, dynamic storage devices so it can be more quickly made available for workloads like analytics and mobile transaction processing. Examples include:
o IBM System Storage Easy Tier software, which was invented by IBM Research and can improve performance by up to 200% (3). Easy Tier automatically moves the most active data (such as credit card transactions) to faster solid-state drives (SSDs) to prioritize and provide quick access to data for emerging workloads like analytics, while moving secondary data (less urgent data to be saved, for example, for regulatory requirements) to more cost-effective storage technologies;
o The IBM ProtecTIER deduplication technology that IBM acquired in 2008 to help clients eliminate duplicate copies of data and significantly improve storage efficiency;
o The IBM Real-time Compression Appliances -- technology that IBM acquired earlier this year to help clients reduce physical storage requirements by up to 80%, based on data from currently installed appliances (4);
o The XIV high-end disk storage architecture that IBM acquired in 2008. XIV's architecture enables it to adapt to changing workloads and deliver consistent high performance;
o IBM's Scale-out Network Attached Storage (SONAS), invented by IBM Research to support multiple petabytes of storage in a single file system. Clients can also use XIV and SONAS together to create a complete cloud storage solution; and
o The IBM Information Archive, which combines tape and disk storage to deliver clients a tiered storage system that can protect data for long-term retention while helping optimize costs.
The IBM Storwize V7000 system further demonstrates that IBM is sharing its most innovative storage technologies across its portfolio. For example, the system includes a graphical user interface (GUI) modeled after the popular XIV user interface designed to significantly reduce system set up and administration; Easy Tier software; and industry-leading storage virtualization software that has been shown to double productivity (5).
IBM also introduced today a range of other storage products, including:
o IBM System Storage DS8800, which based on internal studies, can offer up to 40 percent faster performance than its predecessor, the IBM System Storage DS8700 (6). The DS8800 will next year support IBM Easy Tier.
o Updated SAN Volume Controller software that includes Easy Tier, an improved administrator GUI and increased scalability as compared to the previous version of the technology;
o IBM Systems Director Storage Control software that manages storage, servers and network technology through a single interface, reducing storage management complexity, risk and cost;
o IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center v4.2 software that has been enhanced for midrange systems; and
o Implementation Services for Disk Systems - IBM Storwize V7000, using highly skilled storage specialists who will provide planning, implementation, configuration, testing and basic skills instruction. Using IBM services will enable clients to use in-house resources for higher priority business initiatives and can accelerate the return on investment in IBM storage technology.
"Organizations are struggling with the volume and evolving nature of the data they're already collecting. The IBM Storwize V7000 will deliver clients a new level of storage efficiency that can help them better store and secure their data," said Brian Truskowski, general manager of IBM storage. "IBM is combining home-grown storage innovations like our Easy Tier technology together with acquisitions of industry leading storage technologies such as XIV to deliver our clients a truly unmatched portfolio of storage solutions."

Computer Associates, HP, IBM, Microsoft and others are making big promises with new systems aimed at helping datacenter customers more effectively cut costs, reduce complexity and control resources - all with less human intervention.
While the potential for such self-managing systems - typically referred to as utility computing - is appealing, reality and history suggest the technology has a long way to go before users reap any significant benefits.
HP is expected this week to flesh out its plans for utility computing, whereby customers can build networks that dynamically respond to changing conditions and ensure that business applications get the network, server and storage capacity they need on demand. Specifically, the vendor is expected to announce new virtualization tools for pooling disparate data center resources, building on its Adaptive Infrastructure Platform announced in November.
CA, IBM and Sun (with its N1 family of products) recently have unveiled their own utility computing products. Likewise, Microsoft announced Dynamic Systems Initiative (DSI), its multiyear plan to create a self-managing Windows environment that exploits XML-based technology, built into applications, operating systems and management tools.
Detractors of these large-scale initiatives say that in their current iterations, many utility computing plans focus too much on a single vendor. And there are no standards, promising a nightmare of integration issues for users.
"The concept, the approach and the reason for doing utility computing make a lot of sense. But getting customers to change their thought processes and how they buy equipment is not something that you just turn the light on and it comes," says Jamie Gruener, a senior analyst with The Yankee Group.
Reality checkWhile the vision of utility computing sounds good, reality will be something more challenging. Culture shock: Utility computing will force datacenters to eliminate any facet of “silo-centric” operations. For utility computing to work, the database staff would have to implement the same tools and processes as the application development team, which will fall in line with the server department, which need to cooperate with the network administrators and so on. Ghosts of technology past: Remember the word “framework,” from which self-pronounced on-demand vendors such as IBM Tivoli and CA still work hard to distance themselves? It’s back — but now vendors prefer to use the term “integration.” Bills due: Network executives should count on part of the bill for a potentially pricey utility computing rollout to include services either to the product vendor or systems integrators and professional services companies. Unclear demand: Industry watchers say most corporations aren’t really ready for utility computing. The business model and requirements for it are not clear.
Fundamental differences in the ways IT staff work will complicate the adoption of utility computing, says John Payton, project manager of infrastructure design and implementation at R.R. Donnelley, a Chicago publishing and manufacturing company.
"In many organizations, the applications group doesn't talk with the infrastructure team, and one group's measure of productivity doesn't wash with the other's measure," Payton says. "That represents a huge barrier and real serious issues for companies that might want to look at utility computing."
The biggest obstacles today are human and political, says Mike Gilpin, vice president and research manager at Giga Information Group. "To the extent that the current budget holders have to relinquish control of their budgeted computing resources to a shared pool, many will be reluctant to do that until they have more proof that they will still get at least as good a service level as they do today," he says.
Joe Schinker, a network engineer at call center provider West in Omaha, Neb., says he needs more information from vendors before he'll believe the utility computing hype. "My question to vendors is, 'What is the business model or requirement they have heard from customers or potential customers to bring this offering to market?'" Schinker says.
On the flip side, one user who finds the idea of a more automated computing infrastructure compelling is George Fiedorowicz, vice president of technology operations for Concord EFS, a Memphis, Tenn., provider of electronic transaction-processing and funds-transfer services. Utility computing promises a more efficient future for his company's IT organization, which must oversubscribe its computing resources to handle peak demand, such as around the heavy retail seasons, when electronic transactions skyrocket.
"Let's face it, every IT shop is fairly lean these days," Fiedorowicz says. "Anything that can help you provide better [quality of service] is worth examining."
Building an on-demand portfolio
IBM used the setting of its annual analyst event, held last week in Palisades, N.Y., to introduce its latest utility-based products and purchasing options, each aimed at giving users more control over how they use and pay for computing power.
New to its storage management lineup are virtualization tools that let disparate storage resources be managed together and reprovisioned as conditions change.
Virtualization technologies are seen as key components of utility computing, as they let customers divide pool-server or storage resources logically. In the server arena, for example, companies such as Connectix, SW-Soft and VMware provide software that lets Intel servers emulate the software-partitioning and virtual-machine capabilities of bigger Unix servers from HP, IBM and Sun, and mainframes from IBM.
Forthcoming WebSphere software will let companies manage business applications running on different servers as a single environment. Adaptive Server Allocation for WebSphere Application Server will be embedded in future versions of IBM's application server, but IBM declined to say when.
For CFOs, IBM introduced Open Infrastructure Offering, a pricing scheme that lets customers pay for their hardware, software and services with one fixed monthly payment.
In addition, IBM is extending its Standby Capacity On Demand options to some of its blade servers and storage systems, letting users buy excess capacity and tap into it as necessary. Under the plan, eServer BladeCenter users can purchase seven blades but receive a fully configured 14-blade system, with the option to turn on the additional blades over a six-month period. Similarly, users of IBM's TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server will have access to 6.9 terabytes of additional storage capacity.
What's significant about the announcements is that IBM is translating what was until now just an idea into actual products and services that span its server, storage, software and business consulting divisions, says Ted Schadler, principal analyst at Forrester Research. "The thing that makes it most credible is that every single product group and services group is on board," he says.
CA joins utility bandwagon
A relative newcomer to the utility computing fray, CA last week unveiled its first products for managing on-demand computing environments.
CA Chairman and CEO Sanjay Kumar used his NetWorld+Interop keynote address to introduce the company's on-demand computing strategy, which centers on helping companies migrate toward utility computing without overhauling their systems and networks.
"It's not about switching out servers; it's not about the latest generation of hardware; it's about using what you have more effectively and efficiently," Kumar said.
New offerings include Unicenter Network and Systems Management 3.1, which now lets organizations better track available IT infrastructure capacity. The new Unicenter NSM Dynamic Reconfiguration Option can be used to oversee business service levels, anticipating when more capacity will be needed.
CA also aired new versions of its software distribution, asset management, help desk and webMethods application server management tools, all of which CA says play a role in supporting its vision for a more self-managing computing environment.
Cynthia Luman, vice president of computer operations for CA customer CSX Technology, the IT arm of railroad giant CSX, says she looks forward to a more automated computing environment in which problems can be resolved faster and service levels can be managed better.
"There's still too much manual effort involved," Luman said, referring to the effort needed to manage the Jacksonville, Fla., company's mainframes and hundreds of servers. "It prevents our administrators from working on more strategic things."Join the Network World communities on Facebook and LinkedIn to comment on topics that are top of mind.
