if you like IBM‘s Power5 hardware, which has about as a great deal horsepower under the skins as any server obtainable, and also you like Linux, you're likely going to just like the new line of Linux-handiest servers from IBM, called the eServer OpenPower machines. And in case you like the OS/four hundred platform, like I do, you're going to probably be questioning why IBM can’t supply such a good deal as it has with the OpenPowers on puppy OS/400 servers.
inserting out the OpenServer machines, as IBM did remaining week, makes ultimate experience. The OpenPowers have some thing approaching X86 expenses for what's arguably midrange OS/four hundred-Unix iron. IBM hopes the OpenPower machines will kickstart client and ISV enthusiasm for operating Linux applications on IBM’s power structure. massive Blue is hoping that it can experience up the Linux wave and enhance the volumes of its Power5 machines because it receives tougher to boost volumes within the RISC/Unix market. here is all well and respectable. but the OpenServers may also make AIX clients suppose a bit chilly, and OS/400 shops feeling disregarded within the cold.
IBM has offered Linux as an operating gadget choice on its pSeries Power4 server line for greater than a 12 months, and has been offering Linux within logical partitions on its iSeries line for a number of years. The OpenPowers are a little bit different, in that IBM is really making a computing device that has an deliberately lessen rate and that could be limited to running only Linux working programs from pink Hat or Novell and purposes compiled for Linux.
The factors IBM has decided to launch a Linux-simplest power server line (whatever we heard about as a chance greater than a yr ago) with very aggressive pricing, in comparison with the i5 and p5 lines (that are according to the same exact hardware), are complicated. first off, now that rivals solar Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard have sorted out their Unix server thoughts (at the least in comparison with two years ago, when solar become residing in denial and HP changed into in the midst of explaining its consolidation strategy within the wake of the Compaq acquisition), it's tougher to make a RISC/Unix deal fully in response to the cost of the hardware. HP and sun, principally now that the Integrity line has been fleshed out right to bottom and sun has embraced the Opteron processors in its entry and midrange solar fireplace line, greater or less have brilliant platform plans and pricing in the Unix space. lamentably, now that Linux 2.4 is smartly permitted pretty much as good ample to do many Unix-vogue jobs, the Unix market is eyeing Lintel iron as a replacement for getting older RISC/Unix iron. The introduction of Linux 2.6, which is more scalable, respectable, and usable (thanks in large measure to a higher job scheduler and workload manager), most effective makes Linux an easier promote to Unix shops that gasp on the excessive costs Unix carriers charge for his or her RISC hardware and Unix working techniques.
in response to Jim McGaughan, director of eServer method at IBM, the OpenPower line is starting with a 4U, OpenPower 720 computer today, which comes with single core, twin core, and quad core options. (The Power5 chip has two vigor cores, and a mannequin 720 can have one or two Power5 chip modules, depending on the configuration.) McGaughan says that IBM will carry a 2U kind component Power5 laptop early subsequent 12 months (doubtless with one- or two-core alternatives). If the market demands it, IBM might effectively create a broader line of OpenPower machines that span from one Power5 core to as many as 64, which is what the longer term p5 590 server, due any day now, will present IBM’s Unix purchasers. If IBM needed to create a low-powered Linux field, it may even slug the Power5 chips, activating only 1 core and clocking it at half and even one-quarter pace (because it does in the eServer i5 line), and supplying an excellent lower performance and value point into the Linux market. On the other end of the spectrum, Linux 2.6 scales fairly neatly to 16-means SMP processing, and Linux purposes are doubtless now not able to scale a good deal past eight-method SMP, so an eight-way OpenPower box is likely the practical and fundamental proper-end limit for this type of Linux-only server. just as is the case for 32-bit and 64-bit X86 iron, by the way.
With the OpenPower machines, no count number how a long way up or down IBM scales them, large Blue is attempting to create a new hybrid RISC/Linux choice that shoots the gap between Lintel iron and RISC/Unix iron, providing Unix performance with pricing that approaches that of the better-volume Linux on X86 systems. “The chatter from our competitors previous this announcement has been reasonably high,” says McGaughan. “And the candy spot during this market is for two-way servers. We understand it, and they comprehend it.” You may suppose IBM would have launched a two-approach server first then, but getting the Power5 chips right down to a 2U kind ingredient is not a simple feat, and it'll take a bit time. “The OpenPower line introduces some truly enjoyable dynamics for the trade, and IBM knows now, unlike it may have a decade ago, that you just get a one-time shot at these markets. it's why we are popping out with weapons blazing.” As for self-have an effect on, he says IBM is smartly aware that this is going to happen, that some consumers who might have purchased an AIX platform will now purchase and OpenPower and choose Linux. He quoted the historical adage in IT: in case you don’t consume your own lunch, a person else will.
The OpenPower 720 comes in three variations, which may be attainable on September 24. the bottom laptop has a single 1.5GHz Power5 core activated, and it could actually best have one core activated although technically the Power5 frame can assist two chips and 4 cores. (IBM is doubtless employing Power5 chips where half of the chip doesn’t work.) For $5,000, this base computer comes with 512 MB of main memory, a single 36 GB disk (10K RPM), redundant power and cooling, and an enclosure for conserving 4 SCSI disk drives. the two-approach OpenPower 720 container can use either 1.5 GHz or 1.sixty five GHz Power5 cores and springs with 1 GB of leading memory and a 36 GB disk; with two 1.5 GHz cores, this desktop costs $8,000, and with two 1.65 GHz cores, it expenses $9,250. It prices a further $5,500 to add one more Power5 module with two 1.5 GHz cores grew to become on and a different $6,750 to add two 1.sixty five GHz cores. in all probability most startling, IBM is charging lots less cash for the accurate identical main memory and disk drives within the OpenPower packing containers as it fees for the i5 and p5 versions of the machines. main reminiscence costs from $640 for a 1GB DIMM (forty two p.c cheaper than on the i5 and p5) to $2,800 for a 4 GB DIMM (21 percent more affordable). 10K RPM disk drives latitude in rate from $275 for a 36 GB disk to $699 for a 146 GB disk. IBM is charging between 63 and 69 percent less for these disks than it does for i5 and p5 machines, and with 15K RPM disks, IBM has slashed the expenditures through 72 to seventy four p.c.
So how do these OpenPower server expenditures stack as much as compare to configured IBM eServer p5 and i5 machines? Let’s do the p5s first, since it's a cleaner evaluation. A two-approach p5 model 520 with 1.sixty five GHz cores, 2 GB of main memory, and a 36 GB force costs $10,800, in comparison to $9,760 for an OpenPower 720 with the identical configuration. (These fees don't include an working equipment.) both of those machines come with common logical partitioning (the place the granularity most effective goes right down to the core degree). both OpenPower and p5 consumers have to purchase the superior Virtualization Engine features–which offer micropartitioning of up to 10 partitions per CPU plus virtualized I/O and LAN guide–one by one. It charges a flat $2,000 on the OpenPower machines, and $590 per CPU on the p5 machines in this equal four-way vigour category. An eServer p5 model 550 with two 1.65 GHz cores, 4 GB of leading reminiscence, and two seventy three GB disks sells for $20,540, however a in a similar way configured OpenPower 720 will simplest ought to pay $eleven,625 for the same iron. In a 4-way configuration the use of 1.65 GHz cores, a p5 550 with 8 GB of memory and two 73 GB disks costs $32,487, whereas the OpenPower 720 with the same specs prices $20,675.
There is not any strategy to evaluate raw i5 iron to the OpenPower iron due to the fact the entry i5 model 520 categorical machines come with an working equipment, a database, and a fixed volume of eco-friendly-monitor processing energy. but you could back out of it one more approach. if you configure the same two-means i5 mannequin 550, you can see what the true top rate IBM is charging for using i5/OS V5R3 and DB2/400. An i5 mannequin 550 with two 1.65GHz Power5 cores activated, 4 GB of main reminiscence, and 146 GB of disk, working OS/400 standard edition without a interactive processing potential however having DB2/four hundred built-in, charges $126,350. The equal exact iron within the OpenPower 720 line costs $11,625 devoid of an operating gadget, and $13,625 with the Virtualization Engine partitioning elements. while IBM will say that some of that fee difference has to do with lessen CPU, memory, and disk expenses IBM has for the OpenPowers, it is nonsense. what's really happening is that IBM is charging a further $112,725 to run i5/OS and DB2/four hundred on the equal actual server. And in case you need to use 5250 green-display processing potential on the equal box, you should set up i5/OS V5R3 on that same server, which expenses an additional $292,000. Assuming that IBM makes no funds on the OpenPower field during this comparison and assuming that i5/OS probably only prices IBM a number of grand to make and assist (say $400 per CPU for i5/OS and $2,500 per CPU for DB2/400), that could appear to imply that the gross gains on an i5 model 550 with two processors and full-on eco-friendly-display ability are in the range of 97 %. consider about that for a minute. For every i5 model 550 IBM sells, it will probably subsidize about 4 OpenPower 720s and nevertheless turn roughly 20 p.c gross earnings on all five servers.
Linux charges come nowhere near these bundled i5/OS and DB/400 tiers, partially because IBM has special discount offers with red Hat and Novell to get commercial Linux on these machines (as well as on the i5 and p5) at reduce expenditures than is purchasable directly from these vendors. you could get SuSE Linux commercial enterprise Server 9 (which is the stage supported on the Power5 boxes) via IBM for $689 for a device that has up to two processors, and for $1,299 for any gadget that spans from 1 to 16 processors. unlike Novell, purple Hat doesn’t charge per equipment (in spite of the number of partitions), however per Linux illustration on a server within partitions, although there is only one partition (that means it is in impact an SMP server). through IBM, that you would be able to get crimson Hat commercial enterprise Linux AS three update 3 (which is required on the Power5 machines) for $995 on a two-approach laptop or partition and for $1,295 on a partition or computer that spans as much as an eight-method instance. McGaughan says that IBM will launch its own digital technical help provider at the side of purple Hat and Novell, probably sometime within the fourth quarter, so IBM’s consumers can get the identical one-contact with world services for assist for Linux as they get for OS/four hundred and AIX. (purple Hat and Novell are backing up theses choices with degree 3 guide, simply as they do for identical HP features.)
incidentally, there is some nonsense talk going round that the Power5-Linux bins do not need any functions. The actuality is, IBM has about 600 Linux applications purchasable for vigour-Linux, which compares decently to the 750 applications in the pink Hat-on-X86 portfolio or even the Itanium portfolio, which had about 400 functions spanning home windows, Linux, and Unix through the end of 2003. McGaughan says that any PowerPC or Power4 Linux software can run on the Power5 machines with the exception of functions above all compiled to take abilities of the VMX vector co-processor in the PowerPC 970 processors utilized in IBM’s BladeCenter blade servers. Any vigour-Linux utility that doesn't use these VMX capabilities will run even on the PowerPC 970.
What the OpenPower announcement makes clear is that i5 and p5 customers are being asked to subsidize IBM’s aggressive strikes into the Linux house, tons as OS/400 retail outlets have subsidized IBM’s aggressive strikes into the Unix market considering the fact that 1997. The OpenPower announcement is tremendous news for IBM’s competencies Linux shoppers, however is probably no longer so super for the midrange retail outlets who don't seem to be getting such favorable pricing for his or her Power5 hardware. but IBM has to do whatever thing to pump up Linux on energy above all and vigour server volumes generally, and here's a pretty good tactic notwithstanding it isn't specifically reasonable (some thing on the planet that may mean in the company world).
The truth is, in these days’s the server company, there are a couple of other ways that server makers can differentiate their products. one way is to create a single server hardware platform that helps as many different working gadget systems as is technically feasible and economically useful. here is the method HP is the use of to champion its Integrity line of Itanium servers (which assist windows, Linux, Unix, and soon OpenVMS); in a similar fashion, IBM has used a distinctive OS approach to prop up income of its zSeries mainframes (which assist a few mainframe operating techniques plus Linux and an AIX runtime environment) and its iSeries midrange gear (which have run OS/400 and Linux for years and which now guide AIX with the eServer i5 machines launched in might also).
The other method to differentiation is the one which IBM has excited about the eServer line in a broader feel with the “Squadron” Power5 servers. IBM is growing versions of the Power5 frames which are in accordance with the exact same hardware, however fluctuate from each and every other in working gadget options, microcode and partitioning elements, and pricing. The eServer i5 mannequin 550, the eServer p5 550, and the OpenPower 720 are all based on the actual identical hardware, but they're bought with very diverse alternate options on suitable of that hardware with very different pricing. and also you cannot “improve” from one field into an additional. You should make your platform alternative ahead of time, and are living with it.
With the HP Integrity approach, you get an financial price (which is hard to quantify) in for you to run a number of different working gadget platforms on the equal field either on the same time or in a collection over the route of the technical and financial life of that server. HP costs an attractive hefty top class for this multi-OS means, which is the hallmark of its Integrity line, compared to what it charges for processing capability on its ProLiant X86 server line. With the IBM eServer method, IBM has been promoting the same basic hardware with expenses that rely on how you use it. IBM used to discriminate against AS/400 and iSeries clients who had been purchasing PowerPC or Power4 iron compared to the more affordable RS/6000 and pSeries iron based on exactly the same hardware. With the Power5 line, IBM has locked the i5 and p5 hardware expenses, and is differentiating at the software level. OS/400 has legacy green-monitor utility guide and an built-in database, and IBM charges a extremely hefty top class for these capabilities, which it will possibly do since it has a monopoly on machines that help RPG and COBOL purposes that run atop of the DB2/400 database. With the Power5 launch this 12 months, IBM has shifted all of the top class it used to can charge for AS/400 and iSeries servers into the brand new i5/OS working system. Now, AIX has become a sort of legacy environment of its own (as has HP’s PA-RISC machines operating AIX and sun’s UltraSparc-III and UltraSparc-IV platforms working Solaris), and IBM is compelled to cost a top rate for Power5 iron working even AIX–at the least compared to that upstart, Linux.
Like Unix was the expense/efficiency driver of the Nineteen Nineties, Linux is shaping as much as be the catalyst for the largest bang for the buck in the 2000s.

Sirius, founded in 1980, is a privately held company and a Premier IBM Business Partner headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. In 2003, Sirius was the largest IBM eServer iSeries(tm) provider in the world, was named by IBM as the top IBM eServer pSeries(R) Solution Provider in the Americas, and was a leading IBM eServer xSeries(R) and Storage Solution Provider. Sirius has approximately 350 employees and has consistently shown YTY revenue growth with over $300M in total revenues in 2003.
DSG, headquartered in Denver, Colo., was founded in 1991 and has grown to $190M in revenues and approximately 150 employees. DSG, also a nationwide Premier IBM Business Partner, was the second-largest IBM eServer zSeries Solution Provider in 2003, as well as a leading IBM Storage and IBM Printing Solutions Provider.
Both companies have achieved these results by leveraging their knowledge of IBM products to provide leading-edge technology solutions for their customers, as evidenced by IBM awarding a 2004 Beacon Award to each company:
-- Sirius received the Best IBM iSeries on Demand Solution Provider Award.
-- DSG received an award for Commitment to New IBM Customer Acquisition with Printing System Division Offerings.
Combined, Sirius and DSG will provide the entire IBM product line to companies across the United States, and their complementary product expertise will result in even more comprehensive IBM solutions to companies seeking a true technology partner.
DSG will operate as the Sirius Enterprise Systems Group LLC and will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Sirius Computer Solutions. Tom Engleby will assume the role of president of the Sirius Enterprise Systems Group. Sirius Computer Solutions and the Sirius Enterprise Systems Group will have over 60 locations across the United States, over 280 certified sales and technical professionals, more than 750 IBM certifications and anticipated 2004 pro forma revenues in excess of $550M.
"This acquisition fulfills the most important part of Sirius' Business Growth Strategy -- to offer our customers the entire IBM server line," said Harvey Najim, president and CEO of Sirius. "Sirius' customers are increasingly depending on us to provide them with strategic and technical assistance no matter what server platform is required for their critical applications. The industry trends of server consolidation and on-demand computing relies on powerful and reliable servers, and in many cases the IBM eServer zSeries is the clear choice."
IBM requires that business partners be certified and experienced in the products they sell. The designation of IBM Premier Business Partner carries significantly higher requirements, including excellent customer satisfaction ratings, increased technical competency, financial strength and IBM investment. Sirius and DSG have consistently achieved the Premier level, and have been recognized as industry leaders for IBM solutions.
"We are very excited to be a part of Sirius," said Tom Engleby, president and CEO of DSG. "Most of our customers deploy applications that run on multiple server platforms. This partnership will allow us to leverage the wealth and resources that Sirius and DSG offer, resulting in a complete end-to-end solution for both our customer sets."

CLECs Have More Choices Than Ever for a Powerful Interactive Agent Platform
OLD LYME, Conn., Feb. 16 - Lymeware Corporation, an innovative provider of Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) and Telecom software solutions, announced today the availability of its IAgent3 Interactive Agent product for Linux on all IBMR eServer(TM) platforms. This new version of the popular IAgent3 Secure Messaging Interactive Agent (IA) product now supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux on IBM eServer xSeries, iSeries, pSeries, zSeries, OpenPower and BladeCenter servers.
The Lymeware IAgent3 product is a conformal implementation of the Telecommunications Industry Forum (TCIF/ECIC) Electronic Communications Interactive Agent (TCIF 98-006 issue 2 and issue 3 IA), which allows secure EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) transactions over insecure networks, dedicated connections or the Internet via strong encryption, using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) open standards.
The Interactive Agent protocol is the U.S. Telecommunications industry standard integration interface for wholesale ordering and pre-ordering of services and network elements, and is either supported or required by all of the major Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILECs).
The commerce-class IAgent3 product is currently used by CLECs across the nation to connect with all of the top ILECs and provides integration interfaces to CLEC Operation Support Systems (OSS) and ordering systems. A version of the IAgent3 product for Service Bureau companies (capable of supporting multiple CLECs to multiple ILECs from a single IA platform) is also available.
Lymeware leveraged the IBM eServer(TM) Application Advantage(TM) for Linux (Chiphopper(TM)) offering pilot program to achieve availability on all IBM eServer platforms - and also to achieve Linux Standards Base 2.0 application certification on POWER (ppc32). The Chiphopper offering provides code-checking tools, technical support and access to IBM eServer platforms and middleware platforms. It also provides LSB certification test suites and consulting support as an optional feature. Lymeware took advantage of this excellent support to become the one of the first applications certified to the LSB 2.0, on Novell's SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9.
"IBM's assistance was instrumental in allowing us to quickly port and test our IAgent3 product on Linux across the eServer family of platforms," declared Michael Kobar, Chief Technology Officer, Lymeware. "We are now able to provide our product to customers on everything from a desktop, to a high-end server, all the way up to a mainframe, and all from the same code base."
Lymeware has provided a robust, secure, fast transport of EDI and non-EDI messages and electronic messaging since 1999, and has extensive IA configuration and ILEC connectivity experience.
A free 30-day evaluation of the full IAgent3 product is available upon request.
