if you like IBM‘s Power5 hardware, which has about as plenty horsepower under the skins as any server out there, and you like Linux, you're probably going to like the new line of Linux-only servers from IBM, known as the eServer OpenPower machines. And in case you like the OS/four hundred platform, like I do, you're going to doubtless be wondering why IBM can’t supply such a very good deal because it has with the OpenPowers on puppy OS/400 servers.
inserting out the OpenServer machines, as IBM did closing week, makes perfect experience. The OpenPowers have something drawing near X86 prices for what is arguably midrange OS/four hundred-Unix iron. IBM hopes the OpenPower machines will kickstart customer and ISV enthusiasm for running Linux applications on IBM’s vigour architecture. big Blue is hoping that it will probably ride up the Linux wave and enhance the volumes of its Power5 machines as it gets tougher to increase volumes within the RISC/Unix market. this is all neatly and respectable. however the OpenServers may make AIX consumers think a little chilly, and OS/four hundred shops feeling overlooked in the cold.
IBM has offered Linux as an operating system choice on its pSeries Power4 server line for greater than a yr, and has been offering Linux within logical partitions on its iSeries line for a couple of years. The OpenPowers are a bit bit different, in that IBM is basically creating a laptop that has an deliberately lessen cost and that might be confined to working simplest Linux operating techniques from purple Hat or Novell and applications compiled for Linux.
The factors IBM has decided to launch a Linux-simplest energy server line (some thing we heard about as a probability greater than a 12 months in the past) with very aggressive pricing, compared with the i5 and p5 lines (which might be according to the equal actual hardware), are advanced. firstly, now that opponents sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard have sorted out their Unix server ideas (at least in comparison with two years ago, when solar changed into living in denial and HP turned into in the course of explaining its consolidation method within the wake of the Compaq acquisition), it is more durable to make a RISC/Unix deal completely in keeping with the rate of the hardware. HP and solar, primarily now that the Integrity line has been fleshed out excellent to bottom and sun has embraced the Opteron processors in its entry and midrange sun hearth line, greater or less have good platform plans and pricing within the Unix area. unluckily, now that Linux 2.4 is neatly authorised pretty much as good satisfactory to do many Unix-style jobs, the Unix market is eyeing Lintel iron as a alternative for growing old RISC/Unix iron. The advent of Linux 2.6, which is greater scalable, professional, and usable (thanks in colossal measure to an improved job scheduler and workload supervisor), handiest makes Linux a less complicated sell to Unix stores that gasp at the excessive costs Unix providers can charge for their RISC hardware and Unix operating programs.
in accordance with Jim McGaughan, director of eServer strategy at IBM, the OpenPower line is beginning with a 4U, OpenPower 720 laptop nowadays, which comes with single core, twin core, and quad core alternate options. (The Power5 chip has two power cores, and a model 720 can have one or two Power5 chip modules, depending on the configuration.) McGaughan says that IBM will deliver a 2U kind ingredient Power5 computer early next year (probably with one- or two-core alternate options). If the market calls for it, IBM could effortlessly create a broader line of OpenPower machines that span from one Power5 core to as many as sixty four, which is what the future p5 590 server, due any day now, will offer IBM’s Unix shoppers. If IBM vital to create a low-powered Linux container, it could even slug the Power5 chips, activating only one core and clocking it at half or even one-quarter speed (because it does in the eServer i5 line), and supplying an excellent lessen efficiency and price element into the Linux market. On the different end of the spectrum, Linux 2.6 scales pretty well to sixteen-manner SMP processing, and Linux purposes are likely not able to scale much beyond eight-approach SMP, so an eight-means OpenPower field is doubtless the useful and quintessential good-conclusion restrict for this sort of Linux-most effective server. simply as is the case for 32-bit and 64-bit X86 iron, by the way.
With the OpenPower machines, no be counted how far up or down IBM scales them, large Blue is making an attempt to create a brand new hybrid RISC/Linux option that shoots the gap between Lintel iron and RISC/Unix iron, providing Unix efficiency with pricing that tactics that of the larger-quantity Linux on X86 structures. “The chatter from our competitors previous this announcement has been fairly high,” says McGaughan. “And the candy spot in this market is for two-approach servers. We comprehend it, and they know it.” You might feel IBM would have launched a two-approach server first then, however getting the Power5 chips all the way down to a 2U kind component isn't an easy feat, and it will take a little time. “The OpenPower line introduces some truly interesting dynamics for the trade, and IBM knows now, in contrast to it might have a decade ago, that you get a one-time shot at these markets. this is why we're coming out with weapons blazing.” As for self-have an effect on, he says IBM is neatly conscious that this is going to turn up, that some shoppers who may have purchased an AIX platform will now buy and OpenPower and choose Linux. He quoted the old adage in IT: in case you don’t devour your personal lunch, somebody else will.
The OpenPower 720 comes in three variations, which should be purchasable on September 24. the base computing device has a single 1.5GHz Power5 core activated, and it might simplest have one core activated although technically the Power5 frame can help two chips and four cores. (IBM is probably making use of Power5 chips the place half of the chip doesn’t work.) For $5,000, this base computing device comes with 512 MB of leading memory, a single 36 GB disk (10K RPM), redundant vigor and cooling, and an enclosure for preserving 4 SCSI disk drives. both-method OpenPower 720 box can use either 1.5 GHz or 1.65 GHz Power5 cores and is derived with 1 GB of main reminiscence and a 36 GB disk; with two 1.5 GHz cores, this laptop fees $eight,000, and with two 1.65 GHz cores, it expenses $9,250. It charges another $5,500 so as to add an additional Power5 module with two 1.5 GHz cores became on and yet another $6,750 so as to add two 1.65 GHz cores. in all probability most startling, IBM is charging a lot much less funds for the exact same main memory and disk drives within the OpenPower packing containers because it expenses for the i5 and p5 variants of the machines. leading memory prices from $640 for a 1GB DIMM (forty two percent more affordable than on the i5 and p5) to $2,800 for a four GB DIMM (21 % more affordable). 10K RPM disk drives latitude in cost from $275 for a 36 GB disk to $699 for a 146 GB disk. IBM is charging between 63 and sixty nine percent much less for these disks than it does for i5 and p5 machines, and with 15K RPM disks, IBM has slashed the expenses by means of 72 to seventy four p.c.
So how do these OpenPower server expenditures stack up to compare to configured IBM eServer p5 and i5 machines? Let’s do the p5s first, because it is a cleaner evaluation. A two-manner p5 model 520 with 1.sixty five GHz cores, 2 GB of main memory, and a 36 GB force costs $10,800, compared to $9,760 for an OpenPower 720 with the equal configuration. (These expenses don't include an operating gadget.) both of these machines include regular logical partitioning (where the granularity most effective goes down to the core degree). both OpenPower and p5 consumers ought to buy the superior Virtualization Engine elements–which offer micropartitioning of as much as 10 partitions per CPU plus virtualized I/O and LAN aid–one after the other. It prices a flat $2,000 on the OpenPower machines, and $590 per CPU on the p5 machines in this identical four-manner power class. An eServer p5 model 550 with two 1.sixty five GHz cores, 4 GB of leading memory, and two seventy three GB disks sells for $20,540, however a similarly configured OpenPower 720 will only must pay $11,625 for a similar iron. In a four-means configuration using 1.65 GHz cores, a p5 550 with eight GB of memory and two 73 GB disks expenses $32,487, while the OpenPower 720 with the equal specs fees $20,675.
There is not any strategy to compare uncooked i5 iron to the OpenPower iron because the entry i5 model 520 specific machines include an operating device, a database, and a set volume of eco-friendly-display processing vigor. but which you could again out of it an additional approach. if you configure an analogous two-method i5 mannequin 550, that you may see what the real premium IBM is charging for the use of i5/OS V5R3 and DB2/400. An i5 model 550 with two 1.65GHz Power5 cores activated, four GB of leading memory, and 146 GB of disk, running OS/four hundred regular edition with no interactive processing capacity however having DB2/400 built-in, charges $126,350. The equal exact iron in the OpenPower 720 line fees $11,625 with out an working device, and $13,625 with the Virtualization Engine partitioning facets. whereas IBM will say that a few of that rate difference has to do with decrease CPU, reminiscence, and disk fees IBM has for the OpenPowers, it truly is nonsense. what's basically happening is that IBM is charging an additional $112,725 to run i5/OS and DB2/four hundred on the same exact server. And if you need to use 5250 green-display processing capability on the identical field, you should installation i5/OS V5R3 on that equal server, which charges an extra $292,000. Assuming that IBM makes no money on the OpenPower field during this assessment and assuming that i5/OS probably simplest charges IBM a few grand to make and assist (say $four hundred per CPU for i5/OS and $2,500 per CPU for DB2/four hundred), that could seem to imply that the gross profits on an i5 mannequin 550 with two processors and full-on eco-friendly-reveal skill are in the range of ninety seven p.c. feel about that for a minute. For each i5 model 550 IBM sells, it will possibly subsidize about four OpenPower 720s and nonetheless flip roughly 20 % gross income on all 5 servers.
Linux fees come nowhere close these bundled i5/OS and DB/four hundred levels, partially because IBM has particular discount deals with crimson Hat and Novell to get industrial Linux on these machines (as well as on the i5 and p5) at lower expenses than is attainable directly from these carriers. that you would be able to get SuSE Linux enterprise Server 9 (which is the degree supported on the Power5 containers) through IBM for $689 for a equipment that has up to two processors, and for $1,299 for any device that spans from 1 to sixteen processors. not like Novell, red Hat doesn’t can charge per equipment (in spite of the variety of partitions), however per Linux example on a server inside partitions, despite the fact that there is just one partition (that means it is in impact an SMP server). through IBM, you can get red Hat business Linux AS three update 3 (which is required on the Power5 machines) for $995 on a two-method laptop or partition and for $1,295 on a partition or computer that spans up to an eight-approach example. McGaughan says that IBM will launch its own digital technical aid carrier together with purple Hat and Novell, doubtless sometime in the fourth quarter, so IBM’s consumers can get the identical one-contact with global services for help for Linux as they get for OS/400 and AIX. (purple Hat and Novell are backing up theses offerings with degree 3 aid, just as they do for identical HP features.)
by the way, there is a few nonsense speak going around that the Power5-Linux boxes shouldn't have any functions. The truth is, IBM has about 600 Linux applications purchasable for vigor-Linux, which compares decently to the 750 applications in the purple Hat-on-X86 portfolio or even the Itanium portfolio, which had about four hundred functions spanning windows, Linux, and Unix via the conclusion of 2003. McGaughan says that any PowerPC or Power4 Linux utility can run on the Power5 machines with the exception of applications primarily compiled to take talents of the VMX vector co-processor in the PowerPC 970 processors used in IBM’s BladeCenter blade servers. Any energy-Linux software that does not use these VMX capabilities will run even on the PowerPC 970.
What the OpenPower announcement makes clear is that i5 and p5 purchasers are being requested to subsidize IBM’s aggressive moves into the Linux area, much as OS/four hundred retail outlets have subsidized IBM’s aggressive moves into the Unix market on the grounds that 1997. The OpenPower announcement is splendid news for IBM’s abilities Linux valued clientele, however is probably not so top notch for the midrange retail outlets who are not getting such favorable pricing for his or her Power5 hardware. however IBM has to do some thing to pump up Linux on energy especially and vigour server volumes commonly, and here's a very good tactic although it is not especially fair (anything on earth that could mean in the enterprise world).
The fact is, in nowadays’s the server company, there are a few alternative ways that server makers can differentiate their items. one way is to create a single server hardware platform that supports as numerous working gadget structures as is technically possible and economically practical. this is the method HP is the use of to champion its Integrity line of Itanium servers (which help home windows, Linux, Unix, and shortly OpenVMS); in a similar way, IBM has used a diverse OS method to prop up sales of its zSeries mainframes (which help a few mainframe operating systems plus Linux and an AIX runtime atmosphere) and its iSeries midrange apparatus (which have run OS/400 and Linux for years and which now assist AIX with the eServer i5 machines launched in may also).
The other strategy to differentiation is the one that IBM has considering the eServer line in a broader experience with the “Squadron” Power5 servers. IBM is creating versions of the Power5 frames that are in accordance with the exact same hardware, however fluctuate from each and every different in operating equipment alternatives, microcode and partitioning features, and pricing. The eServer i5 mannequin 550, the eServer p5 550, and the OpenPower 720 are all in response to the accurate same hardware, however they're sold with very different alternatives on good of that hardware with very distinctive pricing. and also you cannot “upgrade” from one field into yet another. You need to make your platform choice ahead of time, and live with it.
With the HP Integrity approach, you get an economic cost (which is difficult to quantify) in that you should run a number of different working system structures on the same box both on the same time or in a sequence over the course of the technical and financial life of that server. HP costs a stunning hefty premium for this multi-OS capability, which is the hallmark of its Integrity line, in comparison to what it expenses for processing skill on its ProLiant X86 server line. With the IBM eServer strategy, IBM has been promoting the identical standard hardware with costs that depend upon the way you use it. IBM used to discriminate against AS/four hundred and iSeries shoppers who were buying PowerPC or Power4 iron in comparison to the more affordable RS/6000 and pSeries iron in keeping with the exact same hardware. With the Power5 line, IBM has locked the i5 and p5 hardware expenditures, and is differentiating on the utility degree. OS/400 has legacy green-display software support and an built-in database, and IBM fees a very hefty premium for these capabilities, which it will possibly do considering that it has a monopoly on machines that help RPG and COBOL applications that run atop of the DB2/400 database. With the Power5 launch this yr, IBM has shifted all of the premium it used to can charge for AS/four hundred and iSeries servers into the brand new i5/OS working system. Now, AIX has turn into a sort of legacy environment of its own (as has HP’s PA-RISC machines running AIX and sun’s UltraSparc-III and UltraSparc-IV platforms running Solaris), and IBM is compelled to cost a premium for Power5 iron operating even AIX–as a minimum in comparison to that upstart, Linux.
Like Unix was the fee/efficiency driver of the Nineteen Nineties, Linux is shaping as much as be the catalyst for the greatest bang for the buck within the 2000s.
IBM on Tuesday rolled out a raft of latest servers in line with its Power5+ processors, together with a new server with a Power5+ chip working at 2.2GHz and a couple of new machines in accordance with its quad-core module (QCM) know-how that allows for 4 Power5+ 1.5GHz cores to plug right into a single socket.
constructed with the new 2.2GHz Power5+ chip, IBM's new p5 570 midrange Unix server ramps up the pace over its first Power5+-primarily based servers released final October, which topped out at 1.9GHz. IBM says the brand new laptop is geared for enormous database, ERP (commercial enterprise resource planning) and CRM (customer relationship management) functions or server consolidation.
IBM stated previous this month that it plans to ramp up the clock speeds much more in its next-era Power6 processors. at the foreign solid State Circuits conference in San Francisco closing week, the enterprise touted new circuit design strategies that it says will boost speeds to greater than 4GHz devoid of dramatically expanding power requirements, although particulars of the architecture are nonetheless scant at this point.
for high-performance computing, IBM also on Tuesday rolled out a new supercomputer building block with its 2.2GHz Power5+ processor, the IBM gadget p5 575.
also new are several servers with IBM's QCM know-how, including the new midrange p5 560Q with four 1.5GHz Power5+ processors, which IBM says is geared for medium-to-massive, database-intensive and web software implementations. IBM first added its QCM know-how into its servers last yr with the p5 550Q.
IBM Tuesday also released a budget friendly computing device that makes use of its PowerPC 970 processor. The IntelliStation energy 185 express computing device the usage of a single- or dual-core PowerPC 970 processor. IBM last week rolled out its first blade server built with the twin-core PowerPC 970MP processor, the BladeCenter JS21, which it's concentrated on for the bioinformatics, grid computing, retail, manufacturing and petroleum research companies.
As a part of the server rollout, IBM is providing clients who purchase IBM's new QCM-based mostly p5 servers a 50 % price reduction on IBM middleware, akin to WebSphere utility Server and DB2 commercial enterprise Server edition, referred to Karl Freund, vice chairman, IBM pSeries, in Armonk, long island.

THE MAIN INDEX advanced to the 8,000 level on Wednesday as investors went bargain hunting following the short break, alongside foreign investors’ bullish position on the local bourse.
The 30-company Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) jumped 1.17% or 92.90 points to close at 8,008.53 yesterday, continuing its upward trajectory after the holiday break on Tuesday. The broader all-shares index likewise climbed 0.88% or 42.92 points to end at 4,909.88.
“Philippine shares made up for the holiday with more bargain hunting as volumes picked up a week before the Holy Week,” Regina Capital Development Corp. Head of Sales Luis A. Limlingan said in a mobile phone message.
“Meanwhile, investors awaited the start of corporate earnings season later this week and the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) minutes of the meeting tonight,” Mr. Limlingan added.
The PSEi bucked the negative performance of markets abroad amid brewing tensions between the US and European Union, after the former threatened to impose $11.2 billion in tariffs on European products such as cheese, wine, and helicopters. The threats come amid already existing fears of a global economic slowdown.
“The index became an outlier today and closed at 8,008.53 due to the continued foreign buying in the market today,” Unicapital Securities, Inc. Technical Analyst Cristopher Adrian T. San Pedro said in a separate message on Wednesday.
Foreign investors recorded net purchases of P970.64 million compared to the previous session’s P496.59 million.
“On a technical note, the index is still consolidating between 7,800 support to 8,032 resistance,” Mr. San Pedro said, noting that the PSEi could retest the 8,100 and 8,237 mark in the short term should it be able to hold the 8,000 level.
The mining and oil counter was the lone sub-index that dropped, ending 0.47% or 36.25 points lower at 7,679.39.
The rest went up, led by holding firms which rose 1.29% or 100.94 points to 7,873.90. Industrials gained 1.16% or 137.21 points to 11,953.64; property firmed up 1.12% or 46.11 points to 4,139.09; services edged higher by 1.05% or 17.01 points to 1,630.98, while financials added 0.15% or 2.68 points to 1,742.48.
Turnover improved to P9.83 billion after some 2.14 billion issues switched hands, significantly higher than Monday’s P5.40 billion. Advancers outpaced decliners, 110 to 96, while 42 names were unchanged.
Other Southeast Asian markets were subdued as another downgrade to global economic growth by the International Monetary Fund and a US threat to slap tariffs on hundreds of European goods dampened investor sentiment.

Following the confirmation last month by BAE Systems that Qatar had signed an order for 24 Eurofighter Typhoons, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) revealed details of a training package. Meanwhile, Eurofighter reported that final production of the 28 aircraft ordered by Kuwait in 2016 is underway, and that they would be “the most advanced variant of the fighter jet ever made.”
The Qatar contract extends the final production line at BAE’s Warton facility, which was running down, into the 2020s. BAE said that the contract is worth approximately £5 billion ($6.8 billion) and is still “subject to financing conditions,” with the first payment expected in mid-2018. But the MoD gave a value of “around £6 billion” for what it described as “the biggest export deal for the Typhoon project in a decade.”
Deliveries will not begin until late 2022, which may allow time for enough Qataris to be trained to fly and maintain the aircraft, when the country’s air force is also trying to absorb the 36 Dassault Rafales and 36 Boeing F-15QA Strike Eagles that it has also ordered. BAE Systems said it would “establish a new technical training college in Doha, focused on providing students with the critical skills required to support Qatar Armed Forces air platforms in the future.”
The MoD said that a new “joint squadron” will be established at the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon training base, Coningsby. It will take over the No. 12 Squadron "number plate" from a Tornado GR.4 squadron that is disbanding. The squadron will “temporarily integrate Qatari personnel, including pilots and ground crew,” the MoD added. It will operate some of the Tranche 1 Typhoons that the RAF previously planned to phase out, but decided last year to retain.
The Kuwaiti jets are being assembled on Leonardo’s production line in Italy, and will be the first built with the Captor E-scan (AESA) radar. The four original Eurofighter partner nations have paid for development of this radar, and a prototype was first flown nearly 10 years ago. But neither Germany, Italy, Spain, nor the UK has committed to funding its production and retrofit to their Eurofighter fleets.
Leonardo said that the Lockheed Martin Sniper laser designator pod would be integrated on the Kuwaiti Eurofighters, as well as the DRS-Cubic ACMI P5 combat training pod. The jets would be equipped with the MBDA Storm Shadow and Brimstone plus “other air-to-surface weapons,” the company added.
The agreement with the Kuwaiti MoD also includes the design and construction of the infrastructure at Al-Salem airbase; a suite of training devices to establish a pilot operational conversion unit there; and initial support services for three years (with an option for a further five). Deliveries will run from 2020 to 2023.
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, Jul 15, 2013 (Marketwired via COMTEX) -- e2v, a leading global provider of hi-rel semiconductor solutions, has announced the availability of their P2041 and P3041 processors. These are extended-reliability versions of Freescale's quad core QorIQ(TM) processors for power-sensitive and computation intensive applications for demanding environments such as aerospace and defence.
High performance systems require the advanced capabilities offered by multicore integrated processors, whilst at the same time keeping power levels as low as possible. For military and aerospace applications, the Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) characteristics are also key to the success of any new design. To address these requirements, e2v has added two quad-core processors to its portfolio of high-reliability QorIQ(TM) products. The P2041 processor is the entry-level member of this family and features embedded data path acceleration that simplifies and improves design capabilities based on multicore environments. The P3041 is pin-to-pin and software compatible with processors from the QorIQ(TM) P4 and P5 series (specifically the P4080 octal core processor already available from e2v), offering customers a good level of design flexibility.
Both of the new e2v QorIQ(TM) processors combine four Power Architecture(TM) e500mc cores that can run up to 1.5 GHz, enabling high-performance computing with a low-power budget in the 13W range. The P2041 and P3041 processors also feature data path acceleration for optimised multicore network processing, 3 levels of memory cache, DDR3/3L memory controllers with error correction code and a broad set of high-speed communication peripherals. In addition, the trust architecture implemented in the e500mc core and peripherals enables aerospace and defence customers to design systems with the highest possible security level.
Both devices are manufactured using an advanced 45 nanometres SOI process. The P2041 processor is offered in a small footprint 780-balls BGA package while the P3041 processor is available in a 1295-balls BGA package pin-to-pin compatible with processors from the QorIQ(TM) P4 and P5 series.
Eric Marcelot, marketing manager at e2v said "The QorIQ(TM) P2041 and P3041 processors provided by e2v will allow high-level computing which will match the requirements in military and civil avionics. The quad core integrated processors from the QorIQ P2 and P3 families are key components to enhance Swap characteristics of military and aerospace electronics."
Both P2041 and P3041 processors are now available from e2v with extended temperature (-40 degrees C to +110 degrees C) and RoHS compliant packaging. In response to aerospace and defence demands for specific non-RoHS electronics, e2v intends to release leaded versions of P2041 and P3041 processors with full qualification up to military temperature range (-55 degrees C to +125 degrees). The qualification work is currently being performed and should be completed before the end of 2013. In the meantime, samples of the leaded version of P2041 and P3041 are available now, allowing customers to initiate their design work.
Leaded QorIQ(TM) processors from e2v are provided with full manufacturer warranty and included in the e2v semiconductor lifecycle management (SLiM(TM)), programme securing long term availability.
e2v is a leading global provider of specialist technology for high performance systems and equipment; delivering solutions, sub-systems and components for applications within medical & science, aerospace & defence, and commercial & industrial markets.
e2v employs approximately 1600 people, has design and operational facilities across Europe, North America and Asia, and has a global network of sales and technical support offices. e2v has annual sales of GBP200m and is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
